Coaching Staff
I don’t know if you have noticed or not but there is a new coaching staff at
I was one of the many folks who was not happy with Tuberville getting fired or resigning, how ever you decide to look at it. I like most of the things that he did, and I really liked how he turned our football players into great Auburn Men. It is yet to be determined on whether Coach Chizik is going to do the same thing, but so far I am impressed more and more every day.
For a program that ESPN, CBS Sportsline, and others were reporting that it was a racist program for not hiring Turner Gill, we sure have loaded up on very talented black coaches. It will not be
Taking a look at the new coaches, it seems that Chizik is allowing them to talk to reporters. That is something that the old regime would not allow. It could be because of the stupid babble that would come out of their mouths (see Tony Franklin). But Tuberville was getting very good at “phoning in” is daily conferences as well. He would tell us as fans absolutely nothing. He would talk about hunting, fishing, and anything but what was really going on at
This staff seems open to talking and letting the fan base know that settling is not an option. Listen to some of the tidbits we are getting from the staff.
Chizik said Monday the Tigers are behind recruiting for 2010 because his new staff got such a late start recruiting for 2009. “Recruiting hasn't taken a backseat to anything…We'll be catching up for awhile.” It is good news to me that he is looking at this program as a “long term” deal.
Tracy Rocker is talking about his defensive line. "Well, it's always the same stuff," Rocker said. "Weights, getting in better shape and it is just a matter of fighting through some of the nicks and bruises and teaching guys up front. When you play defensive line, you're going to get hurt and you're going to have to play hurt.” It sounds to me like Rocker is not going to stand for just being a starter last season. We did have some guys that would come off the field for a play or two when were really needed them last season. He is demanding they every one play hard all the time.
Curtis Luper was talking about recruiting and how getting a number one recruiting class in the nation was a goal of his. "If they're keeping the score, you want to win, right?" That sounds like someone I want recruiting for me. I cannot say I have ever heard a coach say that they cared about recruiting rankings before. Unless the coaches school was already number one.
Ted Roof in talking about his defensive philosophy… “In this league, you don't trick people. You have to out-hit people.” Sweet, need I say more. I am looking for big things from our defense. With a defensive minded head coach and Roof who could make
Now with a staff that seems to have the motivation skills ready to go. Lets see if they can translate that motivational speak to actual production on the field. Spring practice is to begin on March 24. Personally I cannot wait, it seems so far away still. But maybe then we can get to talk about X’s and O’s a bit. I am ready to hear from Malzahn about what is going on with the offense. Something tells me I will get very little of that, until close to the season opener.

Gag-order
Taking a look at the new coaches, it seems that Chizik is allowing them to talk to reporters. That is something that the old regime would not allow.
Too bad the old coaches’ wives did not ‘get the memo’ about the gag-order.
But then maybe Tubs’ gag-order didn’t apply to coaches’ family members calling on-the-air radio talk shows and totally making fools of themselves.
Good Point
I had forgotten about that… of course, I never listen to Finebaum. He makes me want to vomit.
If you are a War Damn Eagle, you can War Damn anything.
It seems to me that this new staff has the tools mentally to handle the press. The confidence to place themselves in the firing line that a press meeting can turn into exudes confidence in themselves and their goals.
If that one factor translates into good coaches then we are way ahead of the previous staff.
Now the question is, can all this entusiasm, and confidence be instilled in the players enough that they will buy into the program? After last year I think that the coaches have their hands full just rallying the troops if you know what I mean.
As far as CGM and being quiet on the offense, That’s the way I like it. There is probably no one person in college football that can adjust his offensive strategy to the strengths of his team. I’ll just say, there is no way Tulsa had the talent that is currently at Auburn and CGM did real well there.
Good Day and WAR EAGLE everybody
My thoughts
I think that Malzahn is mainly quiet right now due to him not really having an idea of what he will be able to do with who is in place. He sees the player on film but until you get a real time and real life assessment of the talent and their mental abilities to learn schemes, he probably doesn’t know what he will be able to do.
As far as the rest of the staff goes and their PR, I think that it will make them better candidates to move on in a few years. They are getting out there and speaking up and as long as they can handle themselves, that is certainly a step in front of an equally talented coach in line of moving forward.
I think the coaching staff.....
is looking very good and is saying all the right things. As far as Malzahns lack of comments on the offense? I would say thats a good sign.
damn Mattco you just made me delete half my post on Malzahn…..I was in process of saying the same thing about evaluation and not opening his mouth until he had something to say. C’est la vie.
I would have gone to bammer if my grades hadn't been good enough to go to AU
One problem I have with the article
For a program that ESPN, CBS Sportsline, and others were reporting that it was a racist program for not hiring Turner Gill, we sure have loaded up on very talented black coaches. It will not be Auburn’s fault should those guys not get head positions in the near future. Chizik has made them part of a great staff, that is young and very talented. Seems to me that ESPN, CBS Sportsline and others can kiss my Orange and Blue rear. It shows that they will jump on whatever story they think can make a racial concern look worse than it actually is.
First of all, of course networks are going to make a big deal out of things. That’s what they do and it’s their job to blow things out of proportion. Yes, it is unethical, but I would dare say TV networks are the most ethical egoist entities of the bunch. Auburn did get a bad rap, and I would like to know how many coaching staffs have as many black coaches on it as we do. Furthermore, I would like to know what the percentage is among SEC schools. Whether anybody wants to admit it, I’m willing to bet that next year it will make a difference in recruiting. That’s just the nature of things right now, and it seems logical to reason the African American coaches will have an easier time relating to African American players.
With that said, the issue wasn’t so much about assistant coaches as it was the HEAD COACH. Auburn was a victim of the times, though. It just so happened that it was a national story here because it was in Dixieland in Alabama. Nothing was ever said about the other coaching hires among the SEC outside of Sylvester Croom and that commentary was angled in a positive light towards Mississippi State. Which, is a bunch of garbage if you ask me. Croom didn’t get the job done and it should not matter what color he is. In fact, Croom lasted much longer simply because he was black to be truthful about the whole thing. The whole issue was about the head coach, not the assistant. Truthfully, I wouldn’t mind of these coaches being Chizik’s successor, black or white it doesn’t matter to me. Honestly, there’s something about Trooper Taylor that seems like he’s the real deal. I wouldn’t mind him being the head coach here one day.
I don't think he missed anything.....
but I don’t necessarily think there should be an emphasis placed on how many black coaches we have or don’t have…….I don’t care what color they are as long as they are winners. I also think the reason Croom was given a couple of bonus years are that MSU was way way waaaaaay down from Jackie Sherrill……and Croom had to basically clean house and start over again. He also showed progress until this past season and even then one could make the argument that the program was still headed in the right direction (but the rise of Ole Miss pushed the panic button in Starkville). Croom came into MSU at a very bad time for the program even by MSU’s standards and he did about as well as most could have in my opinion. I will withhold any evaluation on the current staffs ability to be a head coach when I actually see them coach and how they prepare for and perform on gameday.

I don't think there should be a difference either...
However, what I think and what the reality is are two completely different things. As far how our coaches could be, well CGM seems like the real deal as well and I’m not afraid of saying that. I think these guys’ previous track records already speak for themselves. Honestly, winners win and losers lose.
By the way, I somehow failed to see who our offensive line coach is. Can you guys give me info on them please?
Jeff Grimes.....
most recently of Colorado University.

Oh yeah...
I knew that. How the hell did I forget that? Oh well, it’s been a long week already and it’s only hump day.
You're tellingme
I work in TV and our station is making the switch to digital this week. You know the one that broadcasters have been jamming down your throat for the last year? Needless to say al the commercials in the world could not have properly prepared people for this.

I think what will characterize,...
the new coaching staff and ultimately Auburn’s football team going forward from now on is,…toughness, discipline, and strong fundamentals. And by toughness, I don’t just mean a defense rising to the occasion on a 3rd down every now and then or an offense playing just smash mouth run straight at you football every now and then. I mean a team as a whole coached to play tough football throughout a game,…start to finish,…every game.
And not just toughness,…but execution and strategy being the icing on the cake (on top of the toughness, discipline, and strong fundamentals) in the form of Malzahn’s offensive genius and Chizik’s and Roof’s expertise on defense. Of course, all the assistant coaches adding in on this, too.

Thats what they were hired to do.....
nothing left now but the waiting to see if they produce on the field.
I would have gone to bammer if my grades hadn't been good enough to go to AU
Amen.
I can hardly wait, too,…:-) Last season was a very bitter pill to swallow.
War Eagle!
To say the least...
I will always remember last year. In many ways, that will stick in my mind more than 2004 did. I think that we seem to be on the way up. With all of the coaching talent, I don’t see how we won’t do better, but we look really good on paper. Then again, we did look good on paper last year as well. Honestly, we look better on paper this year. But, paper doesn’t win ball games.
I will be at the A day game this year for the first time in years....
I can’t wait until august for the start of the season…..
I would have gone to bammer if my grades hadn't been good enough to go to AU
I attended last year's A day game,...
for the first time in many years, too, and will most definitely attend this year’s, also. I want to see our new coaches in action,…as soon as I can,…albeit in only a spring game setting. I bet the A day game attendance will be higher than usual,…although not a stadium-filling event.
War Eagle!
Yes,...
I witnessed two games in person last year,…LSU and Georgia,…and left each one nauseated,…although for some reason,…the Georgia game seemed a little less nauseating,…I suppose because we came fairly close to winning it.
I agree,…we look stellar on paper now, coaching-wise,…but as Todd mentioned, there is nothing left now but the waiting to see if they produce on the field. No doubt we’ll need to spruce up our inventory of players to realize the full potential of this coaching staff over time, too.
War Eagle!
I am thinking about going to see this A game...
Although, didn’t Kodi Burns look great last year and we went starting Chris Todd instead? I am really excited to see what all of this talent looks like coming together. I’d like to know what kind of chemistry the coaching staff is going to have together. Fortunately, we haven’t heard anything about people being unhappy with each other yet. Though, it’s really too soon for that to happen. The engery at the A game will show what kind of chemistry this team has the POTENTIAL to gather.
I just want to get a glimpse of the offense....
I would have gone to bammer if my grades hadn't been good enough to go to AU
I am glad to be so wrong...
Well, I thought for sure we’d struggle tonight in UGA. I’m pleasantly surprised at this solid victory. I guess the three’s were falling yet again eh??
its not over yet.....
how do you blow a freaking 29 point lead?

Bout done now

They have to learn to keep up the intensity....
when they have a big lead like that.
I would have gone to bammer if my grades hadn't been good enough to go to AU
It is not a matter of intensity...
It’s a matter of their shooting ability. Lebo’s teams are like that. Either, they are great and hitting everything, or they’re awful and they can’t buy a basket at a fruit stand. In addition, Lebo’s teams have never been able to show a consistent nature of intensity. When you give up everything in the middle because of no interrior presence, it makes it easy for anyone to come back on you once you start missing your shots.
Couple of articles about Malzahn,...
just popped up. Both are similar and revolve around a recent talk he gave at a church in Arkansas. I like the fact he wore his orange and blue tie to the event, as seen in the first article,…:-)

I hope he is able to do some good with Ziemba. He played pretty awful last year.
