Saturday's Win Is Another Step In The Right Direction

Former Auburn coach Pat Dye likes to say that one of his favorite teams was his first one, the 1981 Auburn Tigers. Unless you are old enough to remember them, chances are you know little about this team that appears as nothing more than a slight mention in the Auburn Media Guide.

They only managed a 5-6 record, but they were gritty and always came to fight. There wasn't a lot of talent, but there was a lot of heart. Dye likes to say that team laid the foundation for the future of Auburn football. Fast forward 28 years and we're seeing similar qualities in the 2009 edition of Auburn football.

Saturday's win was not a work of art. But considering the rainy and overcast conditions combined with the expectations of another lopsided SEC loss, Saturday looked and felt like a masterpiece. You can't help but feel this team is laying its own foundation for another great Auburn run.

What can we make of this Auburn team? Does it even matter? Football is fun again in East Alabama. Confidence has been restored after another October to forget. Quarterback Chris Todd has found his arm again and defensive end Antonio Coleman looks more like Quentin Groves every day. Ben Tate is letting Alabama's Mark Ingram grab the spotlight while he grabs the yards. How long will it last? Who knows?

Don't try to rationalize it. Don't look for explanations.  Just enjoy it for now. Gene Chizik's bunch may score 70 points against the Paladins of Furman next Saturday. Or they may struggle deep into the third quarter. They may go to Athens in two weeks and treat Georgia like they are back in Jacksonville wearing those ugly Halloween uniforms. Or they may not show up at all.

Take this season for what it is. Chizik is laying the foundation. There will be good days and bad. Let's choose to look at the cup as half full. Auburn is going bowling again. The season will not end on the Friday after Thanksgiving. More important than the bowl bid is the additional month of practice time they'll get in December.  It's all about laying the foundation. Looking at it in that light, you can't put a measure on how big Auburn's victory was Saturday over Ole Miss.

The neck injury suffered by Auburn defensive back Zac Etheridge against Ole Miss Saturday afternoon was one of the scariest I've ever witnessed. As you've undoubtedly heard by now, he's out for the rest of the season. The good news is that Etheridge is expected to make a full recovery.

If there was anything good that came out of the play, it was the sportsmanship displayed by Ole Miss player Rodney Scott. If you watched the game, you'll remember Scott lying under Etheridge following the play, somehow sensing that Etheridge was seriously hurt. Scott did not move a muscle the entire time medical personnel attended to the injured defensive back.

I've seen a lot of good and bad sportsmanship in my day; but this act was by far the best I've ever seen.  We can all learn a lesson from Scott. Here's Auburn coach Gene Chizik commenting on the action...

"It was one of the most amazing things I've seen," Chizik said. "... I have to give that young man a lot of credit. I don't know how he knew, but he knew he couldn't move. He sat as still as the night, lying right underneath him. It was one of the most phenomenal things I've witnessed in doing this."

"I didn't want to dress like this for Halloween."

I know Thanksgiving is still a month away and it's a little early to start talking about what we're thankful for, but thank goodness Auburn resisted the temptation to alter their uniforms for Halloween. The "special edition" Georgia and Tennessee uniforms were a disaster.

Rumors were circulating all week on Auburn message boards that school officials were considering allowing the team to wear blue pants against Ole Miss. Can you imagine? Actually I can.  I saw the results in Jacksonville and Knoxville. I give the edge to Georgia for pure ugliness.  The black helmets with red face masks may go down as the worst look in the history of the SEC.  I'm sure even Oregon was jealous.

Outside of Saturday's huge SEC Western Division matchup between Alabama and LSU, the remaining conference games this week are duds. South Carolina plays at Arkansas; Eastern Kentucky visits Kentucky; Tennessee Tech travels to Georgia; Memphis takes on Tennessee; Northern Arizona visits Ole Miss; and Vanderbilt plays at Florida.

Maybe someone can explain to me why Auburn officials chose to kickoff this weekend's homecoming game with Furman at 12:30 p.m. CT. With the game available only on pay-per-view, you would figure school officials could start the game at any time.  For fans driving from Birmingham, Huntsville and Mobile, it means another early wake up call. Late afternoon seems like a better fit for fans and local businesses.

Thanks Jay.....

Its articles like this that first drew me to following you and Phllip Marshall’s coverage of Auburn athletics. I have been following Auburn football for over 50 years and since " I believe in Auburn and love It " , I see you as a true defender of the faith !

Start Time

I would not doubt it if the 12:30 start time is to get used to playing at that time since the Alabama game is at that time, and we have had a lot of night games.

season

I agree with the article by the way. It has definitely been a fun season.

There's no way..

that any other teams unis could be half as hideous as what The Vols decided to take the field in. Georgia really didn’t look that bad, in their unis that is, just to clarify.

I agree that the UT uni's were horrendous.....

but the UGA uni’s were down right nauseating. I would hope that AU doesn’t do anything retarded in the future like bring out the orange jersey’s or wear blue pants.

I would have gone to bammer if my grades hadn't been good enough to go to AU

When they gave a game break near the end of our game for the UGA/UF game

I honestly thought it was an NFL game with the AFL throwback uniforms. The UGA jerseys were HIDEOUS. The Vols’ weren’t any better. It must have been ugly jersey day in the SEC.

What happened to Col Reb?

I thought he might be back for some crow after all the smack he talked before the season started.

It's not just Col. Reb thats conspicuously missing......

the bammers have STFU.

When I saw that Etheridge was knocked out and the Ole Miss player was under him

I figured that was the case, that the Ole MIss player wasn’t hurt but didn’t want to move out of respect for Etheridge’s neck injury. I agree with Chiz, I have no idea how he knew, unless he could just feel Zac’s body go limp on top of him. If there were an SEC sportsmanship award of the week (or the year, for that matter) I would hope he would win it. Kudos!

Good Article Jay.

I actually liked the different looks Tennessee and Georgia gave us. Alternate uniforms are never going to be as popular as the ole mainstays and that holds even truer in college football. I think its good to see something fresh.

This game restored a lot of faith for me because it proved wihout a shadow of a doubt that the first 5 games of the year weren’t a fluke, and that this coaching staff can adjust and fight through adversity. I can’t wait until we start seeing the Chizik recruits take the field and start playing some real Malzahn ball.

I like alternate uniforms, if they're done well

Regardless of nightmares I have from the UGA blackout of us, I think that’s a good alternate look. What they wore on Saturday, that was not a good look. UT could have pulled off black if they hadn’t worn the orange pants with it. The white helmet over the black jersey over the orange pants was just abysmal. I had a feeling they would do that some time this season, because I know they sold black UT jerseys over the offseason.

I think we could pull of an orange jersey (maybe for Homecoming) as long as we do it right. Don’t change the helmet or pants, just an orange jersey. Make it extremely rare, though.

I like the navy blue pants idea.

Thats the least radical change imo. Orange jerseys would be sick.

I wouldn't expect

Auburn to put big numbers up against Furman.

My hope is an early lead followed by some game time experience for the guys on the bench (what do we have like 6 or 7 subs?).

Hoping to see a good bit of Caudle so Todd can rest as well as some new faces on the D so our starters can take some time off (if we even have the players to put in there).

It will be nice to not have a game to worry over (please Tigers don’t give me reason to worry!).

Great article!

Thanks for reiterating the efforts of Scott on the field. It is hard for me to hate the Rebels. Overall, the fans are fun and the players always seem to have class. I did take pleasure ribbing my husband (who grew up going to Ole Miss games). It is great to be an Auburn Tiger. The best part about the win is that hopefully it quiets the ‘Fire-the-coaches-and-burn-the-QB’ people. This team has heart!!!

BTW, Tenn’s jerseys were about the scariest thing that I saw all Halloween, and I worked in a neighborhood Haunted House Sat night..so that’s saying something. Oh, Kiffikins, at least you schooled the Ole Ball Coach.
