Let's talk football people.

Over on al.com they posted a short video stint of some interviews that included Chizik, Taylor and Todd and had some short quotes for Trotter and Burns about the quarterback race being wide open.

So I got the fever, and the only prescription is talking some football.

Let's start it up with who you guys are rooting for the starting quarterback spot, who you think will actually get it and how do you think it will play out.

I will kick it off with my opinion:

Firstly, I am rooting for Trotter.  I personally don't think that Burns has the smarts to lead an SEC team past an 8 win season and I think that Trotter has enough talent and athletic ability to lead us past that barrier.  Of course, this is all on paper and in theory, in actuality he might not be good and might never be good, but I root for him to get a chance to prove himself and that is all he can hope for.

I think that,in reality, it will be a split playing time between Trotter and Burns with Burns getting the majority of the starts.

And lastly, I think that Mosely and Rollison both get in but both get redshirted.  I think that Todd will just never be back to health and not see the field and I think they will see Caudle and wasted time and effort trying to teach a senior the system to have him leave that year.  I think they will name Burns the starter for A-Day and shortly after, they will name him the starter for the fall.  I don't think that Chizik and Malzahn will be dumb enough to drag out the quarterback battle out past the start of summer and they will have a starter named by then.

War Eagle people.

Can't even say

I think this is a mistake by Chizik

I’m not sure why’s he’s doing this, but in any event he is making this thing more secret than Project Bluebook. It seems as though this is a perfect oppurtunity to build some excitement and get the players in the spirit of playing come this fall. Plus, it gives the fans something after watching the atrocious football team last year that had an anemic offense in which one of our own beloved Auburn Sports Network guys said he had never seen the offense look this pitiful.

We have nothing to look at, and no reason to think we’ll be any better next year with no looks at the football at all outside of the A game. Tubberville kept everything underwraps last year, and look at how that turned out. More than anything else, more than x’s and o’s, talent is what matters on the football field. I’m wondering what Chizik has to hide? Honestly, the fans need a boost right now. We could certainly look more forward with the new team showing us a few new looks.

I agree with you

But, in Chizik’s defense, he wants the players to be able to focus for now. I don’t think he will keep the practices under wrap for the entire summer, though I could see it for the beginning to the middle though. They have a lot to take in right now and they don’t need people out there harassing them right now.

Burns said in one of his statements that he has been studying since Malzahn was hired so that might be a good sign that the players are owning up to the fact that they never learned the previous system for crap.

Actually Tuberville didn't close practice.....

until after the fight broke out in fall practice, and that was mainly due to the fartbaums of the world blowing it out of proportion. I don’t mind the closed practices, granted it is testing my patience for any news, but we will get to see what they want us to see during A-day. What the fans need right now is a coaching staff that is doing what is necessary to win in the fall…..and unfortunately that doesn’t include feeding the faithful news everyday.

QB? Not really rooting for one over the other but I do fee that Burns will be the man come late August. I expect his experience and atheletic ability to make the difference along with Malzahns coaching. If Trotter or Caudle end up as the starter……well great what ever gets the win. I do agree with one assessment though……Moseley and Rollison both redshirt.

Who do I want to win the QB race?

Whoever plays the best and gives our team the best chance to win. I don’t care if it’s Burns, Todd, Caudle, hell, we could find another year of eligibility for Daniel Cobb, I don’t care. I just want us to put the best players on the team on the field. Period.

If that's the case,

Then it’s obviously not Todd as he proved totally inept all season long. Furthermore, I cannot believe we do not have anybody better out there than damn Daniel Cobb. Ugh, he’s awful.

Why do folks say Burns isn't smart?

Just curious if there is any sort of proof to the repeated opinion that Burns isn’t “smart enough to learn the plays”. Why is it that when Burns made poor decisions on the field, it was because he was too dumb to learn the plays, but when Todd made poor decisions (and he made tons despite being in Franklin’s system for years) it was somehow due to his physical limitations. I’m not trying to start a race thing here, but it sure stinks of subtle racism. Also, didn’t Burns have a pretty good GPA coming out of HS?
That aside, I’m pulling for Kodi. His OT TD run in the Peach Bowl and his TD run against UF in 2007… in Gainesville… as a true Freshman proved to me that he’s a fierce competitor. That’s who I want leading my team. Plus, even if it’s true that his elevator doesn’t go all the way to the top, Vince Young proved that an athletic QB can win an MNC despite being functionally retarded (see his Wonderlic score for proof of his lack of intelligence). So, maybe athleticism counts more than intelligence in CFB.

by TexasAUtiger on Mar 25, 2009 4:30 PM CDT reply actions

I don't adhere to the subtle racism that you are referring to.....

I do however think that everyones expectations of Burn’s were set a little too high early on. When Cox struggled early in 2007, Burns was the hero in waiting….everyone was so sure that Cox couldn’t do it and the offensive struggles were his fault and Burns was the answer. Tuberville threw away Burns redshirt for the MSU game and the results were less than desired……for the UF game the O-line was rearranged and a couple of freshman moved into the lineup. All of the sudden the running game opens up and Cox looks like the QB everyone expected making good use of the play action with the occasional down the field throw. The rumors are just that rumors….who knows if he is having trouble with the playbook or not? I for one think that he is capable of doing it given the right players around him and plays to draw from. It wouldn’t matter if Todds decision making ability was good bad or in between, because he was lame and could not make the throws. I have maintained in the past that had Franklin been willing to coach up Burns and build him slowly that both Franklin and Tuberville would still be employed and I still feel that way. It has less to do with racism and more to do with the QB being responsible for the production of the offense (whether his fault or not he is usually going to get shouldered with the blame). Again I think Kodi can and I am predicting he will do it…..but if he can’t I’m for whoever can.

Jason Cambell

Not saying Kodi is Jason by any means but remember how bad Jason Cambell was until his senior year? Lets give Burns one more shot from a fans point of view.

Enough of this BS!!

WE need to stand behind every single player wearing the Orange and Blue, whether they make mistakes, or can’t read and write as well as the Engineer students. Any more of this running down players is a completely distasteful and crude endeavor. I mean who the hell are WE, Alabama?!?

I love talking Auburn football. I love seeing Auburn take the field. I love winning as much as anyone of you. WE must stop running down OUR players and start respecting them. Auburn has a great staff in place right now IMHO.
trust them. Let them make the hard decisions and support those decisions, win or lose. WE can discuss all aspects of the coaching decisions and play calling, and schemes that they install. But PLEASE stop running down the Auburn players.

I certainly don't...

…..have a clue who will win out, at this point. Last fall, I felt like Chris Todd was coming along nicely, as a rookie QB learning SEC defensive speed. It seemed like he had a good feel for where the ball should go, a fair amount of the time. In the end, though, he couldn’t get it there, due to his hurt wing. Throw in some god-awful rookie throws, and the boo-birds were out. If Todd’s healthy, I think he’s got a good chance, this year. He’s a vet. He’s played this game, and knows what’s going on!

…..Kodi Burns has been a victim of coaching. As a freshman, he was basically asked to run a shotgun-wildcat formation with about 3 plays. Then Franklin more or less abandoned him. He hasn’t been taught to set his feet properly. If Malzhan can get the mechanical problems fixed, Kodi has the most upside and talent of all of our returnees.

…..Neil Caudle was a STUD, in high school. Cannon-arm, quick feet, great instincts. He got torn up early in his senior year, and has been continuously hurt for most of his career at Auburn. I think he could be a factor, and do well in Malzhan’s offense, but I’ll be on pins and needles, given his durability history. Insiders like Phillip Marshall believe Caudle will make a good run at it, this spring.

……Trotter is a raw rookie. I think the only way he is a major factor is if Malzhan is so disgusted with the other candidates that he’s willing to go with a redshirt freshman starter. Trotter is the FAIL candidate, FAIL on coaching the others up. Trotter may eventually be great, but few guys step up and play at an SEC level as a redshirt freshman. If Trotter’s the man, then he’s a compromise candidate.

Very good point on Burns, what fans have perceived as Kodi Burns’ lack of mental capacity has largely been attributed to him being handicapped by his coordinators. People argue that he didn’t run the offense well enough last year, but hell no one in the stadium knew how to run it.

Personally,

I think it’s going to be Kodi Burns. I can’t see it going in a different direction. There is a possibility of injury, though damn if we didn’t have injury bug like all hell last year. It was insane how many people just went down, and that started a good while before the season even surfaced its head. At any rate, I think that Burns has an excellent shot and he’s paid his dues with some rancid coaching on him. Malzhan can fix some things this year with Kodi, maybe not everything, but certainly get some of the mechanics better like footwork like Acid Reign mentioned.

by Sparkey on Mar 25, 2009 8:46 PM CDT reply actions

Hmmmmmm

Of course, I am going to share my opinion. So, without further ado….

I think that Kodi has the best chance. He’s more experienced than the others(Not saying much, but true) and he’s as athletic as they get. Personally, I think he stinks. That, my friends, is a story for another day.

Todd’s arm is going to keep him from starting. Many of you booed him when he was on the field. It never really made sense to me. He was 5-1 as a starter. So, the masses cried for Burns and Tubs obliged only to get fired for giving most of you what you wanted. But, I digress….

I hate that Neil Caudle will never start. I think that he was a wasted talent. Almost criminal having him on the sidelines and not using him. But, is alter-ego Mr. Glass kept him sidelined and rightfully so(If I need elaborate on the nickname…..just disregard)

Barret Trotter is young, athletic, and eager. I’m basing this on what other people say. But, I say that given last year’s performance by the incumbent, he should have a fairly, good shot at the job.

Take it for what it’s worth…..

Out of curiosity...

You didn’t boo Burns I take it and scream for Todd to go back in? I won’t boo a player at a game, it’s in totally bad form, but I certainly think Todd was not the best choice last year. His arm went to mush before the season was over. He couldn’t throw the ball as hard as many high school quarterbacks in Alabama. It simply was sad to watch and had he stayed in, he may have done severe damage that would make his quality of living much lower in later years.

And, you have the gall to blame Burns coming in as Tubberville being fired? Are you serious? I remember you calling me an idiot and I’ve never been much of one to forget things. With that said, I realize why you think I’m an idiot. You and I totally disagree on this quarterback situation.

Booing

I boo’d the coaches for allow Chris Todd to play QB when his shoulder didnt allow him to make a 20+ yard pass. Chris Todd must have talent because Mike Leach recruited him to run his offense, and that is a true offensive mastermind.

Booing your own team regardless of whether it is directed at the coaches or the students.....

is classless and does not belong at Auburn University. Period.

I have a slight preference for Kodi Burns

Although I want what’s truly best for the team, I must admit that I’ve got a slight preference for Kodi Burns. I met the guy totally by accident the season before last after a ballgame. He struck me as being fairly intelligent and this guy is a class act. He was very courteous and even took the time to sign my daughter’s hat and pose for a picture with my daughter and her friend. He also continiously addressed me as “sir” during our conversation. Based on the several minutes that I spend with the guy, I think that he would be a great leader on and off of the field. I think that he has probably been through much of what Jason Campbell experienced as far as instability with position coaches.

As much as I liked Tommy Tuberville, I must say that even though his staff was really good at evaluating talent when it came to recruiting, they somehow seemed to find a way miss utilizing that same talent at times after it was on campus, and it ended up resulting in some very disappointing losses.

Prediction: The SEC West will be the most competitive division in all of college football next year.

I think if I had to, I could make legitimate arguments for Bama, Auburn, LSU, Ole Miss, and Arky to compete for a trip to Atlanta. And on the flip side, Ms St. seems to be the only team that I’d be willing to bet money on to finish in the bottom half of the division.

After this year, Rollison is the guy, and he’s going to tear it up. Holy crap, his video’s are impressive. It’s scary to think about him being coached by Malzhan.

Kodi Burns

If he improves his throwing I’m behind him all the way. I have confidence in his ability to call plays and run the offense. His execution inside the pocket worries me. I know we can’t have accuracy and speed all in one, but with good passing and his outstanding scrambling ability he would give us the best chance hands down.
