Jacobs at it Again
Well according to this story, Jay Jacobs would rather us have a cupcake schedule than a chance to beat a big name school. UCLA was going to travel to the Georgia Dome to open the season in 2010. What is the issue? Jay Jacobs would not agree to it. I swear. ESPN/ABC was going to pay us $500,000 to play in the game. But instead we have to pay some podunk school like Arky State, or UT-Chatt to come and play us, just so we get 8 home games.
I am ashamed. I know that we play Clemson that year... great. Maybe we will be loaded. We should have a senior QB that is experienced. I guess it would be too much to ask to have a loaded schedule and win all the games. Alabama has no issue with playing a big game. Hell, they did it last year, and put themselves back on the map (by beating Clemson). They are doing it again this season against the Hokies. Good lord. The more I think about this the more frusterated I get.
All I can think is that Jacobs is a wuss. Why would we turn down the national exposure? No wonder the entire country thinks that the SEC schedules too many cupcakes. I would guess that the PAC 10 is laughing its collective heads off.

I'd rather play
OHIO STATE, USC, Penn State, Notre Dame (excluding the fact that they’re just as worthless as a cupcake team), etc. etc. Not to sound SEC biased or cocky, but I consider the ACC to be just as weak as both Alabama and Auburn’s homecoming opponent.
B ama has South Carolina for homecoming

I wouldn't call USC a cupcake...
They fared pretty well the last time they played the SEC if you will remember.
my bad
didn’t notice your punctuation. Notre Dame is indeed as worthless as a cupcake.
Having similar schedule talks
over on BSD (PSU’s board). I would love to see a PSU/AU match-up, if for no other reason to help me forget the last one. Two great fanbases. That would be a great OOC game.
PSU tried hard to get TCU to replace Eastern Illinois this year, but just couldn’t get it done. PSU is also a victim of the 8 game home schedule every other year which means we are at the mercy of the media lampooning our OOC.

Opportunities...
don’t knock very often. You must be prepared to seize them when they do. Who cares if we already have a quality OOC opponent lined up. The GA Dome would be like a home game for us. What is Jacobs thinking? This makes us look like a bunch of putzes…
If Bama takes it, they might as well have the dome as their new Legion Field.

I think this is a double edged sword.
UCLA is probably a year ahead of Auburn for righting the ship, and who knows where Clemson is. Two out of conference losses in one year for AU would be tough to stomach for AU, and the rest of the SEC.
Not sure why most fans...
of non-AU SEC teams seem to think we are going to win about 3 games next year. That’s not going to happen. I read where one alabama fan had us losing to Furman. Seriously?! We’re not as far behind as everyone thinks. If we had some O-linemen we’d be a damn good team this fall, I’m sure. I’m still expecting at least 8 wins this fall, and I feel like that’s a realistic goal. By 2010 I will expect us to compete for the West.
What do an Auburn fan and a bammer have in common? (Neither of them ever attended that school in tuscaloosa).
I hate Jay Jacobs

I know what to say
Jay Jacobs is a tool. In more ways than one.

When you think
a guy cant do any worse, this douche bag always proves you wrong. What does this say to possible recruits?

it sounds bad
but do we really know the whole story? there could be more to this.
ALABAMA leading the NCAA with infractions since 2001
That is irrelevant
Perception is the reality. We told them NO. End of story!

Whats more fun than making fun of Auburn fans?
seeing them make fun of themselves!
With the Clemson game on the schedule that year, no one will be able to call ya’lls schedule weak that year, but missing out on the chance to be a main event for a week is a bit….strange. We really didn’t get much credit for the Clemson win as the year went on last year, but it was the fact that it was a beat down with the EXPOSURE. Everyone brought it up, then said that Clemson was a failure, but they still remembered it because it was THE game that week. Auburn could have gotten that kind of attention and the spotlight never hurts you in the polls, recruiting, and in getting your fan base psyched up.
The Clemson win launched Bama
right up the polls.
IMO, Clemson’s no show was more of an arguement against the validity of pre-season polls than a knock against Bama. Clemson wasn’t responsible for ranking themselves in the polls.

Acid reign.....
Made a good point in his blog today. He said that alot of it could be the money that Auburn would stand to lose if it got rid of its home game. I can totally see where he is coming especially considering what we are building right now and what needs we will have in the future (indoor practice facility). So if thats Jacobs biggest problem then i could understand that. But everyones right concerning the national exposure that we will be giving up. Even in a lose we are giving up the attention of having the marque game that week. In Atlanta, where alot of future recruits will be looking at us. Granted it does seem like a catch 22. Damned if we do and damned if we don’t. But i’m with everyone else. I want some of that ass from out west. I want the exposure. Damn the money.
Then again its not my wallet.
War Eagle, See ya’ll at the spring game. I’ll be the lone guy in the section 17 wheelchair.
That dog don't hunt...
I’m sorry folks, I just don’t buy into all of what’s being said.
Although I’m not a Jay Jacobs fan, I’ve got to defend him on this one.
The schedule has already been set and although AU probably could have gotten out of one of the other non-conference games, it would have involved breaking a signed contract and screwing up another team’s schedule. Also, any additional costs resulting from breaking contract would offset any additonal revenue from scheduling UCLA.
Additionally, the head coach probably has enough clout to make this game happen if he so desires, yet we didn’t really get much of a response from him, did we?
While I’ll be the first to agree that the schedule change may have provided some additional benefits over one of the patsy games, it may have created more problems than it would solve.
For anyone that wants to bring up the Citidel argument from 2004, if I’m not mistaken, AU had originally scheduled Penn State and Penn State opted out of the contract several months before the date of the game. Something that AU had no control over. AU had to scramble frantically just to find any available opponent.
For all of the BAMMERS that want to throw rocks, I’d like to know several things:
1) How did UA do against UCLA the last time they played?
2) Why did UA drop LA Tech and LA Monroe from their schedule?
3) It’s a known fact UCLA has an opening on their schedule, why have Mal Moore and Nick Sabin not busted a move to replace a patsy and schedule them?
That dog won't hunt 83 Tiger...
First of all, it was Bowling Greene that was going to play Auburn. They opted out and played Oklahoma University instead and that became the deciding factor in putting in OU instead of AU. Secondly, we would’ve gotten $500,000 for playing in Atlanta not to even mention the exposure it would have given the Tigers. Thirdly, we pay cupcakes to come out here, not vice versa. Rarely, do those games garner enough fan support that the game actually helps Auburn. There is no excuse here. Auburn got screwed with the Citidel situation. Now, it’s screwing itself. Nice Job Jay Jacobs-you’re hell bent on ruining Auburn buddy.
I agree...
with your point, but we would have still had to pay something to whoever we dropped. Not as much as we were going to pay them to play, but something.
But who cares. We should have taken the game

I read that the revenue from a home game equals about 3M, so subtract the 500k for taking the UCLA game, but add in the cost of breaching the contract with Cupcake U, and we’re still way behind fiscally.
However, a program that can afford to pay a coach +5M not to coach, just because ’it’s the right thing to do’, should be able to afford the relatively minor loss of 2M or so to play a game like this in the national spotlight. At that cost I think the ‘right thing to do’ is to SCHEDULE THIS GAME.
if I’m not mistaken, AU had originally scheduled Penn State and Penn State opted out of the contract several months before the date of the game. Something that AU had no control over. AU had to scramble frantically just to find any available opponent.
I know no one will read this, but I might as well post it. Do you have a link to support this? We were supposed to play Bama in 04-05, not AU.
