Who is Derek Dooley?

Dooley_medium
And we thought we were finished with Dooley and the Bulldogs.

There's something about returning from summer vacation that gets you focused on college football season. After a week in the Redneck Riviera and ample time on the beach to absorb all the preseason publications, I feel about prepared as I'm going to be heading toward September 5th.

After again reading Acid Reign's great Louisiana Tech preview, I wondered why I didn't know more about their coach, Derek Dooley - son of Vince. Maybe this was a blind spot for me, but truthfully, until Dooley became a candidate for the Auburn job last December, I vaguely knew he even coached college football.

Dooley Sr. has always been an interesting character to me. I've followed him throughout my life and to this day find it fascinating that a former Auburn quarterback under Shug Jordan would go on to be a legendary coach at his alma mater's second biggest rival. Even after a long 25 year career in Athens, there's still part of me that thinks of Dooley as an Auburn Man.

So who is this Derek Dooley? We know he accomplished something last season that few have done - win at Louisiana Tech. Leading the Bulldogs to an 8-5 record and an Independence Bowl win over Northern Illinois may seem modest at best, but when you are talking about football in Ruston, Louisiana this is pretty big stuff.

Dooley walked on as a wide receiver at Virginia and played under legendary coach George Welsh. He earned a scholarship his sophomore year - I guess Vince needed the financial help - and ended up playing in three bowl games and was part of the 1989 ACC Championship team.

He's no dummy. He was named first team Academic All-ACC and went on to earn a law degree from Georgia in 1994. I know what you are thinking - so did Terry Bowden. But Dooley actually practiced in Atlanta a few years before getting in the family business.

After working as a graduate assistant at Georgia and a couple of seasons at SMU, Dooley hooked up with Nick Saban in 2000 and that's when things started happening for him. He did a little of everything in Baton Rouge and even made the ill-fated trip with Will Muschamp to Miami after Saban was named coach of the Dolphins.

When Louisiana Tech went looking for a replacement to Jack Bicknell, Dooley had the family lineage and coaching pedigree to land a Division I job. This season is a pivotal one for the young coach. He enters the year with a 13-12 record in two seasons at Ruston.

Auburn's opener will be no glorified walk through. Dooley welcomes back 16 starters in his third season and Gene Chizik will likely face an opening day opponent similar to Tommy Tuberville's back in 1999, when the first year coach had to scratch and claw for a 22-15 win over Appalachian State.

Keep an eye on Derek Dooley. Something tells me he may end up in the SEC sooner rather than later. He has a reputation for being all business - much like his father. He works his team as hard as anyone in the country and it's unlikely they'll beat themselves. There will be plenty of subplots on September 5th. Let's hope Auburn's ready.

I think

Auburn will learn a lot about their team from this game, which will be a test. Didn’t this team embarass Mississippi State last year?

I think

the fact that the game with MSU took place in Ruston did a lot to secure la tech’s win last year. Also, MSU was without question the worst team in the SEC last season. I don’t expect Auburn to be anywhere near the SEC’s worst team in 2009. I’m not going to completely look past louisiana tech, but at the same time I fully expect AU to get it together and get the W. War Eagle.

Didn't we

only beat MSU like 3-0?

3-2

Upon moving to AL, I let my wife decide who she would root for. After one day at a new job full of Bama fans, she met me at the door with a hearty cry of "WAR EAGLE"

So you're

trying to defend the bammer position and saying that AU was the worst in the SEC last year? Without question, MSU and UT were worse than AU last season. And I don’t know about the rest of you debbie downers out there, but I fully expect a good team from Auburn this year — no less than 8 wins. But yeah, way to back up a bammer and go against Auburn — maybe you should go on over to the dark side. War Eagle.

FWIW

I don’t think AU was the worst team in the SEC last year. Probably the biggest disappointment in terms of what they were expected to do nationally, but nowhere near the worst team. In reality, you should’ve won a few more games and probably made a bowl game had a bounce or two gone your way. Just sayin.

Whoa buddy

I’m not backing anyone up. I’m just pointing out that we weren’t that much better than MSU last year. To say we are gonna win 8 games before we’ve played one (which I hope we do) is extremely optimistic. We have a long way to go to and i don’t believe any game this year is a guaranteed win.

The one thing I learned last season is that optimism won’t get us Jack. I’m not against Auburn, but I’m still refusing to drink the Chizik kool aid until I see a couple games. We have some holes in our roster that may not be filled by this season and we have an offense that on paper doesn’t seem to differ that much from last years. I’m rooting for AU every down of every game, but I’m not blindly going to start predicting a complete turn around in Chizik’s first season when he has yet to play a single down.

Without question, MSU and UT were worse than AU last season.

Do you really think AU was “without question” better than UT? I’m not hatin’ (God knows I’ve seen some bad Bama years over the past decade), I just really want to know. Yes, AU beat them, and that’s all that matters, but all things considered, AU was a Crompton bonehead fumble in the endzone away from only scoring 7. Also, same record, UT had a better SEC record, and UT played much better than AU against their 3 common opponents.

AU had a

much better game against UGA than UT did. Once Tennessee gets a win over Auburn this decade, then I’ll give them a little credit. But for now they can fear the thumb.

I attribute it more to...

5 turnovers, 3 of which happened inside the La Tech redzone. But yeah, they sucked alot. They could have won that game at any time, as they held La Tech to less that 200 total yards.

I wouldn't be surprised

if Dooley one day ended up at Auburn. Karma, destiny, or spite. Take your pick!

I can see it if Chizik doesn't get the job done...

but if Chizik does his job Dooley will have a good job (I’m guessing Clemson or Tennessee ) within the next 5 seasons or so if he keeps it up.

I would have gone to bammer if my grades hadn't been good enough to go to AU

I wouldn't be surprised, either

Jay’s point about Vince is a good one, too. One of the many interesting sidelines to the Deep South’s oldest college football rivalry is the cross-pollination between the programs.

Vince Dooley is an Auburn alum who became a highly successful head coach at Georgia. Pat Dye is a Georgia alum who became a highly successful head coach at Auburn. Both have athletic facilities named for them on the campus of the school at which they worked but that they did not attend.

Shug Jordan, whom Jay mentioned, was an assistant coach at Georgia under Wally Butts. In recent years, several assistant coaches at both schools have been alumni of the other (Hugh Nall and Will Muschamp were Georgia alumni who worked at Auburn; Rodney Garner and Stacy Searels are Auburn alumni who work at Georgia).

Partly, this is due to proximity, but that alone cannot explain it. Georgia is much nearer to Clemson geographically than to Auburn, but the connections between Georgia and Clemson (while present) are not as pronounced. (Strangely enough, Clemson has more ties to Auburn—-Walter Riggs, John Heisman, etc.—-than to Georgia.)

It’s just another oddity of one of the finest rivalries in all of football.

Actually...

It seems that Clempzin has more ties to Alabama than us, with Frank Howard, that youngster Danny Ford and now Dabo Swinney—even know Walter Riggs originally founded the Hartwell program based on ours.

And Kyle, with Auburn and Georgia, how can you forget Joel Eaves and Erk?

Clemson.....

was modeled after AU’s campus. When the Clemson recieved its land grant and approval for construction they came to AU to study the campus and administration since AU was one of the first land grant institutions. The architecture on Clemsons campus is eerily similar to AU’s to this day.

I took road trips

there during college and have even been to a game there. Clempzin folks are good folks in my book. Some of them I call my closest friends. They go a little ape-shit with the Tiger paws, but other than that…
