Oku Drama

Is it just me or does David Oku seem to be on the one way road to crazy town?  This kid is supposed to be a major talent.  Some "experts" think that he could become our third string back, just by walking on campus.  I am not so sure about that, but he at least would push Eric Smith and Onterio McCalebb to the limits.

I am all for a kid taking their time to get things together, no one wants them to make a mistake and attend a school that they are not in love with.  I know that I would rather him go to Syracuse, Tennessee or Ole Miss if that is where he can get the most playing time, and where his heart truly wants to go.  I would hate for him to come to Auburn and give us a taste of the Oku experience and him leave (like Brandon Jacobs).

The latest is that he is moving to Lincoln, Nebraska… not to go to school mind you, but to be with a girl.  Don’t get me wrong, when I was in my teens, girls were my main focus as well, but I was not quite possibly the best RB in the nation.  It sounds to me like Mister Oku is not thinking clearly (most PC way to put it).  If Nebraska is where he wants to play football that is fine with me.  If he is going to Nebraska to be with a woman, that is just plain ridiculous.  What is going to happen if they break up?  Is he going to be like every other heart broken boy, and run away from the situation?  If he comes to Auburn or any of the other schools on his list, is he always going to wonder "what might have been" with the unnamed girl?  I have one word for you CRAZY… girls can sure make you do CRAZY things.

At least he has a since of humor about it, he says, "Go ahead can write a story about it. I'm not releasing any more information about that… and… They didn't buy me a house."

He seems to know that what he has done is a little nuts, and he is toying with the reporters.

Personally I think that he is just grandstanding a bit now, Terrell Prior held out last season due to his love of playing basketball.  He did not announce that he was going to Ohio State until his basketball season was over.  Oku is doing nothing right now, other than packing his belongings for Nebraska.  Maybe Auburn should back off this kid, I am not sure he is the right fit for Auburn.

I felt the same way about the waffling of Raymond Cotton, and will feel the same way with any kid who is not sure that Auburn is the place for them.  If you are an Auburn person, it is obvious.  You love it with all your heart; it is the sort of place that has the effect on you.  Most of the folks reading this know exactly what I am talking about.

I agree for the most part Zach...

Women will definitely make you think about things differently. it’s a maturity thing, I guess. Several questions arise from this whole situation.
1. Where are his parents?
2. What are they doing to make sure this kid is safe?
3. Is this really a “school” issue to help him pass the ACT to get into a major college?
4. Was the neighborhood he lived in a “trouble” spot for him and he needed to clear out his head to stay out of trouble?
5. Is he really smart enough to “play” the press and that whole game?

This young man has a real talent running a football, NO DOUBT!

It is however in his best interest to get an education to the best of his ability, for that day when football won’t pay the bills.

I hope this young man really has his head on staight, and makes sound decisions. If he chooses Auburn, then all the better for him and “us”.

There's honestly no telling...

Kids will be kids, and as we all know, at that age, some of us are/were the happiest, care-free human beings alive… others were questioning what’s the point in life. Hell, it could be a girl… these days it seems the roles have been reversed. Guys have now taken on the role of a female and females have taken on the role of a guy. No one knows what he’s going through truly, and he may be making the wrong decision, and even as an opposing fan, I do hope the kid finds what’s best for him though, because obviously something is bothering him, deep down inside.

Word on the street is.....

that this girlfriend of Oku’s is pregnant and that she was his host while on his official visit to Nebraska. This would make sense of why he just packed up and moved to Nebraska.

WOW!

People can talk about dedication all they want to, but that girl truly exemplifies what it means to “take one for the team”!

A Haiku for Oku.....

Runningback his feet so quick.

Nice to be sought after by many.

Better coochie at Auburn University.

I would have gone to bammer if my grades hadn't been good enough to go to AU

While I completely agree with everyone else's opinion...

That AU has the better poon, Oku has visited Auburn before and apparently has come to a different conclusion.

Maybe Oku isn’t impressed by quality, just by well, now we’re just getting ridiculous here.

i read the pregnancy rumor as well, but Oku denied it. apparently his parents are truckers and he’s been taking care of himself since his early teens, so i’m not sure if you can just question the kid’s maturity. regardless, if it’s hot ladies the young man is after i’d tell him that i myself have been to Lincoln, Nebraska and i’ve seen what the city has to offer. Auburn beats it hands down.

I’ve been to Lincoln for several Colorado games and I still can’t see how kids attend that school. I can see going there to play under Tom Osborn, but now I’m still clueless why some of these kids go to the schools they do.

it’s like a wasteland out there. back in my younger years when i was in a band, we went to Lincoln and Omaha a few times and i just remember thinking it was one of the most boring places i’d ever been to in my entire life…and i was born in f-ing Fort Payne, Alabama…so i know boring when i see it.

by suicidewatch on Feb 25, 2009 2:14 PM CST reply actions

Yep....

have to agree been there a few times myself and its pretty much a sterile environment. Ft. Payne at least has the Mountains and some good whitewater near by…….and the Ft. Payne girls always seemed a little less inhibited than the Gadsden girls ah but thats another story isn’t it.

I would have gone to bammer if my grades hadn't been good enough to go to AU

Note to self

Make next vacation plans in Fort Payne for “less inhibited girls”

sadly i can’t truly comment on Ft. Payne girls…i was only born there and we moved away when i was a kid. i did my growing up in Augusta.

by suicidewatch on Feb 25, 2009 2:54 PM CST up reply actions

…but i’ve spent enough summers visiting the grandparents and being bored outta my mind to know it’s not a place i would’ve been too thrilled living. that being said, the mountains and such are pretty beautiful…and it beats the hell out of flat, cold, desolate, and the vaguely apocalyptic setting of Lincoln, Nebraska. and as much as i will freely admit that Athens kicks Auburn’s ass in the college towns to live, Oku could do a lot worse than the loveliest village on the plains.

by suicidewatch on Feb 25, 2009 3:01 PM CST up reply actions

Can't speak for groing up in Ft. Payne.....

But growing up around Gadsden was ok……I moved back here from Atlanta to raise my kids. And as far as the bored thing? Nah, you would end up doing something for fun……….its always the guys from out of town that sit around convinced there is nothing to do that get bored.

I would have gone to bammer if my grades hadn't been good enough to go to AU

by Todd92 on Feb 25, 2009 4:16 PM CST up reply actions

Not only that, but Ft. Payne went wet in the past couple of years.

…..You can actually get beer at the nice Foodland Plus. Used to have to buy from bootleggers like the Mentone police chief.

…..If you ever visit an Alabama state park, visit DeSoto State Park in that area. If you’re a fan of high places, the falls will take your breath away! My brother and I both managed to survive jumping off that thing, about 30 years ago. There’s a massive boulder at the bottom to watch out for, but the pool drilled by those falls is DEEP! These days, the Park Rangers would probably arrest you for it…

And...

…..old timers up on Lookout Mountain STILL talk about how one of my dad’s distant relatives drove his Harley off the cliff on Hwy 117. Landed down the mountain in the trees, and they didn’t find him till months later, when the leaves fell.

I won't fault the man

I don’t know his situation, and if the girl is pregnant and he’s taking care of her all for the better. I do hope he goes to school, though. It could be a gateway to better things, and I doubt he’d go under the radar like Brandon Jacobs did if he goes to Nebraska. If the Cornhuskers start to really get it going, he could be one of the most important parts to the whole thing. So, he’ll be fine if he goes to that school. Wherever he goes, if he is taking care of child, then I wish him all of the best. We don’t know his situation truly, and I just hope he does well in life.

I originally waffled on Auburn...

…because of a girl, but that was before I got Auburn’s take on girls.

I'd leave the offer on the table, but I wouldn't spend a lot of time on him..

Let’s face it. The kids unstable, whether its because he’s chasing tail or just plain stupid. The odds of him ever being anything is slim.

I can only imagine the battles with Oku and AU and Bryce at LSU.

It must be nice...

…..to have enough leverage to have SEC schools saving scholarships for you. If he can survive a Chizik camp and not be a Terrell Owens-type, we’ll still take him!
