Around SBN: SB Nation MMA Rankings for August 2010

My pre-preseason rankings. Sort of...

I am bored so I decided to look around for a bit and do a pre-preseason rankings that  partially includes the potential players from the 2009 recruiting classes and the returning players for next year.

1.  Florida.  How can you bet against this team for next year?  They return most of their defense that should be pretty nasty, and they added some depth with a few from the class this year.  On offense they still have Tebow and he drives them to win.  They might be able to run the table next year and go undefeated for the season.

2.  USC.  I rank them here because I think they will start and end the season here.  They lose Sanchez at the helm but Mustain will play well.  They play in a weak conference overall, they will lose a game and finish the regular season at 3rd, win the bowl, and bitch because they were left out of the championship, it is just what they do.

3.  Texas.  I know this is starting to look an awful lot like the final rankings but can you argue it now either?  Colt McCoy returning with a ton of weapons and a defense that will play well enough.  The Red River might be a game to play for the championship game again this year.

4.  LSU.  Yep, I am going back on me saying that Alabama will win the West.  LSU looks strong and they had a very good class of kids that can help them.  I think Jefferson will be the clear cut quarterback and will have some hiccups along the road, but they can lean on a run that will win some games.  Solid team on both sides of the ball and might be the only team that will rival Florida for being top to bottom best team.

5.  Oklahoma.  Just good and they return a on of weapons.  They will keep on scoring 45 to 50 a game and lose to the first team to hold them to 20.

6.  Alabama.  I can’t believe that I just said that.  I initially thought they would be about 10 or so due to having no quarterback with experience and replacing the majority of an offensive line, but holy crap has almost every team lost a ton of players.  Alabama’s defense is going to win them games and if they can make it through the first 4 or 5 games unscathed, they might can make a run at it.  I just don’t see them having the talent in place fast enough to play against LSU next year though.  They will have a tough time in their opener against Virginia Tech, but Tech lost a lot of players too.  I think that their first loss will potentially be in week 6 at Ole Miss.

7-25.  It’s a toss up.
-Georgia could be good but they are replacing their two biggest offensive threat.
-Ohio State was terrible without Beanie Wells last year so will next year be any different.  -Can Ole Miss play that good again?
-FSU looks solid but they lost a lot of seniors this year and could go either way.
-Penn State loses almost their team and Oregon loses that many too.
-Texas Tech might lost about 35 or 40 players, seriously, look at their roster from last year, they have a ton of seniors.
-Boise State has a horrible schedule and probably will not get any respect until the end of the season.
Utah is in the boat with Boise State.

Man, next year is going to be interesting.  Outside of the top 4 or 5 teams, there are no favorites for next season.  The classes from last year will play a huge role in next season with as many seniors as most of the top teams had last year.  Unfortunately, that brings us to Auburn.

My outlook for Auburn:  Our schedule is rough, but doable.  We will find out week 3 if we are any good or not when West Virginia shows up to town.  I think that if we can fenagle our way through the season with injuries to a minimum, we can do a 9-3 season, but I don’t see us being able to win at LSU or beat Alabama next year.  I certainly think that we can be competitive against Alabama for sure, but right now they are just more talented than us and they have a better line on both sides of the ball, that in the end will lose us that game.  Looking at the schedule, I would say that if our line plays solid and we find a quarterback to play solid, not great, we could be 7-0 going to LSU.  At Tennessee and at Arkansas will will be good games but we can win them.

No matter what, if our offense shows some improvement next year I will enjoy the season much more than I did this year.  Losing is never fun, but we took it to a new level in the way we were losing last year.  But we have promise, they just have to get it together.

What the hell man?

Auburn’s going to win it all!! Yeah right!

I like Florida. I really don’t think they are beatable. Bet the fact that he’s never beaten Auburn is going to faze Meyer-Ahem-Once again I am being facetious. Man, they are loaded, so is LSU. But, I agree the Bammers may make a run of things if one of those QB’s pans out. But, if they don’t could be a season of highs and lows for them.

As far as my beloved Tigers are concerened, I think 8 wins is possible-maybe 9. I also agree that unless Alabama has tons of on the field catastrophes we’ll probably lose to ‘em. Man, I bet they’re eaten this up right now.

Anyways, I like Texas to play Florida in the BCS title game. You got to watch out for Ohio State too. They’ll be right there because the voters will make it so. And, USC-I think the culmination of the LSU and Florida success and dynasty claims will rest on whether the SEC will get a chance to play the Trojans. Would be nice…..

P.S. Dude can’t figure out how to get the PS3 online….

by ArieGold on Feb 7, 2009 6:30 PM CST reply actions

My understanding...

…..is that you just plug up an ethernet cord to your router, and you’re good to go. With an X-Box 360, it took that, and an X-Box live membership. There’s a wireless dongle you can buy for the PS-III, if you’d prefer that. You’re going to have to type in your wireless WPA key, too, on the setup screen on the console.

…..Interesting ratings, and I think insightful. It’s hard to pick against Florida, but… it’s HARD to repeat. Is the fire still there in players and coaches? Will injuries and plain old luck break for the Gators? Hard to say.

Wireless

I was tryin to do it wirelessly(if that’s a proper word). I’ll figure it out….

by ArieGold on Feb 8, 2009 10:12 AM CST up reply actions

Wirelessly...

If your going wirelessly then you have to change the setting in the PS3 main menu. Just scroll on the system settings to the internet section and find the wireless setup screen. At that point it should be pretty self-explanitory. Just make sure that you change the setting from wired to wireless WiFi. At that point it should pick up the wireless connection on its own. You DONT have to buy anything for this function. It comes already intergrated into the system. Mine works pretty good too. You can easily test the system connection there as well.

Good Luck
Look forward to Murdering you in Killzone 2 when it comes out on Feb. 26th.

I agree with your predictions mattco, looks like AU could pull off a 10 win season, beating Ohio State on ESPN in a Bowl while they are applauding Tubberville for the fine job he did at AU, and that he did not deserve to get fired( read here….resign)

I think.....

we end the year ranked around #19. I know that’s hard to say right now so I’m sticking my neck on the line with this one. Anything more would be outstanding…..but my gut says 19th.

Some surprises...

Ole Miss, Arky, Tenn, South Carolina. Arky was the youngest team in the league last year, and these others are all bound to have better years than last year. The qb play is going to be much better in the sec this year with these teams leading the charge.

Bama and UGA will probably fall some from last year and both have the potential to have very bad years with their inexperienced QB’s.

Also, watch Arkansas to be very improved next season. They improved tremendously over the course of last season.

by blizzle on Feb 9, 2009 10:33 AM CST up reply actions

I think you have the No. 1 right.....

USC won’t be in the top 5 next season. LSU should be tough but again it will depend on their QB play to make them a top 5 team. Ohio State, Texas, Oklahoma, Penn State…..would be my 2-5 with any of those teams being interchangable. I don’t see Bama with a top 10 finish because of having to replace a veteran QB and 3 of 5 on the offensive line (including Andre Smith). Bama will have to win games with Defense and will again have trouble with fast teams without a true speed rusher at either end. AU will go as our QB situation goes…..if we find one we could be in the 9 or 10 win if not 7-5 or 8-4…..

I would have gone to bammer if my grades hadn't been good enough to go to AU

by Todd92 on Feb 9, 2009 9:24 AM CST reply actions

Yeah, how can anyone pick against UF?

I kind of feel like Zoolander…Florida, their so hot right now…

I think LSU should win the west, and I think Chavis will have our D back to form next year. But I’m not picking us as a top 10 team until we beat an SEC team with a winning record. Having said that, I think we’ve got as good of a shot as Ole Miss or Bama to win the West.

by LSU Jonno on Feb 9, 2009 9:40 AM CST up reply actions

Right...

AU is almost in our position from last year. See what happens at QB. Bama will have little firepower on offense with no veteran line. It seems to open for LSU to take the west but we also have to see how the QB situation works out, although it looks to be good so far. I really hope that Chavis can do something to our offense to stop UF. I’m not sure what needs to be done, maybe move some safeties to linebacker, but it would be huge for us to beat UF. We get them at home also.

by Bob Barker on Feb 9, 2009 9:49 AM CST up reply actions

Yeah I see Bama as a Top 25 team....

and they could surprise me and end up as a top 10 team. I think replacing the center and the left side of their line will be the biggest hurdle for you this season…….if they do that they will win 9 games or better just pounding the ball with the stable of backs that they have. I see Ole Miss in the rare position of favorite for the west right now…..returning veteran (and very good) QB, O-line, running backs, recieving corps just got a lot deeper and should still have a very good defense. LSU is a close second in my mind but it will all come down to QB especially if Chavis can’t get it rolling early. I will say this Chavis’ schemes very simple and his confusion factor for opponents usually comes from stunting and changing blitz packages so I would think that he not only gets it installed but has early success. Also judging by what UF has been doing to Chavis’ defense…..I hope he has learned a new trick or two for LSU’s sake.

I would have gone to bammer if my grades hadn't been good enough to go to AU

Chavis held UF to 30 last year.

Which is all you can ask for against Florida these days.

by LSU Jonno on Feb 9, 2009 3:54 PM CST up reply actions

But, that was before they hit their post-Ole Miss stride

Whether that changes anything about that game last year or not, I don’t know. Just wanted to point it out.

I think USC will be in the top 5 next year

Mustain is a good QB, and they are the most overall talented team in the country. There’s no reason they shouldn’t be in the NC mix next year, except for when they lose to Arizona, Stanford, or Washington State.

nailed it

there’s no way that the media doesn’t have USC as preseason top 5. I wouldn’t be surprised if they get a strong push for the top spot. but like you said, another no-excuse loss will keep them from the NC, and this could be the most competition they face in a few years in an improving PAC-10

by blizzle on Feb 9, 2009 10:39 AM CST up reply actions

Florida....

I think your top 5 is pretty sensible, however I have one comment. I wonder how Florida will rebound from a national title year. There was an article a while back about how no national title team has done better than 9-3 the following year for the last several years.

Even with all of talent that UF has, there is something to be said for momentum and team chemistry. Tebow certainly helped UF seize the momentum late last season, but will he be able to do it a second time? Or in other words, is the hunger still there?

by Zandor435 on Feb 9, 2009 10:28 AM CST reply actions

Honestly.

It would take a miracle for Florida to lose more than 1 next year. Tebow is just a winner and he just drives the offense, and with a defense that returns 11 starters, they are going to be good.

by Mattco on Feb 9, 2009 6:15 PM CST up reply actions

True

Florida is the team to beat. Bama is the team to beat them. I cannot wait to to to Atlanta and watch the AU fans doing the Gator chomp after the iron bowl again because just rooting for us to lose is all they have left

but I can do all the analysis for my own team myself or with a group of dear friends at a bar…..I usually check tide sites just to confirm new stories or keep up with news….but I really do enjoy hearing what the "enemy" if you will has to say about us….It is interesting ….I cannot deny it …..maybe its right maybe its wrong maybe its trolling but I have an interest not only in why UA is so great but also what barners think about us being so great or just their inability to reason with reason
