Around SBN: Terry Collins, David Wright, And The Mets/Brewers Kerfuffle

Thank You, and a Rant

I would personally like to think Coach Fortner and Coach Lebo for getting me through the Auburn Football Dead Period.  This past couple of months has been big fun.  I am looking forward to another few weeks of fun.

It has been pure joy following the women’s team and how well they have played all year.  I do hate that they lost to Vandy (again), this time in the SEC Tourney.  I was looking forward to Auburn as a number one seed in the Tournament.  I guess I will have to settle for the two seed.

The men have been fun to follow over the last month or so.  I will happily admit that I have never been the best Auburn Fan when it comes to AU Basketball.  While I was a student, I did not miss a home game.  But when life gets in the way and the program is down, like it has been for so long… it is just hard.  I try to watch when they are on TV even when I know they are going to lose, that has to count for something.  Auburn has been so much fun lately.  They play with such heart… they are not the most talented bunch… but they play together.  They play for their coach and their school.  It is great to see.

Now to the complaining, you knew that it was coming.  I am a complainer.  Why in the world would Auburn University talk about Beard Eaves being close to sold out for the LSU game?  There were tons of seats remaining.  I live in Atlanta, a fairly close drive to Auburn (even in this economy).  I have no issue making the trip seven times a year to watch the football team, why not make the trip for the basketball showdown vs. LSU?  Well after some research, I read that there were only about 1000 tickets left and they were going fast (this was on Wednesday).  I passed on the trip, due to the fan support that had already been shown.  Yet as I watched every second of the game on TV… it seemed the place was about half full.  I was very disappointed in myself for believing the media, and disappointed in Auburn for allowing me to fall into that media trap.  While it was quite loud at times, it should have been deafening.

I have been there when Beard Eaves was sold out for a Kentucky game in 1995 or 1996.  It was loud, and the fans carried our Tigers at times.  This year’s team deserved a great turnout for Senior Day, and while it was the best turnout of the season… it should have at least had two more people there.  I should have been there.

Next Complaint… if I hear another ESPN or CBS commentator say that Auburn is not on the bubble I might vomit.  Not saying that we are questionable is one thing, but saying that we are not even on the bubble is another.   Most bracketologist have South Carolina and/or Florida in.  I personally think that the matchup with Florida in the second round of the SEC will be the play in game.  If the Tigers win, we should be in.  No denying it.  If we lose Florida will get the nod over us.  The Gamecocks got killed by Tennessee on Wednesday Night, and Tennessee got beat by Bama on Saturday.  USC has a strength of schedule that is worse then ours as well as a worse record against RPI top 50.  I know, I know… Auburn’s RPI is bad.  Yes, but it is getting better.  Northern Iowa (whom we lost to) is in the Dance after winning their conference tourney.  Dayton is more than likely in as well (we lost to them too).  Our win against Virginia is looking better as well.  They finished the regular season strong in the ACC.  Do we deserve it over a 26 win Creighton Team or a 25 win Siena?  Man that is a hard sell, but we at least deserve a mention.

You know what I think?  The SEC Tournament starts in earnest on Thursday… Auburn should win the Tourney and tell the commentators to “Shut the Hell Up!!”

Just 9 more wins baby!!!!!!

Since we are dreaming, we might as well hope for a 9 game win streak! The best way to shut up nay sayers is with positive action(wins). I for one think that anything is possible.

But let’s be realistic here a moment. Just 45 days ago most people, AU fans included, were wanting Coach Lebo’s head on a block. All AU round ball fans would have been happy with a trip to the NIT after what this team has been through. Still, it’s nice to dream.

sadly we can all vomit as much as we want...

…but Auburn ain’t gettin’ in as an At Large. no how no way. but i don’t think it matters. Auburn is better equiped than anybody to go down to Tampa and take care of business. they are the hottest team in the weakest conference in the nation. 3 wins isn’t unrealistic at all. and who knows, maybe if they can JUST GET to the finals the Bubble gods will smile down on our Scrappy Tigers and gift them a 13 seed.

Losses

Well, two Bubble teams fell today in the Big East… Cincy and Georgetown lost to lesser foes. That can do nothing but help Auburn. Assuming we beat Florida and possibly Tennessee

Florida worries me...

…..How many years has it been since we’ve beaten them in basketball?

Auburn basketball is on the front page of ESPN.com

Just FYI. Beware of airborne swine.

Seems to me...

that the university has no business telling people the game is close to being sold out if that’s not the truth.

I would have gone with you, Zach, if the rest of the usual suspects on TET would have RSVP’d…

How many

season ticket holders and others just outright don’t show up to the game? Look at non-conference football games. We are pretty close to sold out for those games yet at times it seems like there are thousands of empty seats. It’s very possible the numbers in the press were accurate.

It's a shame...

…that Raycom is carrying the SEC tourney, b/c in AUBURN, ALABAMA, the heart of SEC country, Raycom has not syndicated the game to any station. It’s supposed to be on FSN South, but it’s not. I’m very mad and confused about this. I’m going to call Raycom tomorrow and really let them have it.

What do an Auburn fan and a bammer have in common? (Neither of them ever attended that school in tuscaloosa).

My cable box

says that WSFA will be carrying the normal NBC lineup all Thursday, Friday, and Saturday — no mention of the SEC tournament. I don’t understand.

and actually...

The Raycom website says that the Columbus, GA and Montgomery, AL viewing areas (both of which Auburn falls under) are supposed to see Raycom broadcasts on FSN South. Well I looked on my cable box and what will be airing during the time that the SEC Tourney will be going on will be the Pac-10 tourney. Now you tell me, why would someone in Auburn, Alabama want to see the PAC-10 tournament over the SEC tournament??

Don't believe your cable box

Alot of times my cable box will show that FSN is showing like a fishing show when actually it has SEC basketball on. Just check WSFA and FSN tomorrow to see which will be carried.

You were right, JD

I’m watching UK/Ole Miss on FSN right now.

I have a connection with Raycom media. Here is the skinny from the WSFA GM

“WSFA will air the two semi-final games of the SEC basketball tournament Saturday.

Our first game, Saturday at 11:30am, will be the winner of the LSU game Friday at noon and the winner of the South Carolina game Friday at 2pm.
(LSU plays the winner of the Ole Miss and Kentucky game Thursday at noon and South Carolina plays the winner of the Georgia-Mississippi State game Thursday at 2pm).

Our second game, Saturday at 2pm, will be the winner of the Auburn game Friday at 8:30pm and the winner of the Tennessee game Friday at 6:30pm.
(Auburn plays the winner of the Arkansas-Florida game Thursday at 8:30pm and Tennessee plays the winner of the Alabama-Vanderbilt game Thursday at 6:30pm).

So it is possible for our Saturday 2pm game to be Auburn-Alabama!”

Now this only applies to these two games on saturday. i think the others will be on FSN.

Butler...

Butler losing last night sure hurts our chances… that is one open spot that is now taken.

Schlabach say's we're in with...

the single win against UF and nothing more. He said it on Talking Hoops sunday night. Thats the most optimistic opinion from a national talking head that I have heard other than Bobby Knights insistance that AU deserves to dance now with the way we finished the season. Schlabach may be right but I will feel more certain about it if we reach the finals. In any case the national attention that we have gotten recently can’t hurt our chances with the selection committee.

I would have gone to bammer if my grades hadn't been good enough to go to AU
