SB Nation and Its Fans

I am a football guy… I love it, and I really like the fact that 95% of Track em Tigers post are about football.  But, I am going to use my "editorial powers" to do something that I never thought I would do.  I am sure it is because of the "off season" and it may get me removed from my "editorial duties" all together, but I hope not.

I do not know how many SB Nation sites you folks visit.  I only look at a few (Team Speed Kills, Dawg Sports, and the Valley Shook, and lastly RollBamaRoll).   I will be the first to admit, that while I look at the sites, I do not frequent any of them, I go just to check out the latest.  I tend to only check out the Auburn sites around the web and there are enough of them to keep me busy.  Some of the SB Nation sites are better than others, and I am sure that TET rates someplace in the middle of pack.  Although Jay, WEA, Acid, and I want TET to be the best, we are not quite there yet.  We are not the biggest by any stretch, but we have a faithful following and we greatly appreciate your reading and commenting on the site.

Now to the heart of the matter, RollBamaRoll (RBR) has gotten to me.  It pains me to say that I let anything Alabama get to me, but they did this time.  I really do try to be the bigger person and not worry about what other fan bases do.  We as Auburn fans can only take care of Auburn, right?  Most Alabama fans will tell you that Auburn people worry about Alabama way to much anyways.  I am not one of those people; I do not worry about Alabama at all.  Don’t misunderstand me, I want to beat the Tide at every thing all the time, but I do not worry about them.  I typically do not call Alabama fans "Bammers," nor do I call myself a "Barner."  I think that both of those names are stupid, and are classless.  Under full disclosure I will let it be known that I have used that word (Bammer) on rare occasions and as a matter of fact, I used it this morning in a RBR post.  You can bet if Bammer comes out of my mouth (or typed) something has irritated me.

In a fan post on RBR about "Operation Red Dog," I lost my cool.  I hopefully did not show it too badly.  I want to apologize to my readers here on TET if they might have read it, and I am definitely not trying in increase traffic on RBR.  It was nothing big, but it shows that I have a differing opinion on rumors, and how the press (including us bloggers) handles them.

A bit of back-story, I went over to the site to see the compilation that was put up regarding the rumors of Auburn fans drumming up crap and trying to pin NCAA Violations on Alabama for things that were not done.  Despicable work, if true… but I called it BS.  Here is the post

"I have heard bits and pieces of this, but you guys have covered it well. I am calling BS, but I am sure that most Auburn People would. If it were you guys I am sure you would feel the same. If it comes out that this is real, I am sure most Auburn People will be ashamed, and want to kick the people behind these actions in the a$$.

Thanks for wrapping this up in a nutshell, but like most things NCAA infractions related, I doubt this is real."

During that small exchange (I only posted 4 or 5 times) it always came back to a couple of members and authors ripping away on Jay or WEA.  I will not go so far as to post all of that crap, but it is obvious that some of the folks at on that site think that TET drums up any dirt, no matter the source and posts it here.  The exchange also got me thinking about "fans" and cross SB Nation posting.  I like the fact that anyone can join any fan site.  I also like the fact that rivals can talk a little smack should they want to, but bashing someone for reading a story, posting about how they liked the coverage of the event, and then giving their opinion?  I don’t get it.

I do not expect all Auburn fans to act alike, or Alabama fan to for that matter.  But what happened to the decent fans.  Maybe I am blowing this out of proportion but maybe we at TET can at the very least take an active role in being better fans. We all have fans that we wish we did not have.  You the ones I am talking about.  But in my case, I was trying to read and comment as a fan, but I guess some folks cannot take a "Barner" being a good "fan" and posting on "their" site without a beat down or bashing of our editors.  I say enough… they can say or do whatever they want.  They can hate me because I am an Auburn Fan if they want to, I am over it… but all the WEA and Jay bashing is just sad.

Could it be that Bama Fans have developed a complex?  Could it be because they seem to get into trouble more than any other school?  Is it because they were so good for so long and had to endure the falling of the program?   Or is it because they were "back" for the third time in the last five or so years and they have some penned up frustrations.  I guess my Auburn educated mind just does not understand it… I guess it is an "Alabama thang and I would not understand."

For the folks who frequent the site in question, have fun over there… I am not interested.  If I want to see to all the Bama propaganda, I will open up the Birmingham News.  Who knows, maybe I will pop in Iron Bowl time.  I always like the banter back and forth that week.  Even if we are supposed to and do get blown out.

When they talk about me personally, I know I've made a point that has gotten to them...

With that said, it’s all in fun. I don’t hate Alabama. I love going after them, just like they enjoy going after Auburn. I’ve always said, football would not be worth playing if we didn’t have each other.

Huh?

Dude, get a backbone and grow a pair why don’t you. To hear an au fan say that makes me sick. Do you not put the “damn” in between war eagle either? Let me tell u something brother, you are in the minority in this state thinking like that. If thats the way you feel, then whats the point. THIS is why au and bama have the best rivalry in sports. Apologizing to someone is the right thing to do unless its a BAMMER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WE

ALABAMA leading the NCAA with infractions since 2001

I remember the days...

…..when Jay used to write for AOL’s Fanhouse. Fanhouse would typically tag anything about Alabama or Auburn for both sets of fans. If you identified yourself as an Auburn fan, trash talk was coming your way, no matter how neutral the post. I came to the conclusion that a large chunk of Bama posters weren’t going to like anything I posted. I’ve got better things to do with my time than mess with all that junk, unless maybe I’m on vacation on Iron Bowl week!

…..Some Auburn fans are the same way, I have to admit. Whatever.. I do appreciate comments from Bama guys, over here, that are well-reasoned.

same for me

we can all be jerks sometime and just the fact that a rival is posting on your teams boars automatically puts posters in defense mode. A few of us have tried hard to be level headed and even then we are deemed as “soft” or even “traitors”. I love the fact that i can join any blog on SB i want. But the problem is, letting those join who just want to flame. Those people annoy me. LIke the bama guys who post ALL the time here and NEVER come over to RBR…If you are truly a Bama fan, wouldn’t you spend 95% on that blog and not flaming here….

Dont get me wrong I like a nice dig every once in a while but some “bammers” here are annoying and they give “bammers” like me a bad name….

Anywho…

While I agree with the point Pete was making, it’s just football in the end. The point was, you are an editor. If you don’t agree with something, you should speak up. You didn’t say anything here about disagreeing, but then when everybody felt the same way as you on that post, you spoke up. Yeah, it’s always hard to speak up about something when it seems like the majority might be against you (speaking up is something I struggle with sometimes), but that’s the only way changes are made usually. If you don’t agree with what Jay or WEA were saying, say something. They might not agree or listen, but at least you said something.

But like I said, I agree with the point that was being made, but it is football, and in the end, there’s more important matters that maybe should be discussed and taken care of.

There are more important things in life....

That being said, there is not a more important thing in sport than Auburn vs. Alabama.
We all fall short of GLORY. One should never compromise one’s moral standards for any reason.
Defend the statistics, defend the turf, defend the truth even, never ever let anybody lead you away from GLORY.

I enjoy...

…going over to RBR and getting spears chucked at me. It’s how I hone my skills. But most people over there treat me just fine. You get the occasional poster who instantly wants to go negative and chase opposing fans away, so you just ignore them.

I like and encourage fans from other teams, especially Alabama’s, to come to our site and promote positive discourse. Except for the ocassional troll, most are looking to simply make a point or to engage in a constructive debate. Those are the fans that I respect, not the rabble-rousers who just want to spout off.

RBR has removed a few threads over there that turned into a fight between Barners and Bammers. Over here, I close down the comments. Once it gets past a point, there’s no going back, so might as well just end it for that thread.

If someone makes a comment you don’t like, you can either respond with facts or wit. You you come back with insults, YOU LOST. If someone insults you, you simply don’t give them the satisfaction of acknowledging it. If you’re looking for respect in the blogosphere, you gain it gradually with insightful posts, not pure homerdom.

That was very well put WEA..

I love going back and forth in debate with bama fans, No doubt about it. But when it gets out of control and turns to trash it loses something. In my opinion this is the strongest, ugliest, and deepest rivalry in football. Some of us actually hate the other side. For me its not that i hate the other school. I went there and got my degree from Alabama so how could i hate the school. Its their fans, For the most part, that i truly depise. Having grown up with one of the worst bammers on the planet and having gone to school with 15,000 more i got a 1st hand account of how bad, bad bammers can get. And yes there are always ugly fans at any school, but the ego’s that i’ve met in my time around bammers are second to none. I learned really quick that i don’t have what it takes to be a bama fan. There just isn’t enough room on my shoulders for it.

Well said, War Eagle Atlanta

We’ve certainly had our differences and aired them in a sometimes (over)heated manner, but what you’ve written here is right and you’ve practiced what you’ve preached.

You represent your fan base so well that I’m not even going to say anything bad about Auburn. Nicely done.

9/10 times...

…the problem is persons, no matter the conflict, cannot acknowledge the other sides point of view has validity.

In being a FOOTBALL fan, I personally try to objectively look (stop laughing) at both sides, no matter the opponent. In all honesty, admitting an opponent can be dangerous is the first step in overcoming said foe.

Both teams excelling, is good for both teams and the SEC.

Annihilating Doormat University (or The University of Doormat) is not entertaining. The satisfaction is in the suspense.

In closing, refer to this (NSFW, dirty language). This comic tells you all you need to know about the internet.
