Iron Bowl Thoughts... Right Now

With a couple of days to go, I have some serious waffling going on in my mind.  On the one hand, it appears that Bama is a well oiled machine, and will roll over the Tigers.  On the flip side of that, Auburn is coming into this Iron Bowl with "no chance" to win.  The last time I can remember that it was 1989.  Nothing will compare to that game and the atmosphere in Jordan-Hare will not be that electric again, especially in this 2009 matchup.

Here are my thoughts as of this moment… ask me ten minutes from now and I am sure they will have changed, at least slightly.  First and foremost is that Chris Todd will have to have a career day.  I mean a Tre Smith type of career day, one he will be remembered for.  He will have to make the perfect passes over the middle, and be able to complete the deep ball.  The Alabama secondary is not all that, but neither is Todd’s deep ball.  Terrell Zachery and Darvin Adams will have to make the plays.

Auburn will not be able to pound the ball up the middle.  Onterio McCallebb is still nursing the high ankle sprain and Ben Tate could not get free on Georgia’s defense and for sure will not be able to do it on the Tide.  The play action will be just for show, as the Tide will be to stout up front.  I also have a feeling that the Alabama blitz will be on every play.  That is assuming that they will have to blitz to get pressure on Todd.  That brings me to my next point.

The offensive line is going to have to give Chris the time to go through his reads.  The line is also going to need to keep its composure and discipline.  No penalties.  None.  When they get one it always seems to be at a drive killing moment.  So in my mind they cannot have any.  No false starts, no holds, no nothing.  Personally, I think the screen pass could be the Tigers best weapon on Friday.  Again that is assuming that the Tide blitzes on every play.

Offensively Auburn should be able to move the ball.  I think that Gus will have some tricks up his sleeve and Auburn will score on some sort of BIG play.  Alabama seems to give up plenty of yards, but locks down when they have to.  If Auburn can make it through the game with no turnovers, the game can stay relatively close.

Defensively Auburn is just plain weak.  No Eltoro at the Linebacker spot will hurt us, but with the previous bye week, Josh Bynes, Craig Stevens and Adam Herring should be well rested.  The defensive line will have to get pressure on Greg McElroy.  He is the weak link to the machine that is the Alabama offense.  If Auburn can rattle him he has been known to make the bad decision, and kill a drive.  Auburn will have to cause a least two turnovers to win, maybe one will have to be a score as well.  Mark Ingram does not fumble, so the turnovers will have to be off of McElroy.

Speaking of Ingram, I am thinking he is going to make is Heisman push against the Tigers.  Saban is not only going to want to blow Auburn out at home, but get Alabama their first Heisman winner in the process.  Auburn’s line is going to have to "get big" and plug up the holes.  Ted Roof is not going to be able to keep a LB or Safety spying on Ingram.  While in the past, I have thought that the secondary of Auburn was okay, watching Neiko Thorpe get beat deep on damn near every play against UGA is a major problem.  Walt McFadden is going to have to line up with Julio Jones, because Thorpe will get beat like a dog… again.  So Marquis Maze will be the go to guy for Alabama, especially lined up against Neiko.  Lastly, Bynes or Stevens will have to be out in coverage against Colin Peek, the Tight End of the Tide.  Neither of these guys is very good in coverage, so they will have to step up huge.  Peek is one of McElroy’s favorite targets.

Special teams will have to be just that… Special.  No turnovers!  On the cover teams, they are going to have to play better then they have all year.  Javier Arenas is amazing; I would not punt it to him under any circumstances.  Clinton Durst is going to have to earn his scholarship this week.  I hope he has been practicing his directional punts.  Wes Byrum has had a good year, if he can make some big kicks against Bama it could be a great year.  If Auburn can have a clean special teams game, it will go a long way to allowing the Tigers to pull the upset.

So as you can see, Auburn will have to have a near perfect game to hang with the Tide.  They are for real, but in my view they are still the "luckiest team in America."   Sometimes luck has to be on your side to remain undefeated.  It is well documented that the Alabama offense struggles in the red zone.  If Auburn can just hold on and keep them out of the endzone, Chris Todd and the offense could just pull out the upset.  Auburn is playing for pride and bowl position… All the pressure is on Alabama, if they win "they were supposed to."  If they lose, "they are finished when it comes to the National Championship."

Auburn could really mess up the SEC in the BCS with a huge win in Jordan-Hare.  With a win over Bama and then Bama winning against Florida neither will be in the National Championship game, and it would be quite a remarkable feat for the Tigers to keep the Tide out of the big one.

Can Auburn do it?  Damn right.  Should we as Auburn fans expect it?  No way.  Should we scream our collective heads off in attempt up pump up the players?  Count on it.

Man Neiko Thorpe!

He Has been getting beat on just about 99% of everything he’s been on all season. I’m serious, even Ball State and Furman were crushing him! It’s sad. What’s also bad is that we’re missing Travante Stallworth who was playing damn near amazing in place of Onterio before he was hurt, too. I haven’t heard anything else about his injury though…

He has been

playing more downs then anyone on the secondary because he has no relief

AUBURN is back!

by auskip07 on Nov 25, 2009 10:24 AM CST up reply actions

And unfortunately he's been beat on more downs than anyone on secondary...

…because he has no speed. I hate to see it but it’s awfully true. BTW, they’ve replaced him a couple of times this season with Desmond Washington, just for short stints. But I think Desmond Washington has subbed in for just about every position this year

by auburn tigers on Nov 26, 2009 8:05 AM CST up reply actions

I disagree entirely.....

Thorpe has had some miscues for sure but no where near the number you insinuate. And as for speed he is as fast as Mcfadden and has done a great job when he hasn’t bitten on the stutter like he did against UGA. He will end up being a very good shut down corner before his career is over at AU provided it’s not shortened for some unforseen reason.

I would have gone to bammer if my grades hadn't been good enough to go to AU

by Todd92 on Nov 26, 2009 10:03 AM CST up reply actions

It has been clear every game

and if he hasn’t been beaten he has definitely been juked to the point of no return. Honestly, i’ve only seen him recover out of mis-reads maybe 2-3 times this season. I wasn’t at the Ole Miss game so my personal number may be off…i’m just going off of what i’ve seen, no stats.

Arenas

I know i’m just nitpicking but Gilbert Arenas plays for the Washington Wizards. ;-)

by Weagle Beagle on Nov 25, 2009 7:47 AM CST reply actions

You would not believe

How often that mistake is made. Javier and Gilbert are cousins and Javy’s brother plays for Nebraska.

by RockHard10 on Nov 25, 2009 10:40 AM CST up reply actions

I didn't know that!

I recently heard about Javy’s brother at Nebraska, but I had no clue about Gilbert Arenas. You learn something new every day, I guess.

Btw, Bama fan here. First time poster. This is my last year as a UA student and I’m making my way to Jordan-Hare for the first time. I’m looking forward to the experience. Of course, by “the experience,” I mean the atmosphere that makes the Iron Bowl one of the greatest rivalries in college football, so I welcome all of the good-natured ribbing that may come my way. Here’s to no injuries, an exciting game, and Roll Tide!

If you care to share any tips on parking, good post-game locations, etc., please feel free.

Hmm, I’d have sworn I heard that just last year.

We had a chance, last year...

…..till we dropped the ball on the ground three times in the third quarter. And I DID think Auburn had a chance, going into the game:

"Luckiest team in America"

….Overall, I thought it was a well-put post, but I’m not entirely sure why Bama is the luckiest team in America….unless you are an avid proponent of conspiracy theories, I guess I just didn’t understand that comment…..

NOT flaming, just curious…….

by bhambammer on Nov 25, 2009 10:11 PM CST reply actions

Conspiracy would not be luck but would rather be planned and executed to achieve a goal....

I think that the “luck” moniker would come more from things like UT not having a place kicker that can kick it more than head high over the line of scrimmage……..but that’s not bammers fault that UT can’t kick a field goal….or like the guy in the replay booth being either blind, senile, or both for the LSU game…..again not bammers fault but lucky all the same. Bama has a great team this year and should be proud but even the best teams in the nation need a little luck to win or preserve a win…..not a slight or flame just a fact.

I would have gone to bammer if my grades hadn't been good enough to go to AU

by Todd92 on Nov 26, 2009 9:54 AM CST up reply actions

That's fair...

Although, when I watched replays of Cody’s blocks in the game I couldn’t help but notice that he man-handled UT’s center on both plays…..I don’t know if Lincoln would’ve made the second attempt no matter what trajectory the ball took….

Personally, I thought the LSU play was an INT, but I guess that is reason #1126 why I’m apparently not equipped to be a referree….

I think you are dead-on that any undefeated team (this late in the season) needs a little luck to get to that point….but I suppose I’m also of the belief that you make your own luck….you put yourself in the position to be on the advantageous side of “the breaks” and that’s what determines pivotal moments in any game…..anyway, I don’t think we even disagree on anything, I was just clarifying the original comment “luckiest team in america”…

by bhambammer on Nov 26, 2009 2:20 PM CST up reply actions

Bama will have that title from me....

because it always seems that things go Bama’s way at critical points. I am not saying that the refs do it or anything, so that is not my point at all.

Look at a couple of years ago the Ole Miss game, when a Rebel WR made a catch to put them in the FG range to win the game on the last play, but he was ruled out of bounds. Or the Tennessee Game back in maybe 06?? That was when UT was going in for the winning score and fumbled out of the endzone for a Bama touchback (and ultimately the win). The Arkansas game a couple of years back when their FG kicker shanked 2 in the fourth quarter. This year Tennessee getting two FGs blocked. While Cody made great plays… how often do two FGs get blocked in one game?

As an Auburn fan I am sure that these plays only stay in my mind because it is a Bama win. I am conceding that these types of things happen to every team, but these just stand out to me. So me and my family call Bama the luckiest team in America.

If you are a War Damn Eagle, you can War Damn anything.

Look forward to a good game

Although our secondary has come a long way since last year. Saying "it’s not all that’ is quite incorrect, although I think it will be helped by the fact you won’t be able to run the ball on us. The only thing that really scares me is you guys getting the little screen, bubble, and quick slants that have hurt us this year.

If AU's offense is able to execute without the miscues......

it will be the best offense that bammer has faced yet also (especially our rushing attack). AU’s offensive production has fallen apart only when they have managed to stop themselves with penalties and turnovers. Let’s hope for a great game and no injuries on either side.

I would have gone to bammer if my grades hadn't been good enough to go to AU

by Todd92 on Nov 26, 2009 10:00 AM CST up reply actions

I would think...

that the best offense we’ve faced this year was probably Arkansas. Our run D + Ryan Mallet pretty much meant they were going to be throwing the ball all day and we shut them down. How does Auburn’s offense compare to Arkansas’s when matched up against Bama? I think we can agree that Ben Tate isn’t going to be running it up the middle on us (but if I’m wrong, please tell me why). And our linebackers have the size and speed to get to wherever the ball is if you push it outside. Combine that with our DBs, whom I would say are better than “not all that,” and I see it being a rough day for just about any offense. I don’t follow your team so I don’t know about the WRs or anything, but I guess the point of my question is, what is different about Auburn’s offense that will allow it to succeed where Arkansas failed? The tempo?

by Espyonage on Nov 26, 2009 10:49 AM CST up reply actions

Auburn has done...

…..a good job in getting a lineman or two out on the corner to lead sweeps. With a 3 man D-line, you’ll see both guards pull a lot. Chizik’s made a lot of noise about having to double-team block Terrence Cody, but what they will REALLY try is leaving the big man unblocked, and have him trying to chase the play. Auburn wants the big guys like Mike Berry and Byron Issom out there to try and chip Rolando McClain.

……Where Auburn has gotten messed up is with teams that 1. have quick ends, and 2. play read and react. Those ends slide, and our tackles haven’t been quick enough to hook ‘em and not get caught. When the end keeps contain, it forces the play too wide, messes up the angle, and allows linebackers and secondary folk to close. Your Bama matchup to watch will be Ziemba and Andrew McCain, vs. Brandon Deaderick and Lorenzo Washington. Gus Malzhan’s offense is tailor-made to take advantage of aggressive defensive play. If Auburn can successfully minimize the play of Bama’s line on sweeps, the back seven will either have to concede some yards on the corner, or rotate over to stop it. That sets up the counters and reverses.

by Acid Reign on Nov 26, 2009 11:52 AM CST up reply actions

Wow.

Thanks a lot for that info. Excellent analysis. That’s what I’m going to be looking for at the game, now. And if it really is possible to “take advantage of aggressive defensive play” like that, then I’m actually a little worried. It’s using our best asset against us!
