Bama Fans Believe Their Job Is A Top Five One - LOL

Aubearguys1_medium

Good Monday morning to all of you. It seems that my post on Friday about the top five college coaching jobs in America got the Bama Nation riled up. Some little twit who couldn't find Tuscaloosa with a road map, a GPS and Magellan in the passenger seat attacked me personally in a fanpost at Roll Bama Roll for not including Alabama among the top five coaching jobs - Quit laughing.

I know, it was absolutely hilarious. You could just feel the anger and resentment in his post. It was golden. I've sent it to everybody I know. It just sums up how delusional Alabama fans still are about their school.

I realize a lot of people like to bang on Roll Bama Roll because of its content. And true, it does veer from athletics from time-to-time; but in full disclosure I have to say that I believe Todd and his team do a damn good job over there. I don't get to visit as much as I'd like, but when I do, I find their coverage excellent - and yes, I admit I do enjoy the coverage outside of athletics. Don't shoot me.

But what I like most are the fans that frequent the site. The majority of them are good folks who seem to be level headed and objective. Sure they call us lame names and that's cool with me. It's good for the rivalry.

But what keeps me reading are the delusional ones who still believe Alabama is relevant. I just picture these people sitting around their trailers, drinking Pabst Blue Ribbon on their plaid couches with the kids running around in only a diaper and Paul Finbaum playing on the radio. On the wall next to George Wallace is a faded picture of Bear Bryant. Can you picture it? If you ever want to feel good about Auburn, spend an afternoon listening to some Finebaum callers. All of them are cast straight from "My Name is Earl."

I could bang on these people all day, but let's move on. I want to address why Alabama is not among the top five coaching jobs in the country and why they probably aren't among the top five in the SEC. Here we go...

  1. Probation - Probation - Probation - Has there been a more scandal plagued, rogue program in the nation over the past 15 years? Paying a quarter of a million dollars to an underperforming lineman brings into question not only ethics, but sanity. By the way, whatever happened to Gene Jelks? And now just as timely as the morning paper, it appears the "Textbook Five" are sending Bama starring right back into the barrel of another round of probation - you've got to hate that pesky "repeat offender" status. Even worse, that's just the appetizer. It looks like the NCAA is spending a beautiful spring in Gasden. Can you have a top five program if you don't actually have a team?  We'll find out.
  1. You need to be successful. Considering the Tide has lost seven of its last nine to its cross state rival and has largely been irrelevant for the past decade, this hardly has coaches clamoring to get to Tuscaloosa. Had Nick Saban not been drowning in Miami, its likely Joe "I'm a Screamer" Kines would be walking the sidelines today. The list of who turned the job down three years ago was longer than the unemployment line in Tuscaloosa County.
  1. The Mikes - Mike Dubose, Mike Price, Mike Shula. If the job is so good why are the coaches so bad? Enough said.
  1. The Bear is still dead. Is there anything more embarrassing than watching these coeds wear those stupid houndstooth hats? Being from the state of Alabama, I cringe every time a national television program shows one of these idiots wearing that goofy hat. For the one hundredth time, I'll say it again - Paul Bryant has done more to hurt Alabama in death than he ever did while coaching on the field. Do yourself a favor and forget about him. He's not coming back.
  1. Alabama is number two in its own state. I continually laugh at how Alabama people stick out their chest with pride because they finally fielded a decent football team - nevermind that embarrassing blowout to Utah. The Tide athletic program is pretty much inferior to Auburn's in every way. Look across the board at all sports. They are mediocre at best. With probation looming in football and Saban just a phone call away from leaving, it's likely the football team's success this past year is just an anomaly.

In the final analysis, Alabama's head coaching job falls behind those at Florida, LSU, Georgia, Tennessee and Auburn. If you don't believe me, just look at the motley crew of coaches who've taken the job over the past decade. Better yet, look at the name coaches who've turned it down.

It's got to be tough being a Bama fan over these past 25 years. To all of those who spoke ill of me over at Roll Bama Roll, I forgive you. I understand the hurt and frustration you must be feeling. I have you in my prayers.

War Eagle!

Let me get this straight...

SOME of you barnzoes (not all, but some) are implying that an Alabama team led by a coach with championship credentials who finished 12-2 in his SECOND season and has racked up two back-to-back NUMERO UNO recruiting classes is on the downfall, while an Opelika team who has steadily been on the decline for two years, coming off a 5-7 season with nothing above below average team filled with below average talent and a quarterback who puts third-stringer Spencer Pennington to shame, led by a first-year coach who’s NEVER came close to even having a MEDIOCRE season, and has brought in three straight mediocre recruiting classes is on the rise?

Dizzy logic like that is why no soul outside of the magical world of Lee County respects your program… or takes it seriously. You guys are in for a rude awakening… I’ll leave it at that!

Ahhhhh

I don’t know if I would call bama a top five job, either. I’m a bama fan, but a realistic one. The only thing I would argue on the list would be maybe put Texas or Oklahoma on that #5 spot. No one, save Florida, has that big of a recruiting base, and their facilities are obviously top notch.

Perkins, Dubose, Shula

All you have to do is look at how those three alumnus coaches have been vilified after the fact to know it’s a thankless job. If they’ll treat their own like that, imagine what they’ll do to an outsider.

If the job didn’t in fact come with more baggage than the Louis Vitton factory, neither Spurrier nor Rodriquez would have rebuffed them the way they did. And BTW, the only way Saban was lured was to give him enough power as so to make Hugo Chavez and Kim Jong Il jealous…

by War Eagle Atlanta on Apr 6, 2009 2:12 PM CDT reply actions

The only thing I would argue with

is that Shula hasn’t really been villified, and I think most of the fanbase thinks Dubose was (is) just too dumb for the job. With Perkins, I agree wholeheartedly. I have to agree that there is a lot of baggage with the job now. IF we can ever get the NCAA off our backs, then stay clean for a number of years, we can maybe have that tag of “great job” again.

Really?

So Auburn is a better job, yet the best man they can get to take it has a 5-19 career record as a head coach? Alabama’s still No. 2 in the state after 36-0? You mentioned Bama fans attacking you? After calling anyone who’s worn Crimson an ignorant hick right out of “My Name is Earl”? I’m sure some fans called you out, but it appears you give at least as good as you get.

I’d never read your blog before and now I can save myself the trouble. Decently-written cheerleading for Auburn, that’s about it.

I'd like to see

what $aban would be able to do at Iowa State — not a whole lot. For every winning season the Cyclones have had, they have had 10 losing seasons to go along with it. Not exactly an easy place to win. Let’s not forget that Chizik will the defensive mastermind at AU (Ted Roof will be running CHIZIK’s defense), and Chizik managed the #1 defense in the nation in 2004 at AU. If Chizik had never gone to Iowa State (the armpit of the college football world), and was still the DC at Texas, people would be calling this a GREAT hire for Auburn. So if alabama fans want to think that they will continue to run over us without a problem, they’d better think again. War Eagle.

What do an Auburn fan and a bammer have in common? (Neither of them ever attended that school in tuscaloosa).

by AUshorecm on Apr 6, 2009 8:09 PM CDT up reply actions

Not an easy place to win?

Didn’t his predecessor lead Iowa State to five consecutive bowl games and average seven wins per season? Get your facts straight, Barnie… and before you start on Alabama, you should first worry more about getting past Mississippi State and Vanderbilt. Enjoy a 3-9 season, including another beatdown by Alabama, and yet another mediocre recruiting class, stepchild!

by TaylorTot on Apr 7, 2009 1:24 AM CDT up reply actions

Yes, not an easy place to win

Dan McCarney never led Iowa State to 5 consecutive bowl games. “Get your facts straight,” gump. After ISU’s loss in the Houston Bowl (now called the Texas Bowl) in 2005 (McCarney’s 2nd-to-last season), they had a significant drop-off and only won 4 games in 2006, thus indicating that McCarney left the cupboard bare for Chizik. If you really want to think that Iowa State is a Big 12 powerhouse, then go ahead, but I have friends at Texas, K-State, Texas A&M, etc., who will laugh in your face. How quickly you delusional rednecks forget that college football can do a 180 in just 1 season. Remember how things worked out for both AU and that other school in 1999? And what about 2000? 3-9 is not going to happen, but if it makes you feel better to pretend it will, then go ahead, big guy… Whatever helps you sleep at night. WDE!

A truly unbiased opinion....hah

Really, Auburn is the better job in the state? What a wonderfully unbiased opinion. You also tout that your athletic department is superior to Alabama’s, I guess this would be citing the recent success of your Women’s basketball and Swimming and Diving Programs? I would like to point to Alabama’s Softball and Gymnastics team, and don’t tell me the Jeff Lebo and Auburn’s Men Basketball team are a program worth being proud of. He’s an NIT coach and everyone knows it. Alabama is also not afraid to hire an African American who is qualified for our coaching positions, something Auburn cannot say. 5-19.

Now as far as football goes, let’s discuss the current events in the state of Alabama and the SEC. Alabama fans will have to concede that this decade belongs to Auburn. This decade has seen possibly the greatest years in Auburn football. But what has this meant to the Auburn football program? The decade has yielded only one SEC Championship. In a decade where Auburn has touted their winning percentage, trips to Atlanta are scarce. While this might be the decade of Auburn’s dominance in the state, in their greatest years they were still unable to truly dominate not only the conference but their own division. Auburn will also have to face the fact that the decade is about to be over and we will soon be in the 2010’s, and Auburn will enter these years with an unproven coach and an offense that has little confidence.

Is there desperation on the Auburn boards? Of course there is. Look to the talk about Alabama that Auburn has put forth. Claims of extreme probation being handed down, even though national sports writers disagree. During the weeks leading up to signing day, Auburn boards flooded with false reports of Jim McElwain’s departure the day after signing day. If Auburn truly feels like they have a firm grasp on this state, they are not acting like it. They are desperate to regain the ability to secure talent within their state, while Auburn fans tout their ability to gain Georgia and Florida talent their coach openly admits to putting their recruiting priority to being able to recruit some of the top ten athletes in the state of Alabama.

Is Alabama a top 5 job in the country? It has been at times and maybe it will be again soon, but to say it is right now would be wrong. Is the coaching position behind Auburn? Of course not. Alabama is a top tier SEC job even after the long run of mediocrity. This is a program with a history of winning, while Auburn is a program that has accumulated the same amount of SEC titles as Ole Miss.

The most important question for Auburn fans now shouldn’t be if their coaching position is better than Alabama’s. The question should be if they will be able to actually score a point in the Iron Bowl next year.

Roll Tide.

Strange. Apparently- it is not PRUDENT to insult a rival on your own website. Apparently-if Bammers had it their way-the Gestapo would pay us all a visit. Apparently-It is time for me to chime in and say a few things.

First, LSUJonno-if I didn’t hate LSU so much, I think that we would be friends.

Second, neither Alabama nor Auburn are a top 5 job. Pay-wise they are near the top. Recruiting-wise, we are both stellar. Bama, of course, gets the nod for being the banner carrier in Alabama because they are the name-sake of the state. However, both schools have issues with their fanbase. I would seriously have to give the nod to Auburn in this category. Alabama has searched long and hard for the Bear reincarnated. It has never happened. Since Paul Bryant left, there have been 7 headcoaches. In that same time, OUR “Cow” College has had three-now four. So, there really is no arguing that point. I’d have to say that Auburn would get the nod in the, “Who’s a better job”.

Alabama fans will throw a fit here. They will say I am bias. Well, no shit- I am. They will talk of championships and domination over Auburn. But, at the end of the day, 12 Championships, 10 in a row against Auburn, and for all of that domination, they hold a 5 game lead over us in head-to-head. Damn, I should know better than speak ill of that which is the “Crap-stone”.

by auskip07 on Apr 7, 2009 7:53 AM CDT up reply actions

the only thing that could possibly keep Alabama from being a "top" coaching job...

is the insane pressure cooker that our coaches continually find themselves in. Your number one reason why UA is not desirable is “probation, probation, probation” amd you ask if there has ever been an institution that has been investigated more often…

As a matter of fact, there is. Auburn.

To be fair, Auburn is far from the only school with more violation investigations than Alabama. Auburn is number 3 all-time on the violations list, in the nation. Alabama isn’t even in the top 25. http://blog.al.com/bn/2008/03/sec_no_2_for_most_ncaa_infract.html

And I love that you guys feel that Saban is just “a phone call away” from leaving Bama.

Fun fact: back when Saban was the head coach of the Toledo Rockets, a reporter asked him what his all-time dream coaching job would be. Without hesitation, Saban replied “The University of Alabama”.

So he’s coaching at his dream job, he has an unprecidented amount of power over a program, his fanbase loves him, and he’s being paid out the wazoo. His ideals, his ego, and his pocketbook are all happy. He isn’t going anywhere.

Meanwhile, Auburn just ran the best coach they’ve had since Shug out of town, to be replaced with some guy who was the worst of a bad division.

Look- I WANT Auburn to be strong. Clearly, I’m an Alabama fan, but I honestly, from my heart, want to see Auburn win every game they play as long as the other team isn’t wearing Crimson. I think when both programs are strong, it makes the Iron Bowl that much more amazing. Sure, I laughed a little this year at the 36-0 ass whipping, manhood taking beatdown that Auburn had to take, but honestly I’d rather have seen a close game that went down to the last second.

That’s why I hate to see Auburn heading this way.

Either way, be honest about it. Is Alabama as amazing a coaching job as it was back in the ’80’s? Absolutly not. Is it still a better job than 99% of schools out there? If you can handle the pressure inherrit in the position, absoolutly.

And I have a feeling that Saban can handle the pressure just fine =)

Football: Alabama-21, Auburn-6
Men’s Basketball: Alabama-7, Auburn-2
Women’s Basketball: Alabama-0, Auburn-4
Gymnastics: Alabama-6, Auburn-0
Baseball: Alabama-5, Auburn-3
Softball: Alabama-3, Auburn-0

Men’s Cross Country: Alabama-2, Auburn-6
Women’s Cross Country: Alabama-2, Auburn-0
Men’s Golf: Alabama-2, Auburn-3
Women’s Golf: Alabama-0, Auburn-6
Men’s Swimming: Alabama-2, Auburn-14
Women’s Swimming: Alabama-2, Auburn-5
Men’s Tennis: Alabama-1, Auburn-2
Women’s Tennis: Alabama-0, Auburn-0
Men’s Track and Field: Alabama-8, Auburn-8

hold up....
I could bang on these people all day, but let’s move on. I want to address why Alabama is not among the top five coaching jobs in the country and why they probably aren’t among the top five in the SEC. Here we go…

In the final analysis, Alabama’s head coaching job falls behind those at Florida, LSU, Georgia, Tennessee and Auburn.

then you say…

We are not justifying we are better

I get why would say that we aren’t in the top 5 in the country but you are in fact saying the Auburn job is better….but the fact ( and it is a fact even if you don’t want to believe it) was that when the Alabama job opened up, we had some pretty big names associated with it. When those guys went elsewhere (or stayed put) we were able to hire a guy with a proven track record of winning (SEC championships and a NC) When the Auburn job opened up…you were forced to hire a guy who’s track record was terrible…. If you want to say that the Alabama job falls behind that of Auburns….it just simply isn’t true. If it were…we wouldn’t have gotten Saban…and guys would have hired someone MUCH better than Chizik.

Here is what I don’t get… Barners are always throwing the fact that Bama fans can’t get over the past but all yall do is throw the past in our faces….if you want US to move on…guess what? YOU guys have to also..Sure 5 years ago it looked bleak in T-town. But now…the future is extremely bright.

The simple FACT is..ALABAMA just went to a SEC championship game AND played in a BCS game (doesn’t matter that we lost….getting there is the point)….the FACT is that ALABAMA just reeled in another #1 recruiting class ( BACK TO BACK) compared to Your #??? The FACT is that ALABAMA’s future looks MUCH brighter…. I know this is hard pill to swallow but the truth always is.

crap..can’t believe i got sucked into this dumb debate…

at least we have a future...

you guys can try to make this “text book” thing a big deal all you want but everyone knows it will do little to derail what Saban is doing. You know it…I know it…EVERYONE knows it.

ALABAMA leading the NCAA with infractions since 2001...

funny that you only go back to 2001 seeing as how you are third on the ncaa infractions list and that your six game win streak started the following year

Go back as far as you want

Bama doesn’t crack the all-time top 25 in major infractions. In any case, this was a great article and I’m looking forward to more quality work from Jay. He should receive some type of award for all the great work he puts into this blog. What a classy guy!

I think my facebook status should be...

…“is laughing at how obsessed with us the bammers are, spending this much time on our website.” Just look around YouTube. Any video that shows Auburn football against anybody, not just alabama — it can be AU/Florida, AU/LSU, AU/Tennessee, AU/UGA, AU/Nebraska, etc. — any video that shows Auburn football, there are twice as many posts from alabama fans who are trying to make themselves feel superior by looking up AU stuff and commenting on it. That’s sad, people. I don’t spend my time looking up alabama videos or posts or anything because I have no desire to associate with it. Yet you people continue to think you have something to prove to Auburn fans. We don’t care what you have to say. We’re never going to agree with you. So get over it. War Eagle!

What do an Auburn fan and a bammer have in common? (Neither of them ever attended that school in tuscaloosa).

Earth to you:

Everybody looks at other team’s websites. Plus, what do you think this post is about anyway?

The “you’re obsessed with us”…. “no, you’re obsessed with US” stuff is just downright ridiculous.

Bear is dead...

…..but let’s face it, he was the best to have ever coached the college game. Dang right I’m envious of Alabama’s tradition and championships. Be honest my Auburn friends – you are too! I wish we still had Bryant, Dye and Dooley.
Go Dogs.

1. Probation – Um…yeah, Bama has had their fair share of hard times but in case you forgot, Auburn is the 3rd most penalized team in college football history. Let’s not just talk about the last 15 years because it is convenient to the article (Barner logic). Bama isn’t even in the top 30 of most penalized teams of all time. http://blog.al.com/bn/2008/03/SECcheatinghall030908.jpg
2. Success – I would call 19 – 8 over the last 2 seasons pretty darn good. Considering we drummed the Barn 36 – 0 I would say we are headed in the right direction, too. We dropped 7 of the last 9 Iron Bowls, but the current trend appears to be that Bama is about to make a run of their own on consecutive IB wins. And please, Barners should never bring up coaching choices. 5 -19 is all I think I need to say.
3. The Mikes – 5 – 19
4. Bear – We celebrate our history because we have one. The Barn does not. Simply put, Bear Bryant is the greatest coach to have ever been on a college football field. He coached at Bama, not Auburn, and we celebrate his greatness by honoring his memory. Auburn has no coach worth mentioning in the same breath as Bryant and they never will.
5. #2 – Huh? #2? In what? Crow about your Barn athletic department – sociology, anyone? – but don’t talk about other sports in an article about football. In this state, there is, has been and always will be one team in this state – Alabama. Auburn will always be a distant #2. And if the Auburn coaching job is so prestigious, why do they have Gene Chizik (Mr. 5 – 19) as their current head coach?
