Hot Dog Time In Auburn!
Thanks to Hilary (a.k.a. HMLEE) at the SB Nation blog, The Rivalry, Esq., this year's Outback Bowl will take on more meaning for me. As the Northwestern writer for the Big Ten site, she laid down a challenge this weekend that's hard to pass up. Hilary suggested a friendly wager on the game that involves one of my very favorite things - food.
The bet is simple. The winner receives a catered meal (by mail) from a famous local establishment chosen by the loser. The dish is to be something regional in flavor and well known among Auburn and Northwestern fans. To say I'm excited is an understatement.
So what do I offer up? That's been the million dollar question this weekend. The first major hurdle is finding an appropriate dish. After that, it's finding an establishment that's set-up to ship overnight. That narrows things quite a bit. Fortunately, I've come up with the perfect solution.
Should Northwestern upset our Tigers, I'm prepared to overnight to Hilary some of Alabama's best barbeque from my favorite place, Dreamland. Now I know it started in Tuscaloosa, but it has locations all over the state, so I really don't think of it as affiliated any longer with that school up the street.
Here's what she'll receive: 1 slab of ribs, 1 lb. of pork, 1 lb. of hickory smoked sausage, 1 quart of their legendary sauce and 1 bottle of dressing. Also included are wet naps, bibs and a loaf of Sunbeam bread. To finish it off, I'll throw in a gallon of the finest lemonade in the world from Auburn's very own Toomer's Drug Store.
Does that sound good or what?
What's in it for me? Can you say world famous Chicago hot dogs? Hilary has come up with the perfect meal - hot dogs from Portillo's. Here's what I'll be receiving should Chris Todd get it done through the air and Ben Tate on the ground: 10 of Portillo's beef hot dogs with all the fixings. It includes everything you need to create an authentic Portillo's style hot dog including, 10 hot dogs in a cryovac pouch, 10 poppy seed buns, mustard, relish, 1 fresh onion, 2 red ripe tomatoes, 2 whole kosher pickles, sport peppers & Portillo's hot dog seasoning.
I can hardly wait.
After talking with Hilary Saturday night, she seems fairly confident in her Wildcat's chances and even talked a little smack. "I like Northwestern's chances in this matchup," says the NU law student. "Oh sure I was surprised when they jumped Wisconsin for the Outback, but, unlike some of my esteemed colleagues, I don't think that's nearly as much of a problem as they do.
"Had Northwestern not jumped Wisconsin and instead found themselves in the Champs Sports Bowl they would be looking to a matchup vs. Miami right now. That potential matchup scares me much more than the current one. Sorry Auburn fans, but unlike Miami, you just don't have any wins on your roster that make me quake in my boots. Miami does. Further, Northwestern and Auburn are both spread offenses, so I feel confident that Coach Fitz can get the team prepared to face the Tigers.
"Finally, it should be noted that I also write on Wisconsin and given what Northwestern did to Wisconsin's normally solid defense, I have no desire to see the Badgers up against Auburn. Maybe Miami isn't any better, but I still like their chances more. For all these reasons, Northwestern is going to trounce Auburn in the Outback bowl and I will be ringing in this new year with my very own box of Alabama treats."
You have to give Hilary credit. While somewhat delusional in her love for Northwestern, she's certainly confident. I have a feeling that Antonio Coleman, Darvin Adams, Todd and Tate will hit a little harder and run a little faster than that weak, showboating school in Miami.
Do you smell hotdogs?

You've Been Screwed
Jay, I respect the heck out of what you do here, and I certainly don’t expect Auburn to loose. But, should the unthinkable happen, you are giving away the farm, so to speak with the barbeque, in return for ten warmed over weanies and a little produce. What were you thinking man?
I don't know.
……Dreamland’s pretty good, but I’d take a good Chicago dog over BBQ! But you know what’s better in Chicago than their hot dogs? Deep dish pizza!
Jay
You are giving more than you would be getting, but the idea would be the enjoyment of that person with the taste of the south. Unfortunatley she won’t ever taste it.
Now, the pic of the hotdog looks so good. I may just drive up to Chicago this Wed. and get one. Only 2.5 hours away for me! If you’ve never had one made this way….you just havn’t lived.
I've seen good TEAMS beat teams with great individuals.
If you were at all
familiar wth the state you ould know that Portillo’s is indeed in Merriville Indiana which is just outside Gary Indiana……..all of which is considered the outskirts of Chicago….it’s all the same. It would be the same as saying" I’m going to Memphis to see Graceland" but in fact Graceland is in Whitehaven….not Memphis.
Regardless, It’s 2.5 hours away to Merriville…….
I've seen good TEAMS beat teams with great individuals.
I guess
it really doesn’t matter the point…..I do have to agree that they are AWESOME!!!
I've seen good TEAMS beat teams with great individuals.
Well, I hope...
I never have to pay. It’s hard to find an authentic Southern restaurant that mails food… I have full faith in Chizik and the boys!

He was thinking Auburn is gonna win
Which they should, as long as they don’t look past N’Western(I think CGC will keep that from happening).
Nice job, JC!
I came to take a look and see how you folks are seeing the New Year’s Day date we have and I want to compliment you (and your contributors) on your site.
Stop by and say hello at the game…I’ll be the guy in the purple shirt ;)

That's just plain wrong
While I like hotdogs as much as the next guy, Hilary ought to wager 10 dozen dogs if you are wagering that much BBQ. While I’ll eat Dreamland, I personally, I prefer Blue Moon, Bob Gibsons, Golden Rule or even my own BBQ to Dreamland. I’ve always found their ribs to be on the tough side although they taste as good as any I’ve ever had. Back to hotdogs, you can’t beat Pete’s Famous on 3rd Ave in downtown B’ham. We’ve even been known to take home a bottle of the and make our own dogs.
WDE!!!
Dreamland?
Are you serious? Dreamland is terrible/. Why not just get em some ribs from Chilli’s? You couldn’t find an AUBURN restaurant to involve in this? Byron’s? Mike & Ed’s? Mamma G’s? This is turrible.

I tried...
I couldn’t find anyone in Auburn to mail out an order. I tried everywhere. But I do have to say, Dreamland ribs are incredible!

Trade the Dogs for Some Pizza
Northwestern fan here. And I’m sorry, but I have to agree. If you’re going to get some good Chicago food, you have to go deep dish pizza. Gino’s East will send it to you with some dry ice to keep it cold. Mmmmm……
Don't get me wrong...
I looove Gino’s East. It is my favorite deep dish pizza. However, the food selection of hot dogs over deep dish was made based on two factors:
1. The mail order frozen version of Gino’s East, while okay, is not nearly as good as the fresh version.
2. The proliferation of Uno’s in the country has brought deep dish pizza to the rest of the U.S., so it isn’t as much as a novelty (even though the chain Uno’s seriously have nothing on REAL deep dish…)
I need to try some pizza....
Uno’s is hands down my favorite chain restaurant in the world. There isn’t one here, so whenever I’m somewhere where there is one, I have to partake. Obviously, I’m a little sheltered…. but are you really telling me that "real’ Chicago deep dish pizza is that much better than Uno’s. Southwest starts service here in May, and Chicago is only $99 away.
yes. it is
even the original pizzeria uno (or due, if you really want to live on the edge) is not much like the chain unos, believe it or not. they’ve got a menu with pizza, and then like 2 choices of pasta if you’re the one person in your group that didn’t want pizza that day but got outvoted.
i’m not sure if you should make a trip to chicago just for the pizza, but if you do make the trip be sure to get pizza while in town.
I ate at the Uno's...
….in Schaumberg, about 5 years ago. Amazing pizza! Then we hit Uno Grill in Orlando, and the pizza just wasn’t the same, either the crust or the cheese. Still pretty good, but no comparison. Speaking of Schaumberg, that is THE place to take kids, if that Gameworx place is still open.
……Best place I’ve ever eaten in Chicago is Spiaggia, hands down. It’s a 4-star, and will cost more than a month of food at the grocery store. The bone-marrow filet is not to be missed! We had drinks across the street at the Drake Hotel (Al Capone’s spot in the city) before dinner.
…..For me, the most amazing tourist attraction was the Museum of Science and Industry. Looking off the top of the Hancock tower was a close second. I love high places! Probably the third most fun thing was a walking tour of Kennilworth my brother took me on.
Hmm...
The Hancock is a few blocks from where I go to school…. as I am at Northwestern’s downtown campus. And Kenilworth is a few miles from the NU undergrad campus…
Aaand
the MSI (museum of science and industry) is about half a mile from where I went to undergrad. Fun times!
It really is
I mean I don’t really know why the chain version of Uno’s is not as good as the real version, but for some reason that’s the case. The Uno’s in the city (and its sister, Due) rank #3 on my list of best deep dish pizza places though. Lou Malnati’s is #2 and Gino’s East is #1. Giordano’s is not ranked because it is stuffed pizza and not deep dish, but it is also very good.
i'd like to see this... "list"
also, being from connecticut, you’re going to have to explain the difference between deep dish and stuffed pizza. is not one a subset of the other? giordano’s pizza is cooked in a “deep dish,” is it not?
It is...
But… there’s a subtle difference. Stuffed pizzas usually have a second, thin layer of dough in the middle. So like,
Deep dish (bottom to top): Crust —> cheese -→ sauce -→ toppings -→ cheese
Stuffed (bottom to top): Crust -→ cheese -→ sauce -—> toppings -→ thin dough layer -→ cheese
Gambling
especially across state lines is illegal and you should expect Pete Holiday to report it to the proper authorities immediately.

Portillo's?
Portillo’s is fine and all, but no Wiener Circle? Missed opportunity there, unless of course it’s a shipping issue.
To my knowledge
Weiners Circle doesn’t deliver. But even if they did, they’re more of a “I’m drunk and it’s 3am and I want a hot dog” place than a legit place to go when you want a hot dog for dinner…
Maybe I was drunk too much when I lived in Chicago ...
… and my perception of Wiener Circle is skewed. I remember it being much better than that.
Of course, my “go-to” place for the drunken 2 a.m. munchies was Taco-Burrito Palace #2.
Damn, I miss living in the city.
Real Chicago Pizza
Here it is, guys: http://homeruninntogo.com/
Home Run Inn is a family owned South Side of Chicago pizzeria that’s been cranking out classic pizza since the 1940’s.

Chicago Transplant
I dropped Northwestern’s journalism for Auburn’s ag school. I do miss the food, a whole whole lot…although the Mike and Ed’s pork chop sandwich is a favorite of mine now.
Deep dish pizza is lame…a well-done Southside thin crust is much much better.
Actually, my favorite pizza joint is ‘Piece’ in Wicker Park with its New Haven style pizza.
Portillo’s…good but not great.
Gold Coast Dogs, Hot Doug’s, and Johnnie’s Beef in Elmwood Park all roll the rest flat.
A funny thing I noticed in Chicago’s restaurant scene I noticed is that ‘Southern Food’ is gaining traction among the hip Union crowd…e.g. Fried Chicken nights, pulled pork sandwiches, even okra!
