Campbell and Brown at the Center of Trade Talks as NFL Draft Nears

Will Campbell still be in a Redskins uniform Saturday night?

When the NFL draft cranks up Saturday afternoon, this past season's Auburn seniors are not expected to get a lot of play. But the same cannot be said of some current Tiger NFL players. At least two big name former Auburn players are at the center of trade talks as the draft approaches.

Former Auburn defensive lineman Sen'Derrick Marks is expected to hear his name called sometime in the second round and should be the highest Auburn player selected. But the big story centers around Washington quarterback Jason Campbell and Dolphins running back Ronnie Brown.  Both players are widely believed to be on the trading block.

Campbell has gotten the most attention in recent days. It seems that Daniel Snyder, the unstable and unpredictable owner of the Redskins has fallen in love with USC quarterback Mark Sanchez. It's been reported by the Washington media that Snyder is negotiating to move up in the draft to acquire Sanchez.

This morning there are two teams being mentioned as possible destinations for Campbell.  The first is the New York Jets. It's rumored that the club has no interest in trading up for Sanchez, but does have a lot of interest in Campbell. The Jets are looking for a quarterback following the retirement of Brett Favre.

Another team getting some mention is the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Former Redskins quarterback and current Buccaneers director of player personnel Doug Williams is a huge Campbell fan and believes he fits nicely into the new Tampa Bay offense.

All of this comes in the wake of Snyder's ill-fated move to acquire former Vanderbilt and Denver quarterback Jay Cutler last month. If there's any consolation in all of this for Campbell it's that most Redskins fans are squarely in his camp. The way they've treated him has been nothing short of atrocious.

You're unlikely to find another player in the NFL who's weathered this kind of storm with the class Campbell has shown. He continues to surprise his teammates, showing up to work every day and working harder than most. "My teammates said, 'Jason why are you here?' And I told them: 'I'm still the quarterback of this team until they get rid of me.'"

Why Ronnie Brown is on the trading block is more of a mystery.  Coming off an injury plagued 2007 campaign, Brown had a breakout season a year ago and helped lead the lowly Dolphins back to contention, earning a playoff birth and himself a trip to the Pro Bowl. Like at Auburn, Brown does more than carry out of the backfield. His hands are considered among the best in the league at running back.

Brown seems to be the perfect back for Miami's new Wildcat formation. But team president Bill Parcells sees trading Brown as an opportunity to squeeze another player out of Saturday's draft. Purportedly he's looking for a first and third round pick in exchange for the former Auburn back.

So while it's doubtful most Auburn fans will be glued to the draft this year, there still may be plenty of action involving former Auburn players. Let's hope that Campbell lands somewhere stable and is able to finally put some roots down and be given a fair shot. Of course the downside is that it's likely he'll claim his 10th coordinator by the time camp opens in August.

Brown's prospects appear brighter. Following a Pro Bowl season you can bet they'll be lined up to claim his services.  Both of these fine men make you proud to be Auburn fans.

Jason and Ronnie are both class acts...

With Jason Campbell with the Redskins, I have been a fan the past few years. If they don’t appreciate his potential, I hope he does land with the Jets or Buccaneers. I like both teams and think he could contribute (once he learns yet another new system from yet another coordinator).

As for Ronnie Brown, ARE THE DOLPHINS CRAZY??? Again, if they don’t appreciate such a great talent, then he needs to go some place that does. I have always been a Dolphins fan, and in really hope he doesn’t go to a team I can hardly stand. That would be awful.

I wish both of them the best whether they stay put or wind up with new teams.
WDE, guys!

Yes, I went to Auburn! Is there anyplace else? WAR EAGLE!!!

After 4 years...

there’s no more hoping for potential. I think they wanted more than what they’ve gotten out of Campbell. I think he can deliver for another team, perhaps.

Tampa would be good, but it would be hard for me to root for them and the Falcons.

The No Fun League

…..Parcells is always doing stuff like that. I guess he figures he can count on Ricky Williams not to flunk any more drug tests. Parcells LOVES the vets, and the draft picks. At Dallas, all he did was keep adding older players. Sure, we’d look great in August and September, but come December, it would be a down hill slide. The old guys would get tired, and the Cowboys would limp to the finish. If we were lucky, we might make the playoffs and get whomped in the first round.

…..I don’t mind Campbell being traded. They can trade Carlos Rogers, too. I hate the Redskins! Campbell might be a good fit in Carolina or Jacksonville. Closer to home, too.

for Jason's sake

i hope the Redskins do trade him. he’s be better off getting out of that situation. giving up on your young QB is exactly why you don’t win, Snyder. what a douche.

that being said, as a Falcons fan i hope he goes to the Jets. it’s bad enough the Bucs have Cadillac…crippled or not.

The Redskins...

…also might wanna pay attention to what their fans say.

but when has an NFL team ever cared about their fans?

As A Dolphins Fan, I Am Horrified At The Prospects Of Trading Brown

but I would hardly say Parcells deserves to be labeled with the “No Fun League” tag after allowing Sparano to bring the Wildcat in. Parcells certainly made the right move in drafting Long and Henning and bringing in Pennington and letting Taylor go dancing off.

Dallas is the only place he’s not succeeded and I would say that is more a function of Jerry Jones than Parcells.

Snyder is Jerry Jones without as much smarts. And without Jimmy Johnson and the Hershel Walker trade.

I'm a huge Skins fan, and I'm pretty sure we're keeping Campbell

I know this was being talked about a week or two ago, but last I heard that was old news and now we’re looking towards Michael Oher from Ole Miss…I don’t know how the Ronnie Brown situation is going, but i’m pretty sure we’ll be sticking with JC. As long as Zorn can get some confidence into Jason, he’ll be perfect at QB!

I have been a 'Skins fan since I could talk..

But I swear, if they trade JC, I’ll never pull 4 ‘em again! I still won’t ever pull for the cowboys, though.

WAR EAGLE!

I can't see

Brown going anywhere at this point. They added Pat White as a receiver for the wildcat in the second round and the best they could get is going to be a few late picks for a perfect fit back for their system, it wouldn’t make sense to get rid of him now. If they could have traded him for a first and second rounder this year, I think they would have. All of this is coming up because he is a free agent after next season and he will be a high priced commodity at that point.

As far as Campbell goes, I think they might still end up trading him for cash and a player or something. I think this has shown Jason that they really have no faith in him and I am not sure whether they are wrong or not. He has far exceeded what I thought he could do in the NFL but I am not sure if he can be an elite player.
