SPUAT Fought The Law... And The Law Won - Again!

Mal_moore_medium
Turn out the lights... The party's over?

Anytime Alabama loses 21 football games in a day, it's not an entirely bad week. Yesterday's sanctions levied by the NCAA on Alabama are being hailed by many as too lenient. Personally, they feel about right. A couple of scholarships taken away would have put a cherry on top; but don't be fooled - these sanctions will leave a lasting mark on this once proud program.

With Thursday's punishment, Alabama is now undeniably the most corrupt athletic program in the country over the past 15 years and ranks just below SMU as the most maligned college football program in NCAA history. The punishment is a major embarrassment to all Alabama alumni and earns their school a reputation that will be around for years to come.

What effect do the sanctions have on the Auburn-Alabama rivalry? Essentially none. Both schools will line up against each other the day after Thanksgiving and the happenings of yesterday will be the last thing on either team's mind. But there is one caveat to all of this. The much dreaded repeat offender status remains and that could have a huge effect on the future of the Alabama football program.

It's widely believed that the NCAA continues to snoop around the Gadsden area looking for more violations by Alabama boosters. As much as Paul Finebaum tries to down play the story, it's not going away. Much like USC, this is a cloud that got much darker yesterday and is likely to stay above the Mal Moore Athletic Complex for several years to come. It's a dangerous situation for Alabama officials and one that could have devastating consequences if proven true.

The coming months will be interesting around the Tuscaloosa campus. What are the Vegas odds on Mal Moore surviving past the end of this calendar year? Expect to see Moore's retirement announced in the weeks ahead. While he had no direct role in this case, he ultimately will be held responsible as head of Alabama Athletics. May I suggest Bob Bockrath as a suitable and capable replacement?

As of today, Alabama becomes the first SEC school to lose to Louisiana-Monroe in consecutive seasons. Now I don't care who you are, that's funny. Come to think of it, they may be the only SEC team to ever lose to a Louisiana directional school. But I digress.

There's not much else to say about the story. It's what it is. Much more important to Auburn fans is how summer workouts are going, how the freshmen are getting acclimated and who the quarterback will be. Some Alabama fans like to say Auburn people are obsessed by the story. I'd say it's more amusement than anything else.

Our sympathies go out today to the family of Auburn Swim Coach Richard Quick who passed away on Wednesday. Quick will be remembered as one of the top swim coaches in NCAA history. His battle with cancer inspired the entire Auburn family. Even in his absence this past season, his spirit was an inspiration to the Auburn men's team who captured the 2009 NCAA National Championship.

"Richard's passing leaves a tremendous void, not only in the swimming community and the Auburn family, but to those individuals who he touched the most," said Tiger Interim Coach Brett Hawke said. "It would be in Richard's greatest honor to not dwell on his loss, but to celebrate his life and the characteristics he embodied, which were his perseverance, compassion and his humanity."

What boggles the mind is...

…..that Bama now has a losing SEC record since the league split into divisions. By my unofficial count, they stand at 69 wins, 73 losses since 1991. This includes losing records against South Carolina, Tennessee, Florida, LSU, Arkansas, and Auburn. Wow.

……Forfeits seem to be the NCAA stick of choice, lately. Used to be, forfeits only came into play when the school knowingly played an ineligible player. Mississippi State had to cough up 3 years worth of wins in the 1970s, and Bama had the Langham/Stallings deal in 1993. Now, the NCAA doesn’t want to mess with the almighty TV dollar…

……My question is, what happens to the 2007 Alabama/FSU game in Jacksonville? If both schools have to forfeit all of their victories for that year, who wins that game? Does the NCAA flip a coin?

by Acid Reign on Jun 12, 2009 5:15 AM CDT reply actions

I could be wrong but...

I think vacating wins is different than forfeiting games. As I understand it, their win total will decrease but their loss total will not increase. If Alabama beat you during the 05-07 time span then you will still have a loss on your record, but Alabama will not have a win on theirs. It has to be this way otherwise this ruling could possibly effect who should have won the SEC East or West those years. This way it stops the controversy at Alabama instead of spilling it over to the rest of the conference.

So if you added losses to Alabama as a result of this, Acid, then Bama likely still has a winning record, although it is very close.

Best quote I’ve heard from this:

Well, at least Alabama doesn’t have to vacate any wins over Auburn…

Classic. I’ll add that they didn’t have to vacate a win over LSU either…

Vacating Wins

Maybe I am in the minority here, but I think that the punishment fits the crime. While most Auburn Folks are whining (see any comment section on AL.com), I think that lost wins is pretty important. Jay brings up a good point about LA Monroe. That would sting me if I was a Alabama fan. Losing wins will make Shula’s 10 win season non-exisitant. Prothro and his “catch” (which has godlike status in T-Town) lost that game to Southern Miss. Brodie and DeMeco Ryan while having very good careers at Alabama won very few games.

Oh well… at least the SEC is done with this mess and can move on. Until something else happens, which we know it will. :)

I know that no one will remember that Alabama lost those games, unless you are looking in books or on NCAA websites. But the players know it, and that side of it sucks for players that were not involved.

If you are a War Damn Eagle, you can War Damn anything.

they didn't lose it.

Y’all need to review the definition of vacated wins on this website. I think many on here are mistaken. Southern Miss, and all the other schools who lost to Bama during that period of time still have a loss, it’s just that Bama does not get credit for the win.

I would be smiling if i was UA

It dosent effect / Affect (not sure which is correct) Their future games its essentially just record book stuff for a school that is already padded in that area. maybe i dont understand it (if its more serious) But like i said i would be smiling over the punishment

As a Bama fan

I couldn’t care less. We gained no competitive advantage from playing these players, and the games were decided on the field. Anyone celebrating a “win” over Bama as a result of these sanctions is humorous to me.

I agree

That does seem a lil weak. To celebrate now because the NCAA took away alabama’s win over your team. Just glad Auburn doesn’t have to do that.

I think

Bama fans are the ones celebrating. I’m just glad I dont have to hear about it anymore.

I don't understand that sentiment

Alabama did gain a competitive advantage by playing players that were ineligible. You have to infer that the players that were eligible weren’t playing because they weren’t as good as the players that were deemed ineligible. Therefore, ineligible players > eligible players = competitive advantage.

by AuditDawg on Jun 12, 2009 11:56 AM CDT up reply actions

In the same sense...

How your 2004 players gained a competitive advantage by receiving free class credits for no work at all, just so they could remain eligible to play football?

by SanFranDude12 on Jun 13, 2009 12:18 PM CDT up reply actions

When did Georgia do that in 2004?

Can you fill me in? It may have happened, but for whatever reason I don’t remember. I think you’re mistaking Georgia for Auburn with the Sociology thing that came up.

Incorrect.....

the course was considered incredibly easy….but was that way for all students not just student atheletes. No preferential treatment was given to atheletes to keep them eligible. Get your facts str8 left coast dude.

by Todd92 on Jun 15, 2009 12:14 PM CDT up reply actions

That is flawed, circular logic

The violation the players committed gave them no competitive advantage, yet allowing them to play gives the team a competitive advantage?

by CJackson on Jun 14, 2009 10:58 PM CDT up reply actions

I'll be Surprised....

If The Bammers don’t come running to comment for this statement alone,

With Thursday’s punishment, Alabama is now undeniably the most corrupt athletic program in the country over the past 15 years and ranks just below SMU as the most maligned college football program in NCAA history. I'd be more surprised

if an Auburn blog DIDN’T make this statement. It’s all opinion anyway. Let’s at least agree to wait out the whole USC thing before we declare anyone “most corrupt”. I have a feeling (hope?) that USC may have some dark clouds forming over them as we speak.

Again i agree...

With that USC thing. I don’t think the NCAA is through when them by a long shot. Everybody keeps saying that alabama pulled out all of the NCAA’s teeth the last go around but i believe they’ve still got quite a bite. Don’t be surprised to see the NCAA go after USC in a big way. What with all the Reggie Bush evidence and now the basketball program pay-outs. I think its gonna get really ugly on the west coast.

by Paratiger on Jun 12, 2009 9:07 AM CDT up reply actions

Either way

the title “most corrupt” wont matter too much when football season comes. If you all keep recruting they way you do it dosent matter.

A dark cloud maybe forming...

But no rain is in the forecast.

As much as I’d love to see USC slammed by the NCAA it won’t happen. It appears only the programs below the Mason-Dixon line (Alabama, FSU, Oklahoma, and yes even Auburn) are the programs of whom the NCAA “makes an example of”.

USC… as long as Pete Caroll is urinating, Myles Brand will continue drinking it from a golden cup.

Vacating wins for one team.....

does not mean an amended win loss record for the opponent of that vacated win. That team still shows the loss. That is the major difference between Vacated and Forfeited. As to the punishment…..standing alone as an individual incedent the punishment is way over board, however the incedent does not stand alone as they were within the repeat offender time frame. Having said that I think the punishment is ample as it is (yes it would have been fun to remind the bammers of lost scholarships). If the NCAA investigations in Gadsden and Mobile turn up any dirt at all the Bama program will be crippled for a long long time……I for one hope this does not take place…..let me rephrase that I hope that they are innocent and do not get more sanctions. If they are guilty then they deserve what they get. I hope though that they are innocent and they do not further damage the Ironbowl and the SEC. As far as Bama being the most corrupt……easy to argue but still arguable. At least the bammers get to hear what they had been giving AU fans for the past 50 years while they were cheating and couldn’t be touched by the NCAA at least not until the B’ar died. And lastly Mal Moore should direct all of his players and coaches to “Keep it down Home Cuz…..know what I mean”.

I would have gone to bammer if my grades hadn't been good enough to go to AU

Whats going to happen

…..when Mal Moore is forced to leave alabama. Are they going to put another corrupt a.d., named Dave Hart in charge You better believe it. It’s the bama way. You know, i’m happy with the 3yr probation because when “gadsden” hits the fan they wiil be screwed. There’s no telling. They may have already recieved the letter from ncaa. Who knows. Alabama does. The worst I ever expected......

out of the textbooks was a loss of a couple of scholarships for a year or two and that was considering the contempt that Bama has shown towards the NCAA in the past. As I said…….the punishment recieved is fair and maybe even a little harsh for the crime unless you consider the repeat offender status…..what UA cannot afford is another transgression over the next five years and that can’t make you comfortable considering your university hasn’t been able to put together 5 years without a scandle in quite a while. Spin away yourself.

Hmm?

Oh I’m sorry, I was busy watching Trent Richardson highlights.

Well with Mal Moore on his way out and a new regime of control coming form people like Nick Saban I don’t think we have to worry about rogue boosters that much these days. Of course Rivals message boards will say differently.

I’m just glad this wasn’t a major infraction you know? I ‘m just glad my school hasn’t committed a top five amount of major infractions.

They take the record book wins away, for the record, I was there I saw the score and what a media guide says can’t really change “what actually happened”

To talk trash?

I also came to tell jokes

So theres this priest with a church in a town next to a river. One day the river floods and the church is in danger.

When the water gets waist high a man comes by with a boat and tells the Priest, “Father hop in! It’s only gunna get worse!”

Priest says, “It’s okay my son. I will stay here with the lord.” And he prayed. Soon the water forced him to the attic and another boat came by.

“Father hop in. You’re gunna drown!”

“Don’t worry my son. the lord will take care of me.” Then the flood worsened and he was forced on to the roof where he continued to pray. The thrid boat came by.

“Father I can’t come back! You have to get in NOW!”

“My son the lord will look after me.” so the water rises and the priest drowns. On his way up to heaven, he is PISSED. The priest marches past the pearly gates and walks straight up to God.

“What the hell man? I was praying my ass off down there. Why didn’t you save me?”

God looks at him, “Well I sent three boats, dumbass.”

Boosh

Please enlighten me

I have not heard of these Gadsden rumors. Could someone please give me a CliffsNotes version?

by decemberist on Jun 12, 2009 2:28 PM CDT reply actions

Sure, here goes....

David Icke’s -BBC reporter- claims that humanity is actually under the control of dinosauroid-like alien reptiles who must consume human blood to maintain their human appearance.

“Evidence” goes from Sumerian tablets describing the “Anunnaki” (which he translates as “those who from heaven to earth came”), to the serpent in the Biblical Garden of Eden, to child abuse, fluoridation, and the genealogical connections between the Bush family and the House of Windsor.

Icke theorizes that the reptilians came here from the constellation Draco. Like most conspiracy theories, falsification of Icke’s hypotheses is nearly impossible, but Icke continues to sell books and give speaking engagements based on concepts ranging from the New Age to his political opinions.

Mal Moore's statement:
This case involves a failure in an isolated aspect of the program, and there is neither evidence nor allegations of other NCAA violations. No head coaches or assistant coaches of any sport, and no administrators were involved. No players gained financially or otherwise; no competitive advantage was gained; all of the books were returned.

Please drop the Gadsden rumors. That quote seems to indicate that everything has been looked into. That would include any Gadsden rumors.

Also, Alabama still only has one loss to Louisiana Monroe. They aren’t credited for the win, but they weren’t give a loss either. Louisiana Monroe still has the loss. We have to vacate, not forfeit. Their record for ‘05 is 0-2, for ’06 0-7 (I think that’s the number of losses we had that year.), and ’07 2-6.
