Another Big Blunder By Jacobs

Ucla_cheerleaders_medium
Like what you see?  Forget about it.

"Oops! I did it again."  That line is more than an old Brittany Spears' song. These days it's more like athletic director Jay Jacobs' mantra.  Just when it seemed Jacobs was beginning to get a little positive traction from the job football coach Gene Chizik has done early on, he goes and thumbs his nose at ABC Sports and an opportunity to be the headliner for the opening weekend of the 2010 college football season. And we think ESPN hates us now.

The response by Auburn fans over the news that Jacobs passed on the opportunity to play UCLA at the Georgia Dome on national television has been met with mostly outrage - and for good reason.  Considering the string of bad press that has come Auburn's way over the past six months, you'd think school officials would jump at the opportunity to be the marquee game to kickoff a football season.

When you play in the SEC with the likes of Florida, Georgia, LSU, Tennessee and Alabama you jump at the chance to get an advantage in exposure. The ineptness of this athletic department becomes more mind-boggling by the minute.

Forget the lame arguments being made by Jacobs for not playing the Bruins. Do you honestly believe that Arkansas State would have a problem rescheduling its game with Auburn for the following season if they were guaranteed nearly $1 million? Why not throw them a bone and offer to play them for two years if they agree to the change?

It hurts to say it, but simply put, Auburn officials wimped out.

Don't give me this crap that Auburn plays Clemson two weeks later and two tough non-conference opponents are too much. Who says that UCLA or Clemson will be much better than they were this past season? Lord knows Auburn should be better.

I'll remind Coach Chizik that Pat Dye, a man who's apparently a mentor to him, played Texas, Florida State and Maryland during the 1983 SEC Championship Season. All three of those non-conference teams were in the top 20. That season established Auburn as the dominant power in the SEC and things stayed that way for almost a decade.

The only real negative to playing UCLA in Atlanta is the loss of a home game. However, until a few years ago, seven home games were the most a school could hope for in a season. That would still be the case in 2010.

So instead of packing the Georgia Dome with orange and blue in what essentially would have been a home game, Auburn fans will be relegated to welcoming Arkansas State in a meaningless opener on a hot Saturday night. There will be no, "You're looking live at the Georgia Dome" from Brent Musburger. Instead there will probably be a crowd of 78,000 that will be announced as more than 84,000 at Jordan-Hare Stadium.

Thanks Jay.  I can hardly wait.

Agree

I have been waiting to hear your take on this Jay and I couldn’t agree more! Why give the media another reason to BASH us. I also hate it that JJ used the city of Auburn as an excuse. Take revenue away from the city! What do you think moving the Iron Bowl to Friday at 1:30 PM is going to do? I know that I was planning on spending Friday and Saturday in Auburn this Nov. living it up. Now I have to drive from Atlanta early enough to get a good 3-4 hours of tailgating in and the outcome decides if I am going to even stay the night.

OK I am done with my rant. Ready for A-Day tomorrow.

I'll write the letter...

But, Jacobs is hell bent on doing as bad as he can. I truly believe that.

So I emailed Jacobs

and got this in return:

Thank you for taking the time to email and share your views on our 2010 football schedule.

Unfortunately, when we were contacted about the possibility to play UCLA, our schedule was already full and contracts signed for the 2010 season. However, we look forward to discussing future schedules with UCLA and any other BCS school for 2012 and beyond.

Please know that I personally appreciate the passion you have for Auburn football, and your views are always welcome.

God bless and War Eagle,

Jay

Kind of agree

I know that Jay Jacobs denied the UCLA game for 2010 season, but he said he was willing to sign a contract for the 2012 season. Considering the 2010 season was already full, I see nothing wrong with it. Moving around Arkansas State after signing a contract with them is just wrong, and I personally think Jacobs made the right decision.
UCLA was the one that denied the 2012 date as far as I’ve read. Why aren’t they getting flak for that? This whole thing is being blown out of proportion because people won’t read the footer. We were willing to schedule them in 2012. That doesn’t sound like shying away from a challenge to me.

Well since he passed

on it this go around, there is no guarantee they will offer it to us again any time soon.

I agree.

Whether we like it or not ESPN/ABC is the voice of college football. We jumped at the chance to play Washington State, Kansas State and West Virginia. We did it for national exposure. We also did it becuase we needed another game on the schedule. We moved a game on one of those seasons. Now we did not CANCEL one, but I am sure that Arky State would have been fine losing a game against us. Especially if they still got part of thier pay for comming. Which I am sure is non refundable.

If I was ESPN, I would not come back to Auburn with any generous offers anytime soon. There are plenty of other schools that would jump at the chance to play a high profile game, on national TV

Auburn's out of conference scheduling always makes me sad

when i was 9 years old my dad took me to my first Auburn game. it was the 1987 Season opener against the Texas Longhorns and Auburn completely destroyed them…that game more than any other reason is why i truly loved Auburn, seeing them play against another national program and feeling the energy and excitement in the stadium was just amazing for a young boy. it’s sad that over the past decade or so Auburn has shyed away from these sorts of matchups (outside of the home & home with USC). i think if Auburn wants to become a recruiting powerhouse they have to become more aggresive with who they schedule, it can only help with exposure and recruiting. this was a total ball drop from an athletic department that most of us have grown completely sick of.

by suicidewatch on Apr 17, 2009 11:46 AM CDT reply actions

Wow, someone still can claim support of Jay Jacobs

They wanted to play now not in 2012. Jacobs knew of the exposure it would bring. He also knew that it would help recruiting. We could get a five year old in there to do a better job than what he’s doing.

it should also be noted

UCLA really do have the hottest cheerleaders in the country. the song girls get all the love, but UCLA has them beat hands down.

Pac-10 Cheerleaders

We had an in-depth discussion on Pac-10 cheerleaders over at CGB and the UCLA girls did win squad of the year for the pac-10. Here is the discussion thread if you are interested.

Jay Jacobs is an imbecile.

There is no other way to put it. The dipshit can set and say that he must honor a contract with a cupcake all he wants but AU has a reputation for not only scheduling light but of getting out of marquis matchups that (dare I say it) were under contract. See FSU and Clemson for the most recent examples. AU can afford the buyout for the Arky State or UT Chattanooga contract that may already be in place. We all can see the benefit of the matchup in the Georgia Dome regardless of the outcome……the exposure would be huge. Jay Jacobs in an incompetent moron that could’nt manage a McDonalds much less an elite atheletic department and the sooner he is gone the better. How much longer must AU suffer because of incompetence. Put Jay Jacobs and Bobby Lowder and give them the heave ho for the better of our Alma Matre. Jackasses.

I would have gone to bammer if my grades hadn't been good enough to go to AU

Good point!

This isn’t the first time Jacobs has been called out for his lack of recruiting prowess. I think the last time, he tried to blame it on the fact that other teams were too scared to play us. Don’t think that excuse will work this time.

Todd, will you be coming tomorrow? You haven’t RSVP’d. We’ll have few belts and go storm Jacobs’ office!
