Tiger Prowl Sends Bama Into A Growl

Auburn's Tiger Prowl hits Birmingham

Who knows what this crazy Gene Chizik experiment will lead to come fall.  He may prove to be the second coming of Pat Dye - or Tommy Tuberville if you prefer. Then again, he could end up being Auburn's version of Mike Dubose or Mike Shula. Your guess is as good as mine.

Whatever happens, his first act has proved to be damn good theater. Whether it's saving a recruiting class on life support or luring the two top prep running backs in the country to Auburn for a visit, Chizik refuses to be outworked by anyone.  Even his harshest critics have to be impressed.

Much attention has been given to this week's Tiger Prowl, where Auburn assistant coaches have canvassed the state in stretch limos (usually a different color Hummer each day) visiting high school coaches from the bottom of the state to the top.  When asked earlier this week about it, Alabama coach Nick Saban looked like he'd soiled himself. Could the self proclaimed master of recruiting be losing at his own game to the rookie coach at Auburn?

"We're all selling the same product. We have to do something that puts ours ahead or separates ours from the rest,'' said assistant coach Trooper Taylor "A lot of people say it's Auburn versus Alabama. It's really about an in-state deal. We can't afford to lose Jamarcus Russell to LSU and Pat White to West Virginia. If those kids were playing for in-state schools just think about the championships. It's really about keeping the kids in state.''

It's much too early to tell how this staff will fair against the Gadsden loving school to the north; but it's safe to say they have gotten their attention. Earlier this week Paul Finebaum and his band of toothless callers were yacking it up, laughing at the move by the Auburn staff. By late Thursday, Finebaum had seen the wisdom of the Tiger Prowl and Bama fans were turning on each other.

Suddenly, in this most important recruiting period, Chizik and his staff are the talk of the state. You can bet the Red Elephant Club is hunkered down in its bunker tonight burning candles and calling on the spirit of the Bear for help.

As I've talked before, I've had the privilege of being on the inside for the recruiting of a four-star athlete who has offers from coast-to-coast. This young man was at the now infamous shirt ripping meeting with Tennessee coaches earlier this year. You may remember that during the recruiting weekend, Vol coaches got the recruits in a room and began screaming and hollering and pumping the players up by ripping off their shirts and encourages the athletes to join them.

Talking with the recruit's Dad the following Monday, he remarked how stupid the move was and figured his son would feel the same way. To his surprise, the boy had just the opposite reaction. To quote his son, "It was kind of cool.  It was just crazy."

How often we forget how it feels to be 17 years-old. Give credit to these Auburn coaches. They are locked in and in-tune with how these kids think. We see a Hummer and think stupid. They see it as cool and something they want to be a part of. If we'd allow ourselves a moment, maybe we'd secretly admit it's kind of cool too.

For the record, it's been reported that Alabama coaches were called in from their assignments and redirected to the same schools that Auburn assistants were visiting earlier in the week.

Who's stupid now?

Never fear Jay...

It’s sad when you have to resort to cheap gimmicks just to have recruits give you a glimmer. Limo’s aren’t going improve your recruiting rankings and I’ll be back to remind you of that on signing day when you finish behind Alabama, LSU, Florida, Georgia, Ole Miss, Tennessee, and Arkansas once again.

Trooper Taylor can forget about losing Pat White to West Virginia or Jermarcus Russell to LSU because that was before Saban took over this state. Now he can leave it to Saban and whatever recruits he doesn’t want, you guys can have (which are the Alabama rejects).

Keep it down home, cuz.

We will keep it down home, cuz.

You just keep your guys out of the bookstore and away from the local Gadsden Dodge dealership.

Never fear Tator Tot...

Saban is going to be too busy fighting off the NCAA inquiry and planning where he is going to jump ship to this time…we are not worried about little nicki…little nicki is going to take care of himself like he always does….that means leaving Bama in the dust for a bigger better opportunity…remember..he was going to stay at LSU forever….at MIAMI forever…dont kid yourself. He isnt going to have time to be worried about recruites, he’s going to be too busy covering his cheating behind.

You've got to love...

how they get on our blogs and have to comment with their usual garbage to make themselves feel better, when in reality they’re starting to realize that AU is not lying down and dying, and that we will be back — order will be restored, and they’re scared. WDE!

What do an Auburn fan and a bammer have in common? (Neither of them ever attended that school in tuscaloosa).

It's just a topic of conversation..

…much like the TN coaching staff ripping their clothes off for recruits. Honestly, I halfway expect the ncaa to ban this kind of display for the very reason you’re doing it. Basically, you’ve got several grown men in a gaudy limo disrupting an entire high school. I thought that was the reason they limited (banned?) head coach visits to high schools, because it caused such a commotion.

And seriously, if you think au coaches riding around the state in a limo in April is scaring Alabama fans, then I can only imagine the sheer terror that you must feel on National Signing Day.

yeah don’t amount to the way you felt for 6 years in a row punk. your on our site reading not your, so you must be the one worried. just your basic goofy , overweight ,toothless bear praising, houndstooth wearing elephant painting over the livingroom couch hanging bammer.. hahaha.

The rental limo gimmick surely is turning a few heads...

But it’s too bad Alabama has already taken five prospects that you guys recruited as well versus your one. This is going to ultimately turn out to be yet another embarrassment, even more so than the Tony Franklin experiment was.

silly bammer.

I would have gone to bammer if my grades hadn't been good enough to go to AU

I don't know why anybody didn't like it.

I think that this was a great move by the Auburn coaches. Plus, as you stated correctly, it’s getting EVERYBODY talking about Auburn. Even ESPN said that Auburn was making the most headlines in recruiting. If that doesn’t mean it’s getting the job done, I don’t know what does. Chizik is proving that he won’t be outworked. He may be out coached, but he won’t be outworked. I’m not necessarily interested in what this does with UA all that much. What does interest me, however, is the fact of keeping the great in-state recruits here. You see, the schools only have so many scholarships they can give out, and there are bound to be some top notch guys that may fall through the cracks and play out of state. I think with this kind of recruiting trail we’re doing a lot to keep a great prospect from slipping away. Now, I hope they come with something out of state too-I mean we’ve got some top guys in the OK and TX area we’re looking at. I would like some sort of cool thing to peak their interest as well.

I agree...I thought is was a great idea...got us on ESPN

but then again, I have two young football playing sons…I’m not out of touch with what is “sick” and what is “emo”

As much as i am a fan of doing things low key

That isnt how you win future star athletes over. This will work its over the top, demands attention, its a good idea all around. Like it or not i think it will work. For kids looking at mtv, pimp my ride and all the other garbage they play on Music Television (besides music) This plays to that. We have the money, we have to right direction.

great idea

I think everyone is paying too much attention to the vehicle. I mean yes, it’s obnoxious. I came from a private school that was really good at football and we constantly had SEC coaches/assistants visiting. I know FOR SURE that if a coaching staff pulled up in one of these babies they’d be the talk around school for a long, long time. undoubtedly the players love the attention too. if I were being recruited and Auburn pulled up in that thing, I’d be impressed for sure.

But back to what I was saying, the fact that ALL the coaches are coming together instead of one at a time I think is really standing out for us. our coaching staff is pretty crazy in terms of personality (trooper and luper). this just fits right along with it. I can confidently say that we are one of the most aggressive recruiting schools in the NCAA. and I have NEVER been able to say that before about Auburn. War Eagle coaches, keep up the good work.

It's THAT image...

that keeps me hanging on!

I’m with most of you. On it’s face, it is real cheesy, but look what a media whirlwind it’s caused.

by War Eagle Atlanta on May 1, 2009 9:53 AM CDT up reply actions

Whatever it takes...

…as long as it is legal. At first, I thought it was a little cheesy, but I’ve warmed up to the idea. Good psychological move on Auburn’s part! You have to someway counter the Saban factor. Why not go allin with the chips in even when you are holding a pair of 3’s?

Have a couple more Barfield like seasons and even Snoop won’t be able to help you.

by JEFFCODAWG on May 1, 2009 8:24 AM CDT reply actions

I laughed at first, but not anymore....

When I first saw the pics of these limos, especially the Hummers, I kind of rolled by eyes. However, it seems to be making a big impact, and I am all for anything that makes an impact in Auburn recruiting. We as adults do have to remember that what appeals to us probably won’t appeal to a 17 year old athlete. They won’t forget visits from ALL of our assistant coaches in a limo!

The only reason the UA people who have infiltrated this AU site (and others) don’t like it is because they are upset that their people didn’t think of it first. That is evidenced by Saban’s reported reaction. I think Chizk and company will give them big time competition for many years to come.

Yes, I went to Auburn! Is there anyplace else? WAR EAGLE!!!

Trooper Taylor is an absolute scream!!!

My best friend and I met Trooper Taylor recently, and he is a very witty and personable guy. I can see why the recruits relate so well to him. I know they are all good recruiters, but he is a jewel. I hope he coaches that well too.

Go get ’em, Trooper. WDE
