A Head-Scratching Snub.
War Eagle, everybody. The post-season All-SEC teams are out now, and there aren't too many surprises. It looks like some reporters and sports information directors simply copied their preseason list over again. I guess they DID pay enough attention that Jevan Snead didn't get any votes.
I'd say the biggest surprise of the All-SEC voting was the complete absence of Auburn wide receiver Darvin Adams in the voting. The media voters select 5 wide receivers. Statistically, Darvin Adams was 5th in receptions, 4th in receiving yards per game, 3rd in receiving yards, 2nd in yards per catch, and tied for the lead in receiving touchdowns. In fact, there's not a single statistical category that Adams WASN'T in the top five. Somehow, Joe Adams of Arkansas made it in ahead of Adams, despite catching TWENTY fewer balls! Adams also finished behind Florida's Riley Cooper, despite having more catches, more yards per catch, and more touchdowns. A similar argument could be made against LSU's Brandon LaFell: fewer yards, and fewer yards per catch. Even compared to the starting All-SEC unit, Darvin Adams had a better yards per catch stat and more touchdowns than Shay Hodge of Ole Miss. When comparing Adams to Georgia's A. J. Green, Adams had more yards, more catches, a better yards per catch average, and more touchdowns. HOW does Adams not get AT LEAST honorable mention notice?
On the season, Darvin Adams finished with 48 catches for 855 yards and 10 touchdowns. War Eagle, Darvin Adams!
In another predictable but irritating snub, kicker Wes Byrum was left out of the all-star balloting. Byrum hit on 14 of 15 field goal attempts, and made all 49 of his extra point attempts. Byrum connected on 93.3 percent of his field goals. The selected All-SEC starter Leigh Tiffin was only good on 87.9 percent of his field goals, and missed THREE extra points. Second-team selection Blair Walsh only hit 90.5 percent of his field goals. What makes Byrum's snub easier to take is that he essentially lost because Auburn was scoring touchdowns in the red zone, rather than settling for 3. The Tigers converted 76% of their red-zone appearances into touchdowns, and got points 94% of the time overall.
There isn't an official offensive lineman stat page on the SEC website. But I'd take Auburn's Lee Ziemba over most of the 2nd team offensive linemen, and a couple of the starters. Ziemba finished in the "honorable mention" category, surely a result of false starts. The sad fact is that Ziemba earned his reputation for jumping off in previous years. This year, he's actually been penalized less than you think! On false starts, Lee had 1 against La Tech, 1 against WVa, 1 against Furman, 1 against Georgia, and one against Alabama. That's a total of 5 false starts in a 12 game season, which is not many for a starting left tackle. Ziemba had no holding calls against him, all year. And the only other penalty was on his ineligible catch in the Georgia game. How many sacks did Ziemba give up? I don't remember but one, and it was when Ziemba was trying to get over on a corner blitz that was probably not even his responsibility. All in all, Lee Ziemba was the best lineman on a pretty tough Auburn unit.
Let's hear it for the left-out Tigers that led our team! War Eagle!
Other Musings from Championship Week, after the jump.
Once again, we see the need in the Football Bowl Subdivision for a post-season playoff. The argument against undefeated TCU and Boise State for playing in weak, non-BCS leagues is somewhat legit. Big East Champ Cincinnati plays in a BCS conference, went undefeated, and got left out. Rather than play for a national title, Cincy will be taking on a frustrated Gator group. Coach Brian Kelly appears to be headed for Notre Dame, and the Bearcats will be facing a fired up Gator group without their leader. It's a bitter end to a great Cincy season.
As to the Texas Longhorns, has there ever been a more disrespected number two team in the national title game? Oh, yes! I remember about 17 years ago the national press was moaning over a team that had a whole schedule full of single-digit wins, that would NEVER be able to challenge the top-ranked Hurricanes. I think we all remember how that 1993 Sugar Bowl turned out, with the Tide stomping Miami into goo. I'd suggest that the Tide not take Texas lightly. The book on the Longhorns is to contain McCoy and cover Shipley. However, the overlooked part of the 'horn team is their run defense. Alabama will have a tough time replicating their SEC Championship Game effort on offense, I think.
Fellow track'em writer War Eagle Atlanta posted an excellent question earlier this week: Will Auburn fans cheer for the Tide, or the Longhorns? If Alabama loses, I'll snicker and try to get glimpses of Nick Saban's face on the sideline. But there is no hairy way I really want the SEC to lose the BCS title game. We'll never hear the end of it, from the national media, if the SEC loses that game. Yes, I want Alabama to win. No, I absolutely will NOT be screaming "Roll Tide" at my TV that night. Hopefully, I'll be sitting quietly in my chair with a Klondike and a stinger, enjoying a good football game.
It's a difficult time to be a Florida Gator. One of the prices for success is that your assistant coaches become hot commodities. Florida's loss of Tim Tebow pales compared to the amount of talent and experience that has left the Florida coaching staff in the past two seasons. How Urban Meyer rebuilds his staff will be key. It could be a tough transition period ahead.
What a difference a year makes! This time last season, we were jeering the Auburn coaching search. This year, we're cheering a promising foundation, and lauding Jay Jacobs' pitch to the Outback Bowl. Well done, sir, well done!

It is a travesty that Adams was left off the selections. Also, Byrom is definitely one of the best kickers in the league. Ziemba, well, he is a damn good lineman, but those penalties have taken their toll.

I agree wholeheartedly about a playoff. The BCS is biased, the voting is self-serving, and too many teams are getting shafted. The quality of college football is increasing across the nation. The days of a few great programs dominating the sport are over. So the old way of selecting the top teams is no longer valid.
TEXAS vs UAT
Do I dislike Alabama a whole lot? Absolutely. Do I want the SEC to win every bowl game? Absolutely. The latter wins out over the former.
I know what a Klondike is, but what’s a stinger?
Start with a 16 oz. thermal mug...
…..add ice cubes, then fill halfway with 80-proof brandy, then fill the rest of the way with 100-proof Rumplemintz. Don’t try to drive after drinking the whole thing! Finish two, and walking gets difficult…

As always Acid...
…a good thought provoking article. I understand (a little) about the Darvin Adams snub given the media’s love for LSU & bama the last 2-3 years. I don’t like it and I don’t agree with it. But I there is NO WAY Byrom is not 1st team ALL SEC . Tiffin got it on first his school name, second on his family name, and third on his stats.
As for the NC "HOOK EM HORNS ! "

I still don't think it is that big of a snub that Darvin didn't make the cut.
We talked about about Darvin’s comparable SEC stats on the fan post. I don’t think his SEC numbers were noticeably better than the 4 guys who made the cut.
One thing that nobody points out is that he isn’t on the coaches list either. To me this means the coaches didn’t feel he was worth extra game planning to stop. The other 4 guys, AJ Green, Brandon LaFell, Shay Hodge, and Julio Jones were all established threats drawing double teams all year and still put up great numebers. I’m not sure that Darvin drew the same attention this year, although he probably will next year.
What is an Auburn fan’s argument to Les Miles about Darvin?
Auburn Fan: Hey Les, what is up with you not voting for Darvin Adams for All-SEC WR?
Les: Darvin who? Is that the kid that my All-SEC CB Patrick Peterson shut down in the Auburn game this year? I think he finished with 0 catches, is that right? Hell, Julio, AJ, and Shay all caught TD passes on us. Why don’t you go ask Gene Chizik why he didn’t vote Patrick Peterson for FIRST team All-SEC instead of second team. I think that is a better question to ask.
at least get it right
Our O Line didnt give todd enough time to find any recievers
Remember how well Javier Arenas shut down Adams? he didnt…..
AUBURN is back!
Oh, so now we are going to take into account the O-line and QB?
Our QB and O-line was worse than Auburns by any measure. So was UGA’s. So was Ole Miss’s.
Darvin had less catches and TD’s than AJ, Brandon, and Shay.
You may have a legit argument against Julio here, but like I said before, I think coaches are more scared of Julio than Darvin.
And about Arenas...
If you want to make a case why Arenas shouldn’t be first team All-SEC that is a real debate.
Arenas:
Passes Broken Up – 4
+
Passes Intercepted – 3
=
Passes Defended – 7
Peterson:
Passes Broken Up – 13
+
Passes Intercepted – 2 (Let’s not forget the INT that was stolen from him in the Bama game….Hmmm)
=
Passes Defended – 15
I think that is a much bigger snub that Arenas made 1st team over Peterson than Julio over Darvin.
I was making a case for how well a first team SEC Defender (arenas)
Stopped or didnt stop Adams. Head to head Arenas was beat more times then not
AUBURN is back!
My case was that Arenas is overrated and that Patrick Peterson is the better DB.
Why don’t we compare how each of the WR’s in question performed against the best two CB’s in the league…Patrick Peterson (LSU) and Joe Haden (Florida)?
Shouldn't you take into account
how many times a DB was covering the receiver for whom the pass was intended?
I’m not saying that this would change your argument, because I don’t know what the numbers would say. However, using your argument about the coaches and their game planning, they obviously felt like Javier Arenas was a bigger game changer than Peterson.
And……..ROLL TIDE

"Less" Miles didn't vote....
he had his assistant do it because he was busy calling Mack Brown to get advice on clock management strategy.
I would have gone to bammer if my grades hadn't been good enough to go to AU
No
Les did vote. The form is on his desk. When asked for comment he said he thought he still had 3 months to get it sent in.

Jonno makes an interesting point,
…..but since when do out of conference games not count? Or only non-con games against “good teams” count? If that’s the case, then we must eliminate Joe Adams, because Arkansas played Missouri State, Texas A&M, Eastern Michigan, and Troy. Shame on Riley Cooper, for catching passes against Charleston Southern, Troy, Florida International, and Florida State! Let’s not leave Marshay Green out, he padded his stats against Memphis, Southeastern Louisiana, UAB and Northern Arizona! Hey, at least Auburn played (and beat) West Virginia, who’s going to a New Year’s Day bowl!
…..Most SEC teams play a slate of cupcakes, with the exception of Georgia. It’s kind of criminal that Georgia played three BCS non-conference teams, and gets sent to Shreveport! I guess that’s off subject, though!
Yeah, but I'm not saying those numbers don't count.
When you look at the base numbers it appears that Darvin got snubbed. But when you look at purely SEC #‘s Darvin is just one of many guys who put up good numbers. Someone had to be left out of the mix, and the coaches probably voted for the players who have been doing it for more than one season, who they probably gameplanned to stop and couldn’t. The SEC coaches probably voted for players who gave their own team fits, or they watched on sportscenter every week. I don’t think Darvin gave any SEC team fits this year except for Bama…And who knows maybe Saban voted for Darvin…
It is a legitimate gripe by Auburn fans, but some of you guys are acting like this was the snub of the century. I happen to think the snub to Patrick Peterson was a far bigger snub. I bet Peterson’s passes defended to total passes ratio is off the chart…Most teams didn’t throw his way.
Interesting SEC stat
Darvin had the fifth highest Yard per game versus the SEC. (74.6) Touchdowns were down but i view that like RBI in baseball very oppoutunistic stats either you can get it or not.
Lafell 59.4 per game. Take is as you may….. i would take Darvin over Lafell vs the SEC.
AUBURN is back!
Agree on the TD stat.
I think it is overrated as well.
But all WR stats (actually all football stats) are dependant on so many variables it is hard to rank them.
My favorite stat is how many catches resulted in first downs. If darvin is tops in that stat and yards, then that would be tough to ignore. I doubt the coaches go through this kind of analysis when casting a vote though.
I really think the vote went the way it did based on how much attention the coach payed to that player when they were gameplanning against that players team.
I think he broke off so many Long catches
That stat might not be that good….. Oh well nothing we can change. Better year then i expected. Raised some eyebrows and maybe won over some hearts
AUBURN is back!
exactly what I thought..
Auburn’s offense was “new” to these coaches to gameplan against.
Auburn used so many players in different positions, and roles in the course of a game. The opposing coaches had a lot to teach their defenses in just one or two weeks, that concentrating on one player was NOT an option.
"An armed man is a citizen. An unarmed man is a subject"-Thomas Jefferson
You know...
I’m going to campaign against LSU receivers from here on out. It just seems right in my view.
Your welcome
when i started the fan post. It was a knee jerk reaction to the voting. I knew Darvin had a good season but it was LSU Jonno that pushed me to search for the stats and look at it in different ways.
Thanks LSU Jonno
AUBURN is back!
I didn't know the stats before my original post either.
After looking at the stats though, the dude had a great year, and will probably make All SEC next year now that he has some street cred. Like I said before, coaches probably didn’t game plan against him this year but they probably will next year.
The thing about Adams....
…..is that he has twice the catches of any other wide receiver on the team. What we did most was look for Adams, with a dump to Mario Fannin second. There might have been 5 wide receivers in the formation, but Adams was usually going to get the first look. Teams HAD to know it by the 4th game! Adams caught 3 TDs against WVa, and they HAD to know!
……Adams was the receiver that impressed me most on A-Day, while I was sitting way back in the end zone. He made some big plays, and was running around wide open all day. No one we had out there could stay anywhere close to him in coverage.
