Where The Recruits Come From

Uncle_sam_medium

To Be An Auburn Tiger!!!!

Ahhh! The calm before the storm--the days leading up to national signing day. As you can tell, we here at TET don't put as much emphasis on the daily recruiting scorecard, or so you might have noticed. It's not that we don't care, but this Tiger just doesn't like all the hype thrown at a bunch of fickle teenagers who haven't proven anything other than being a cog in the hype machine. They're merely seedlings at this point, which must be cultivated carefully to grow to their full potential of saplings and trees. Sure, modern recruiting leads to pseudo-glory, like the newly recognized 'recruiting national championship', but it's all flash-in-the-pan. What you're hearing is the starting pistol going off for the start of a marathon--and those are won at the end, not the beginning.  Besides, I've always said that recruiting is just like sausage and laws: you really don't want to know how it's made...

An interesting article from SI analyzes the top BCS teams from the last five years and where they get their talent. The two main criteria they examine are the percentage of in-state recruits and the percentage of recruits within 200 miles of the campus. We score 50.4% and 31.3%, respectively, while Alabama scores a whopping 70.2% and 54.2%. But these numbers are from the last 5 seasons, which incidently include four of the supposed worst in recent Alabama history. But they still land over 70% of their players from the Yellow Hammer state while we manage a scant half? Can this be right? During the Shula years, which most Bammers reminisce like Americans do the Carter presidency, they still managed to harvest almost 50% more of the domestic crop than we did. How can this be?

Here's the sad, cold truth: They've always been able to do it. Alabama has gotten the creme of the crop from the state for nearly a century. Sure, their dominance isn't anything like it was in the Bear years when Bama would sign guys just so no one else could have them, as was his modus operanti during the days of no scholarship limits. Couple that with the hard fact that if you wanted a remote chance of playing in the NFL in the days before 24/7 sports coverage, you chose a prestige name like Alabama, who had more exposure than any other southern team. Those were the days of the big-name schools, and like cotton, Alabama was king, so they generally did get the pick of the litter. I guess it could be worse. Anyone see Texas' lockdown of in-state talent in that chart?

But all this time since they hired Saban we've been hearing about how they're going to reestablish their recruiting superiority in the state. No more soup for you, Barners! Come back, ten jears!!!  News flash, Gumps: You never lost it. You just weren't able to show anything for it with your coaching. Saban may not have to be quite the rehabilitation specialist you thought you needed. Sure, it helps that he's recognized as a persistent recruiter, but all he has to do is get some average ROI from these blue-chippers for the balance sheet to get back into the black. That's something we at  Auburn know a little bit about, having done it with lower-quality investment grades for decades.

Saban is definitely pulling in more out of state recruits than probably any Tide coach in history, so I'll be curious to check those numbers again in another 3-4 years. Even I want to throw a flag on Nick's encroachment into the West Georgia/Atlanta market the past three recruiting seasons. I thought we had exclusive rights there for poaching Georgia talent. I don't think we're going to lay down for them though. In between Tuscaloosa and Athens is a nice happy medium for kids that don't like the color red. We'll take it.

I guess in the end, Bammers just needed something to rub in our face two years ago when they threw the Hail Mary that Nick caught in Miami.  They thought they were reclaiming something that they never quite relinquished. And like their estimation of national championships, the true numbers were a little off.

Yes...Annndddd.....

once again YOU FOCUS on Auburn or you would not be on this page.

The difference son is simple.....

this article was written with AU in focus and yes it is referencing or comparing our progress with Bama. But that is what we all do, you included. What makes it not only hypocritical of you, but also humorous, to say anything is that you are coming to an AU forum to get in the middle of AU faithful talking about AU football regardless of what other schools may be included in that conversation. But you are to simple and self absorbed to look at your own actions in such a manner……..perhaps you could use me, an avid poster, as an example and look and see how many times I have posted on another schools fansite. Then compare that to yourself and your constant trolling over here…..now who is obsessed with whom?

I would have gone to bammer if my grades hadn't been good enough to go to AU

Wrong again, son...

You see I am a college football fan and more particularly an SEC football fan. I view all the SBNation SEC college websites regularly. But I won’t make this about me since it is clearly not the issue. There isn’t an AU focus in this article…four of the six paragraphs are devoted to Bama.

Why is it that the FL, GA, and LSU blogs don’t write up articles that mention another team/rival 80% of the time?

You can try to spin the argument towards me all day long, but at the end of the day you have an Auburn blog that, rather than focus on Auburn potential commits and the future of the program, focuses on it’s position relative to Bama. I wish there would be a focus on the former because that is what I am truly interested in.

by brandonh on Feb 3, 2009 10:25 AM CST up reply actions

I can't believe I actually took the time to do this...

BUTTTTTT I really despise liars, especially arrogant dumb ones who don’t think you will check the facts. You Brandon, are an arrogant dumb liar. I don’t even understand why you try and act like you aren’t an obsessed little Turd fan. Its not as if your numbers aren’t legion.

Ok , so you say you are not obsessed with us but instead are just a college football fan, an SEC fan particularly, and that you “view” the whole SB Nation. Now while that technically is true, you intimate in the wording of your argument that Track’em Tigers and Auburn doesn’t hold any more interest to you than any other SEC team blog. Yet in the scores and scores of posts you have made since Jan 8th, other that a few MMA posts, not one has been on another SEC blog. Not one! For being so concerned about recruiting you didn’t want weigh in with the LSU and UT faithful during the height of recruiting season? In other words, you aren’t telling the truth…..not that I am surprised at all. Admit it, you come over here to be another annoying Rollin Turd and spout the lame Turd propaganda. Yes, you got what you wanted by annoying us, but it would be nice if you could once CONTRIBUTE to the dialogue instead of going off on pro Turd screed. Your parents must be very proud of how you turned out….liar that you are.

On what day did the Lord create Bear Bryant and couldn't he have rested on that day too?

by Col.Angus on Feb 3, 2009 1:59 PM CST up reply actions

Once again...

you sidestep the issue and revert back to me. But I will oblige: you say “not one post has been on another SEC blog” – Did I say I posted on other blogs? No, I said I read them and that they don’t focus on their rivals. Nice twist though, I’m sure you’re proud.

Look at the posters that have replied to me, they all have something concerning Bama in their signatures:
1. “I would have gone to bammer if my grades hadn’t been good enough to go to AU”
2. “Gotta Love those "classy” Tide Detergent Box Hats"
3. “On what day did the Lord create Bear Bryant and couldn’t he have rested on that day too?”

What does that tell you about yourself? Go ahead and argue the fact that I’m on an AU blog. Go ahead and argue that I’m obsessed. It doesn’t change a thing.

You guys...

…leave Brandon alone. He’s the Media Matters rep for the Crimson Tide. He monitors all Tide talk, favorable and not so favorable…

I’m thinking about hiring him on, temp-to-perm…

It's okay...

Because the state of Alabama’s coach (Nick Saban), and even Mark Richt, Urban Meyer, Les Miles, and MSU’s new coach will leave a few leftovers for Aubarn to pick up tomorrow.

Enjoy seeing Daddy Nick bring another top five class to T-Town, tomorrow! But don’t worry, you guys will always finish first in the irrelevant excuses war, caused by envy and jealousy! I’m sure your guys’ next topic (tomorrow) will be an epic novel stating sources (I-Man, Charles From Reeltown, and the mayor of Opelika) have confirmed that Nick Saban is sleeping with the kids’ moms/buying the kids ocean-front property in Delray Beach, FL/donating organs/yadda yadda yadda in order to get them to come to Alabama. Hell, if the voting goes according to plan (Bryant-Denny Expansion), I’m sure T-Town is to blame for Colonial Bank’s current predicament in your guys’ own little world of Alabama fantasy.

Will you explain...

…to me again how those Rose Bowl wins from the 1920s were national championships? I never get tired of that story.

Someone got the marshmallows to roast over the ashes that are our recruiting campaign?

by War Eagle Atlanta on Feb 3, 2009 8:51 PM CST up reply actions

Only if you explain...

why ESPN and every other major sporting news organization recognizes 12 despite your whining and complaining to the contrary.

by brandonh on Feb 3, 2009 9:09 PM CST up reply actions

ESPN does not recognize 12

Look at their most recent rankings, they only recognize AP/UPI/Coaches/BCS titles.

by jimithing78 on Feb 3, 2009 9:20 PM CST up reply actions

Most...

…simply parrot what the schools give them. Using that as evidence to bolster your case is only slightly better than what a three year old could come up with.

So now we're listening to what ESPN says?

Or just on this one thing?

I disagree...
But all this time since they hired Saban we’ve been hearing about how they’re going to reestablish their recruiting superiority in the state. No more soup for you, Barners! Come back, ten jears!!! News flash, Gumps: You never lost it.

The stats below show where the top 10 kids from Alabama went to school each year. Stats taken from Rivals.com.

2005
1. Auburn – 5
2. Alabama – 3
3. Troy, Tennessee – 1

2006
1. Auburn – 5
2. Alabama – 4
3. Louisville – 1

2007
1. Auburn, Alabama – 4
2. LSU – 2

2008
1. Alabama – 7
2. Florida – 2
3. Clemson – 1

So while Auburn was busy whooping Bama on the field, they were also, beating them or staying competitive with them on the in state recruiting trail, that is until 2008 when Saban had his first full year recruiting.

It looks like we’ll continue to have this debate every year (almost to the day) for national signing day.

by LSU Jonno on Feb 3, 2009 8:49 AM CST reply actions

The article...

I used was a broader ‘quantity’ of recruits rather than ‘quality’. We can out-recruit Bama any given year, but over time, they seem to land more of the in-state talent than we do.

by War Eagle Atlanta on Feb 3, 2009 9:23 AM CST up reply actions

Hopefully Chizik...

Can put an end to stats that look like 2008 and turn them back to the 2007 flavor.

I think he’s already proven that he can this year.

by LSU Jonno on Feb 3, 2009 5:56 PM CST up reply actions

Really

the difference is that more kids in state are brought up as Bammer fans. Traditionally that’s how it is….their parents grew up with it and now it has infested their kids. I know in my family 98% are Tide fans…..I’m the only Tiger. So given that…..you will have more kids growing up with dreams of attending Bama. Do I like it ….NO. Does it make them better….NO. Not all recruits can be the quality that attends Auburn (speaking about character) all others go to T-ville. Yes, some of the recruits we want go to Bama after we have offered…mostly because of family tradition (Heck, even a broken clock is right 2 times a day) and they get lucky. So sometimes Bama gets recruits that actually have some good character. Most of the time they prove that character most times is not a factor.

The Bend in the Road is not the End of the Road Unless You Fail to Make the Turn.

Panty Raid

Okay, I went over to the snake pit to address my critics on this thread, in a respectful way, mind you:

You guys musn’t have read the same column I wrote. I paid Alabama a compliment, both historically and in the present. You can lead a horse to water, but reading comprehension is out of the question…

So at what point is our recruiting season abject failure? If we don’t rank as highly as you, or if we don’t rank at all? What if we come in ranked in the top 20 by (gasp!) Rivals? Did we fail, or is that good for Barners?

Personally, if you guys don’t beat us by a factor of 5 (times higher), you might be the failure, to hear most of you tell it…

(Okay, I obliged you. Please no curse words so Todd has to shut the thread down like the last time I came in here…)

by War Eagle Atlanta on Feb 3, 2009 9:10 PM CST reply actions

No one said AU recruiting was a failure...

but you tried to show Bama in a negative manner by arguing that we recruited at the same level as you guys the last ten years and still got beat on the field. That’s simply not true. AU out-recruited, out-coached, and out-played Bama in the last decade mostly because of our probation and coaching changes. The two teams were not on the same level.

You claim that you paid AL a compliment by starting off the paragraph with, “Here’s the sad, cold truth.” Don’t give me that compliment BS. You know exactly what you were trying to do. You wanted to take a shot at Bama the only way you knew how: by focusing on the past.

by brandonh on Feb 3, 2009 9:18 PM CST up reply actions

I don't feel like curse words should end a post personally...

It seems like most of the people here are old enough to know what all of these words were. My only statement to Alabama is give us credit where credit is due. We went on terrible probation back in ‘93, yet the Tide didn’t win six years in a row during that. Alabama also killed Auburn. I have no excuses for that-you destroyed us. I’m just saying it goes both ways and it seems to me both of the teams like to look at things in a biased way. I guess you should expect that on sites like this one.

I think AU’s recruiting this year is great for what all went down. Last year, Auburn got toasted in recruiting. That was the worst recruiting class we had during Tubberville’s stint that I know about personally. As far as they stars, you never know who can do what really. That Anthony kid we got seems like the sleeper of the year. I seriously think he might break some records. I’m excited about him. Plus, I would like to see Pierre-Louis and what he can do healthy.
