Big Trouble Looms In Tuscaloosa

Mal_moore_medium
Could yesterday's news ultimately lead to more sanctions for Moore and Bama?

It's no secret that we give Auburn Athletic Director Jay Jacobs hell around here from time-to-time. Judging from the reaction he received in December following the hiring of Gene Chizik as football coach, I thought it would probably be a good idea if he got around the clock security. And no, I'm not kidding. I really feared for the guy's safety. Even today, there are many who would prefer that he exit stage left.

With all of that said, thank God we don't have Alabama Athletic Director Mal Moore running the show in Auburn. If you live in the state of Alabama, you undoubtedly heard the breaking news yesterday of the NCAA knocking on the door again in Tuscaloosa. Instead of George Wallace standing in the school house door, it's again Moore standing there trying to explain away another possible major NCAA infraction.

This latest scandal involving textbooks dates back to 2007 and revolves around players improperly receiving textbooks and other supplies (See the post below for the story). Initially, this infraction was thought to be minor. Five players were suspended for four games during the 2007 season. Conveniently, all five players were later declared eligible for the Auburn game and the Independence Bowl. The violations were uncovered after an Alabama Supply Store employee noticed that one athlete had more than $1,600 in charges for the fall semester of 2007.

Case closed? Not so fast my friend.

Yesterday it was revealed that Alabama admitted in its response to the NCAA's notice of allegations that infractions occurred in several sports and that it didn't adequately monitor its distribution of textbooks to athletes. According to NBC Sports, "The NCAA letter, dated May 19, 2008, said the allegations against Alabama were potentially major. They included allowing athletes to improperly receive textbooks and other supplies, failure to monitor textbook distribution and to provide adequate education on the rules to athletes and employees at the university bookstore."

The infractions took place beginning in the 2005 school year and ran through 2007. Why is this important? Alabama was placed on probation on February 1, 2002, which means the school could be punished as a "repeat offender" because the violations occurred within five years of the last probation. Punishment includes loss of scholarships, bowl appearances, television appearances and even possibly the dreaded death penalty.

Now realistically, Alabama is not getting hit with the death penalty. It's just not going to happen. But admitting to not adequately monitoring parts of its program is potentially big stuff. It's not out of the realm of possibility that they could receive sanctions equal to what was handed down seven years ago.

Should that happen, you can be certain that Nick Saban will hit the road. In case you haven't noticed, it's all about Nick. Now there's no indication that Saban is being implicated in any of these admissions of guilt by the Alabama Athletic Department.

The one common denominator in all of this is Moore. He's the bridge that links the two violations together. Don't get me wrong, I'm not suggesting he knew about it while it was happening, but as head of the department it ultimately falls on him. Somebody was not doing their job - again. Don't be surprised to see Moore ultimately pay the price. At the same time keep an eye on Saban; he'll be doing his best Baltimore Colts impression, escaping town in the middle of the night.

It's still great to be an Auburn Tiger.

Always to Conquer, NEVER to yield!!!!!

Damn! I forgot to put in my prescription Auburn tinted contacts while reading my favorite blog this great morning so I don’t know what the hell you just typed. Anyways I’m sure it was great and made me proud to be an Auburn tiger!

What was the Auburn (AL) response to Alabama’s textbook troubles?

An orgasm.

At least if you judge by Auburn (AL) blogs. The delusional and wishful thinking ranged from "serious scholarship losses are coming to Tuscaloosa" to the always faithful, "Saban is going to bolt!" (You can see both typified at Track ‘Em Tigers)

Auburn fans are in the throes of passion as Alabama fans are in the throes of the NCAA.

None of those scenarios seem to be even a remote possibility. But it won’t stop Auburn fans’ masturbatory fantasies—if you can’t beat Saban in recruiting or deal with a 36-0 thumping, you resort to fantasy.

Alabama fans are familiar with fantasy. Many Crimson Tide fans nursed dreams Mike Shula would be successful. He wasn’t.

Auburn fans are now getting familiar with fantasy. First, it was the spread will save us! Second, Tuberville and his assistants are at fault, a new coach will save us. Third, Gene Chizik doesn’t suck! Fourth, the spread of Malzahn will save us! Fifth, Saban is going to leave and that will save us!

Auburn (AL) is now as impotent as Alabama was under Mike Shula. It is both sad and hilarious. Sad because so many of the problems are self-inflicted. Tuberville scrapped his offense in panic at Nick Saban’s recruiting. Auburn fired Tuberville in a panic and hired a 5-19 failure because of Nick Saban. It is hilarious because Auburn’s only hope to right the ship is for outside forces to hinder Nick Saban.

Keep wishing and dreaming and hoping because we all know Alabama’s entire probationary process (including the changing of a head coach every 2-3 years) saved Tuberville’s career, and the stronger Alabama got in the aftermath, the worse off his teams got — just as they were prior to Alabama’s downfall.

Besides, this scandal PALES IN COMPARISON to handing out free class credits to your illiterate, backwoods, trailer park trash students…

If you really want to know the truth......

we just think it is damned funny. And at the same time I personally think it sucks because it gives the SEC another blackeye but you wouldn’t understand that because you like the bulk of the Bama nation are way to preoccupied with looking at your own reflection. Bama fans don’t seem to think that the allegations are serious enough to warrant concern and yet the very mention of “failure to moniter” and “repeat offender” should be enough to give them great concern for their atheletic department. But no they would rather come to Trackemtigers and give some idiotic rant berating Tiger fans……basically tator tot you are an assinine silly piece of poop who can only make himself feel better by coming over here spew your senseless rhetoric. You ignorant fart.

Sucks to be us huh skip? We will see who it sucks to be next season when this whole ordeal blows over and we blow you out again. We are going to be rewriting the history books on this rivalry for the next decade. The iron bowl has officially lost its competiveness guys. I predict blow out after blow out. If I was an Auburn fan I would be praying that UA gets probation so they have a chance at recruiting instate again. Nick Saban is not going anywhere. I dont care if Mal Moore does get fired if he cant pull us a good basketball coach and keep our noses clean than he can hit the road. This thing has been blown out of proportion. Meanwhile USC can get away with anything. This is a bunch of garbage that will amount to nothing……………………………………hopefully =)

"The iron bowl has officially lost its competitiveness"

Actually, it’s regained its competitiveness. For six years it wasn’t competitive. If Alabama wins the next 5 years in a row, then you can talk about it “losing its competitiveness” to Alabama. Right now, Alabama thumped us and last year’s game wasn’t competitive. But the rivalry is still strong my friend. If it wasn’t, then why would so many people have shown up to see the ODK trophy handed over to Alabama and our SGA president sing? It shouldn’t have been that big of a deal for y’all…

Agreed.

Bama wins one iron bowl after losing 6 in a row and now they think they are king kong or something. One thing to remember about the ‘08 Iron Bowl was that Bama’a best team this decade beat Auburn’s worst team this decade. And what else did they win? Nothing.

Somebody tell me...

What this violation is about. Some clerk sees charges of $1600 for a player. Was the player paid that amount of money as reimbursement for the books (probably a ficticious invoice) or did the player receive that amount of books, then possibly sold them for some cash? How did the players benefit?

by War Eagle Atlanta on Mar 6, 2009 10:12 AM CST reply actions   0 recs

They say they charged the books to their scholarship account.

Then they “gave” the books away and that none of the players sold them for profit. I have a hard time believing those guys would risk their scholarships and not make any money off of it.

Mal Moore's goose is cooked.....

he will not survive another blackeye under his watch no matter what the outcome of the latest fiasco. Later Mal here’s a nice watch for your “resignation”. Bama will lose some scholarships over this in several sports……not just football. I agree that the Death Penalty won’t be implemented to Bama unless they can find pay stubs for the players salaries (not saying there are any just thats what it would take for the death penalty). If Bama gets hammered Sabans gone in 24 months or less……..if they get the slap on the wrist (somebody got paid off) Saban stays another 3 or so years as expected.

As an Alabama fan I have to respectfully disagree on the Jacobs thing. It may be too early to judge Chizik and ya’ll may end up backing him one hundred percent but you have to admit that Jay looked like he was trying to help us out with that hire.

Believe it or not.....

the hiring of Chizik is only a portion of why Jay Jacobs should be run out of town on a rail. The botching of the dealings with Muchamp, Tuberville, and Willis are also parts of the reason…..and then you can add the “lapdog for Lowder” title that is his main job description to finish off the major reasons. Add all of that up and you have a prescription for Tar and Feathers.

He is, I believe,.....

referring to the hiring of Chizik. Which at this point we can only hope and pray that he has underachieved to this point in his career as a Head Coach. Jay Jacobs was not AD for Tubervilles hiring. Don’t get me wrong…..at this point I am fully in support of Coach Chizik, I like the staff that he has put together, and I believe that he has only made two mistakes (IMHO) in his short time at AU and its probable that those will not cost AU any negative effect. So I am optimistic that he will do well at AU.

he’s only done one thing right the whole time he’s been in the position and he managed to make that cost about one million a year more than it had to. As far as Saban goes, he has already shown his job hopping nature always looking for the next best thing and if you don’t think he would abandon Bama in the middle of the night the way he did Michigan State, LSU, and the Dolphins then you are delusional. Ridiculous conspiracy theories on how your coach will quit?

Hmm, let’s see…

Michigan State 1995-1999, quit to go to LSU
LSU 2000-2004, quit to go to Miami
Miami 2005-2006, quit to go to Alabama

That’s not a conspiracy theory, that’s history. Not trying to say he’s definitely going to leave Alabama at a certain point, but you can’t be totally confident that he’ll be there longer than 2011, because he’s never been anywhere longer than five years.

“It’s still great to be an Auburn Tiger.”

It certainly didn’t seem to be the case last season.

And I will bet anyone any amount of money that nothing significant will take place because of these charges. They may be classified as “Major”, but the bottom line is that Alabama has taken the necessary steps to right the wrongs and make sure that it doesn’t happen again.

To say the NCAA is biased against some schools is 100% spot on. Worse yet if you are in the SEC.

I have to agree with Bammer...

…..On the FSU biz. As long as they stay clean for 5 years, the penalties are of minimal impact. And you’d think that academic fraud would be the worst sort of infraction. Of course, they didn’t do much to UT (nothing?) on the Linda Benzel Myers revelations.

……My guess is that Alabama gets a slight scholarship reduction out of it. Unless it’s shown that Mal Moore deliberately set it up so that textbook fraud could happen, I think he gets a pass.

Yeah

I don’t see how you could blame Mal for this. This is just a bunch of kids wanting to make money. Was it wrong? Yep. They were punished and that should be the end of this. There is no evidence of a cover-up, any statement otherwise is complete speculation.

Now if news comes out that there was some attempt to cover up this then Mal should be tarred and feathered…all i know is that the NCAA has a bug up their ass about Alabama and the SEC. IF the double standard isn’t fixed soon i say we revolt…

No doubt that the kids are ultimately to blame.....

and yet its still on Mal Moores watch and someone will have to take the fall. And be honest the majority of Bama Alumni want him gone anyway. As far as the revolt thing…..not gonna happen. The problem is the collective amount of the text book scandal makes it a major infraction along with the longevity of the scam. Failure to moniter a component of the scholarship process for that long is also a knock on Moores management. I truly don’t want to see Bama get put on probation…….its bad for the conference and the SEC already has enough blackeyes. I don’t personally see the NCAA letting Bama off Scott-free on this one but I would hope that the worst that comes out of it is a few scholarships spread throughout the AD and no post season ban and I will be surprised if the repeat offender window is not extended for a couple more years.
