1st and Five: Games I'd Like to See Us Schedule Soon
Face it. With Jay Jacobs as AD, there are no gimmes. With the recent beat-down we've taken over his failure to secure UCLA next season, I guess we're left with nothing but a wish list for some strong OOC scheduling. And what a better topic for one of these threads. Simple enough. Give me your Top 5 games you'd like to see us schedule, either as a series or as a neutral site game. Par moi:
1) Miami: Call it payback for getting hosed by them in the final 1983 polls for the national championship. And because that wimpy Kickoff Classic matchup in August of 1984 didn't really settle anything, the convicts have been number one on my list for decades. Because they really have never had a serious rivalry with any team in the SEC. Because they were always tooo scared to join the SEC. Get a series with them! Jordan-Hare and wherever they play their home games now. We'll travel first!
2) Notre Dame: Come on! Aren't they on everyone's Christmas list? It's probably no coincidence that the two teams in CFB that I actually HATE are the first two on this dream schedule. Perhaps I'm just an equal opportunity offender, or I put my schedule where my mouth is. I know that the other team from Alabama couldn't beat 'em. or at least the Bear couldn't. Why not us? Since they don't want to ever play the quality teams from their own backyard (Ohio State, 5 times in 122 years, Michigan, less times than they've played Georgia Tech), why not give another team from the SEC a shot? Worked for the Vols a few years ago. Maybe Urban Meyer will remember us when he takes the reigns up there...
3) Southern Cal: Yes, again. Until we get it right. Home and home. We'll start out there again. Should have gotten our payback in Miami in January 2005. I'll even listen to them play Fight On 800 times in a single game again. Hey, I had to sit in front of them in the 1987 Citrus Bowl, so that's no small feat. These guys have had tooo easy a time on their last few trips east. I give them their props though. Under Pete Carroll, they'll play anyone, any where, and they're not too demanding on the terms. I bet they'd play us again. This should be Jacobs' first call.
4) Texas A+M: I don't really like these guys, and no, it has nothing to do with Jimmy Sexton making up those rumors that Tubs was heading to College Station a year ago. Nor does it have to do with that beating they put on us in the Cotton Bowl in Bo Jackson's last game as a Tiger. It has to do with the creepy fixation and obsession that they have with main rival Texas. Maybe it reminds me of what Auburn might look like with Alabama had we not been able to hold our own in the all-time series. Texas has owned A+M over the decades, and the Aggies are pretty sore about it. Let's play them in a preseason game in the Sugar Bowl. That venue would keep the crowd around a 50-50 split!
5) Oregon: I really like the Ducks and their program, and I've never been to Oregon, so it might make a good road trip. Especially to Autzen stadium, where despite it's size, is supposed to get really loud. That and we just don't play enough PAC-10 teams in my opinion. Who do we think we are, Tennessee? Actually, as I've said on here many times, I've really liked the pipeline that the PAC-10 and SEC has had going on this decade. And since we've already played two teams from that conference in the last 5 years, let's keep it going. I could easily substitute Cal or Washington in there as well.
Let's hear yours!!!

1) Miami: …Because they really have never had a serious rivalry with any team in the SEC…
Miami had a serious annual rivalry with Florida for 50 years. It ended when the SEC chose to play more conference games and UF decided to use its non-FSU nonconference games on mostly cupcakes to help finance the program.
Regardless, they all sound good, especially Oregon. Chip Kelly’s got a good thing going up there. A game with Clemson would be cool for the historical reasons too.
Not trying to take a jab at the Gators, I’m just curious… When is UF going to start scheduling some non-conference road games outside the state of Florida? How great would a Florida/Texas game in Austin be? Or Gators and Trojans in the Coliseum?

How about
Miami, Clemson, Penn State or Florida State.
I just love to hear Bobby Bowden whine when he gets beat by Auburn.
After we bought our way
out of the last FSU game I don’t see them taking up serious anytime soon.

University of Washington & Nebraska
I have been to several games at U-Dub and really enjoyed it (beautiful setting). Living in Seattle for a few years, I came to be a fan of them and would love to see the Tigers play them with a home and home.
For Nebraska, this one would be “smash mouth” v. “smash mouth” and may the best team win. A home & home with those guys would be fun too.
Several I'd like to see
1. Texas – Go big or go home, right? It would be nice to get payback for the lone blemish on our 1983 (shoulda-been) NC team. Plus, I want to go to Austin.
2. Notre Dame – Auburn is the only team to have won a national championship since 1950 that ND has never played. Let’s put an end to that. Auburn on NBC!
3. Troy – Why the hell not? Right down the road, they’re actually a solid football program, I don’t understand why we don’t play them more (other than maybe the idea of "If we’re gonna play a Sun Belt team, might as well play one we know we’ll beat).
4. Arizona State – Phoenix is one of my favorite locales in the country. They have had the hottest cheerleaders I’ve ever seen. How did their cheerleading squad get cut for racy pictures and I missed it (Links NSFW)? Well, that drops them down a couple of notches on my list…
I've got one foot on the platform, the other foot on the train
I'm going back to New Orleans, to wear that ball and chain
I definitely agree
with Troy. Both us and Bama should give them a shot.

AU-Texas
Actually we’ve gotten our revenge on them a couple times since the ’83 season.
1987: Auburn 31, Texas 3
1991: Auburn 14, Texas 10
But I agree, I would love to make it 3 or 4 in a row over the Longhorns.

If we’re gonna play a Sun Belt team, might as well play one we know we’ll beat
I think that was alabama’s mindset too… until ULM came along and ruined it for ’em. :)

I agree with Troy.
LSU plays an in state school every year, why not Auburn. We’ve got Troy and UAB and in 5-10 years we’ll have USA too.

2013 is their goal to be FBS
They’ll be FCS in 2011 and are Sun Belt Conference members.

In no particular order...
Oklahoma, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Penn State, Michigan, Georgia Tech, Clemson, Florida State, Texas, Texas Tech, Miami, Virginia Tech

1. BC – Most of my Family is from the area and alot are BC Alumni. My uncle has always given Auburn alot of respect for the Cotton Bowl game we played against them in the 80’s. He said Auburn could have killed them, but pulled on the reins. I want them Yankees to see what REAL College football is about, Not that weak ACC they play in.
2. GT – The back to back loses still leaves a bitter taste in my mouth. We have to beat those Nerds.
3. Any Big 10 Team – Show that the SEC is better during the season instead of just in a bowl game.
4. Oklahoma – Just to show them we should have been in Miami in 05.
5. FSU – Bring the rivalry back. We are too close to Tallahassee not to play them.
1) Texas
2) Miami
3) Nebraska
4) FSU
5) Michigan

1. GT – Bring back the Wreck Tech parade and the annual rivalry. Jay Jacobs you twit.
2. FSU – Again bring back the annual rivalry…..some great memorys of this game. Jay Jacobs you twit.
3. Texas – Give us a home and home every few years. Great national exposure and payback for Mack Browns poaching of coaches. Jay Jacobs you twit.
4. Meeeechigan – Again, home and home every few years. Also great national exposure and good Big 10 vs. SEC matchup outside of a bowl game. Jay Jacobs you twit.
5. USC – Ditto on the home and home every few years. National exposure and the chance for payback for the back to back losses we suffered a few years ago. Jay Jacobs you twit.
6. Miami – Just because I hate Miami. Jay Jacobs you twit.
7. Ohio State – It would be a good road trip for both fan bases. Jay Jacobs you twit.
8. Clemson – It would be like Elvis beating up one of his impersonators. Jay Jacobs you twit.
9. Syracuse – Yes I know they are down now…but they love to hate us (at least the older ones do) for the Sugar Bowl tie. I was there and damn were they pissed off (better than being pissed on although I was pretty drunk and may have actually pissed on one while relieving myself from the balcony). Jay Jacobs you twit.
10. Colorado – Again great road trip and if scheduled properly a great vacation for the family. Jay Jacobs you twit.
I would have gone to bammer if my grades hadn't been good enough to go to AU
1. yes
2. we tried to schedule them but they refused to do a home and home. maybe we could play em in the Dome.
3. no way
4. a&m could be interesting since they are essentially us in the state of texas.
5. yeah i like that matchup. Oregon is def one of my favorite teams to watch and the talent levels are pretty even and the Ducks have a great fanbase. i’d rather face them in a bowl game though that have to go play them in their stadium. few get out alive.
5 teams i’d like to see them play
1. Texas- my first game ever was the 87 season opener when Auburn destoryed the Horns. plus Texas is my favorite team to root for outside of the SEC.
2. Georgia Tech- my favorite oldschool rival…plus we need to get some revenge for those last 2.
3. Michigan- more than any other Big 10 team, i’d like to see the Tigers take on the Wolverines in a non-bowl game. AU in the Big House would be rad.
4. Nebraska
5. UCLA in the Dome….oh wait, nevermind
Play Cal Play Cal Play Cal
I’ve been longing for another SEC team, I love the natural clashes that develop. West – East, Liberal – Conservative, Urban – Rural, Pac-10 – SEC, Dry – Humid, Diverse – not
plus, given that both home territories are based in bowl country, we never get to play to each other. Also, my inner idealist says that by road tripping to each others homes, the oversimplifications and generalizations about one another would diminish and we’d arrive at a greater understanding of the entire country. Okay, all at once… awww…(admittedly, not gonna happen)
They're after our precious bodily fluids
Another good thread, WEA, and if I may contribute...
assuming I wanted what’s best for AU, my lineup would target recruiting…
1) Georgia Teck – Not sure about AU’s presence in ATL, but I know Bama and UGA both have some top notch talent out of that area over the past few years, why not stick your nose in some of that goodness? What better way to do that than to beat up on the home town college?
2) Texas – Always, always going to be top talent out of TX, and why not attempt to show Muschamp what he’s missing. Win, lose or draw, I don’t think he’d get the message, as he’s got a pretty good future there.
3) Texas A&M – Same as #2, but it pisses me off year in and year out that Fran and Sherman have gotten top notch talent from in state, and have absolutely no idea what to do with it. 5 star athletes go to A&M to play their last days of football, instead of hitting the next level like they would in the SEC.
4) WVU – I lost a lot of money on AU last year in this game, so I’d like to have a do over. Not much recruiting up there, but a good revenge factor here.
5) Miami – If nothing else, just to be down there and in the good graces of the HC at Northwestern High School (I think that’s the name) down there, which produces studs on a yearly basis.
I’d also throw in Troy, as some others have mentioned, just because I’d rather see AU and UofA play them instead of Georgia Southern and UT-Chattanooga. Good for the state, and good for in state recruiting, IMO.

I agree...
Barners and Bammers should schedule Troy every year until one of us loses. Call it a Alabama Cage Death Match or something equally cheesy. Would defintely be good for the state, which has four FBS schools, which ain’t too shabby for state this size.
by War Eagle Atlanta on May 12, 2009 2:37 PM CDT up reply actions
Yeah...
We could have a four team all-Alabama tournament, and the championship game could be played as the last regular season game and be called the Iron Bowl…
Seriously though, I think there’s a huge difference between playing Troy and playing UAB. You never find many diamonds in the rough at UAB, but Troy has always got one or two to speak of; Omar Hougabook (could just be a testament to how good Franklin is/was), Demarcus Ware, Leodis McKelvin, Osi Umenyiora, etc. Just seems like a good idea, and would definitely amp up either teams’ strength of schedule.
And yes, I definitely spelled Tech with a “k” above…

Isn’t that kind of a derogatory term used to describe Auburn fans?

FSU, FSU, FSU, FSU
I mean besides GT, FSU could seriously be considered our top non-conference rival, we have a pretty damn good standing series with them, heck we played em 18 times between 54’ and 90’ and we just kind of let it die, love to see a yearly home and home with them.
Oregon
I would love to see us play Oregon as my boss is a huge Ducks fan. He actually played there many years ago (we think it was without a helmet) But it would be great to give each other crap over a game like that.
Other than that, any team in the Pac 10 because I live near Seattle and we get those games on TV. I also like the Troy idea because in state and FSU because I hate them so much. Georgia Tech was a regular rivalry for a long time, we ought to be playing them every 3 or 4 years.
My Top 5
1) Notre Dame. I’ve just always wanted to see an AU/ND home-and-home in Auburn and South Bend. It would be a classic game against one of the biggest has-beens of college football.
2) UCLA. I hadn’t really thought about it before the recent scheduling debacle by our good friend Jay (sarcasm), but AU has yet to play the Bruins, so let’s schedule them.
3) Florida State. It would just be nice to renew that old rivalry from the ‘80s which the Tigers dominated.
4) Michigan State. Simply because I spent part of my time growing up near East Lansing and we haven’t played them since the ’38 Orange Bowl. People used to stare at our AU flag that we flew in our yard up there on game days like it was something from another planet lol.
5) Oklahoma. Payback for taking our spot in the ’05 Orange Bowl, and for beating us in the ’72 Sugar Bowl back when my dad went to AU (the only other Tiger-Sooner meeting).
Honorable mention: Ohio State, Miami, Texas, Nebraska (even though we just played NU in a bowl game, would be cool to play them again)

I have to add in
Tech too. That’s a neat rivalry that I, being born in 1986, didn’t get to experience (at least not in a good way). Something every Auburn fan should experience is beating Tech since they are one of our traditional rivals.

the top 5
1) Ohio State. They are my second favorite team besides Auburn.
2) Miami. That has always been a recruiting must for us, and it needs to get back that way.
3) Notre Dame. Just another team like uat living off the past.
4) Texas. I was too young to remember the last time we played them. It would be a good way to get our foot in the door with that talent rich state.
5) Oklahoma-USC tie. I would like to see the Tigers beat down either one of these teams.
Let's consider...
A round robin approach to each major conference, and an in state school. Then we could bring back the “Wreck Tech” game and hoopla with avengence!
So, the first year could look like this..
1.)Arizona State, insert your Pac-10 team here
2.)Troy
3.)Georgia Tech
4.)LA. Tech
50% of those OOC games would be a no brainer for National TV. Plus there is the extra exposure that recruits look for when choosing which school to attend/play for.
The next series would start the third season, could look like this..
1.)So. Cal. (again insert whichever Pac-10 team)
2.)UAB
3.)Clemson
4.)Oklahoma(insert BIG-12 except Iowa State…LOL)
Auburn has always had the heart to help the “little guy”. The Furmans of the world need to play a major school just for the economic influx. I mean 600K is a huge boost to these smaller schools. They will play the rest of the season and never see that in a single game. Plus the exposure helps there kids too. I truly don’t mind seeing one a year, that we “should win” and at the same time help them out. I can hear the roar now, but I’ll stick to my guns.
WAR EAGLE!
I like that LSU plays in-state schools...
I just wish that it was ONLY one per year. Rotate Tulane, La Tech, ULL and ULM.
I’d love to play A&M, Oregon, and like a Penn St. or Ohio State or Michigan.
I want to play USC, but I want it to be in a NC game.
