Some Postgame Thoughts

That was alot of fun. NOT!

Tonight's game got ugly in a hurry. Stupid penalties killed any momentum we could have gained in the first half, and by the time the offense got semi-rolling in the second half, we were down 24. Kick coverage once again was abysmal and a liability. Once again we couldn't move the ball through the air, allowing LSU to key on Ben Tate. And we gave up the most passing yards Jordan Jefferson has ever thrown. Gene Chizik was absolutely right when he said "They beat us in about every phase of football game, from the beginning to the end and probably everywhere in between." This team was undermanned, which we all knew going in, and also underprepared, which is the most disappointing part of the outcome.

I figured we'd see more Wildcat this week with Todd's problems last week, but in my opinion it did more to prevent the offense from getting any rhythm than any good it did (which wasn't alot). Todd once again was subpar throwing the ball, only putting up a measly 3.3 yards per attempt. That's not going to cut it in the Sun Belt, much less the SEC. I'm wondering if we should cut bait on Todd and put Caudle in to try and build something positive for next season; it seems we might be best-served to start gearing up for next season anyways.

Eltoro Freeman had a whale of a game; 12 tackles and generally flying all over the field. He looked like an Auburn defender of the past few years rather than the timid, tackle-missing bunch we've seen this year. I thought we did a decent job of stopping the run and getting some pressure on Jefferson, but our secondary had more holes than a slice of Swiss cheese (it's 2 AM, give me a break when my jokes suck).

One last thing that ran through my head while watching the debacle was that we were witnessing all of our fears about Gene Chizik as a head coach come true. All the things we'd heard from bitter Iowa State fans about him have reared their ugly heads this week and last week, and it's not pretty. He looked generally disinterested tonight, which was different from the Chizik I saw in the big wins against Louisiana Tech and West Virginia. He just seemed like he would rather be somewhere else.

One final thought: Despite how poorly we've played in the last two games, if you're thinking of going to Jordan-Hare for the Ole Miss game, PLEASE DO. The last thing us fans need to do is abandon these boys who have poured so much sweat and blood into this program. If you're planning on going, get there early, stay late, and cheer your heart out. No matter how you feel about the state of the program or the play of the team, it's the least you can do.

correct

Chizik looked like “here we go again” right after personal foul penalty on first LSU drive, also Caudle’s throws looked like 105 mph fastballs compared to Todd’s. As the Brits say “sometimes change is like a holiday”. Iowa State beat Nebraska in Lincoln for first time in 32 years as well, don’t know exactly what that means , but it is interesting.

I was dissapointed that Chiz did not ream Etheridge out after the meaningless personal foul that kept the first LSU drive going.

I really do hope we see more of Caudle in the coming weeks. Maybe Todd is healthy, maybe not..doesn’t matter. He is not allowing us to move the ball and Tate, although he is a bright spot on the offense can not do it by himself. Caudle didn’t shut down in the red zone and he looked poised and ready to go. Hell, Trott thanked him for the TD. If Chiz really believes that 2009 is not 2008, then he will not shy away from making the tough choices and at least give Auburn a fighting chance. I have seen some posts about firing the coaches and that is ridiculous. If Chiz and co, had their own recruits and were still playing like they did last night, then maybe the naysayers would have a point. The naysayers are being reactionary idiots.

J.D.—agree that it is so important to keep supporting this team..thanks for bringing up that crucial point!!!

Caudle should start playing a lot more.

He deserves the chance to earn some experience. Chris Todd is not the future of this program and Caudle still has a chance to be the future. He should start playing a lot.

As for the rest of the team and coaching staff, I’m gonna do my best to limit any more judgement until next season. ’09 has just gotten way out of control. We knew Chizik was going to inherit some problems from the Tubbs administration and now we are seeing how substantial those problems were.

Double Agreed.

Caudle or even Rollikson. Todd is done. He is folding like an accordian under pressure and holding the ball too long. Basically, he looks just like he did last year. He sucks. Bench him. PLEASE.

Caudle, huh?

Y’all might have something there. He was able to make something happen, even after LSU put their first string back in to stop a meaningless touchdown. That pissed me off, so classless. But then again, I was hoping one of their first stringers got injured on that last play, so who am I to judge class.

Back to the Caudle thing- I just can’t see him actually beating any team left on the schedule (Furman doesn’t count).

I’d be in favor of letting Caudle give it a try, I just don’t think he’ll get too far, he’s a pick magnet. As for Rollikson, that would be a complete waste of a redshirt and there’s no way he can save a season.

I don't think Caudle would/could

win any games for us. My point is for him to come in and make some rookie mistakes and get some real SEC experience. I don’t think Caudle is gonna run in their like Superman and save our season.

I don't think that Caudle would save our season,

but it is clear that he doesn’t freeze up in the red zone and he is capable of completing passes and even making a touchdown during a football game. If he goes in the game, he will screw up, but he also might be able to help the offense put up some yards—maybe even points. How many more games is Todd going to show us that he can’t?

by Tiger on the mountain on Oct 25, 2009 12:10 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I agree

but still, I don’t want to completely write Todd out. You have to admit that he had nearly everything going against him last night. The entire offense was pretty bad, o-line, receivers. And LSU was playing insane, they had a close loss to the number one team in the country and a bye week to think about it.

by flemico on Oct 25, 2009 12:40 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Umm...

Todd is done my friend. He doesn’t have “it” anymore, whatever “it” is. Maybe, sitting on the bench and watching Caudle for a little while would help just a bit. I’m not sure, but right now, as things stand, Todd is through. By the way, how many quarterbacks do we have on the team right now? I mean isn’t it like 6 or something crazy? Then damnit, try some one else too. Give Mosley a chance, and run the Wildcat more often. I think starting Neil Caudle is a great idea-plus, he’s mobile. We won’t have Todd next year anyway, I think it’s time we start building for next season as this one is done completely. Our guys are capable of doing better, but more than anything, they need a good start with big plays to get their confidence back. Their confidence is gone, despite what they’re saying.
Lastly, if you have line blocking issues, then why would you think that Todd is still okay to have out there? He’s not mobile at all, and he holds onto the ball entirely too long. Furthermore, his arm no longer has the accuracy it had before-that’s the difference whether he is hurt or not. All I’m saying, start working on the future. It’s not going to be pretty, but that’s life you know?

Throwing new QBs to the fire

doesn’t fix anything. Todd may still turn things around, but LSU was not the place to do it. That’s obvious now. The back up always looks better when the starter struggles, but there’s nothing to show that ANY of the other QBs can run this offense.
Wildcat has been good for short yards, it doesn’t get big plays for Auburn.
If the O-line is having problems, you fix the O-LINE, not bench the QB. That’s a no brainer, especially with the talent we have to work with there.

by flemico on Oct 25, 2009 11:53 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah, I heard the announcers saying that Todd had little help last night,

but they were also idiots. Yes, the receivers were blatantly not making the catches that they should have. But there were many times when Todd did not give them a shot to make a catch, by either holding onto the ball too long or throwing it into coverage. If the O-line is not holding, then adjust and get a mobile quarterback. Todd is not comfortable unless his pocket is nice and cozy and he has 11 years to make a throw. I really want Todd to continue to succeed, but honestly, how many more games are we going to have a watch a stagnant offense, that will be irrelevant next season anyway?? If Todd were a sophomore or freshman, I could really understand keeping him in the game and letting him learn. The clinics are done for him; this is his last year. It’s time to move on.

by Tiger on the mountain on Oct 25, 2009 5:10 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Do we have a mobile QB

that can run this offense. The coaches say no, but if you know better, well, I may just have to rethink this whole thing.

And Todd hasn’t just sat in the pocket in those 5 wins, he was rolling out and making plays. LSU was bringing a lot of pressure and playing up to their talent level on an Auburn team on the ropes. Things were not going to end well.

I agree that we need to regroup and work some things out, but sticking a new qb is not going to win games. Those 5 wins were not a mirage we were good, dammit. We beat Tennessee team on the road that nearly beat Bama at home. I say we give Todd more time to put things back together.

I don’t want him greeted with a rain of boos next week when we have to play Ole Miss.

he will be-mark my words.

great attitude

that’s exactly what this team needs, some home crowd booing. That’ll repair their psyche

by flemico on Oct 26, 2009 6:58 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I'm not going to be the one doing it...

However, he will be booed. I can’t help what is going to happen in that. Don’t blame the messenger.

by Sparkey on Oct 27, 2009 8:22 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

sorry

You’re probably right, but still we shouldn’t be complacent with that. Fans booing their own team, that’s the stuff that sends recruits in another direction, I’d assume.

by flemico on Oct 29, 2009 11:39 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

It would be incredibly unclassy to boo Todd.

Agree that he is the starter or not, but ultimately when he is on that field he needs all of our support!!!

Incidentally, I don’t know if we have a ‘mobile quarterback’…I was just starting my Christmas list early. I did like what I saw in Caudle during the waning minutes of the game, that doesn’t mean that I think that he would be suitable as a starter now. It just might make next year smoother, if he was given more opportunities to play now. Dig?

by Tiger on the mountain on Oct 29, 2009 9:11 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I agree...

but again, there’s not much the three of us can do to stop something like that. As far as recruits, listen, what makes a 17 or 18 year old come to any school is not necessarily predictable. Trooper Taylor having a full off season to recruit before signing day will really tell the tale. I’m telling you guys, he’s one of the best recruiters in the country. In addition, you’ve got Gus Malzhan’s offense that will bring in those star skill players. Still, we need a quarterback. Have you guys watched any film of Rollison? If you want mobile, he’s got it and then some. His arm is a rifle, and he has accuracy comparable to that on Todd’s best day. Having stated that, he’s being redshirted as well he should be at this juncture. I’m not saying anything will fix our season now, I’m just saying that I’m struggling to see our guy out there who can’t get the job done. With that said, these guys need us at the game more than ever. Anybody got extra tickets?

by Sparkey on Oct 30, 2009 12:48 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

What's the definition of Insanity?

Doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. I know Caudle came in late in clean up roll, but I’m sure he was thinking here’s my chance to show something and he did, he made quick decisions and got the ball there quick. I think he would give the fans and the team something we don’t have now and that is hope, even if only for a little while. The penalties are the most dissapointing thing, i keep hearing Lane Kiffin’s comment about not wearing orange jerseys agaisnt bama and taking 15 yard penalty to start each half “we are not that good”. We are not good enough to keep making the mistakes we are making. It is almost as if we have gotten a reputation as undisciplined team with the officials, because if there is a questionable call it is going agaisnt us, i mean delay of game on defense? I was losing my mind and Chizik looked like he had taken some Ambien.

THIS IS A BIG QUESTION OF COACHING FOR ME. talk about letting a melt down at home against Kentucky turn into a complete lack of focus against LSU the next week…this team showed really no focus and ability to compete. we looked like a team that belonged in a different conference to me.

going into this LSU game, i was thinking that the AU staff MUST have discussed prior to the game the scenario that Todd would come out flat again…and in my opinion, if that was the case (for the 3rd straight game), then a decision would have to have been made right there. … lets say, (depending on the circumstances of the game) by halfway through the second quarter. the coaching staff should have been prepared for this. CAUDLE SHOULD HAVE BEEN IN THE GAME… i don’t care if it is LSU away, it is about the big picture of regaining some momentum with your offense for the rest of the season.

there are so many things that i personally see wrong with this offense… but the numero uno is confidence at the QB position right now. i also think that mario fannin has been completely underutilized. this is a guy who should be getting at min. 1/4-1/3 of the offensive touches, in my opinion…and it hasn’t happened all season long.

chizik's lack of FIRE...

also wanted to applaud someone else noticing that our coach chizik has really lacked the FIRE these past few games. wonder if there is something going on in the background that we’re unaware of. either way, when AU really needed to get encouraged in the past couple games i just didn’t see it happening. the excitement of the first 5 games seems to have turned to a sort of fatigue for him…

I agree that Fannin has not been used enough, especially now that McCalebb is dinged up. Also Eric Smith is big enough to contribute more, and actually has very good hands.

The knock against Fannin is that he has been fumble-prone. (is that a word?)

by KungFuPanda9 on Oct 26, 2009 5:32 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

ole miss is starting to realize that their primary weapon isn’t snead’s arm, but setting up snead with dexter mccluster. that guy is in the run and pass game… all over the place.

i think so much of finding offensive rhythm is getting confidence spread throughout the O unit from the start of a game…and it has to involve your playmakers. if a defense keys in on one, then it is the staff’s job to focus on creative ways to get someone else involved. you take what the D gives you. fannin has great all-around skills… and he, along with big ben are the veteran playmakers. coaches have got to be aware of getting the right guys the touches…hell we’re running 80 plays a game!

one other point about the decision making as it relates to the use of players on the field. i do not subscribe to the idea that you ever just ride out a season..as a sort of experiment. i don’t care if the staff is brand new or not. the game deserves your best preparation and gameplan every week, through the entire season. the players need the coach for leadership throughout. there is something to be said for consistency, BUT, if the whole of the season is viewed as a game, then i expect the staff to make whatever “halftime” adjustments needed to WIN, or at least become more competitive in the next 5 weeks. it isn’t personal, or about dues paid or what not, it is about winning. in the LSU game, i didn’t see a staff prepared for another poor Todd performance (in my opinion it was another poor performance)…and when Auburn was down, i didn’t see a sense of urgency in the play calling to FIGHT BACK. sat. night was completely embarassing.

Lack of Fire Was noticed when he got off the plane

He looked generally uninterested when he was greated by the media as AU’s new head coach. I was very dissapointed when I heard we had actually offered the job as our new head coach to this guy, but I was gonna be fair and give him a chance, but I am having my doubts now. We did start out to a 5-0 record, but I always seen this in the back of my mind. I’m not calling for his head, but I would have liked to seen someone with a little more enthusiasum take the position. And I have to think is Gene Chizick really the best we could have done? He did not work any great wonders at Iowa State, how can we really imagine he could at Auburn? Who knows maybe given time he can, I have heard he has done some great recruiting, but also read alot of those guys are second guessing that now.

I love Auburn and Auburn football, I’m not gonna lie, I’m still a Tommy Tubberville fan, I do know we have a lot of problems caused by his staff now, but I’m not sure how much of the Tony Franklin, spread offense was shoved down his throught by the powers that be at AU. In a quest to put lots of points on the board, we lost our identity as a power defense, run the ball kinda team that turns out greats like Ronnie Brown, just to mention one.

I want to see us go back to power football. Strong defenses win games!! I hope we get back on track at AU, but I have doubts about anyone with a lack of fire in their gut for Auburn, After all the Auburn Family has the passion flowing through our veins, we need a coach with the same!!!!!

Tubbs

was not all that firey. Just about the opposite as a matter of fact. I don’t think fire or lack thereof is a coaching quality you really need to worry about. Especially since all the former Auburn players you ask about Chizik love him.
