Malzahn's Big Play Offense Rules The Day

AUBURN, Ala. (AP) - Neil Caudle knows the big plays and points Auburn's offense put up in Saturday's spring game came with a caveat.

Caudle and fellow quarterback Kodi Burns were facing a defense that was a mix-and-match group with a number of key players out or limited with injuries.

The Tigers offense produced 70-yard runs by newcomer Onterio McCalebb and receiver Terrell Zachery on an end-around. Ben Tate only had four carries, but they produced 72 yards and touchdowns of 46 and 9 yards on his first two series. Darvin Adams had a 45-yard catch and Mario Fannin a 41-yarder.

To Caudle, it was a solid debut for offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn's no-huddle, shotgun attack.

"I know the defense is banged up and they didn't have all of their guys," said Caudle, who passed for 161 yards and two touchdowns. "But it's a big confidence-builder for us to go out there and hang up that many points on them."

How many points? The offense, which scored six touchdowns, won 57-31 under the scoring system of new coach Gene Chizik that rewarded big plays ? offensively and defensively and extended drives along with TDs. The starting offense went against the second-team defense for much of the game.

An announced crowd of 45,381 showed up for Chizik's public debut at Jordan-Hare Stadium and got a small taste of Malzahn's much-anticipated offense, which ran 55 plays in the 90-minute scrimmage. What they didn't witness was the conclusion of the quarterback battle or anything beyond the base offense and defense.

Chizik and Malzahn both said Caudle and Burns will continue to jockey for the starting spot in fall camp.

"We're looking for guys to be able to move the football team, and not turn the ball over and just be great managers of our offense," Chizik said. "For the most part, that happened today.

"We've got a long way to go, so there's not going to be any decisions made on who's the guy and who's not the guy. We know that this thing's probably going to play out a good bit. It was good to see both of them have a little bit of success today."

Good To Finally Meet You!

We’ll probably see you again during the regular season. I’m sure Jonno will be up for a few, too.

QB Race

I have not watched the “Tape” yet, but Caudle looked much better to me yesterday. I still think Kodi is capable, but Neil just looked better. I am sure after seeing the film I will have a better judgement.

Nothing new here but McCalebb is fast. Really fast. So is Harry Adams, but he looks to have hands like a clock right now. Maybe over the summer he can work on that and get some timing down.

Our OL is strong as a first team. Tate and McCalebb both had huge holes to run through with the first team. The second team is very weak. They could not black anyone… period. Fannin is going to be our Ronnie Brown type. He will be lined up all over the field. He is too good to be left on the sidelines.

Our WR will be fine… at least if they are playing against a depleted secondary like they were yesterday. I am not too worried about them making catches this season.

Freeman made a couple of plays, but our LBs looked out of position quite a bit. Again had to see everything live. I am betting WEA and Acid will have plenty of comments as well.

Sorry my schedule was a bit hectic, that traffic outside of ATL set me back. Nice to meet you guys, and we should try to hook up again, at some point.

If you are a War Damn Eagle, you can War Damn anything.

I've pretty much got to agree with everything Zach said!

……I didn’t see nearly enough at the stadium, to render much in the way of verdicts. I did have a great time meeting everyone, and drinking Maker’s Mark in the sun! Lots of good football nostalgia conversation, which I love! I learned a lot, too. I think if I return to the A-Day game next year, the plan will be to go in the gate and get a good seat, as soon as they open ‘em! Party time and food can wait till after the game. We blew it this year, showing up to the stadium right at 1:00. That was a bad plan, and I’m as responsible as anyone…

…..I’m worried about the defense, but we were minus quite a few starters. While we were fighting through the crowd towards the end zone seats, Ben Tate broke a big run up the middle. All three linebackers and both safeties had him bracketed, and no one laid a finger on him. That made my stomach drop… Our safeties let guys get WAY behind them all day, too. To me, it looked like Malzhon’s game plan was to work-the-sideline, work-the-sideline, work-the-sideline, POST/deep ball! And those safeties would be tired from running, and get scorched. And when your base play is option to the H-Back side, those counters were devastating, at least with the starting O-line.

……McCaleb has to be our kick return guy, right? Everyone else looked like they were running in quicksand, compared to him!

……I had my computer set up to record the live broadcast, and… evidently it spent the afternoon shut down. I’m recording the re-broadcast this evening, and I’ll have an analysis up after I review it!

Sorry I didn't hook up with you guys at Loco's on Saturday!

I was sick on Saturday, so I didn’t even get to the game. I will neither confirm nor deny that the reason I was sick was my actions the night before. Hope we’ll do it again sometime, I’d love to talk football with you guys!

I did watch on CSS though, and thought the design of some of those offensive plays was great. The reverse we scored on was a thing of beauty. However, I remember thinking last year we looked pretty good, so I won’t get too excited. It was just nice watching football again!

I hate to admit this.....

but due to my daughter having a meltdown (tantrumus maximus) and my wife insisting on having another margarita……I missed the whole first half of the game. But the travails of a 5 year old daddy’s girl and a margarita fiend (I can throw no stones here as I have also sinned in the past) sometimes trump the wishes of Daddy. However, WEA, Acid, Jonno it was good to finally meet you if only briefly at Loco’s….and I hope next time I can both arrive on time and get to the game promptly as well. But to sum up the day……a good time was had by all. My kids now want to move to Auburn and to be honest with you it wouldn’t upset daddy either.

As far as the game analysis…..I will have to watch it on the tube to pull anything meaningful from it, I was too busy answering questions and enjoying the look on my kids faces as they were trying to grasp the immensity of the stadium and campus.

I would have gone to bammer if my grades hadn't been good enough to go to AU
