Talking Auburn Football and Other Stuff
It was good to see former Auburn coach Tommy Tuberville's name mentioned in connection with the Notre Dame job. On Wednesday the South Bend Tribune reported that his name had come up in discussions. Nobody really expected Tuberville to get the job, but being considered should help him with other programs...
If the non-conference results are any indication, Auburn basketball is in for a struggle this year. Phillip Marshall of Auburn Undercover noted yesterday that only three Auburn coaches have ever had back-to-back winning conference records since 1963. With the new arena set to open next season, Auburn officials will have a tough decision to make on Jeff Lebo should things go south this year. To complicate matters, it appears that Auburn and North Carolina have reached an agreement for the two schools to meet in the first game at the new arena. Lebo was the driving force in making it happen...
As War Eagle Atlanta noted on Wednesday, the Tennessee football program is in big trouble for allowing recruiting hostesses to drive as much as four hours to watch high school games that Volunteer recruits were playing in. Auburn recruit Marcus Lattimore, the talented five-star running back from Duncan, South Carolina got some ink in a New York Times story on the subject. When asked whether these girls being at his games had an influence he said, "You don't want to go to a college where they ain't pretty." No argument here...
What recession? Auburn officials promised the Outback Bowl they would bring the fans and on Thursday they delivered. In less than four days, Auburn sold its allotment of bowl tickets and have requested more. With tickets going for $70 each plus hotel, gas and food, it's apparent that Auburn people are coping just fine with this economic downturn...
This season was a frustrating one for former Auburn Heisman Trophy winner and current Samford coach Pat Sullivan. The Bulldogs struggled to a 5-6 record...
The move by Tennessee running backs coach Eddie Gran to Florida State is an interesting one. The former Auburn assistant spent one year in Knoxville before bolting to join Jimbo Fisher's staff in Tallahassee. The question is, what made him leave Lane Kiffin's after only a year? Was it the pending NCAA investigation or having to endure the immaturity of Kiffin and his unusual staff? We'll probably never know...
What's the over/under on how many years Mark Richt has left at Georgia? Next season is his best shot at getting off the hot seat. With Urban Meyer rebuilding at Florida and Kiffin struggling internally, but still recruiting strongly, Richt needs to beat both schools in 2010 or he's likely out sooner than later...
Auburn officials need to begin making serious plans for increasing the capacity of Jordan-Hare Stadium. It's been 22 years since any sizable addition. Enclosing the north end-zone and adding skyboxes is a necessity if Auburn is going to keep up with the other top programs in the SEC...
Not since Bo Jackson edged Iowa's Chuck Long for the Heisman Trophy in 1985 has a race come down to the wire like this year's award. It's still unclear who'll join sports most exclusive fraternity tomorrow night in New York. It will likely come down to how many voters held their ballots until after the conference championship games last weekend. If the majority of votes were cast prior to last Saturday, look for Texas quarterback Colt McCoy to take the prize. If voters waited until Sunday, you have to give the edge to Alabama's Mark Ingram. The wild card in all of this is Stanford's Toby Gerhart. There seemed to be a groundswell of support for him in the final weeks of the season. Being the only viable candidate west of Texas, it will be interesting to see how he figures into the balloting...
Have a great weekend and don't forget the last regular season football game tomorrow with Army taking on Navy. These days it rarely means anything to the college football standings, but it still means a lot to the country. War Eagle!

Army / Navy
Enjoyed the wrapup and the mention of the Army / Navy game. I’ve got a good friend who is a retired Navy pilot and he has helped me put this game in perspective. While the underclassmen players at most universities are trying to figure out whether they can jump early to the NFL or what to do when they finish football, after these guys Finish their senior year, they are going to be on a ship or possibly in a not-so-nice place doing things to protect us back at home. I’m going to concentrate on that and be thankful for them while I enjoy tommorrow’s game.
Your right Joe...
…and we need to keep those in arms way (and their families) in our thoughts and prayers this Christmas season. Remembering the sacrifices they are making everyday puts everything into perspective (including my following of Auburn athletics).

I really think that Gerhart pulls in the Heisman this season. He has carried the Cardinal, without him they would be a sub .500 team. If Ingram was not at Bama, Upchurch and Richardson could do the job. Colt, in my opinion, blew it with the mismanagement of the clock against Nebraska. Tebow is just there for show.
While I would like to see Jordan-Hare get an upgrade, it is going to be a hard sell for me. We only sell out about 3 games a year. The other times the corners of the upper decks are almost empty. I know that those are reserved for the visiting teams, but it looks bad in my eyes. Maybe it is like that everywhere, but I have been to a few UGA games against “crappy” teams and they are still almost full.
If you are a War Damn Eagle, you can War Damn anything.
Tickets
We’ve been virtually sold out for years. Sure there are a couple hundred tickets for non-conference games, but we do well. There is a difference in selling out and people just not coming to the game.
This year’s lack of sales was probably because of the economy and because of anti-Chizik thinking.
I'm pulling for Gerhart
The guy’s a complete beast, and I wish Northwestern could have had him.
I wish we could sell out Ryan Field on our own… I’ll take beating Auburn in the Outback Bowl as consolation.

Two things
What’s the over/under on how many years Mark Richt has left at Georgia? Next season is his best shot at getting off the hot seat.
Gosh how quickly things change in the SEC. At the beginning of the season, someone here at Track’em made a post asking for everyone to rank the SEC coaches hot seat “level”. EVERYONE had Richt as having the “coolest” seat in the conference. Now after one season most have him with the warmest seat.
Going into next season I think the top 3 warmest seats are:
1) Miles
2) Richt
3) Petrino
Coming out of next season I think the top 3 warmest seats will be:
1) Nutt (Ole Miss is going to finish last in the West next year)
2) Miles (Crowton doesn’t have a clue and doesn’t look like he’ll be fired)
3) Kiffin (They got no QB)
Auburn officials need to begin making serious plans for increasing the capacity of Jordan-Hare Stadium.
Really? Don’t you need to sell out all of your games before they’ll think about expanding? Ole Miss tickets were basically free this year, and Bammers were buying Iron Bowl tickets from the ticket office after the season had already started.
I agree we typically dont sell out but i see that changing
But when i was there 02 -07 they did increase the size of the stadium. Added 2 sections to the upper deck on each side. also renovated the interior
AUBURN is back!
How do you think Petrino may be on the hot seat?
Did you just have a hard time picking a third choice and picked a name at random? I was thinking maybe (maybe) Bobby Johnson at Vandy. He did lead them to their first bowl game since the Spanish Armada, but the program took a huge step back this season.

Before deciding to expand the stadium...
Before Auburn makes the decision to expand the stadium, they need to make sure that they have considered and addressed parking for games. Right now, with the recent construction of the arena and dorms, parking spaces have been taken up not replaced. Adding more seats means more cars. Perhaps some parking decks in spots on campus will help to alleviate this need.
And if we are comparing to the size improvements other stadiums have made, we also need to look at the ways they have or have not addressed parking. For example, Alabama fans state that they are parking further away from the stadium to come in with the additional seats (they do have a larger base city to work with compared to Auburn, but this is still an issue.)
Just to let you know
The Master plan for auburn is strictly a Car less campus. I dont see them replacing the parking at any time. The goal is to have the need for cars on the campus eliminated. We also have a lake designed in the middle of the campus…. LOL
AUBURN is back!
So...
instead of Clemson being Auburn with a lake, Auburn will be Auburn with a lake? Try and wrap your mind around that freaky shit.

clemson has a lake in the middle of campus?
This plan i saw was made in the 40-60 ish ….. where the Physics build is would be the rough location of the lake.
AUBURN is back!
I'm pretty sure it's not going to happen...
The Northcutt family in Auburn wants it in place of Beard-Eaves. That’s years down the line, but still…I don’t see it happening. Drunk fans, lake, trouble

As far as I'm concerned,
……Auburn games have ALWAYS been a “park and walk a mile or two” scenario. I enjoy the stroll most of the time. Didn’t like it so much before the West Virginia game this past year, though. Something about slogging through ankle-deep water made it less magical!
……I don’t see Mark Richt getting the axe unless they post a losing overall record. Dawg fans have been hollering for Willie Martinez’s head for a couple of years, and they got their sacrifice.
…..I don’t see Petrino on the hot seat yet, unless it’s of his own doing. Maybe he wants to jump back to the NFL! If Ryan Mallett leaves, it will be a transition year for the Razorbacks.
……Nutt does lose a ton of talent at the end of this season. Honestly, though, they might be better at QB next year. There has to be some sort of steady QB on the roster that can hand off, and make the occasional flare or ten-yard out, right? That would be an improvement over their current streaky NFL-talent guy!
…..Yes, I’m quite baffled by LSU’s offensive woes. This IS the same Crowton that was lighting up the NCAA record books ten years ago with Tim Rattay and Troy Edwards at La. Tech, right? Of course, teams didn’t rotate coverages as much in the late 1990s as they do now.
Cheaper than $70
You can do even better than $70 – I dug around and found this site and compared deals here:

I really don’t think that Auburn needs to expand the stadium. As much as having the biggest or the newest stadium in the league is a drawing point, I think filling a stadium with fans who actually want to be there is far more important. Look at Oregon. Autzen is only about 55,000ish but it is easily the loudest stadium west of Texas. I once read that when they were looking to expand, they visited a number of stadiums with huge capacities, Tennessee and Bama among others. Eventually, they settled on 10,000ish extra seats. The reasoning for not adding an extra deck and adding a total of 30-35,000 seats was to keep tickets “scarce”. That way, the stadium would always sell out, and it made you think that the tickets were a must have kinda thing, almost like you HAD to be there.
That's an awesome point. Autzen is easily the loudest stadium in the west, if not the nation
Their crowd base is incredible. If our stadium was as small as theirs we would rival them in noise…everyone knows our fans are incredibly loud, too.

Reruiting...
Look, bigger stadiums bring in more recruits…period. I’m tired of being behind Alabama in the recruiting trail. More stands in the stadium does in fact bring in the recruits.

we are only behind them in number of seats
Im sure our alumni is about the same number. Empty seats dont look good. we are 30000 shy of their stadium Big deal.

It Could
Be the fact that they have been in the SEC championship the past two years and the national championship this year. Winning solves everything.

They started beating us before that...
I’m not sure what it is exactly. But, Alabama starting beating us in recruiting after a 6-6 season. Winning helps a lot, but in this instance that doesn’t really explain things. Sorry, but the logic is unacceptable. We need to get out there and push harder and get more. This year has been great, but I want to be in the top three and no less year in year out.
They could promise early playing time

Sparkey.....
we are just now able to offer early playing time. This is our first year of being down on scholarship players. If Chizik is able to put together another top recruiting season, as this one appears to be, then we will see the dividends. But you got to give Chizik at the very least til 2011 before having too high of expectations.
I would have gone to bammer if my grades hadn't been good enough to go to AU
Don't get me wrong...
I don’t think Chizik is doing a bad job at all. I’m just saying we should not slow down at all, we should in fact push harder. We’re going great right recruiting wise it seems and I hope that it continues like that. I’m just saying we should start seeing how we should be the top recruiting school in the state is all.
Top 3 and top 10
There is very little difference in the quality of player “talentwise”. With that said. Ide like to have the Right athletes rather then the Best……
AUBURN is back!
I seriously
dont think that is due to the size of the stadium

it isn't the only factor
I’m not sure how the facilities are, but they should be looking to make them better, every single year. Wherever improvement can be made, then we make it and we should never be content. This is the attitude that will take us to the top. Enjoy success, but never for one second stop looking forward.
How much did you donate this year?

30,000?
I hope you’re not a math major. LOL just kidding. The difference between Bryant Denny and Jordan Hare is approximately 5000 seats.
I would have gone to bammer if my grades hadn't been good enough to go to AU
Even with the new addition.....
it’s not 30,000. They will be just over 100,000 when it’s finished….not 115,000.
I would have gone to bammer if my grades hadn't been good enough to go to AU
Nice Article.
A stadium upgrade would be nice. Maybe not a huge amount of more seats, but I would like to see the North end zone ‘dressed up’ a little bit. Maybe a bigger video screen or a totally unrelated pirate ship that fires cannons everytime we score (like Tampa Bay) haha. It could have tigers dressed as pirates with eagles on their shoulders instead of parrots.
I am really anxious to see where our football team goes from this season. I hope we some glimpses of the 2010 season on the first day of 2010 in the Outback Bowl. Our team should be completely healthy for the first time in awhile and I think we can really make a statement in that game.
Finally, my number one wish for Auburn is to get a big time quarterback. I like Chris Todd but he’s gone. AU is far past due an amazing quarterback. A playmaker in this position can put our offense over the top very soon. Malzahn will keep us in most games with our backs and receivers, but if we have a QB step up in ’10 we can be very very dangerous. Chizik an company need to deliver on this. Whether it be, a player we already have or going out and getting one. Auburn has to make this happen.
