Bandwagon
While everyone is jumping back on the Auburn Bandwagon, I would like to say that you should have never gotten off. I am sure that if you are reading this now, you have been with us all season. The writers here have tried to give the facts where they are necessary and opinions whether they are necessary or not. My posts seem to be more on the opinion side, and I leave the facts to the stat man that is Acid Reign.
My opinion this week revolves around what I saw on Halloween. I saw a team that came out inspired. I saw a team that knew they were going to be in for a fight and were willing to go 12 rounds if need be. Most importantly, I saw a team that was prepared. While Coach Gene Chizik has done many great things for our Auburn Tigers this season, he has been criticized for not having our team prepared. I think that Arkansas and Kentucky are prime examples of this. Well, we can not add the Ole Miss game to that list.
Let’s start with the defense; they were as prepared as I have seen them this season. Ted Roof knew that Dexter McCluster was going to be 75-80 percent of the offense for the Rebels and he drew up a pretty good scheme to slow it down. You cannot stop McCluster, he is that good. He can do almost anything on the football field. Roof and the boys did a good job of containing him late in the game. Some of that could be due to a bit of an injury, but the defense played well against him.
Roof and Tracy Rocker also knew that if the Tigers could get pressure on Jevan Snead, he would make some mistakes. The defensive line got more pressure on an opposing QB then we have seen this season. My one issue with the D line is that the ends still lose containment. Case in point is the 20 yard scramble by Snead on a 3rd and 19.
The secondary stepped up big in this game as well. Walter McFadden made a great play on the interception. How he knew that it was tipped up to him I have no idea. During the play I was sure it was short hopped. Good job also must go to the official for not blowing the whistle and stopping play. Darren Bates also played well, he did have so mistakes but he is growing into a solid player.
The only real complaint I have is that Auburn could have turned the Rebels over at least 4 more times. The opening kickoff fumble would have been huge, as well as three sure interceptions were dropped. Auburn cannot let those opportunities slip away and beat a better team.
On the offensive side of the ball, I still have to give all the credit to Ben Tate. That man is playing is butt off. Too bad Auburn has the three game losing streak or he could be in the post season award discussion. He is playing like a man possessed. He runs hard on every play. One particular one he was about to break free from the pile for a long run, but the refs blow the play dead. Gus Malzahn also used Mario Fannin a bit more than we have seen in the past few games. I like to see that. Mario can be a game changer. He just needs to hold onto the ball a bit better. Remember he lost that fumble out of bounds. Maybe Gus heard me say that they needed to throw to Tommy Trott and Kodi Burns some, because it happened. Kodi made a great catch on a 3rd down and Tommy had a TD. Trott also had that big drop, but we can forgive him this time.
Rating Chris Todd in this game is hard for me. He did some very good things. He did seem to have more control over his passes, but the deep ball is still shaky. Were it not for two spectacular catches by Terrell Zachery, Todd’s numbers would not have looked so good. Darvin Adams also stepped back up and made a couple of plays. Chris made a couple of bad decisions; the biggest one was the sack where he kind of tossed the ball away like a backhanded pass. At least that is the way it looked in replay. Live it looked like a straight fumble, but in slow motion it was some sort of terrible attempt at a pass. I also think that he continues to hold on to the ball too long. He needs to speed up the clock in his head a bit. Overall he managed the game well, and a win is a win.
Lastly, my "What the hell" play call. Was it just me or did Gus seem to be out thinking himself a couple of times. In the third quarter after Ole Miss had cut into the lead, Auburn had a 3rd and 5 near midfield. The Tigers lined up in the wildcat with Kodi… Ole Miss stacked 9 (yes 9) in the box, and Kodi ran the keeper up the middle for no gain. So what does Gus do… we go for it on 4th and 5. On the next play Todd throws deep and over the head of Adams and turns it over on downs. My problem was not going for it on 4th. My issue was the play calling in that situation. On third down why not line up as normal and either run Tate or hit Fannin in the flats. If you don’t make it, you are already prepared to go for it on fourth anyways and at least you gave yourself a shot a gaining some yardage. It just seemed like a waste to me… but I am not a coach and they are all smarter than me. War Eagle guys… hopefully they will get some rest this weekend against Furman. With Georgia and Alabama looming we need everyone healthy.

Thanks, Zach!
……Although, like some newspaper guys, I’m guilty a lot of time of trying to find stats to back up my opinion!
……As far as iffy play-calling goes, my big one was in the first half, when we went on 4th and a yard. Tate had already been stopped short on third down. On fourth, we lined up with a tight end, wideouts, and no fullback, and gave it to Tate again towards the same hole. Got nothing.
……My ideal of a short yardage offense would be your standard I-formation jumbo set. Trott and McKenzie at tight end, and Mario at wingback, likely in motion. Eric Smith at fullback, Kodi at QB, and Ben Tate as a tailback. With the motion, you could do SO many things! Sneak, jet handoff to Fannin once in a while, power handoff to Tate to the strong side (with the bootleg out the back side off of it.), the belly play to Smith, or even the straight dive. Sure would beat trying the shotgun or the one-back against a stacked short-yardage defense!
I'm not comfortable with it either.....
but asking someone who lines up at shotgun 70+ games to get under center for 1 or 2 snaps a game is asking for trouble as well. Not sure what the answer is but be careful what you ask for…….I have seen way too many bobbled snaps when you put a shotgun QB under center in a rare occasion.
I would have gone to bammer if my grades hadn't been good enough to go to AU
We run stuff under center about 5 plays a game
I don’t see why everyone is so afraid of it, just because we fumbled one snap on a sneak against Arkansas. Teams fumble snaps all the time whether they run the spread or not.
And, in a related story, this week marked the 5,000th performance of the Broadway musical "Cats." It also marked the 5,000th time a guy turned to his wife and said, "What the hell is this?"
Right on the money
If the coaching staff would have made these decisons a few weeks ago we would likely have another win under our belt, but it’s their first year and their still meshing as a staff.
In my opinion, the fumble by Todd was absolutely inexcusable for a Senior Quarterback. If I was the coach I would have seriously considered letting that play be the end of his career. We were deep in our own territory on 4th down and not only does he take a sack, he turns the ball over. Although I’m glad that he was able to weather the storm through all of the adversity, I’ll also be glad when he is gone.
I really think that the future is bright for the Tigers as long as we can close the deal in recruiting.

I agree.....
but had the refs got it right it would have been intentional grounding and not a fumble.
I would have gone to bammer if my grades hadn't been good enough to go to AU
well done Zach...
I picked this team to go 9-3 this year for the regular season, that is still possible. This team has been so hard to get a handle on offensively, that almost anything can happen.
The defense is starting to get turned around and then another major injury hits. WOW! They still finished good last week.
My point is, this team shows areas of brilliance, and then stumbles around awhile. Considering the facts, a new staff, new schemes, etc. This team has shown one thing. They are together. They are a team. They are Auburn!

Arkansas and Kentucky
I dont hold Arkansas against the coaching staff as much as I do Kentucky. The Arkansas team that showed up to play Auburn was far bettewr than the team they had been up to that point in the season. AU wasnt as ready as they should have been, but more than that Arkansas just played balls out.
Kentucky on the other hand was a disappointment from first whistle to last.
The difference last week came down to two things: Lack of penalties and Defense.
AU wasn’t constantly shooting itself in the foot, losing momentum, and completely nullifying any good work with stupid pemalties.
On D, they were finally playing like they knew what they were doing. Guys were wrapping up, they were hitting people, and El Torro continued to play like a man possessed (Kudos to Chizik for leaving him home on the road games to get his point across, seems to have worked).
Now if we can just get the damn special teams on task…

i honestly can't blame AU fans for frustration...on and off the bandwagon
great points on the game…so happy to see that fannin is getting the ball…and i thought that the D had a helluva game. we didn’t stop the ole miss offense by any stretch, but the AU Dsquad really set a tone for the game…and the 3rd down run by snead was really a lucky blown play in my opinion…
part of me wondered if we were going to get out muscled up front on defense and ole miss / snead was going to have all day to throw, but our line really got snead out of any kind of rhythm.
i can’t blame fans for getting on and off the bandwagon with Auburn. what has the team given us in the past few years?… serious inconsistency.
it feels like it has been some time since we have played consistently (consitently good OR bad… one way or the other) …and this can drive fans nuts.(including me)
the most difficult are the games where the effort, excitement, and enthusiasm don’t seem to be there…we as fans sit and watch the team just going through the motions…in the SEC, you will get killed if you show up with no fire. (ala LSU)
i agree with your post- this game, had a strong feel that Auburn was prepared defensively, and had a new strategy offensively (getting some other folks involved more, etc…. and as it seemed on the boob tube,…the fans were really up for this game at jordan hare. heres to hoping the focus and fire stays for the rest of the season. if so, i think we’ll take it to GA serious like, and finish with a strong show against ’bama at home.

Congrats Tigers..
for your win this past saturday against our rebs. The tigers came ready to play, the rebels didn’t. WDE is somewhat in the same position as our Rebels with 3 losses already, but still a lot left to play for. Rest assured though, when yall play Bammer, I will root for Auburn as if they were my own. Step it war eagle, you can do it. Beat Bama
P.S. I completely feel your pain on the inconsistency remark. the only thing our Rebs have been able to do this year is be consistently inconsistent.
