Questions at Quarterback?
With recruiting over, I have to wonder if having too many QBs is a good thing or not? My first reaction is you can not ever have enough of a good thing, but with a crowded head position where does that leave the fans? Personally, I like having one guy and sticking with him until something happens. Fans in general get upset when they think that someone better is on the bench waiting it out. We all remember the non-Auburn like boos raining down on Todd last season. Hell Kodi heard them too. Let’s take a look at this issue further, shall we.
Kodi Burns, in my opinion should be the guy to lose the job. He was not very good last season, but he gave us the best chance to win each game. He has the arm and the legs to play in the spread, but his accuracy leaves something to be desired. Should last year matter at all? This is an entirely new staff, and game tapes will not do Kodi any favors I can tell you that. If Kodi is coachable, I think he has the most upside. He has played against the SEC and played in front of 90,000 folks. That is not an easy task.
Chris Todd, will have to have a miraculous recovery from shoulder problems to even compete. According to Tony Franklin, he knows the system and has the arm and decision making to run it. I along with all of the fans in Jordan-Hare last season question the arm, and we know that he is too slow to have the legs to get out of trouble.
Barrett Trotter, this kid was reportedly going to be the savior of the spread at
Neil Caudle, is well Neil Caudle. I do not think that he can stay healthy enough to even compete for the job. Maybe he could move to WR and help us out there.
Clint Mosely, this kid has redshirt written all over him. While he is phenomenal stats wise, there is some question as to the opponents that he played against. He is from a small school (2A), which is another reason why his rival and scout ranking was not very good (2 and 3 Stars). One note on his stats… a friend told me that he did not play in the fourth quarter but a handful of times all year. He was Mr. Football of
Tyrik Rollison, this kid is the question mark. I think that if any of the above kids can get it done, he redshirt and get bigger, stronger, smarter and faster. Tyrik is a great talent, but the SEC game is quicker than anything that he has faced up to this point.
I am all for getting the best players on the field, if that in turn means winning. I am not one of these guys that is willing to blow a year of eligibility just to groom a guy. If Mosely or Rollison are truly ready to compete on Saturdays then by all means keep them. But if there is any question, redshirt them and have them for four more years. Nobody wants to waste talent. We have six guys that are good enough to be on scholarship here at
My gut is telling me that Burns will be the opening day starter, and Trotter will be the back up. Kodi being the runner that he is runs the risk of getting injured and Trotter will step in ready to go.
What are your thoughts?

Neil Caudle was at one time an Elite 11 QB
Not saying he should be the starter, it just blows my mind everytime I remember that. I trust Malzahn to put the best guy in the best position to be successful. Whether that’s Kodi, Tyrik, Barrett, or hell, Sen’Derrick, the best guy needs to play, period. I hope they make a decision quickly so that we don’t get the lingering effect we had before the season last year. I believe that not settling on Todd or Burns until after the season started hurt the team alot. I remember the grumblings that the offense was divided into two camps, one that thought Todd should be the starter and one that thought Burns should be the starter. Our offense needs to be unified behind one guy, and as early as possible.

Ty
I don’t think red shirting Ty would be that great of a deal. I’ve seen lots of Texas high school football over the years and watched him every game he’s played and this kid is the best i’ve seen. He’s unbelievable and you boys got the steal of the year. He’s has the best vision, accuracy, strength and speed combination I’ve ever seen with a kid his age and position…..good luck to you Tigers.
Knock out Ty and goodluck.
Thanks sswildcat,...
for the upbeat words on Ty. Auburn is sure ready (understatement) for something great to happen at the QB spot, particularly after last season. We’re all hoping Ty turns out to be special over time for Auburn.
War Eagle!
I think we need to just waste Burns or move him.
I don’t think his problems are his talent, his problems are his mind. Apparently, the kid is just dumb and can’t learns the plays. By the time he learns the plays of the new offense, he will have one year left. I would rather let one of the freshmen play, learn and take their bumps and have 3 years of solid play left with them, especially instead of redshirting them and pushing the game experience back a year.
i tend to agree
I think Burns will lead this team to highs and lows all year if he is the starter. He had ample opportunity to “shine” or at least improve last year and didn’t do either in my opinion.
As a true sophomore with little meaningful experience.....
and next to no coaching he performed at about par for the situation. The whole team was in disarray by the 3rd game last season…..the defense which was the only unit not to completely malfunction was beat up and worn out after the 5th game last season. With coaching and a year under his belt things may be completely different. Look at the year that JPW had last season…..who would have ever thought that would happen (and don’t say you did because you would be a liar). Coaching can make all the difference, Jason Campbell and JP Wilson can attest to it.
I would have gone to bammer if my grades hadn't been good enough to go to AU
Well done!
Let’s assume all things are equal and that last year was a complete meltdown from the coaches to the scout team. Not really a stretch here. These players could sense, even if they were not absolutely sure, that something was amiss within the coaching staff. I for one find it hard to believe that anyone of us could have given our best when the assistant coaches(offense) were not buying into CTF’s game plans.
The new coaching staff has been quoted saying “all positions are open and the best player will play” With that in mind look for some real good lively spring practices and positive results.
The most important and overriding factor here is that Kodi, Neal, and Barrett will have many months of practice at real SEC speed which could and in my opinion, WILL make a huge difference
If Burns isn't the starter, he's going to transfer.
You’ve seen the things that his dad said last year when he was behind Todd, and Todd was a year older than Kodi. Just think of the outburst if an underclassman is starting ahead of Kodi.
Why Is This So Often Cited As A Positive?
He ran the spread in High School,
I hope we’re not planning on running a high school offense.
The claims that Franklin’s Gus’s offense is so simple a high schooler can run it is strike against it, not for it.
I have never heard a negative about Mahzahn's
offensive schemes and from what I have seen of it I like it. The positive is that if a kid is used to the formations and the routes as well as the reads…..then he has a head start. As far as the complexity of a scheme having bearing on its effectiveness…….thats kinda silly.
I would have gone to bammer if my grades hadn't been good enough to go to AU
Malzahn's offense is obviously going to be more complex than a high school offense
But would you rather have someone running it who has tasted a high school version of the spread or someone who ran a high school version of the power run? I’d pick the former, because he understands the concepts behind the spread, understands that it’s going to be at a higher pace, and has a head start on understanding the scheme. Obviously, he has alot more to learn, but he’s ahead of the curve.
Think of it this way. College physics is harder than high school physics. Who do you expect to get the better grade in college physics, the person who took it in high school or the person who didn’t? It’s not always going to be the person who took it in high school, but I’d say a majority of the time the student with the high school physics experience outperforms the student without it.

And Jonno you are correct.....
if Kodi can’t get the playing time now as a junior he would most likely transfer to 1-AA in the blink of an eye. But if he can’t get the playing time because he’s not the best option then so be it. With that being said, I have a hard time not seeing him being the best option at least for now….spring and/or fall camp may prove me wrong. I still say with the proper coaching he will excel.
I would have gone to bammer if my grades hadn't been good enough to go to AU
We need an intelligent QB
I dont care how far they can throw or how fast they can run. I f the ball ends up in the defenses hands on a 60 yard pass it doesnt really matter. We need some one that can make the right decisions. Granted they need to be able to throw and have the proper mechanics (y’all see that pic of Kodi throwing from behind his head?), but a QB needs brains.

I agree
For Kodi to remain the QB he will have to make some huge improvements with his decision making. He is a great athlete and that alone makes up for some of his mistakes, but many of his “best plays” where he breaks a tackle and hits a receiver or scrambles for a long run are because he was late on his read in the first place. And even with his few great plays mixed in, we still could not run the ball effectively because he was not a consistent threat to throw the ball and we faced an 8 or 9 man front on every down.
I have nothing against the kid. I really hope he can put it all together. But the decision making is just not there yet.

Burns is the man
I can think of 36 reasons I like him and 0 reasons I dont
Does this mean that...
Jason Campbell and Brandon Cox are not on your Christmas card list?

Gee....
I didn’t realize that the only reason we didn’t show up for the Iron Bowl was Kodi. He single handedly lost the game all by himself? Boy Ironbowl I sure am glad that you came on here and told us simple AU folk the reason or it might happen again. You trolling mouthbreathing fart sniffing mullet wearing mommer loving inbreeding ass clown.
I would have gone to bammer if my grades hadn't been good enough to go to AU
Sorry Todd, didn't see that you basically wrote the exact same thing as what I was going to write

Actually, that means you should have been LESS specific

I love these guys.
You guys rock, and by rock I mean that you suck at life and by guys I mean tools who only sign up at TrackEm and not at Rolltideroll as a stupid Alabama fan.
Keep it up bud and welcome to TrackEm!
Damn IRONBOWL
I hope you’re either in highschool or never passed English 101 or 102. I realize I have tons of typos and grammatical errors, but never have I mistaken something that simple on here. Good luck buddy with your future endeavors. You’ll need it.
Job should be wide open
Whole new coaching staff, new talent, old talent. Throw it wide open, like Chizik has said. Best guy runs it. Let it fall where it may. I’ll trust Gene and Gus’ judgement.
I was a Todd guy, then I was a Burns guy, but in the end I’m whoever will win for us’ guy. I am more prone to give these new guys a chance though. Maybe the political climate with the team was a cancer that poisoned Burns and Todd, or maybe they really aren’t as good as we hoped.

Todd isn't...
Burns may be good yet. He seemed to play really well in my eyes against UGA. As far as the Iron Bowl goes, he was inexperienced qb going into the most livid place Auburn will visit for at least two years. I doubt it will be that enthusiastic the next time we go up there. I really wish people would give Kodi a second chance. He did earn it by waiting on the sidelines.
Burns
Kodi has quick feet and a rocket arm he knows how to make good decisions

I sincerely hope you are joking
about burns making good decisions. Do you know how many picks he has thrown on passes that should have never ever ever been thrown? I don’t, but from what i can remember it is a crap ton.

QB
Kodi Burns is no near smart enough to play SEC football..maybe he should transfer now and make Daddy happy
Good grief, are we bored or what?
31 comments and counting on who the starting quarterback will be for a season that is 6+ months away.
The offseason sux. A-Day can’t get here soon enough…
I don't really blame...
…..the dismal Iron Bowl showing on Kodi. We came in with a particularly terrible offensive gameplan. Those damned shotgun handoffs into the short side. Linebackers in a 3-4 LOVE to flow to that stuff! Few attempts to take advantage of man coverage to the outside. No sweeps or screens to space, with our faster players (Fannin, Dunn). We DID start fumbling the ball away in the 3rd quarter. Probably wasn’t in the game plan, but who knows for sure?
…..Utah did sling that ball outside, and made Bama defend the perimeter. Then the middle opened up… We had no chance, with what we ran. We could have had Peyton Manning or Tom Brady last November, and it still wouldn’t have mattered.
