Questions from a Casual Auburn Fan

Ok, so since these posts need 75 words, I'll give a little background as to how a kid from Oregon, who has never been to Alabama, became an Auburn fan. Growing up, I had a friend who was from Alabama, including his ENTIRE family. They are all Bammers, except for him. During the Iron Bowl every year, he needed somebody to root for Auburn with him to even out the household (both his parents are Bammers). Then, as it turns out, my dad's best friend from college moves to Atlanta, and ends up marrying a girl who was born, raised, and went to Auburn. The way she talked about it the Tigers got me so fired up about them, I couldn't help but love the BEST team in Alabama. (Bammers can say 36-0 all they want, I just respond with a simple 6 in a row. They are quick to remind of their past National Championships, but apparently have forgotten the past 7 years? Interesting...) Anyways, I digress...

Being 100% devoted to Oregon State, and being on the West Coast, it's hard to get good coverage of Auburn sports, mainly football. In fact, the only insight I do get is from the media, which has it's head so far up Nick Saban and Urban Meyer's a$$es that nothing gets West of the Mississippi. So my questions to you guys are, how has the spring been looking? Have the fans been happy with Gene Chizik so far? I was personally disappointed with the hire, but haven't been able to follow up much. Anyways, any insight into the team this year from a fans perspective would be greatly appreciated.

I will kick it off for you.

I think that the atmosphere and the attitude around and toward Chizik has really changed and I think a lot of Tuberville fanatics are really starting to see that Chizik could the best thing for Auburn now.

Spring scrimage wasn’t the greatest but they are working with limited talent across the board on offense and serious depth issues that have really developed over the past 4 years recruiting. Every kid that visits Auburn right now for next years class has immediately put them near the top, so the coaching staff is doing a great job of selling themselves to potential recruits. I am a little more nervous about next season than I was a couple months ago at this point but I think that the staff will have a top 3 to 5 class next year and really start competing again on both sides of the ball in about 2 seasons if given the chance.

I was upset about them hiring Chizik for about 20 minutes and then really thought about it and we really haven’t done well since he left. He has been a great defensive mind and just couldn’t make a miracle at ISU in the years he was there. If Tuberville was gone a coupel years ago, Chizik would have been one of the top prospects to bring in and that shouldn’t change with a poor performance at a number 6 team in the Big 12

Nice...

So tell me how it feels to “live in the past”? The glory days of the number six will never be forgotten, even after Alabama wins the next 6, 7, 8, 9, or even 10! 2002-2007 were the days!

I certianly...

wouldn’t start claiming 6, 7, 8, 9 or even 10 straight Iron Bowls until you have them in the bag. I guess you can wait another 40 years or so and then just go back and retroactively claim the Iron Bowl wins from 2002 to 2008. I wouldn’t even be so bold as to claim to have Saban as head coach for 1, 2 or even 3 more years until they are done.

I'm cautiously...

…..optimistic about this year. Depth on the front seven, especially linebacker, is a problem. In fact, I’m not really sure we have 3 SEC-capable starters at linebacker. Return men will be green, but talented. O-line is thin, too, but I think we’ve got capable starters, if they stay healthy.

…..I’m more excited about playmakers than I’ve been since Carnell and Ronnie were at Auburn. We do need a QB to settle down and not lose games for us, but.. come on. Malzhan ran about 5 plays total, over and over again on A-day, and we averaged 9-7 yards a carry and 8.5 yards per pass. While I’m a Defense guy, and those numbers horrify me, It’s pretty impressive considering who played. When we start running the whole package, it could be pretty special!

…..Biggest improvement I saw at A-Day was receiver play. A lot of the tells are gone. You used to be able to pick out guys when they lined up, and knew there was no chances they’d be thrown the ball. Troop’s got ’em all running sharp routes, and catching the ball. Even if we run it more than we pass it, those guys are going to be selling the pass, and thus have to be respected.

……Needless to say, if we get really torn up on injuries, we’re looking at a 4-8 season. But I think 8 wins is reasonable, if we work hard, and don’t get too many people hurt. If we have 2004-level injury luck and quarterbacking improves, we’ll be in the hunt for the SEC title. It’s going to be an exciting year, regardless. Let’s hope all us fans stay on board, and pull for Auburn.

…..War Eagle!

Just for you Taylor Tot

Why don’t you tell us how you feel about being belittled by your self serving coach when he blames the Tide Fans for a couple of losses? Or better yet, why don’t you tell us how it feels to go 12-0 with Nothing To Show? With the number of arrested Tide players during the Sabin Era, I would think that you would have your hands with taking care of damage control.

Don’t ever forget: It’s all about Nick!!!

Just wait, you’ll feel like a jilted lover when he bolts for money.

Yeah...

You know its bad when Nick Saban tells you that you are too Arrogant.

With the lack of depth at important positions and the switching of staffs, It should take a couple of years to get back to full strength. However, Mattco’s right. If we can pull a couple of good classes then you could see us back to strength quicker than the anticipated 3-5 years. We’ve got some real talent already in place. Its the depth of talent that is thin. And in the SEC you have to have depth or luck. Rarely does a team have injury luck. Alabama had it last year until they got to the bowl game. But as soon as they lost 2 O-linemen it was over. Its what seperates the LSU’s, Florida’s and Georgia’s from the Miss St.‘s, Vanderbilt’s, and Kentucky’s.

I was a lil weary of him at first but now i’ve grown to like him and his staff. Up to this point it is hard to argue with any move that he’s made. He has hired a competent staff, He is being agressive on the recruiting trail, he hasn’t embarrassed us in the media, and he’s not sugar coating our team or our upcoming season. For a coach that hasn’t played a game yet, its hard not to like what he’s done so far. I understand what he’s up against and i will give him my support for the next couple of years to turn things around. But i’m not the powers that be, and they are usually not as patient as i am.

If you wanna keep up with the team on a daily basis try: http://www.sportscallonline.com/radio/ . Just click on the listen live box and it will stream a pretty good radio show to you everyday. 4 central till 7 central. Bill, Dan, and Sharpie do a pretty good and objective show about the football team and other happenings in Auburn sports. With live call -in’s its usually pretty informative. Never listen to the Paul Finebuam radio network for Auburn news. Its usually to bias or pro-bama. Eventhough Finebuam will never admit that.

Good Luck and War Eagle.

By the way....

I love the State of Oregon. The State is beautiful and the people can go out of their way to be nice. Been there twice on vacations and it was hard to leave.

Glad to hear from a...

distant (tiger) cousin. I believe the future of the program looks good if we give this bunch of coaches a chance. You’ve got to plan a trip to the Plains and witness a game live at Jordan Hare Stadium. I have been to college games in several locations around the nation and there is no way to adequately describe the Auburn atmosphere , you have to be there. Thanks for posting. Keep the faith going in the north west and I hope the Beavs make it to the Rose Bowl !

I've been trying to take a trip down to Atlanta for a while

My “relatives” live in La Grange and my “aunt” promised me a game if I ever made my way down there. Actually, 2 years ago, Oregon State and Auburn were in talks for a game on The Plains for this past season, which I was excited about. Talks fell through, however, as Auburn (as I understand from the OSU Athletic Dept) wanted either a 1 game home series or a 2 for 1 with us. Our AD said no way. Ironically, we end up having to schedule Penn State for a 1 game road trip, and we get blasted on National TV.

And don’t let the friendliness of poster chowder fool you. Jahvid Best is 2nd best RB in Pac-10. Jacquizz Rodgers is the truth!

I support Takimoto in his effort to support Roger Kieschnick in his quest to becoming the best Kieschnick ever to play professional baseball.

Not another Quizz v. Best Debate

They are both excellent running backs that excel in each of their offensive systems. A little known fact, the Pac-10 is and has been very dedicated to the run game, as illustrated here.

http://collegefootball.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=935590

To return to your comment, I never said Jahvid Best is the best Pac-10 running back (that is debatable), I said he was the most likely to win the Heisman (I also implied he is the faster back, which is true). I stand by this belief, but will stop at that as I don’t feel this blog is an appropriate venue to hold this debate.

Hahaha I'm just trying to stir the pot

I’ve actually been very open about how I feel Jahvid is the best running back in the Pac-10, if not the whole country.

LaGrange....

Thats where i live. Its an easy jump to Auburn from here. Maybe 30 minutes by interstate. Come on down for a visit. You won’t regret it.

You right about that Best kid too. He’s good. And so is that Rodgers kid. Rodgers and his brother just came out of nowhere to jump on the scene last year. What year is he?

Jacquizz Rodgers is a true sophomore this year, James Rodgers is a true junior
