How to Win The Iron Bowl.

2007_iron_bowl_medium
Bama's last visit to the Plains didn't go so well!

War Eagle, everybody! Like the Auburn football team, I've taken a few days off from college football. For the team, it was all about the fatigue. Auburn has played 11 straight weeks in a row. Only Vanderbilt has it worse. The Commodores will have played 12 in a row, when this season ends. They'll be rewarded by a 2-10 season, most likely. For me, the time off has helped me purge the taint of a bad weekend all around. Auburn's loss was painful, but I salute the effort of a fatigued, undermanned squad. I can't say the same for my Dallas Cowboys. When the first frost hits, the Cowboys' collection of superstars and veteran free agents pack it in. Who would you rather have pulling the strings: Bobby Lowder, or Jerry Jones? Things could be worse, Tiger fans!

After some well deserved rest, it's time to gear up for a visit by the Alabama Crimson Tide. Many Auburn folks I've talked to this week are already conceding a Tide win. I say that it doesn't have to be that way! Auburn can play with anyone, when they are executing well. The Tigers can beat Bama, if they run the ball, stop the run, and don't turn the ball over. The Iron Bowl last year was a tight game, till Auburn handed Alabama the ball 3 straight possessions in the 3rd quarter. We can't do that, this year at home!

Keys to Auburn victory, after the jump!

Star-divide

Auburn needs to effectively rotate defensive linemen. There was a Zach Clayton sighting in the Georgia game, and here's hoping he's healthy for the Iron Bowl. We need to rotate both the tackles and ends, and keep them fresh for Bama's 4th quarter push. If we have Antonio Coleman and Antoine Carter playing every snap of the first three quarters, we won't be able to stop Bama in the 4th with the game on the line.

At linebacker, Auburn SORELY needs Eltoro Freeman back. It's no coincidence that Georgia outscored Auburn 31-10 after Freeman left due to injury. With Freeman, Auburn stopped the run. Without him, Georgia moved the chains. Craig Stevens, and Josh Bynes need to have career games. Auburn's linebackers must attack, and shut down Bama's running game.

Rotation in the secondary will be important, too. Safeties WILL have to come up and make tackles, in this one. Bama gets a lot of successful blocks out of their receivers, tight ends, and fullbacks. While I applaud the efforts of young Darren Bates and Demond Washington, we need meaningful snaps out of Mike Slade and T'Sharvan Bell, too. Neiko Thorpe MUST keep his man in front, this game. Alabama WILL try a few play-action bombs at Thorpe, and he's GOT to be ready! If Bama tight end Colin Peek returns for this game, I wouldn't be surprised to see Alabama throw some passes in the flat to him. Auburn safeties will have their hands full trying to cover Peek. Walter McFadden must continue his excellent play. Last season in the Iron Bowl, McFadden limited Julio Jones to 3 catches for 36 yards. If Jones is held to 36 or fewer yards this year, Auburn has a great chance.

Clinton Durst needs to have a great game in this one. His numbers may not be helped, but he should avoid punting the football where Javier Arenas can get it. Arenas is averaging over 13 yards per return. A 35-yard kick out of bounds is an improvement over letting Arenas possibly break the game open. Likewise, this might be the one game where I'll approve of the squib kickoff strategy. On returns, we've got to find some way to keep Demond Washington fresh for these. Did you know that Bama is dead last in the SEC, in kickoff coverage? Bama averages 38.6 net yards per kickoff, which is even worse than Auburn's 39.7.

Auburn's offensive line will have a tough task in this Iron Bowl. Bama has three HUGE defensive linemen, and big backups as well. All three linemen nearly DEMAND a double team block, then Bama usually sends an outside linebacker (Eryk Anders, Cory Reamer) as a rush-end. You don't know till the snap which side that end is coming from. The double team on Terrence Cody is probably inevitable, with the other guard pulling, for Auburn. I'd expect Alabama to attack Andrew McCain, who's been very vulnerable to the speed rush this season. On passing downs, McCain MUST get that first step back with the correct foot, and get his shoulders turned. On run downs, he's got to get his head across. Auburn must get the front four blocked, to get the running game going. Bama is number one in the league in run defense, giving up only 2.4 yards per carry. Please! No false starts or illegal shifts! Lastly, if we've got 3rd and 1 or 4th and 1, we've GOT to STOP trying to pull linemen!

Guess which Bama player leads the team in tackles for loss? Would you believe that it's Javier Arenas? Nick Saban LOVES him some corner blitz! Arenas is tied for 3rd in the SEC, with 10.5 tackles for loss. How do they DO that? Well, safety Mark Barron slides over when Arenas blitzes. Barron has 7 pass breakups and 4 picks, which ties him for the lead in the SEC in passes defended. Justin Woodall, the other safety isn't bad either. Auburn needs some sort of "automatic" check when Arenas slides down the line just before the snap, both the receivers AND Todd. Bama always tips it, a second or two before the snap, AFTER you've meercatted to the sideline and changed the play. Auburn needs a two man route and quick throw underneath, to defeat that Arenas corner blitz. No one blends coverages like Alabama. Auburn's going to HAVE to be patient, and rely on crisp throws under the coverage. The Tide defends from the inside-out. To attack that, you've got to throw successfully to the outside. Auburn's greatest offensive failure in last year's Iron Bowl was only TRYING two passes to the sideline. Bama will bait quarterbacks into trying deep balls. Chris Todd must choose his times carefully.

For Auburn backs, it's really simple, this game. Eric Smith and Mario Fannin have to block like they've never blocked before, and Ben Tate and Onterrio McCalebb have to run like there's no tomorrow. Extra hard fought yards move the chains, and are the difference against really good defenses like Alabama. There won't be big holes and lanes. The backs are going to have to create. Above all else, Auburn must hold onto the ball no matter what! A deep interception is kind of like a punt. But even a single fumble in Auburn's own end of the field could lose the game.

Chris Todd, this is it. This is your big chance! Todd has had an amazing story this season, coming back from the brink to lead this team. It's been an up and down year, but now Todd can cement his legacy. If Auburn beats the Tide, Todd will go down as a legend. Todd needs crisp, accurate throws, and must avoid throwing into coverage. We'll certainly need that 5th year senior maturity and leadership, in this tough ball game.

In other strategy notes, I'm not sure we need to run the Wildcat at all. Alabama has a series of defensive packages for it, including a two deep zone that still manages to overload the sweep side of the formation. A counter might work against that, but a Kodi Burns lob ball against that zone could be disaster. One thing I'd like to see occasionally is a flipped offensive line, and a Todd half roll to the right. With Ziemba out front, and McCain somewhat protected by the motion, Todd can do some damage throwing to the right, especially on the wide side of the field. I'm not sure about the hurry-up offense, in this one. I think it backfired, last week. We got tired on the line faster than Georgia got tired on defense, it looked like. Bama's not really a team you can wear down, defensively. We need to run some reverses to Fannin, Zachary, and McCalebb. Bama will not likely be vulnerable like some teams, but we need those plays to keep the Tide defense honest. Defensively, we've got to use more run blitzes. We're not going to be able to sit back in cover-two all day with Josh Bynes dropping in the middle. Bama will run it till we stop 'em.

It's soon to be Iron Bowl week, folks! I'm fired up already! I'm looking forward to a great week of analysis and fever pitch!

I agree, great article and here's my 2 cents worth

I haven’t thought about moving away form the hurry up offense but it does sound like an interesting possibility for this game.

I really think that the offensive coaching staff needs to seriously consider playing 4 down football in situations where it’s 4th down and a few yards and especially on BAMA’s end of the field. This extra down could be just enough to keep the chains moving and the BAMA offense off the field. It’s a risk that may be worth taking.

And for the Love of God on 3rd or 4th down and short, don’t line up in the shotgun formation. It makes absolutely no sense to take a snap 5 yards deep when you only need to gain a yard or two at the most. I would seriously consider putting Tate, Fannin, or Smith under center for some of these plays.

I’d love to hear any additional thoughts.

War Eagle!

Take on the game from a Bama fan.

I think this game will be decided by Auburn’s offense versus Bama’s defense. I see Auburn’s defensive depth as its biggest liability entering this game, and I don’t think there’s much debate on that. If Auburn’s offense can keep its defense resting on the sidelines, then this will be a close game. To me, that’s as good a reason as any to shy away from the hurry-up.

i totally agree with the 4 down territories and the totally agree with acid and 83tiger

i totally agree with the 4 down territories and the 3rd and 4th down and shorts. Line up under center and let Ben get you the yard or two. and to combat the excuse I have heard on that that we dont practice under center, well you have two weeks. Its not that hard to go under center when you need to. As far as the going for it on 4th down inside Bama territory, I agree. 3 points and/or pinning them deep with pooch punts wont be enough. We need to capitalize on short down situations and keep the ball. I am looking forward to these two weeks leading up to it. War Eagle and Beat Bama. Go Mocs.

How is Vandy off

True

they aren't supposed to

But I’m sure the SEC office is going to let them slide. Wouldn’t you? Florida technically had an off-week before the SECCG; but they scheduled FSU. Every other team is scheduled against an SEC opponent. For rivalry week, isn’t FSU v. UF much better than Vandy v. Florida?

FSU/UF

has been Thanksgiving week since 2005. The new rule took place in 2007. So technically Florida did not have an off-week to schedule the FSU game.

In that case...

USCw only has 7, and Notre Dame only has 8 (I’m assuming you’re discrediting those retroactive titles, despite the fact nobody had a better record than ’Bama/Notre Dame did in each of those seasons). And you guys only have 5 SEC titles, not 6 (1988 is bogus).

But hey, since ’Bama claims illegitimate titles, we may as well claim the ’36, ’45, and ’66 titles considering we finished with undefeated records that were better than the “champions” in each of those years.

The most important number is 40. You’ll know what that is after next Saturday, or are we not going to count the Iron Bowl victories prior to the year 1940 because they’re all “retroactive”?

After spending seven wondrous years in the state of Alabama, never in my life have I seen fans, who claim to be loyal to one team, spend more time AUbsessing over the other more so than they do their very own.

No one

had any Iron Bowl wins from 1908-1947, but I’m glad you brought that up. Talking about excluding victories, why does the all-time series record published in Yea Alabama 2008 by the RBR staff only START the series in 1905 AFTER you guys won again. What about our 7-2 record against you in the 1890s and early 1900s? Not going to count that? Nice revisionist history.

Why don’t you send your mouthpiece Pete over here and I’m sure we can straighten this inequity out.

Holy crap

Do we have this on video? Anyone?

Is this the elusive Auburn fan living in the past — has it finally happened? Have we gone to the “yeah, but look at our record from the 1800s” argument?

You compliment us greatly with your comments.

by HarveyBirdmanAAL on Nov 19, 2009 2:31 PM CST up reply actions

The difference

is that the games did actually happen. The existence of any sort of national championship back in the 1920s did not. You can find in any newspaper that Alabama won games in 1925 and 1926. You won’t find any mention of a national championship because it hadn’t been created yet.

Living in the past is usually what Alabama is accused of by embellishing their MNC claims, which are dubious. Those football victories were not. The Tide does have more legit titles than we do, which makes it very curious why you don’t enjoy a better winning margin against us than a palty 54%.

Banned in Boston. Banned in Bama.

by War Eagle Atlanta on Nov 19, 2009 2:54 PM CST up reply actions

I see what you did there

but talking about games played in 1893 (one of which was played in February), and were probably exhibition games for all we know, is living in the past.

Alabama fans generally were accused of living in the past because Bear completely owned Auburn’s ass while he was around from 1959-1981, we outscored you 594 to 262, including seven shut-outs, and five more times where you failed to score more than ten points.

See, I didn’t mention ANY national championship claims, but if I make that statement, then I’m “living in the past”. So are you with that weak-ass “but we won in 1893” argument.

by HarveyBirdmanAAL on Nov 19, 2009 3:00 PM CST up reply actions

Those games

are in the books. How can you deny them? Some schools dispute games played during World Wars because most of their student bodies were away.Your school denies them because it’s not consistent with your revisionist ideas.

Oh, these were exhibtion games, huh? Wait a minute. The Agricultural and Mechanical College of Alabama not only plays it’s first football game before THE University of Alabama does, but beats them in their first game, too, and it was just an exhibition? Pretty weak. I don’t know that much about CFB history, but I do know more than you. I’m pretty confident, however, that it was a pretty embarrasing start to Tuscaloosa football to lose the first 7 of 9 to A&M of Alabama.

But you’re right. Bear did own us, 19-6 in his tenure. But we were 13-10 before him and 15-11 so far since.

Geez

Crap posts like these from WEA are the reason you can’t have legit discussions on this site. All I said about the 1893 game was that it might have been an exhibition game because it was played in February. I tried to actually talk about THIS YEARS game in my first post. I would like to continue that discussion if that’s cool.

by HarveyBirdmanAAL on Nov 19, 2009 7:58 PM CST via mobile up reply actions

Games

were played whenever they could back then. The idea of a season was still materializing, so it had a haphazard fashion at first. Our game in Feb 1892 against Georgia was actually credited towards the 1891 season. Go figure, but it was still a game, and it served as the inaugural football game in the deep south (deeper than Virginia).

You guys didn’t play more than 4 games in a season until 1902 when you played 8. You didn’t play any games in 1898, but I’m willing to bet that the university claims their football pedigree goes back to 1892. I bet it’s carved in stone somewhere at BDS. How would you reconcile that?

Teams started playing when they started calling themselves Auburn or Tuscaloosa. No rational person can disagree with that. Teams were known by their town name back then. What do games played back then mean? Not a whole lot today, but like REM sang, let’s begin the begin.

Brilliant, bumpkin.

And in the same paragraph, this NCAA site lists who the particular MNC selector was who bestowed a title upon these teams. NOT THE NCAA THEMSELVES. They are merely parroting these results that have been out there. Plus, since the 1930s, there are around 30 selectors EACH YEAR who award titles. That does not mean that ALL of them are credible. Bammers make fun of Auburn’s 2004 NCs awarded by inferior selectors. We don’t count them officially, but we know the Tide would—30 years later when no one is watching.

Look, you’re a newbie so I’ll cut you some slack. Do your homework first and report back to me later.

Listen rocket scientist

With that said, let’s drop the name calling, it actually shows a lack of intelligence, not otherwise. I have heard the argument about MNC’s as many times as you have heard a BAMA fan throw 12 at you. I do not need to do “research” when the person seeking to “educate” me wrote the article. Until we have a playoff, the polls and selectors are the only benchmark. So I guess nobody has ever won a NC, so 1957 does not count for Auburn either. FWIW, I am not someone who throws out the “we have 12” statement, I will defend them when attacked though. Let us agree to disagree and look forward to a good game. I came here to try and have some intelligent discussion about the upcoming game, not get in an argument about the past.

I will try and drop by here in the upcoming days, maybe we can actually talk about the game some.

That's why

the ‘M’ in ‘MNC’ stands for ‘mythical’, because they weren’t won on the field—not against all contenders, that is.

So is it your opinion that if any of the 30-something selectors chooses a school to be their champ, that the team can claim that in the record books? And if so, should they do it immediately, or wait a while?

A lot of the Auburn flags mysteriously disappeared over the the last two seasons. There are plenty of bandwagon fans for both sides. I have never flown the flags but I am a lifelong BAMA fan and have had season tix for the last 7 years. The only reason I was able to get season tix was because of coaches like Dubose and Shula. Now there is a 10k waiting list for season tix. We even gained a new BAMA fan at my work this year. He was an Auburn fan for the past 10 years(how long I have worked with him). I have not accepted him as a BAMA fan yet, maybe after about 10 years pulling for the Crimson.

Also, I only joined SBNation a few weeks ago but I have been a BAMA season ticket holder for the past 7 years. I also have been posting with Auburn fans on another site for the last 12 years. Other than some gentle ribbing, we have never gotten irate with each other.

Much like a GDI when it comes to frats...

…I will take that and be proud of it. I have given quite a bit of money to UA. I would have went to UA instead of JSU, if they had given me a full scholarship like JSU did. Some of us were not born with silver spoons in our mouths. Sorry to disappoint anybody but I did not want to put any financial burden upon my parents. I am much different from my co-worker in that I have been a lifelong BAMA fan. I already have my tix for Pasadena reserved, hope I get to purchase them, we will see.

Excellent analysis, Acid.

Too bad that it is being covered up by MNC’s and ‘sidewalk’ fan talk. But the above standards, I would be considered a sidewalker too…good thing that I know better :)

I am most interested in the Tate v. Ingram battle.

I am expecting for Tate to come out en fuego!!! I don’t think he was pleased with his performance between the hedges. He will be ready to really bring it next Friday!

I think

that battle comes down more to O line than either one of those guys. They’re bioth strong RB’s who are hard to bring down. I think Ingram has more speed and better instincts, but Tate’s giot him beat in power. The thing is that Ingram doesn’t need tobe powerful be/c his o line actually makes holes for him to run through.

Solid point about the O-line. Tate is super powerful.

I am hoping the O-line gets some lanes open for him…

Looking forward to WEA’s ‘Best Back’ post.

For once, I actually find myself agreeing with an Auburn fan...

…hell has just frozen over. I did not come over here to discuss the past or my qualifications to be an Alabama fan. It just seems that all that was being posted about.

FWIW, I think Tate is a very good back, I especially enjoyed him sending Eric Berry flying earlier this season. Do I think he is as good as Ingram, no but that is opinion. The only way we could ever find out is by putting them on the same offense.

I think Auburn stands a slim puncher’s chance next Friday. Auburn just doesn’t have the horses up front yet. They are also where we were about 3 or 4 years ago, no depth. While I enjoyed the hell outta singing Rammer Jammer in Bryant-Denny last year and the score, I look forward to this being a real game again between two powerhouse teams. That is something that has been really missing for the last decade. One team or the other was suffering from depth issues. Don’t get me wrong, I still want to beat Auburn every season but it is much more satisfying to beat a very good team.

I don't think

Auburn can generate enough offense to win this game. Auburn should’ve blown UGA out with that horrible defense UGA has. I don’t believe that Auburn’s defense will be able to contain Ingram, especially come the 2nd half, where the Tide to settle down and pound the ball with Ingram and Richardson. Neither back needs a big hole to get through and make a big run and neither back is easy to bring down one on one.

And who cares about the past. I heard Auburn fans for 6 staight years heckel Bama fans. I here Bama fans say we got 12 NCs and the counter-argument from Auburn fans is always the same. WHO GIVES A DAMN!!! What does matter? THIS YEAR!!! And I’m sorry to say that Auburn just isn’t good enough to compete with Bama this year. And the hope that Bama will be looking foward to the Dec. 5th game against the Gators is exactly that, HOPE!! Bama’s players are focused on this game, THIS WEEK! Not the game in Atlanta in 2 weeks. Would I like to see a good game? Yes! Do I think it will be? Probably not (unless you’re a Bama fan).
