Chizik Steals Thigpen from North Carolina

Thigpen_medium

While it remains to be seen whether Gene Chizik can get it done on the field, there's no question he's determined to get it right on the recruiting trail. He continued on the theme of hiring top recruiters yesterday when he hired Tommy Thigpen away from North Carolina. The more you read about Thigpen the more you realize this is a pretty big deal.

First off, it's not every day that you hire someone away from Butch Davis' staff. What makes the hire even more compelling is that Thigpen is a former All-ACC player who suited up for the Tar Heels. Not surprisingly, he's considered to be one of the top recruiters in the South.

You have to give Chizik credit. He obviously knows that to keep his job he's going to have to compete with Alabama, Georgia and LSU on the recruiting trail. He's done his homework and has come up with a staff that should compete with anyone in the SEC.

The only question that remains is whether these guys can coach. Looking at their track records, all signs point to success on the field. Tennessee fans still gush over new Tiger assistant Trooper Taylor and many believe Phil Fulmer would still be walking the sidelines had he made Taylor offensive coordinator a few seasons back.

Chizik says he's always admired Thigpen's coaching ability. "Tommy has had a tremendous amount of success at every stop he's made as an assistant coach," Chizik said. "I've been well aware of him since his days as a standout player at North Carolina and have followed his professional career very closely. I'm extremely pleased to be adding someone with his professionalism and coaching expertise to this staff."

Why would Thigpen leave his alma mater? He says professionally it was the right thing to do. "I'm excited about the opportunity to work at a tradition-rich program like Auburn and for an outstanding coach in Gene Chizik," said Thigpen. "It was a tough decision to leave my alma mater, but this is a great step for me professionally.

"I've known Ted Roof (Auburn defensive coordinator) from his days in the ACC and played for (former UNC and current Texas head coach) Mack Brown so I'm very familiar with the outstanding coaches that are in place at Auburn. I can't wait to get started and look forward to joining the Auburn family."

While Thigpen coached linebackers at North Carolina, he'll be handling the defensive backs at Auburn. Helping him will be a familiar face. Filling out his final spot on the coaching roster, Chizik turned to Phillip Lolley, Tommy Tuberville's former director of NFL relations.

While it's been a while since Lolley walked the sidelines, he does have plenty of experience, but mostly at the high school level. The Butler, Alabama native has run three programs in the state including North Jackson High School, whom he led to the 1993 4A State Championship. During his 10 years at the school, his teams advanced to the state playoffs each year.

"I coached side-by-side with Phillip when I was defensive coordinator at Auburn and it was very evident that he's a great coach," said Chizik. "He's been successful at every level and he will also be a valuable asset because of his strong relationships with high school programs and coaches in the state of Alabama."

For Lolley's part, he says he's glad to be working again with Chizik. "It was a great experience working with Coach Chizik during his previous tenure at Auburn," Lolley said. "He had the nation's top defense in 2004 and I look forward to working with Ted Roof to help return the Auburn defense to one of the best in the country. I'm pleased to be back on the field as part of the Auburn family and am very excited to start back recruiting the great state of Alabama."

Defensive Coordinator Ted Roof will coach linebackers this season. He replaces former Auburn assistant James Willis who defected to Alabama and is now in the witness protection program. The Lolley hire is interesting. You have to think that Chizik was impressed with his work ethic on the recruiting trail. Lolley busted his tail for the program even though there were no guarantees of a job. You have to like that in a person. Now let's hope he can coach.

Give credit where credit is due...

I’ll admit, when I heard Gene Chizik was hired I wasn’t the happiest of campers. But nearly every move he has made since has been solid. CGC has assembled a GREAT coaching staff, landed a GREAT recruiting class, and has displayed tremendous work ethic. To my next point, as much as I hate to admit this, Jay Jacobs might not be as inept as we all make him out to be. Looking forward to an exciting season..

Jay Jacobs wasn't the one who hired all of the assistants

Gene Chizik did. Jay Jacobs is still the guy who looked at a coach who was 5-19 overall, and on a 10-game losing streak, and said “that’s our guy.”

But I agree, Chizik’s hires and recruiting class have given me hope. I just hope he doesn’t get in the way of the potential this staff and this team has.

Another Ace Recruiter...

Who does Mean Gene think he is, Saban? Who does Auburn think they are? Aren’t we smart enough to know that Alabama has the state and the region locked down?

Hmmm….

"Had" not "has"

There’s no doubt that Saban hit the ground running, and running hard when he came back to the SEC. Recruiting the best players he could get was his top priority and he let everyone know it.

Looks like Chizik is as serious about the job he has to do as Saban was about his 2 years ago.

Time will tell if Chizik will get his share of the best players going head-to-head with Saban.

If hard work has been a major factor in Saban’s success (and not Albert Means type incentives) … I like Chizik’s chances.

Lookin' good folks,...

here’s a look at the complete coaching staff assembled in one place on the Auburn Football Coaching Staff web page,…all in their matching “AU” shirts.

Link: http://auburntigers.cstv.com/sports/m-footbl/spec-rel/m-footbl-coaches.html

Can’t wait to see them put it all together on the field now,…coaching-wise.

Chizik has done an outstanding job putting this staff together,…now let’s see them coach and recruit for the 2010 recruiting class, as a complete unit.

On a side note,…it appears adding Thigpen to the staff in terms of recruiting, will offset the loss of James Willis as a recruiter.

Yet another solid hire....

I have to admit to this point the Chizik era has been far better than I would have ever predicted. I still say that Jay Jacobs rolled the dice on the hire and I still want his head on pike no matter what the outcome of the Chizik hire. If Chizik is as savy on game day as he is on the recruiting trail and in hiring assistants we will be in good shape….if not then at least the cupboards won’t be empty when he leaves. I am hoping he can get it done.

I would have gone to bammer if my grades hadn't been good enough to go to AU

as much as i am all about some hope and change right now

and as excited as i have been about the hires and the recruiting job, this team is still the same one that went 5-7 last year. if anything we’ve got even less talent this year and a harder schedule, so i am cooling my coach-lust for the moment and hoping that the Chizik is as good at getting the best out of his players as he is at bringing in quality assistants.

anyone planning on going to the Spring Game this year?

by suicidewatch on Feb 16, 2009 3:06 PM CST reply actions

I agree that there is a reason for a reserve of optimism.....

but, I still maintain its not due to the talent pool at AU. Our Tigers didn’t stink up the record books because of a lack of talent, no not in the least, they bombed because of a complete meltdown as a team that started with the Offensive coaches and spread throughout the rest of the team, finishing with a damn near complete decimation of the defense due to injuries and fatigue. I don’t expect that this year. AU had a similar meltdown in Pat Dyes last season……with the whole team burdened by the Ramsey debaucle and Dyes uncertain future, they proceeded to go 5-5-1. Someone help me. What did the diminutive Terry Bowden (a.k.a. Buster Brown, Tator Tot) do the following season? Now I am not suggesting that the Chizmeister is gonna go 12-0 in his first season on the Plains as the Padre Familious, but, I also know that the cupboard is anything but bare. And, as far as, all of the naysayers and the “howsyermommernem spouting bammers” let’em believe that AU is rebuilding and that Saban is the supreme being that they believe him to be…….we will see the truth this fall.

I have been saying the same thing.

I think we’ll be fine talent wise. We’ll have these guys coming back from the injuries and depth should go up for us as I’ve said before. After so many injuries, we cannot expect to be doing that well. I think we’ll be better than what most expect, yet I am keeping my goals to a low and I just want to be better than 5-7 this fall. It doesn’t seem like that’s too much to ask for right?

by Sparkey on Feb 17, 2009 9:26 AM CST up reply actions

I have said on here many times....

that anything worse than 7-5 or 8-4 will be a failure for AU and that if the coaching staff is able to implement their system quickly and efficiently that 9 or more wins is definitely possible. I am cautiously optimistic at this point and I hope that our offense can be productive. Our Defense should be stout as usual. If this holds to be true then we will surprise alot of the doubters.

Not only is this the same team that went 5-7 last year, this is also the group of seniors that are 2-1 vs Bammer. Recruiting is the life blood of any college program, “WE” should all agree on that. Pete Carroll at Southern Cal says that he “puts as much time into recruiting as he does coaching”.

I for one really like the new staff. I have a new found optimism about Auburn football.

Speaking of optimism

Not only is this the same team that went undefeated last year in the regular season, this is also the group of sophmores who completely raped the barners last year in dramatic blow-out leave a sting on your organization for decades type manner.Recruiting is the life blood of any program, so “WE have a pretty healthy circulatory system. Nick Saban at UA says "F#%$ Pete Carroll we are run this recruiting game”
I for one really like AU’s new HC. Thanks AU because of you I have found an even strong optimism about UA football.

Ah....

but even you must admit to the Tides lack of depth last season and the incredible luck that it took for injuries not to expose it. And this season while I do believe the depth issue is gone at LB it still lingers at O-line and DE. Add to that a rookie QB and I would think that it would be a small miracle to repeat that feat. As far as our situation as I have said I am cautiously optimistic….and it will depend largely on the team chemistry that AU can establish as well as Chiziks gameday ability. But, a complete meltdown withstanding, I believe that Chizik could sleep his way to 7 or 8 wins this season considering a.) the coaching staff that he has assembled. and b.) the talent that is in place at AU.

We will see in the fall.

War Damn Eagle.

That is a bold statement Todd

"Chizik could sleep his way to 7 or 8 wins this season "

Really? He has done a great job bringing inhis coasching staff and did a good job recruiting (under the circumstances), but he has yet to prove himself as an effective HC… EVER. Can he make the gameday decisions that were missing last year? We will see, but I have no doubt he’s gonna have to work to get 8 wins.

Think of it this way.....

Ron Zook was good for 7 or 8 win seasons. Curly Hallman was good for 7 or 8 win seasons. Ray Goff was good for 7or 8 win seasons. Gerry Dinardo was good for……. My statement is that, a meltdown withstanding, it doesnt take a genius to win 7 or 8 games at a good SEC program that has the talent. As far as last season goes that was a complete meltdown and those games were lost on the practice field as much as they were on saturdays. Its not really a bold statement if you think about it.

I’m not debating the “raping,” as you so eloquently put it, but if that blowout really did set our team back for decades, then how did we manage a top 15 recruiting class with a coaching change?

I did not mean set your team back for decades in that sense, come on this is the SEC. I just meant that was the biggest beat down in rivalry in decades therefore that one will sting your teams’ pride for decades (unless you guys trump that with an even bigger beat down). Also congratulations on the recruiting front, I hope you guys get the #2 class in the nation every year, if that is possible just so we match up like Godzilla and King Kong (Who won in that movie anyways) True we did dodge our depth issues last year but as much as the world of Aubbies would love to put that 100% on luck, you must consider that conditioning does play a factor in how tough your team is. So CNS is getting it done all year long prepping these guys.

But, a complete meltdown withstanding, I believe that Chizik could sleep his way to 7 or 8 wins this season considering a.) the coaching staff that he has assembled. and b.) the talent that is in place at AU.

I guess we beg to differ on opinions of B.) and without B.) being as good as you think, your A.) cannot make that much of an impact immediately, and quite frankly I think your Head A.) sucks a big one and will continue his horrible coaching record. Besides the point that without top tier talent No team sleep walks there way into 8 wins in SEC. I think your fans must be sleep walking themselves into disillusion. WAKE UP

So even though we had the talent.....

last season to be the preseason pick for winning the West, since that didn’t come to fruition and we had a dismal year, the talent we had must have evaporated into thin air. And I don’t care how good the conditioning was for Bama last season….to go through that schedule in the SEC with no players losing significant playing time due to injury is nothing short of miraculous. We saw how good Bama’s offensive line was after they lost Andre Smith in the Sugar Bowl and that is just the loss of one player (albeit a hell of a player). You can help to minimize injuries with conditioning for sure but you can’t completely do away with them without luck. We can agree to disagree I’m cool with that, but you will have to show me another dismal year for me to scream we don’t have the talent to compete in the SEC. Like I said “we will see in the fall”.

The voice of reason? is that really your screen name? Can it be that you were playing the “mean one thing but say another” game? Do really believe that drivel that spews from your keyboard? Am I going too fast for you? Should you have studied football and it’s intracasies before you tried stating your so called facts? Can it be that you are wrong? Oh wait I meant… Could it be that you are right? Or was it correct the first time? Am I going too fast for you?
