Shut Up, Charles!
With respect to Scarbinsky I will cite him here, although I had already started this piece before he posted it this morning.
What the hell is Charles Barkley thinking? Normally I like him, he is great for television and it is fun to listen to him and have people know he is from
How can you fault Chizik after what he has done in
Do you think that Turner Gill would have been able to pull in the assistant coaches that Chizik did? I can answer that… No Freaking Way. Well I don’t guess I can say that… we will never know, but I cannot believe at this point in time that any Auburn Alumni or Fan can complain about Chizik. If things are not remarkably better for
What about the fact that
Let us not forget that Chizik and his staff are doing all of this while
I for one am proud of
Normally I love you Charles, but in this case you need to take your racial blinders off.

The problem that I have with Sir Charles
is that although he does occasionally offer an intelligent and unique perspective. It’s always followed shortly afterward with some kind of irratioanl or insane comment.
Charles please shut up, stick to basketball, gambling, and fornication, and let Auburn’s highly qualified coaches take care of the football program. You are becomming an embarasment to my alma mater and state.
Eh... so
Charles has never censored himself. That’s his charm and with that comes a lot of ridiculous things coming out of his mouth. It shouldn’t be any surprise by now. Hell, he’s entitled to his opinion. It’s not a big deal at all.
I agree...
It’s frustrating that an alumni is spewing comments that are not in the best interests of his alma mater. But you cannot prove the counter-factual. Just because Gene Chizik performed admirably this year, does not mean that Turner Gill would not have done better.
Charles is not alumni!
He never finished his degree.

Alumni definition
1 : a person who has attended or has graduated from a particular school, college, or university
2 : a person who is a former member, employee, contributor, or inmate
per Merriam-Webster
Anyone who attends or graduates. Don’t have to graduate to be alumni.
I only know this because I jus lost this argument with a co-worker a few weeks ago.

That is one definition out of many
Look up the definition of alumni and you get many, but yours is one of them. Anyway, my point remains the same. He did not graduate from Auburn and should not be viewed as a graduate.

Also, thesaurus.com...
Gives the word “graduate” as a synonym of the word alumni. Just saying… You can use those to argue with your co-worker.

What difference does this make?
Semantics, Charles is an Auburn supporter, played college ball here and like any college basketball player with talent, left as soon as he could for the NBA
Exactly
You can be a member of the AU alumni association without having attended AU (right?)

Turner Gill has his chance at Kansas now. I like Turner and hope he does well. It will not be a zero sum game for me. If he does well, that does not mean that Auburn made a mistake in hiring Chizik.
.
I don’t pay attention to Barkley. However, his opinion may resonate with some of our potential recruits. So we should be aware of that. The best thing we can do now is win. A lot of sins, real or imagined, are forgiven if you win.
I agree Flemico....
Charles is Charles and he is going to say what he thinks. I also don’t think he is bashing Chizik or commenting on the quality of the job that he has done as much as he is still thinking AU could have made a bigger splash with Gill’s hire…..and as far as media attention he is right. Would Gill turned out to be a better coach? We will never know because you can’t equate any future success or failure that he has at KU with what he would have or could have done at AU. They are two completely different programs with completely different surroundings and situations. Chizik has arguably been the least media grabbing HC at a powerhouse program in the country and what media he has had has been mostly because he was the most shocking hire not because of the dynamic pot stirring that other coaches (cough…Kiffen) have done. Had we hired Gill we would have had an enormous amount of media attention for hiring the up’n coming minority hire and that would have benefitted AU if for no other reason than for name recognition. Will Chizik end up being a great AU coach? Who knows, but I believe he is off to a fantastic start in that direction. Am I saying that AU made the wrong choice? That’s a loaded question. I mean if Chizik ends up being what we hope he is….you have to say no. If he ends up being an Oregeron or Zook (meaning he recruits great but can’t elevate the program otherwise) then the answer is no. To early to say but one thing I can say is that Chizik is my coach until he proves he can’t do the job and to say otherwise is crying over spilled milk.
I would have gone to bammer if my grades hadn't been good enough to go to AU
Sad in a way
How about the idea that both Gene Chizik and Turner Gill are good coaches? The only difference is that Gene was chosen and has since proven his quality as an Auburn coach and Turner had the potential to do the same (and now has, but at Kansas instead of Auburn).
Belaboring the idea that race was a factor slights both men on their ability as coaches at the D-I level. Which is more important to Charles? That a coach is good or that he is black/white?
I too wanted Turner Gill, and was aprehensive at Chizik’s hire, but damned if I can fault the guy now. I can’t really find anything wrong with any decision or action Gene has taken since last December, and his philosophy and style are everything I hoped Gill would bring to Auburn.
Great job, Coach Chizik and congratulations Coach Gill. Kansas is getting a winner.
Just like ours.
Sullivan013
he said WHAT?!... the... golf... must... be... slowing his head down.
… into some weird state of sand trapped Gill high zen. is it possible he is getting ready to tee off the same hole #1… and is confused what year it is?… maybe missed the whole 2009 AU football season altogether?…
… i am (crossing fingers) hoping that most (especially prospective recruits) are only mildly entertained by him… and won’t take anything he is saying serious. this is crazy.

I've said this before
about Barkley and I’ll say it again.
The dude never has anything positive to say about Auburn.
All the guy does is bitch, bitch, bitch. Whether it was when he was in the NBA, about his gambling, his arrest, or his “political career” the dude just pisses and moans.
The dude doesnt give a s—t about Auburn. all he cares about is CHARLES BARKLEY.
When is the last time you heard of a donation to AU from Sir Charles? Or about him visiting with the b-ball team, sponsoring a bball camp, doing anything at all?
Since he left for the NBA, the SOB has had nothing to do with the University unless it can get his name in the damn paper. I doubt he’s even watched a damn Auburn game all year.
F Charles Barkley. F him right in his stupid F-ing A.

Not to take his side
but he was on the round table with del greco this morning and said that Scarbinsky took it out of context and misquoted him on a few items, specifically the headline of the article. Also, I believe he donated $500,000 to the new Bball arena.
I don’t think there was anything racist going on during the hiring of Chizik. The problem with Turner Gill is that you would be taking a coach who had a nice year or two at Buffalo and then placing him at a high profile school at the most dominate conference in the country. That is setting him up for failure, and if he had to be fired then the same jackasses who believe the south is a racist backwards place would be calling Auburn racist for firing him. Its a lose lose, frankly.
I strongly believe the vast majority of college football fans could give two shits about the color of the skin of their coach, they just want to win. The problem is that you have so many coordinators and position coaches that are black and believe they should be given a head coaching job based on their skin color and not their accomplishments. Why should someone, black or white, be expected to jump straight from being a coordinator to over seeing a major college football program? Why cant you accept the smaller jobs and work your way up? that is why so many have failed, they bite off more than they can chew.
I think it is a totally ridiculous argument. We give you guys shit about Chizik, but frankly he did much better this year than I thought, and he has handled things very well. I don’t think Turner would have done as good a job.

How many times has the Press gotten a story correct? Ive had stories written about me on local news papers for awards and such and they basically got my name correct and that was about it.
They make things up to sell papers or exaggerate the truth
AUBURN is back!
Not surprising
And I think you are seeing more and more of that as electronic channels for receiving news quicker adn more efficiently make daily newspapers more and more archaic.

thanks bamareturns07...
My problem is K Scar’s timing of the article. we all know recruiting is heating up to a boiling point now. Scarbinski is a Alabama fan in wolf’s clothing! He’s biased, and not even close to the best writer in this state.
It’s disappointing that someone with media credentials will misuse their position for their enjoyment.
As far as comparing coaches, it was a no brainier to bring Chizik back to Auburn. He had ties to many High school coaches where Auburn recruits the hardest. Namely, Alabama, Florida, and Georgia. I frankly could give two pickled damns what color his skin is. Chizik was the best choice of the two.

I don't know about that
but I do think he is just a pompous ass and likes to stir the pot. I think he has always been irresponsible as a journalist, straggling the line between reporting facts and providing editorials. I don’t like that, and I think, as you mentioned, it can lend itself easily to misperception (hell, or correct perception) which further damages credibility of the journalist.
Basically, Scarbinsky sucks.

It's been said before ...
“Nowadays it’s OK to call anything racist in this country — even when it’s not … but, you can’t call an act of terror — ‘terrorism’ — in this country, even when it is.”
It’s the PC world we live in folks.
It’s Barkley’s world. It’s Scarb’s world. It’s the MSM’s world. It’s the Pop-culture’s world.
Live with it folks … or, beat back Political Correctness where ever it lives. Oh, my bad, that’s not PC.
