Auburn's Success Rests in the Hands of its Quarterback - Again.

With the calendar about to change to June, we are inching closer to the countdown of the 2009 football season. This year more than others, it feels like there hasn't been an off-season. Thanks to Gene Chizik and staff we've been treated to a new story each week. And so far, the news has been all good.

But now we shift into the prognostication part of the year where the preseason magazines begin hitting the shelves and web sites start weighing in on the SEC and the national championship races. Unlike last season, you'll be hard pressed to find someone pick Auburn at the top of the conference heap.  For that matter, it'll be tough to find them picked in the top half of the SEC West. That's not much of a news flash for Tiger fans.

Will Auburn be improved over last year? Can they become bowl eligible? Most of these questions will be answered by one position - quarterback. As Chizik makes his way around the Southeast speaking to numerous Auburn clubs, it has become apparent from his remarks that he saw the same thing during spring drills that we all saw during A-Day - his team still doesn't have an answer for the most important position on the field.

"The position has not been won -- that's the main point of emphasis," Chizik said. "We've got some young guys who will come in and challenge for the job. Certainly the ones who have been on campus have an advantage of 15 days anyway, but the quarterback situation probably won't be solved until right before the season starts."

For the first time, Chizik said last week that heralded incoming freshmen Tyrik Rollison and Clint Moseley will challenge incumbent Kodi Burns and Neil Caudle for the starting role. That's good news if you are a freshman, but bad if you expect to win in the SEC.

Do you feel like it's Groundhog Day all over again? Obviously, offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn is not happy with the progress made so far. Early in the year, Chizik seemed confident in naming a quarterback by midway through spring practice. Now he's pushing the deadline to late August. It begs of the old saying, "you can't make chicken salad out of chicken _ _ _ _."

Look for the genius of Gus Malzahn to be tested early. It's hard to imagine Burns improving enough over last season to be much of an asset in this new offense. The wildcard in all of this is Chris Todd, who's again recovering from injury. Does anyone really believe the coaching staff will have the guts to put him again?

That leaves Auburn with three unproven commodities in Caudle, Rollison and Moseley. First year quarterbacks rarely make for unforgettable seasons. So back to our question - How will Auburn do? It's hard to imagine Chizik's first team winning more than seven. My guess is Caudle will get the nod against Louisiana Tech. Like Tommy Tuberville's debut against Appalachian State in 1999, look for Auburn to win a close one against Derek Dooley's bunch.

Beyond that, it's anyone's guess where this team goes from there. Lucky for us, Athlon's, Lindy's, The Sporting News and Sports Illustrated already have it figured out. Let the predictions begin!

If you live in the East Alabama/West Georgia area, you still have a chance to hear and meet Coach Chizik. He'll be speaking at the Columbus/Phenix City Auburn Club on May 20th. The cost is $20 for members and $50 for non-members. For more information, visit the club's web site at cpcauburnclub.com.

The quarterback is the key for every football team.

You cannot win without a “positive” from that position. It appears that Gus is not convinced he can win with the spring trio. You are then left with two clear choices. Start a true freshman if he has the most upside, or go with vanilla and try not to screw up. I hope Tyrik proves to be the one with the most potential and they start him and take lumps this year and be loaded next year. Rollison looked great in the U.S. Army game with little prep time and little time with that team. He is probably the foundation guy. I am not convinced Tyrik cannot help this team win more than 8 this year.

Amendment!

I think I read that Gene does not plan to sign a quarterback in 2010! That screams “I think we have our guy!” It certainly did not seem to be one the guys from A-Day.

Jay...

Being a little redundant aren’t we?

and web sites start weighing in on the SEC and the national championship races.

That’s right, rest-of-the-country…I went there.

About this…

For the first time, Chizik said last week that heralded incoming freshmen Tyrik Rollison and Clint Moseley will challenge incumbent Kodi Burns and Neil Caudle for the starting role.
It was almost a year ago to the day that Les Miles said this exact same thing about Jordan Jefferson having a shot to win the starting job over Andrew Hatch and Jarrett Lee. My buddies and I said “Surely he’s just saying this to help recruiting, you know like freshman have a chance to play right away.” But boy were we wrong, and it showed. I hope you guys have more success at the QB position than we did last year.

Being a little redundant aren’t we?

Not all SEC champions get to play for the national title, unfortunately, as many readers here know. :-(

If Tyrik is our guy, I think it will show in fall camp and Malzahn will make the right decision.

True

But ever since 2004, Every time there’s been a tie for one or two of the spots in the BCS involving the SEC, the tie has always gone to the SEC:

2005: USC and Texas were both the only unbeatens.
2006: Florida over Michigan
2007: LSU over Va. Tech, USC, etc.
2008: Florida over Texas, Texas Tech, Penn State, etc.

CLOSE LAST YEAR WITHOUT CHIZIC,GUS AND TED

YES LAST YEAR WAS A DISASTER..5-7. WE COULD HAVE BEEN 3-9 WITH TENNESSEE AND MISS ST LOSES (3-2 AND 14-12 WINS). ON THE OTHER HAND, WE WERE WITHIN A PLAY OR TWO OF WINNING THE VANDERBILT, LSU, ARKANSAS AND GEORGIA GAMES AND LED WEST VIRGINIA. AND, IF THE FIELD GOAL THAT WAS GOOD COUNTED AGAINST ALABAMA, THE SCORE AT THE HALF WOULD HAVE BEEN 10-3. WE WERE CLOSE TO BEING 9-3 OR 10-2. THERE WAS A FINE LINE FOR BEING 3-9 AND 9-3 OR 20-2 IN 2008.

Uhh..yeah

3 “comfortable wins” – ULM, USM, Tenn.-Martin
3 “blowout losses” – UAT, WVU, Ole Miss
2 “close wins” – MSU, UT
4 “close losses” – LSU, Vandy, Arkansas, Georgia

The close losses really could have gone either way. What part of this don’t you understand?

Edit

The close losses games could have gone either way. Not trying to say we had the MSU and UT games in the bag by any stretch of the imagination.

I've got to agree with you on this one...

There was indeed, only a few plays separating AU from 2 or 3 more wins (e.g. LSU’s final TD drive, whatever that hell that was against Vandy, etc). The MSU game was over once the FG was kicked, so you could feasibly chalk that one up to a blowout if you wanted to (116 yards fo total defense is total domination even if the O can’t get it done). Also, with the Ole Miss game, I was in attendance, and AU was still in the game until about 6 minutes left in the game, so even though the scoreboard showed a 10 point difference, AU had their opportunities to win that game.

On the other hand, I do feel that UT played a better game than AU did and probably should have won that game, but at the end of the day, you take the win, no matter what form it comes in.

So, yes, had all the chips fallen in your favor as it did for the UT game, then 9 or 10 wins was not out of the question, but in this sport, you have to create your own luck, and they at least have the support staff to get the players in a position to do so this year.

Haha

The Jags had a similar problem. Our first five losses were by seven points or less. It makes you sit back and think of what the season could have been.

If not Burns

I think that Caudle may very well be the starter this year with Burns getting heavy subs in red zone and “wildcat” situations. I really don’t think Coach Chizik will start a freshman will all the “newness” going on already. I think he will go with Caudle to provide stability and leadership.

by dbelkau on May 18, 2009 12:00 PM CDT reply actions

I disagree about Chizik not starting a freshman...

because there is too much “newness” already. To me, this seems like the perfect time to start a freshman, especially if he turns out to be the most talented of the quarterbacks. The system is new to all the players, not just the freshman. Unless Kodi or Neil are light years ahead of one of the freshman at this point, I think there is a good chance we see a freshman playing significant minutes at QB this fall.

I am all for letting the best players play, regardless of experience. Whoever the coaches choose has my full support.

not only "newness" of the plays...

There is something to be said for getting used to the speed of the game. It is a rare freshman who can adjust to not only new plays, but probably more importantly, the speed of the college game.

I think qb by committee is the way to go.

by Zandor435 on May 18, 2009 1:59 PM CDT up reply actions

Players can not get used to the speed of the game sitting on the bench.

I have to respectfully disagree with the QB by committee approach. I have never seen that work successfully for an entire season. I say pick your guy and see how he does. If he struggles then make a change, but to go the entire year without a true leader at qb is asking for trouble.

by Jumpn_JackFlash on May 18, 2009 2:46 PM CDT up reply actions

Speed

I completely agree with your take on the speed of the game. However, I cannot go for a quarterback by committee. The adage, “If you have two quarterbacks, you have no quarterback”, I think has proven true too many times. I hope the kid gets some snaps. I hope that there is some situational subbing at the QB slot. I just hope there is a concrete “starter”.

by dbelkau on May 18, 2009 4:46 PM CDT up reply actions

I don't think Zandor meant QB by committee as in equal reps.

I think he meant more like the role Tebow played in 2006 or Perrilloux played in 2007. Both of those teams have crystal footballs.

by LSU Jonno on May 19, 2009 8:03 AM CDT up reply actions

Understood

I gotcha. I am also in favor of using multiple QB’s if the situation calls for it. I guess the term “QB by committee” just scares the hell out of me at first read. You can’t argue with the success of those other teams.

by dbelkau on May 20, 2009 10:31 AM CDT up reply actions

true

Well said. It is new to all concerned. I also believe in playing the best player. I think the ability to lead is a crucial talent at QB, easily as important as physical tools. I’m not sure a freshman can provide that. However, like you, I will support whomever the staff selects. War Eagle!

CGC

said that this year would be a year to build a foundation…..much like what he was doing at Iowa St……but with less talent there. He started alot of freshman at IS and I believe he will do the same here. The first year may be rough….get Tyrik his experience….let him start and then hit all cylinders by the end of the season going into 2010….we have almost all of the O-Line back next year as seniors with more recuits coming. A bunch of talented recievers this year……lets get them the experience…win some games during the process and watch the explosions next year!

I've seen good TEAMS beat teams with great individuals.

If Gus Wants to...

Start a veteran, I think Kodi is the way to go. He should have better mechanics by this season, and offers the scrambling ability to make plays with his feet.

Start a freshman, Tyrik Rollison is the way to go. He is most likely the future of this team. Like Indytiger said above, get him the snaps in his freshman year… who knows, while freshman quarterbacks don’t always do great, sometimes you get one that does… Pat White, Chad Henne…

Tyrik

I think that if Chizik is smart he will first and foremost let Malzahn choose his own QB because he knows best. Secondly it would buy him a lot of room for error if he started Tyrik and let him win 6 or 7 games this season but show signs of an electric future. I just hope Tyrik is big enough to play in the SEC this year.

football season

i think that the qb position is not as important as people makes it out to be bama has been using queers for years and they always have a decent qb i think we need a 2 rb backfield i think the option is the best way to go in the sec the speed we have at running back would work real good and using 2 running backs recruits would want to come cause they would get playing time so that would be maybe top 10 rbs in recruits and defences would have to cheat up on the line so that would allow not great but decent wide receivers to learn and become good and our defence is always good so they just need to hit hard if it gets a penalty so be it one good hit on a gay qb like bama uses and the rest is easy

We have all heard it....

he can throw it a mile but has no touch, doesn’t make good decisions, awkward throwing motion, not smart enough for the complicated offense, can’t learn the plays. Is all of this criticism for Burns justified? Wait a minute my bad that wasn’t for Burns that was what was being said about Jason Campbell before 2004. I am not saying that Burns will turn out to be as good as Campbell did in 2004 but what I am saying is give the kid a chance to benefit from being coached by somebody other than Franklin or Ensminger. Everyone seems to forget that Burns has had 3 different OC’s and QB coaches in 2 years (again that sounds alot like Campbell). I am not ready to annoint him as the 2009 starter but I am not about to write him off, as many here have done, either.

I would have gone to bammer if my grades hadn't been good enough to go to AU

by Todd92 on May 20, 2009 11:29 AM CDT reply actions

No write- offs

I’m not writing Burns off at all. I agree with the similarities to Campbell. I am simply going on what I have heard from reputable sources about Caudle’s development compared to Burns’ at this stage. They may be wrong. I want whomever is most qualified to play the position to play the position. I’ll support whomever is under center without reservation.
