So Close...
I will start this post out by saying that I have never watched so much NIT basketball in my 32 years of existence. I have always been in the camp that thought the NIT was stupid, because if you won it, it only showed that you were the 66th best team in the land. I was that way more than likely because if
On to the real stuff… There are much more competitive games in the NIT than the first couple of days of the NCAAs. Starting with 32 teams instead of 65 is a great thing in my opinion. There is not a 1 playing a 16. That is not ever going to happen (and yes I did watch Pitt try to blow it). Every game has been fun to watch, that Kentucky vs. Creighton game was fun. The Auburn vs. Baylor game was a battle as well. Hell,
Now on to the reason you are here today… Auburn last night played hard, and the first half had almost everything you could want in a game… a loud crowd, a technical foul, and a comeback with the Tigers raining threes. Baylor was the real deal. They can flat out play. They had the do it all kid in Dunn who shot the lights out in the first half… well before he got hurt on the layup.
In the second half, it just seemed like every time Auburn had a chance to tie or take the lead, we just could not get it done. Baylor’s size was a problem… Hargrove, Sullivan, and Waller could not drive at all. Barrett was not afraid, but the size of Baylor’s big men would cause an altered shot. It just was not to be.
You know what they say; you cannot win if you cannot hit your free throws. Auburn, as we have known all year, cannot hit free throws. I am sure that DeWayne Reed is feeling like he let the team down, but it is a team effort. No one hit their free throws last night other than Robertson. Somehow he was perfect, after being a 61% shooter over the course of the season. As a team we shot 62% and Baylor shot 76% from the stripe. That was the difference.
In the final seconds Barrett had a great look at a three, but he missed it. Personally I am glad that a senior took the shot. He was the MVP for Auburn in this game. War Damn Eagle goes out to the entire team; you guys were left for dead in January. No one thought you could do what you did. Baylor is a great team, and you can carry your heads up high knowing that you achieved more than anyone thought you could. Coach Lebo did a great job of getting you guys prepared, and it gives AU Basketball a foundation going into next season. We lose a lot of scoring power… but Sullivan, Hargrove, Waller, Reed will be back.
My hat is off to you, any Auburn team that can go 24-12, is a winner in my book.
War Damn Eagle.

You're Damn Right!
These guys really deserve a hardy WAR EAGLE! A job well done, in a season that looked bleak at one point.
A well written article as well.
WAR EAGLE!
A Very Proud Student
As a student i went to most the home games this year. I am very proud of our bball team. They showed alot of heart this season They were left for dead back in January but found a way to get back into the thick of things. I look foward to bball season next year and the future with Lebo. I think our program shows alot of good promise in the future.
Its GREAT to be an AUBURN TIGER!!!
Great year for us. Much more then expected, didn’t like a few calls at the end and the full court press was not the way to go. Baylor did what the needed to do to beat us. If we had any low post presents this team would’ve be dangerous. Lebo’s future looks good at Auburn.
Can’t wait till next year and see if we can improve.
WAR EAGLE!!
1990 National Champions- Colorado Buffalo's
1913,1957,1983,1993,2004 National Champs- Auburn Tigers
Tough loss to Baylor.....
Good season for the Men’s team and great season for the Womens team. Hopefully, whomever does the seeding and site selection for the womens bracket will see how moronic it is for a 1 or 2 seed to have to travel to the lower seeds arena…..it was the case for several of the games……pathetic planning and policy.
I would have gone to bammer if my grades hadn't been good enough to go to AU
Rumor has it...
Mike Anderson may be going to Tuscaloosa for the job at UA. If that’s the case, we’ll have a rough time of it on the hard court. I guarentee you that Anderson will get recruits wherever he goes, and he’ll win wherever he goes and won’t make excuses.
We shouldn't fear Anderson...
He’s got a big hurdle to get over before Bama hires him. I hear several on their board have no use for him. He’s an odd bird. Remember, he’s the one that refused to drive down to Auburn to interview in person. He’ll self destruct.

WAR EAGLE
I doubt there are more than a handful of teams in the major conferences that have won at least 54 games this season between their men and women. Auburn has done that this season. I’m really proud of both the Tigers and Lady Tigers and I’m pumped about next season and beyond. We have some great leadership coming back next year with Hargrove, Reed, Sullivan, and Waller for the men — Jackson, R. Hobbs, Hilliard, and Smalley for the women. With the new arena coming for the 2010-2011 season (season after next), I have a feeling recruiting is going to start going our way (and keep going our way for the women). I feel like Auburn basketball’s best days are right around the corner. WAR EAGLE!!!
What do an Auburn fan and a bammer have in common? (Neither of them ever attended that school in tuscaloosa).
War Eagle
I too have a different opinion of the NIT as well. The boys played lights out, but Baylor was really prepared.
War Damn Eagle!
Thats Good For Another Jacksonville... First Down.
I was proud of them.
…..The trailed the whole game, but never quit. Those guys BELIEVED, in HARD WORK! Late in the game, when Auburn was pressing, those guys on the Baylor team were panicked. They couldn’t get the inbounds pass! It was great! I wish I had made the trip… We got to the line with a chance to take the lead. Down two at the end, we had the best look at a 3-pointer you’d ever want.
…..In the end, it was shooting, particularly free-throws. We lost 12 games this year, and I think 9 were on free throws. Somehow, I’d like to see us improve, there. Aside of recruiting, and retaining issues, I think Jeff Lebo is one of the better basketball strategists we’ve had. He calls a great game, and if you listened to the announcers on the game, they were in awe, late. Lebo KNEW we couldn’t win a free-throw shoot-out, and got us in position to win with switching defenses. It was a masterful job.
64 vs. 32 isn't the issue, really...
There are much more competitive games in the NIT than the first couple of days of the NCAAs. Starting with 32 teams instead of 65 is a great thing in my opinion. There is not a 1 playing a 16. That is not ever going to happen (and yes I did watch Pitt try to blow it).
That’s because the 13 or higher seeds are champions of weak conferences, or the occasional non-at-large-worthy that made an unlikely run through a conference tournament (the SEC has provided these in the last two years, but it’s usually mid-level conferences like the A-10 where this happens). They’re guaranteed a spot, but not really top-64 teams. Almost every team in the NIT would be favored over almost every 13+ seed in the NCAAs.
