Hey Its Contagious !

Jordan-Hare Stadium before 2009 Iron Bowl

The Auburn family loves their Tigers.  Iron Bowl Tiger Walk November 27th, 2009.

In my 51 years of attending Auburn Football games, I have never been more proud of my Auburn Tigers than I was Friday night at Jordan Hare. Don't misunderstand, I'm claiming no moral victory. I was just as disappointed in the loss as any other Tiger fan. However I'm still proud of how our coaches had the team ready to play , proud of the game plan, and especially proud of the way  our boys clawed, scratched, and fought all through the game. There was no quit in this group .They were not intimidated,  in fact they played the role of the intimidator. This team will always be special to alot of people, include me at the top of that list.

They have come a long way from last December. Chizik said then that he was going to build a foundation for the future the right way...that he had "come to Auburn to recruit, to compete, and to win." Since arriving , the coaching staff has recruited well, had the team competitive in every game except LSU, and produced a winning season(narrowly missing a 9-3 season by literally seconds in the last two games).

Another goal, one that was just as important, was cemented in the Iron Bowl. Stan White said Friday night that the coaches and team had brought the Auburn Family together. Well if anyone has watched the weekly "Auburn Everyday" show they could see that family emphasis in every show.  Every Auburn fan should watch " Auburn Everyday". If you can't get this show on your television, you need to go to  www.auburntigers.com all access, it will be worth every penny.

No matter  what the causes for last season's disappointments, not one of us hurt more than our players. That foundation  began and continued with building that healing family atmosphere, from Chizik and his staff.  That this major goal of "Family" was reached this year is evidenced by Ben Tate's  remarks, "I can't even explain how far we've come. Coach Chizik and his staff have done a great job with us. We were more together, more like a family.... before he came, I never experienced that camaraderie. These are the best coaches I've ever been around."

When you have that kind of "Family" feeling on a team, it spills over to the fans... it's contagious. It was easy to see just how contagious Friday night, when the fans chanted "It's Great To Be An Auburn Tiger" as the team left the field. I joined in the chant from section 14 and I "ll say it again here (still after 51 years)... it's truly GREAT TO BE AN AUBURN TIGER !

It was one of the coolest moments of sports I’ve ever felt. Gave me chills. I don’t know if that happens anywhere else.

The bammers

Are very upset that we are happier in our effort then they were in their win LOL

AUBURN is back!

Upset?

….not really….more perplexed than anything else. I think most Bama fans (I can only speak for myself, I suppose) are just surprised at how elated the Auburn nation seems to be from what took place in the Iron Bowl.
If the joy was genuinely rooted in the idea that you felt like Chizik was taking the team in the right direction, I would totally understand (and agree with) that concept.
HOWEVER….I’ve seen hundreds of comments on al.com, tet, etc. from Auburn fans who are truly excited by the fact that the Tigers “clawed, scratched, and fought all through the game.” Did you honestly expect anything less? Auburn was playing their bitter in-state rival and had “nothing to lose” whereas Alabama’s NC hopes could be dashed. What did you honestly expect them to do? Lay down and die?
Just as a reminder (not a flame): Auburn’s efforts ultimately produced another “L” on the ole record books. Not once in my life have I taken satisfaction out of a game in which Alabama lost just because they “played hard.” I expect them to do so, and anything short of that is inexcusable.
Perhaps Bama fans have too high expectations, but at the end of the day, this is a results-oriented business and simply being “scrappy” doesn’t cut it in my book. Had the roles been reversed (and they certainly were several years ago) I would be heartbroken to have my team come so close to beating Auburn at their program’s highest caliber, only to fall short in the end.
Was Alabama picked to win handidly? Sure….but were I wearing orange and blue on Saturday, I wouldn’t be able to shake the feeling that my team came this close to knocking off the #2 team in the country, and my most hated rival…..but ultimately lost.
Everyone is entitled to their own opinions, but I think seeing a fanbase derive actual joy from a “close game” is either 1) a sad barometer for where the program expectations have fallen or 2) just plain bizarre.

by bhambammer on Dec 1, 2009 9:15 AM CST up reply actions

I don’t think they’re deriving joy from a close game, but that they are actually getting better (and they are). The joy stems from anticipation and hope about the future and where they’re going, not where they’ve been.

Like I said:

Everyone is entitled to their own thoughts and opinions, but I’ve never been excited about a loss to Auburn….No matter how lopsided the contest was supposed to be. Being hopeful is one thing….but “hope” is for next season. When presented with an opportunity, I would like my team to pull off their victories this season……That’s just me.

Thanks squinky...and your right.

Then, stop worrying about what you think Auburn folks are doing, bro!
“I would be heartbroken to have my team come so close … only to fall short in the end.”

Then bhambammer, you must have been really heartbroken last December; and you must have been really, really heartbroken last January!

Those Gators and those Latter-Day Utes were mighty tough weren’t they, bro? LOL

by xotus on Dec 1, 2009 10:03 AM CST up reply actions

yes, I certainly was....

….that’s kinda my point, isn’t it? I hated the way last season ended because we lost….I went to the SECCG and was incredibly disappointed……and guess what? Alabama scrapped and played their hearts out…..but we were simply outgunned. We could have won, but didnt….Same situation as the Iron bowl IMO.

by bhambammer on Dec 1, 2009 10:30 AM CST up reply actions

Well, here's kinda my point:

Worry about your own self and leave us the hell alone. Thank you.

by xotus on Dec 1, 2009 11:48 AM CST up reply actions

We...

still support our team win or lose. We don’t put our flags up when we’re having rough seasons-we’re always proud to be an Auburn Tiger whether or not it’s all that great of a team. We didn’t like losing-hell no, I hated it. But, we’re still proud of who we are at the end of the day and the sun still rises.

by Sparkey on Dec 1, 2009 8:46 PM CST up reply actions

Hmm...

So it would have better for you if we would have just left the game when alabama scored the go ahead TD. Then come monday, called into the Finebaum show screaming to the world how we should have won and that the program is in shambles with a terrible group of coaches leading the charge. Yeah would have just tickled all bammers everywhere.

I prefer to think that we as fans know that Auburn is at its lowest point in 10 years with barely enough scholarship players to field a defense while trying to establish a whole new coaching staff. Yet eventhough no one, especially bammers, gave us a shot in hell of even keeping the game close, Auburn almost upset the number 2 ranked team in the nation. A team that a former coach of the tide (Ray Perkins) said was the best bama team ever. I keep hearing that there are no moral victories in the Iron Bowl, but fuck that. We did something that no other team in the conference has done against that mighty defense. And we did it with much less than anybody else has in their arsonal. Hell we started our 3rd and last scholarship linebacker on the team. Keep in mind that he played the whole game because there was no one to back the LB’s up. No rest for the wierry i suppose. (You don’t think that you were able to pass over the middle all night because bama is just that good do you?) That points to better things in the future. When we are back to full strength. Atleast with 85 scholarship players to chose from.

So i don’t give a rats ass what you think we should or shouldn’t be feeling about the game and “the loss”. I’m very proud of this staff for their game planning and preparation, and this team for their execution of the plan and their heart to keep the wheel churning. If this is as good as bama is going to get then ya’ll could be in for a rude awakening when we get back to full strength.

by Paratiger on Dec 1, 2009 10:34 AM CST up reply actions

Not quite....

I think “the bammers” are more upset that Auburn scored some of their points by by intercepting Bama’s calls. You guys exposed some serious weaknesses, and the general consensus is that Bama did not play well (as Auburn came out ready to play), but having to admit that Auburn was smart enough to figure out some of our play calls is a killer to admit :-P.

(Yes, I’m being facetious and hyperbolic in this next comment; I don’t think all Auburn fans, coaches, and players are stupid, just as I don’t think all Bama’s are smart (e.×.: Shula))
If the barn can figure out some of our play calls, then anyone can!

(Ok, back to serious now)
That having been said, my workplace has been fairly mixed: both Auburn and Bama fans are upset by either the performance or the outcome, with levels of pride for Auburn fans coming from the fact that Auburn came out ready to play. Bama fans can retort, “But you still lost,” but that snappy response looses its luster as any Alabama fan knows it should have been was expected to be a much larger margin of victory.

I guess we’ll find out next year if this year’s game was a fluke or a forshadowing…

If anyone was there after the game ended

The whole stadium of Auburn fans as the team was walking off the field kept yelling “Its Great to be an Auburn Tiger” They were proud, I was proud. We did alot of winning when i was at school there 02-07 i went to alot of games and i would have to say this game felt different. Regardless of the loss.

AUBURN is back!

Absolutley....

It did feel different. The way that all the fans cheered for the team after the game was really inspiring. And i’m sure that it made a strong impression on the recruits. All 120+ of them that were there. Good Stuff for sure….

You're doing something right...

…..on your first fan post, if you get that kind of response from the other camp! Nice job. They can’t stand it, can they?

by Acid Reign on Dec 1, 2009 7:31 PM CST reply actions

Thank you....

First off i would like to apologize to everyone(except that one bama fan) for the way i went about discussing this thread yesterday. I lost control of my emotions and it got the best of me in a bad way. I suppose its what makes us human. But i was wrong to say the things i said in the way that i said them. I could have gone about in a better more adult way, and for that i’m truly sorry. Secondly, Thank you for erasing all of it as it was not for the young to see….hehe. I will try to do better in the future to keep my emotions in check as i very much like all you guys and your input into all things Auburn.

Thanks and sorry……

I apologize when I'm sorry.

I’m not sorry on this one. They came trolling and I brought a house of fire back on them. I like Kong at the Gates, and squinky86, and even Zoltar to an extent. The rest are pretty sorry if you ask me. No apologies from me. You’re a good man Paratiger. Don’t let anybody tell you different.

hehe....

Well thanks guys. Its not that i feel regret for what i said to him (Fuck him), I just hate that i lost my cool with that idiot and cussed so bad on this board. It was funny but ultimately not the right choice to make. I should have taken the high road or atleast expressed my opinion of his ignorance in a more mature manner.

by Paratiger on Dec 2, 2009 3:57 PM CST up reply actions

Question… "Wat hi school football player in the state of alabama would want too play for that migit sabin? Alabama has peeked already, they aint got nuthin but a couple a 8-9 win seasons left in em befor them bammers start callin for sabin’s job. Who do they have for next year? no cody, no mcclain, no ingram (he’ll be goin to the nfl) no arenas, there entire defensive line is GONE! Evrybody can see that somethin majical is brewing down on the planes and every hi school player in the state knows it. The auburn family is as close as ever rite now. Bamas best prospect for 2010 is gunna be a bust. SEC is auburn bate! with tebow gone, and chizik gettin his own recruits, theirs noone to stop us. WAR DAMN EAGLE

by ChizInYourFACE on Dec 2, 2009 9:54 PM CST reply actions

Excellent post!!!

I was so proud of Auburn! Was it frustrating to come that close to winning?….not really. not when all of those players played with so much heart. it is perfectly understandable why the bammers don’t get it.
