It's Time For The Best Rivalry In Sports
I've said it before, and I'll say it again...
The Auburn - Georgia rivalry is the best and most unique in all of college football. Forget the Iron Bowl - it has gotten way too mean and personal. Watching the Iron Bowl is like passing a kidney stone. It only feels good at the end - and that's assuming you win.
As we ramp up for the South's Oldest Rivalry, never has a 7-3 record felt so good. Last week I commented in a thread that Amen Corner (games with Georgia and Alabama) make bad seasons good and good ones great. This year may be the exception. Considering the circumstances, this season has been pretty darn good already, regardless of what happens in the final month.
I'll stop short of saying winning the last two games of the year is gravy - we know better. However, regardless of what happens from here on out, this Auburn season has been special. I'll gladly spend late December in Shreveport with a huge smile on my face.
What a difference a year makes.
One year ago, Tommy Tuberville was circling the drain, though no one really believed it. Auburn limped into the Georgia game after losing four of its last five and stood at 5-5 overall. It was the worst of times for the Auburn faithful.
The job Gene Chizik has done since his arrival makes those events seem like years ago. Even Saturday's win over Furman had a feel of bigness to it - not because of what happened on the field, but what took place on Friday.
The commitment of Little Rock, Arkansas running back Michael Dyer may be the biggest in school history. The top rated back in the country according to ESPN, Dyer could have literally attended any school in the country. He chose Auburn and that says a lot.
He may become the next Bo Jackson or Alan Evans. It doesn't matter. That's not what's important here. What matters is that this staff can sell the Auburn program to the best in the nation and win. The Dyer commitment will likely have a domino effect that will bring in more four and five star recruits in the coming weeks. Again, what a difference a year makes.
Now we turn our attention to Georgia. Who would have guessed back in the summer that more heat would be on the seat of Georgia's Mark Richt than on Auburn's Chizik? A wounded program is a dangerous one. Ask Georgia. They nearly lost to Tuberville's Tigers last year despite being better in every department. Saturday should be another classic.
While this year's edition will not have national or conference ramifications, the stakes are in some ways much higher. Chizik is looking for an eighth win in a year when six would have been cause for celebration. He's laying a foundation where year one results mean everything to the future of a program. And ultimately, as with all Auburn coaches, Chizik will be judged by his record against Georgia and Alabama.
Richt is feeling heat for the first time in his career. Georgia Athletic Director Damon Evans has not been overly supportive in his public statements about Richt this season. While his job is not in jeopardy, he knows staff changes will have to come at year's end. A win over Auburn and Georgia Tech can do wonders in cooling a warm backside.
Auburn vs. Georgia is special. It's family. The two schools have more inbreeding than the local dog pound. The connections between the two programs are fascinating and so intertwined that at times it's downright weird.
Even this blog owes something to Georgia. When we started Track'em Tigers three seasons ago, the first SB Nation blogger to welcome us was T Kyle King over at Dawg Sports.com. We literally had no traffic for days and then he welcomes us to SB Nation on his site and we have a rash of well wishes from Georgia fans. It was pretty cool. I just can't picture that happening anywhere else.
King loves to write that he hates Auburn, but I know better. His actions speak louder than his words. As we build up to the game this week, be sure to stop by his site to get a Georgia prospective. And as always, we'll be with you throughout the week. War Eagle!

Thanks for the note...
looking forward to your coverage this week. Best of luck Saturday!

I agree that the South’s Oldest Rivalry is one of the most unique as well as underrated rivalries in all of sports. There aren’t many other rivalries that date back to 1892 and none of them have the national or conference implications or history that this game has. With the cumulative score of 1,747-1,698 in Georgia’s favor and a per-game average of 15.60-15.16, there isn’t a closer rivalry in the world.
Auburn is the only other team I’d like to see go 13-1 on a season. You can guess who that one loss should be from.
GO DAWGS!
this is real SEC backyard southern brawl at its best on tap this Saturday...
well written notes on the year, and where we stand going into the GA game. love the inbreeding dog pound gimmick,… but the cats are going to get crazy loose this weekend.
if we manage to bring the same intensity to this game that we did at home against ole miss, we’ll win by 17 points or so. this GA team is not as good as ole miss…and i just don’t think that athens carries much of a homefield advantage against Auburn for some reason. got to go grab this one and keep the momentum going with the recruiting…hype our team up for a competitive show in the iron bowl to finish the season strong. with a good strong showing at GA, i could see our homefield fans really getting up for the iron bowl this year and making jordan hare absolutely nuts on nov. 28.

and I’m glad to have found this site. As a lifelong Bulldog from the east side of the state of Georgia, I grew up hating Auburn and romanticizing the rivalry (term used loosely) with Alabama and pulling for Bama more often that not. This was easy to do knowing that I had seen numerous beatdowns from Auburn (97 and 99 come to mind) and a few hearbreakers (2001 and 2005 come to mind).
We moved to the Gulf Coast last year before the 2007 season started, watched the UGA/Bama game with Bama fans, and I haven’t had a good thing to say about Bama since. Until given reason otherwise, Auburn will be the team I pull for in the Iron Bowl, and Bama will be the team I will almost always pull against in any matchup.
Thanks again, and let’s hope for a great matchup this weekend.
Glad you came over to the good side....
and yeah I will be watching the Game with a few dawg fans also as usual. I usually attend the game with Dawg fans but this year I am stuck at home. I typically root for UGA except against AU as well. War Damn Eagle!!!!
I would have gone to bammer if my grades hadn't been good enough to go to AU
Good post
As a Dawg fan that started at UGA in 2002, my favorite game memory is still the 2002 last second victory at Auburn. It’s definitely an old and traditional rivalry, and a game I look forward to every year. Auburn fans are usually among the classier we face (although I am comparing you to LSU, Florida, and Ga Tech fans). Good luck to y’all on Saturday and the rest of the season. At the very least, you can say Gene Chizik > Lane Kiffen
I dunno
Lane’s bunch has started to come on strong. If they beat Ole Miss on Saturday, they should finish at 8-4 with a likely trip to Tampa. Jonathan Crompton is leading the SEC in TD passes. Let me repeat that: Jonathan F. Crompton is leading the SEC in TD passes. He’s been fantastic since the 4th quarter of the Auburn game.
And, in a related story, this week marked the 5,000th performance of the Broadway musical "Cats." It also marked the 5,000th time a guy turned to his wife and said, "What the hell is this?"

As the Knights whio say Nii would say

I have noticed over the years....
that they take insult from our pruning of their shrubbery. And yes I have pruned them…..and it was good.

Jay, Well said.
I’ve personally always felt there was and is a mutual respect between Auburn and Georgia. It may have something to do with the fact that I’m a native Texan and didn’t receive my full indoctrination to the plethora of SEC rilvaries until I enrolled at UGA in 2001. That it’s the South’s oldest rivalry coupled with the fact that there have been some GREAT games played over the years only adds icing to the cake in my opinion. While my wish is for my Dawgs to emerge victorious this Saturday, I also wish y’all the best of luck for the remainder of the season.
Go Dawgs!
Well
That’s enough of the love in for UGA…WEA, let me know when it’s time to let it fly.

I usually enjoy you guys
However, my roommate is an Auburn grad and this week has turned into a de facto Hate Week for us. I think neither of us want to be the last person home from work because we are afraid of what atrocities the other has performed.

This is one of my favorite weeks in Auburn football!!
I love this game. There is something absolutely reckless about it that makes it fun. I am hoping that the Tigers build on their confidence from Saturday and bring home some shrubbery.
Bring it on DAWGS! The Tigers will have you whining and running backwards with your tails between your legs by games end. This is our year! War Eagle!!!
