SEC-ACC Fantasy Scheduler

It's no secret that no conference takes more crap about the strength of their out of conference (OOC) scheduling than does the SEC. It's to be expected, given the strength of the intra conference competition. We have plenty of high caliber teams to play without straying too far from Dixie. And it's no secret that the key to a future playoff might entail all BCS conference schools being required to play one or two OOC BCS teams each year, in an attempt to balance out inequities in scheduling that are found in every conference. With the thread two weeks ago about about teams we'd like to see Auburn schedule, I started to wonder about which teams in the conference actually do have a permanent game with a OOC BCS school. It's not as many as you might think.
In the SEC, the following rivalries qualify:
- Florida--Florida State
- Georgia--Georgia Tech
- Kentucky--Louisville
- S. Carolina--Clemson
That leaves 8 teams without one: Alabama, Arkansas, Auburn, LSU, Tennessee, Ole Miss, Miss State, and Vanderbilt. Notice a trend above? All the schools are from the ACC, with the exception of Big East Louisville. Country Cousins, indeed.
Let's take a look at the ACC: the three teams above are covered, but the only other ACC team with a OOC BCS rivalry is Maryland, who has significant history with West Virginia. That also leaves 8 teams left: Miami, VA Tech, North Carolina, NC State, Virginia, Boston College, Wake Forest, and Duke. With each conference sharing so much history and rivalry, it's natural to pair them up as dance partners in this big CFB hoedown, perhaps under the following terms:
- Initially, teams will be matched together based on their historic rankings in college football--except where historic rivalry already exists.
- Series term will be one senatorial term--six years--home and home. This should be long enough to find out if you have sparks flying and a good rivalry. Then you rotate to play another school.
- With both conferences participating in this round robin of sorts and with every team in the conferences now playing one OOC BCS game, perhaps a trend might develop with other conferences, facilitating a future playoff.
So, who we got?
Alabama--Miami: Every SEC team would probably want first shot at Miami, the one school we all would've loved to watch struggle to win so many MNCs in our back yard, but Alabama gets first shot. Florida would have a historical claim on the Canes, but they're tied up with that former girls' school from Tallahassee. (I wonder if the Gators would trade the Noles to us?)
Tennessee--North Carolina: A 31-game history exists between these two neighbors, but they haven't played in almost 50 years. Could everything old be new again? Try it and see!
LSU--VA Tech: A recent home and home in 2002 and 2007 showed the potential to be a really good series, even though I think a better matchup would be between VT and Auburn. We'll get our chance with the Hokey Pokies soon enough.
Auburn--Boston College: Actually, a 3- games history exists between the schools--2 pre-war games and the 1982 Tangerine Bowl win for us (was Flutie playing then?) Although we'd have to travel quite a bit every other year, can you think of any cooler venue than Boston in the fall? Me neither.
Ole Miss--Virginia: Absolutely no history between these two schools, so no better time to get something started. The Rebels have only ever played 19 games against ACC schools, so let's push them into the pool!
Arkansas--NC State: Again, no history whatsoever between these teams. Arkansas' old Southwest Conference affiliation pretty much kept them off the Atlantic coast. They've only played 8 games ever against ACC foes.
Miss State--Wake Forest: Isn't it intriguing that the bottom of the pack from each conference has virtually no experience in playing teams from the other? The Bulldogs have only played 28 games against the ACC and none against the school named Wake Forest that is no longer located in Wake Forest, NC.
Vanderbilt--Duke: Who didn't already have this matchup penciled in? The Caboose Bowl. These guys were made for each other like ketchup and french fries. As a matter of fact, I make a motion that we just go ahead and keep this game permanent. Seems both schools thought the pairing inevitable, too. They've played their whole 11 game series the last 22 years.
For what it's worth, if you remove South Carolina from the equation because they used to be a member of the ACC, the top 5 SEC schools in number of games against the ACC are 1) Georgia, 2) Florida, 3) Auburn 4) Tennessee and 5) Vanderbilt. Naturally, these numbers are skewed because a lot of the games were against Georgia Tech, who used to be in the SEC but is now in the ACC, and every game against them by a SEC team is considered to be against an ACC team by CFB Data Warehouse.

Oh, yes!
…..Flutie most definitely played against Auburn in the 1982 Tangerine Bowl! The final score doesn’t really display how bad a butt-whipping it was, either. The Auburn wishbone carved Boston College up like a smoked bird. The score was 33-10, then Pat Dye went to his patented “prevent” defense. Flutie engineered two 4th quarter drives, for TDs and two-pointers. Final score: 33-26. It wasn’t that close…
……I voted for BC, mainly because the idea of taking a trip to the cool north and eating a huge lobster sounds pretty good, right now. That, and I’ve actually got some fresh collards that I’ll start stewing pretty soon, for a Memorial Day cook-out feast!
Acid…I disagree with you and feel that the game did get close. We did go ahead 33-10 and the AU fans(me included) went into full party mode. I kept pointing out that the little BC sophomore QB was a gamer and if we didn’t keep the pressure on, they could come back. BC was driving to go ahead in the 4 th qtr when we finally stopped them.
We Would Love To Play the Tigers
Come on up to Boston! I went to the Auburn-Arkansas home game last year and was not disappointed with the game day atmosphere. We do things a little differently up north, but it would be a cool series nonetheless.
It’s a win for BC too as we don’t get down to Alabama much at all.
Tenn Vs. Va Tech
Makes all the sense in the world, with the game played on a neutral site at the Bristol Motor Speedway.
i make adequate look good
Seems I've heard that proposed before...
What was the big hangup with getting it done?

What about 'Wreck Tech'?
Oh C’mon! What other ACC will do other as an Auburn opponant than Georgia Tech? I don’t care if they play Georgia or not, I don’t want to see any other ACC team than the “Yaller Jackets” on the ticket (though I’d insist on the Georgia Dome for a home and home series – Bobby Dowd is the pits).
Couldn't agree more with you......
Tech has always been a great rival and there is so much history involved that its a shame that it has faded in younger peoples knowledge of AU. Needs to be a true home and home though……and I would want to play in Bobby Dodd.
I would have gone to bammer if my grades hadn't been good enough to go to AU
For what its worth....
if I had to choose someone, outside of the Yellow Jackets, I would have to choose the Hokies. I doubt I would ever make the trip to Boston were it BC. Having been to Boston on a couple of occasions, NO THANK YOU, the city is one of the most expensive in the country to visit and it is not the most hospitable either. Va Tech is not only a quality program and would boost our OOC more each year than BC, it is also a relatively easy destination, area is hospitable, very scenic, and it doesn’t cost $300 bucks a night for an average hotel room.
I would have gone to bammer if my grades hadn't been good enough to go to AU
We're assuming...
for the sake of argument that you can only afford ONE of these regularly scheduled games per season. If we had two, we might be able to convince GT and Clemson to take us up again. Even so, I doubt that they would. That would probably be too tough on Tech—each year having two of the top teams from the SEC. One would have to be a rotator, which would be fine for me.

Not desperate to see Clemson on a regular basis.....
its a nice campus and area but I have never cared much for Clemson football. I voted for Va Tech. I understand the pretext of only one team from each conference having the annual home and home. But, given this is just a wish list, I wish for the home and home against Ga Tech above all other OOC because of its history and tradition. WE GOTTA GREASE THE TRACKS DAMNIT!
I would have gone to bammer if my grades hadn't been good enough to go to AU
You'd be pissed, too...
if you had to walk in from Loachapoka!

unc or wfu
I went to high school in North Carolina, so any of those schools would be great for me. I hate carolina and wake the most.
I REALLY hate carolina. They’re like bammers without having the actually reasons for being entitled.
Two points
This is a good list, and there are additional reasons for a couple of the matchups you have proposed:
1. Ole Miss-Virginia works from a campus scenery standpoint (literal campus scenery, that is, not metaphorical campus scenery, where Ole Miss wins, hands down). It’s debatable how good the games would be, but the atmosphere in William Faulkner’s hometown and “Mr. Jefferson’s academical village” would be tremendous. (I’m a little surprised you didn’t snap up the Cavaliers for Auburn, though, seeing as how George Petrie spent his undergraduate years in Charlottesville before bringing the gridiron game to the Plains. Petrie’s Virginia connection is what led him to select orange and blue as Auburn’s colors.)
2. Arkansas and N.C. State share something in common: both were coached by Lou Holtz. Given the shameless homerism Holtz displays on ESPN towards teams he used to coach (particularly Notre Dame and South Carolina), it would be interesting to watch how he reacted to this one.
Go 'Dawgs!
I think...
Granny Holtz would suffer an embolism with that matchup!
Good point about Virginia. We owe homage to Petrie and the Virginia Cadavers.

I voted Va. Tech
2004 Sugar Bowl redux!!
I've got one foot on the platform, the other foot on the train
I'm going back to New Orleans, to wear that ball and chain
I would like to see..
….you guys schedule the North Avenue Trade School every year!!! Clemson/Auburn would be cool too. I would gladly wear an Auburn hat to both games!
UGA’s out of conference schedule includes the ACC, Big 12 and PAC 10…..not too shabby. Only 1 cream-puff all year – Tenn Tech.
That's the thing...
Until it’s mandated, no one is going to take on two full-time OOC BCS opponents each year, and I doubt that No. Ave Vo-Tech will give you guys up for us anytime soon. Same with Clempzin and South Kakalaki.
But if TWO games are mandated, we have a better shot. I doubt that would happen, though!

Another good Home/Home series...
…would be Auburn against Texas A&M, or better yet Texas.
I really like this idea but for one thing...
What makes a BCS team? Personally I reckon it is a team that one would expect could be in the top 25 five years from now. That would replace teams like Duke for teams like Utah.
No one really cares if Mississippi State plays 2 OOC BCS teams. Frankly those games are not likely to be good. Boise State would be better, if only for the novelty and lack of cow bells.
Currently a national championship contender plays 3-4 teams that had a chance at the top 25 at the start of the year. The SEC gets those in conference, maybe requiring one more OOC depending on the inter conference play.
