Reasons for UGA loss

Hey guys. Tough loss tonight to the Georgia Bulldogs. It looked like we headed for a blowout after two quick scores by Auburn in the first quarter, but after that, it was all Georgia as Auburn's offense scored a lousy 3 points in the second half and lost 31-24 between the hedges. It's getting really old losing to these guys, as tonight's loss marked the fourth in a row to the Bulldogs. So I'm sure people are asking: What happened? What went wrong? How did AU's offense look so good for 12 minutes in the first quarter, and then look lost in the final 48 minutes of the game?

Two big reasons stuck out to me:

1) The offensive line played its worst game of the season by far against Georgia. Tackles Andrew McCain and Lee Ziemba, suprisingly, were the ones receiving the most abuse from the Georgia front four. McCain and Ziemba got beat off the ball on just about every pass play and Todd was harassed all night. It may not be fair to single out McCain and Ziemba because the entire offensive line got whooped tonight. The line couldn't pass block, it couldn't make holes for Tate to run through (Tate ran more sideline to sideline tonight than he did north and south) and it couldn't stay out of its own way with false starts and holding penalties. The performance of the O-line was shocking for two reasons. First of all, the O-line, in my opinion, has been the most consistent unit all season long. While maybe the QB, the WRs, the TEs and the defense have had their share of breakdowns, the O-line has consistently blocked well for both the running and the passing game, and it was shocking to see them get dominated tonight. The second reason is that Georgia didn't really blitz a whole lot tonight. It's not like Todd was getting sacked because UGA was bringing more than AU could block or that UGA was bringing all kinds of run blitzes that stuffed Ben Tate. The line was simply getting beat by the front four of UGA. But at the same time, if Gus Malzahn sees that his O-line is consistently getting beat, I don't know why he didn't call for backs to stay in and help block the ends. I thought in certain situations, after UGA had consistently been getting pressure on Todd, Malzahn should have called for a running back (or maybe even two) to stay in and help chip the defensive ends. But at the end of the day, the O-line has to execute, and tonight, it was nowhere close.

2) The defense's inability to create turnovers. In all of Auburn victories this season, the Tigers have been able to get interceptions and fumbles at key points in the game. Coincidence? I think not. Josh Bynes apparently likes to play hot potato with the ball as the ball likes to go right throught his hands. It happened tonight and (if you'll remember) Bynes had one go right his hands against Jevan Snead and Ole Miss a few weeks ago. We have to make those plays. There is no way around it. If we are going to win games, especially this year, we can't miss opportunities to take the ball away from the opposing offense. Our defense doesn't have the depth to be able to come up with stop after stop after stop. We are basically playing 11 defenders on that side of the ball, and those guys are having to play EVERY SNAP! Getting tired is inevitable for this defense, and if we can't create fumbles and interceptions, we are going to get scored on - a lot. You may say "Yeah, but it was Georgia. Georgia's offense has been horrible all season AND they didn't have A.J. Greene tonight." It doesn't matter how bad UGA offense is. A bad offense will beat a tired defense any day. If we want any shot (I'm just being realistic) to knock off the Tide in two weeks, we have to create turnovers, and we can miss the opportunites to have turnovers when they are presented to our defense.

Keep your heads up, Auburn fans, and support these players through the thick and the thin! Better days are ahead.

This loss stings.

We should have won this game bottom line. They had advantages in certain matchups over us, but I felt we were the better team. I was really steamed last night towards the end of this ball game. Fannin has a catch bounced right out of his hands by Rambo on the 1. Not only is it 3rd and 11 now, but Rambo was hurt (I wish him all the best, hate to see players hurt that badly) and what that did to the stands was electrifiy them. The UGA defense was PUMPED.

So we come out, Todd promptly gets sacked on 3rd. Then Ziemba false starts and its good bye ball game. And btw, the Ziemba issue has really gotten old. He’s a fine player, but his penalties have more than cost us.

4 years now we have lost to UGA. Its not acceptable. I know Chizik didn’t lose those 4 games, but to me this has to be turned around. A struggling 5-4 Georgia offense looked GOOD last night and all of it WITHOUT AJ Greene.

So we now have losing streaks to: Arky, LSU, UGA, and in two weeks Bammer looks to start a streak against us. At seven wins this year, assuming the BAMA game goes by the wayward, I wouldn’t be upset if Chizik declined a bowl bid. I, as a fan, want Championships. SEC trophies and BCS trophies. The Roto Rooter Bowl Preseneted by Fig Newton is not a championship. (done venting)

Kudos, however, to Chizik and his staff to turning this team around and making us competitive again. Last year was worse case scenario and I think they have handled it very well considering. I know the players are playing hard and trying their best and as a fan, that is all I can ask for.

Yeah, this loss hurts.

Particularly after the stellar play of the first quarter. But it is not like Georgia team that we played last night was a talentless bunch of players. Their season has been a huge surprise given the amount of talent on that team. These Auburn Tigers never gave up, even at the end.

I disagree with WarEagle86 about turning down a Bowl Bid. If this team makes a bowl, even the Papa Johns pizza-less bowl, than they deserve to go. I don’t care these players have really pulled themselves together this season. Hell, they had us convinced that they could win against a team like Georgia. I am not entirely convinced that they can’t beat Bama. It’s not over yet.

I really enjoyed watching

our RB’s go straight up the middle into a pile and get 0-1 yards, and then repeat that 17 times. I hate watching our “guru” not make adjustments. In the games we have won this year we have adjusted, and in our loses we hang our hat on a play and hope it eventually works. Hopefully we will at least score in the Iron Bowl this year.

itll be another shut out noway can the plays we call beat bama why is adams the only one they throw to,hes good yes but when a team shuts him down we still try to get it to him. bento has lost this year but we aint tried to use him. bama has no pass defence we can burn them but todd is going to have to throw it,if he dont they will have 10 sacks maybe if malzahn will throw it deep 4 time in a row the dbs will get tired faster and if we would hike the ball like we supposed to they would be tired the fact that we line up and let the play clock run down does not help cause they are still resting .so im sure we will have to put with cheater university again talk about how good they are im sick of auburns ways thats why we havent got a title in 40 years

Dude

Do you know where the period key is?

by James4au on Nov 18, 2009 5:33 AM CST up reply actions

unacceptable

I think is an over used word. I wish that Auburn losing to Georgia last night was unacceptable, but life does go on and in order to go on with it, I will accept begrudgingly that we could have won that game, but did not. Whatever the outcome is, I want our players to hold their heads up and be determined that they do their best. If that was our team’s best last night, they will improve with the right attitude.

This was a rebuilding year and so far I’m satisfied. Who thought we would win 5 straight out of the gate? Not me. The team hasn’t been consistent but really what did we expect and were those expectations realistic? What is realistic is to expect more improvement and the coaches I’m sure have the same expectation. It wasn’t fun watching us let another game squeak past us, I know. But to think where we were last year makes me have hope that we will be better next year.

And as for the post above me, I don’t know what game you were watching. I really didn’t see it that way at all. I did think Ben Tate was going to get loose on one of those runs and was shocked when it never happened, but the offense did mix it up and spread the ball around to a lot of players. Tate is usually the guy who teams have to make special effort to stop and who can disrupt a defensive strategy, but obviously Georgia didn’t get phased by that.

And if we are eligible for a bowl game, are we not allowed extra practice time? Not that Auburn will be turning down any Bowl bids when there is sure to be a check waiting for us, but we could really use as much practice time as we can get.

I don’t want to bash our O linemen. But as good as they are, some of them will be remembered most for how many false starts they had and the games that went down in part because of those penalties. When they get to the NFL, if they keep doing that they will not last long.

This summer I was predicting 8-4 for the season. We lost to Kentucky, and I had counted on that as a win. We have another game to go. The big one. And I truly believe it is impossible to count us out in the Iron Bowl.

That we are 7-4 right now is modest success based on the roster. Also, during the game we lost one of our linebackers, and McCalebb was not 100%. Did you see him hobble after that sideline run when he had to cut to stay in bounds?

Yeah, Tate couldn’t find a hole. Yeah, we committed penalties at the most “unacceptable” times. But was that kick off return fun, or what? Our special teams stats took a jump there.

We are playing a heck of a lot of first year guys who are doing pretty darn good considering the experienced units they’ve been up against. This bodes well for the future.

what are the odds on ziemba getting another false start

I seriously think there is something wrong when he makes the same mistake over and over and over and over and over again!

Am i the only one seeing this…. i understand making the mistakes but he is one of our most experienced players. He shouldnt make the same mistakes

We'd ...

Be 2-9 right now had we let Tuberville stay……These coaches have this team playing hard. Yes, they aren’t very good, but they’re fiesty and they DESERVE a bowl-they have earned it. It’s extra practice for F*ck-sakes!

You spoiled, rotten, whiny babies need to get over yourselves, and decide if you really do bleed Orange and Blue! These kids do! And, THAT is good enough for me!

No more knocking this team….

I have no idea what game you watched last night, but it wasn't a blow out.

We knew it would be a close game. It was; it just did not go our way. Those Tigers played hard and I am proud of them. I am proud of our coaches. Todd needs better pass protection against Bama, but thank goodness we have a couple of weeks to rest and prepare.

I agree with Arie and GITiger (see below), quit whining and get behind your Tigers. If you don’t have the stones, then there is a dirt road that leads to another state school. I am damn proud of these Tigers, and I am tired of so called "fans’ bashing them (including coaches). Get over it and get over yourself and your ridiculous and unrealistic need for absolute perfection.

How did you understand what he meant?

With no punctuation anywhere in sight, I couldn’t figure out half of what tiger was trying to say.

I would be an Alabama fan too but I didn't go to Troy. Instead, I am an Auburn man because I went to Auburn.

tigersince84 for head coach...not

I agree with ArieGold, stop the bashing and lets stay behind our team true and true. Auburn came out and looked fantastic, but UGA got the momentum going and it turned into a shootout. The turnovers and penalties ultimately killed it for us and we lost and that is the way the game goes. I also think we could still beat Bama because all bets are off on the Iron Bowl. The coaches are doing an outstanding job of coaching our boys. C’mon, it’s the 11th week. All of the teams have our game films now, so it is no surprise. The difference is how our players execute this late in the season.

I feel strongly we should accept a bowl game wherever that is since we get the extra practice time so we can work the next year starters and let the players be rewarded and enjoy themselves.

Let’s stay positive in these final two weeks and talk up the Tigers. And “Tigersince84” take some evening english class and touch up on your skills before you blog anymore. Kind of embarrassing.

well since i am not writing an artical for espn, i didnt think i had to be absolut perfect in my writing.so with that said, ill write without all the commas and periods and you will still be able to read it. we have not had a national title since 57 it is a reason cause we come up with excuses furman scored 31 points on us furman has any team scored 31 on florida bama ohio st ok with that being said and i hope you can make out what im saying we should not suck like we do it is no excuse our line has experince we have rbs with experince some of our defence does also 31 points to furman we have 6 high school teams that can beat furman and not give up 31 points high school people i love auburn always have and always will i like chizik not sure about malzahn roof will never make it i want a title before i die do you realize 3 sec schools have titles in the last 10 years and weve had some real good seasons during this time we have none bama and florida and lsu they dont use crazy motions and fakes and stupid calls they just play we need to play not pray i think its something like do what we do well this is not what we do its time to play football bammers are getting on my nerves if they can give fishing trips and laptops then we should to offer the #1 high school qb a car to get him here a make like we punishing him and suspend him for the first season (redshirt him) and maybe win some games

you should slow down and make some more effort if you want anyone to understand what you wrote. Believe me, I can look past a lot when it comes to reading internet posts but whatever point you were trying to make is lost somewhere in there. The only thing I really liked was “we should not suck like we do”

The biggest difference....

In this loss to the Dawgs and last seasons is simple. Last year in spite of the coaching staff the players made the game close. This year with the few defensive players still on active duty, the coaches helped the players keep it close.
We were never going to be 9-1 or 10-1 at this point in the season, NEVER!!!! We are fortunate that this team stayed together after the LSU loss, and came out fighting against the Rebs.
I’ll remember this squad for a long time. They have achieved quite a lot, in spite of the adversity.

I agree KoolBell...

I was very angry last night especially with the Ziemba false start #1001, but really we are fortunate that this team has stayed together and that we have even some life left in us with our depth issues and a new coaching staff. I am not upset with this team at all. I think we have accomplished much, all things considered.
My concern is getting some more depth and talent for next year and keeping our coaching staff intact enough to build the program back. We just do not have the talent we need to compete at the top tier of the SEC right now…I am so tired of watching Thorpe get beat, the loss of Ethridge really hurt us last night…but we all knew this was coming…there is not much left to work with. We should be proud of what we have accomplished and anticipate what is to come. Good things are going to happen to Auburn given some time and patience.

Thorp getting beat wasnt all his fault

I think he played a rediculous amount of downs, 64 or something like that. Im sure a bunch of other players were equally exhausted. Im glad that most of the team is returning next year.

I realize the defensive end tandem are looking to Georgia now...

But, I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. Wins and losses don’t go that far with new recruits. When Chizik has more time to get on the trail and not have to worry about his team falling apart, we should get some more commitments coming our way on the defensive side of the ball. I love our team’s heart and resolve. You can’t take anything away from their effort other than tip your hat. Honestly, it looked like they flat out had nothing left. By the way, I would like for the Auburn family to not mention anything about the concussion for Rambo besides wishing him a quick and full recovery. He was not faking it and I really hate to see any Auburn person make a slight reference that way. We have much better class than that. Next year might well indeed be worse than this year folks, get ready for a possible rough time.

by Sparkey on Nov 16, 2009 9:29 AM CST reply actions

Well, the only thing about next year is that we will have new quarterback. Some people are glad about that. But just remember, the odds of a new QB in SEC being successful are not great.

Now, of course, there will be a chorus of posts pointing out how this guy or that guy is a freshman QB and is doing well. Exceptions do not make the rule. So, just speaking generally, there will be a number of game-experienced players on our roster next year. But quarterback won’t be one of them.

I’m sure all this summer the blogosphere will be filled with speculation about Caudle, Rollison, Moseley, et al.

by KungFuPanda9 on Nov 16, 2009 10:18 AM CST up reply actions

My point exactly.

Furthermore, Todd is our best quarterback right now, and I think all of us can agree that’s not great. If the guy after him is worse, then our QB situation will only be worse next year not better. In addition, we also Tate, which will hurt though we do have fine guys after him and more coming in next year. Our WR’s should be even better next year, but that makes no difference if we can’t get the ball to them. While we are picking up players on the defensive side of the ball, they will have to learn first, and Coleman won’t be easily forgotten. Furthermore, our secondary hasn’t gotten too much help in that area as far as recruiting goes, though we have picked up some athletes that might indeed fill that void. Anthony Gulley wouldn’t be bad there either. All that’s to say, it’s not too surprising if next year has less wins.
