Some more brouhaha out of Gainesville, Pat Dooley of the Gainesville Sun has written a column about the ongoing rumors of Urban Meyer's impending departure from the Gators, amidst all the speculation that he'd be starting his dream job up in South Bend next fall. With apologies to Vince Gill, let's give the Urban Legend one more last chance before he says he's not through. It all started with a Paul Finebaum column last week where FineBama accuses Meyer of a whole host of things:
- Planning a sharp exit left from the national stage once Tebow is gone after this year
- Being a straight-up liar (but not like any other coaches in the region known for their denials)
- Secretly funneling his successor at Utah with the plans to beat Alabama like a drum in the Sugar Bowl right after Florida dismantled them
- Establishing his very own penal league system right in the middle of Gainesville
- Hoodwinking fellow megalomaniac Bernie Maachen into a raise in spite of massive cuts in the general fund at the university
- Risking his stock dropping to zero if he fails to capitalize on his success, a la Billy Donovan, the Gator's basketball coach
- Co-conspiring with Richard Bruno Hauptmann in the Lindbergh baby kidnapping
But Dooley, known to be a confidant of many a Gator coach, witnessed Meyer make these remarks during a golf tournament for charity, right after he asked permission to address the subject: "I'm not going to Notre Dame. Ever. I'm going to be the coach at Florida for a long time, as long as they want me."
There was little doubt that the remarks came abruptly, in response to the preceding Finebaum column. Ostensibly, Meyer would have to make the remarks to keep recruiting from being affected, but thus far, the Gators seem to have no problem in that department with 15 commits already for next year. Meyer then ordered Dooley and three other writers to print the remarks. I say 'ordered' rather than requested because none of them wanted to have to start paying for their own tickets to Florida Field.
Dooley thinks that the Golden Dome WAS Meyer's dream job, but that was before he became acclimated to central Florida, winning national championships, plowing fertile recruiting soil and wearing jorts 365 days a year. Dooley's summation: Urban ain't going. Finebaum's? Bon voyage--soon.
We're all familiar with the term plausible deniability, and we all know that in order to keep up appearances and their own personal stock, coaches must deflect too much attention when it concerns whether or not they're leaving for another job. I don't even know why we ask them, honestly.

Classic Finebaum
Takes nothing and creates a crapstorm out of it. He seems to know for a fact that Meyer gave Utah the gameplan to beat bama in the Sugar Bowl. How much evidence does he supply to back it up? None.
Finebaum argues Meyer is leaving based on what? The fact that Finebaum thinks it is a good idea? Well that must make it so.
This article is especially impressive for Paul because unlike his usual crap that adds fuel to the fire, in this article he is actually setting up the kindling and starting it himself.
Oh well this time of year is tough on “sportswriters” so if you cant find something to cover just make something up.

Finebaum claims with "authority"
That it was Georgia telling the Florida recruit that Corch Meyers wasn’t going to be there next year. He was also telling this to an Alabama fan that sounded less than knowledgable about college football outside of the Tide, which is typically the crowd that Finebaum attracts. Nothing like slinging muddy lies and hoping some of it sticks to boost the ratings. He plays down to the lowest common denominator and that’s what he gets paid for. Anyone that takes Finebaum seriously, well I’ve got some ocean front property in Arizona that’s perfect for you.

John Thrower is more than a lil pissed at Finebaum these days. Paul took it upon himself to claim that Thrower was the one that sent the Gasden evidence to to the radio show. Annouced it on his show as though it was fact. Thrower, who has been friends with Paul for a number of years, called Paul that night at home. Paul wasn’t home at the time but called John back and apologized for the comment and promised a retraction the next day. Well according to Thrower its not gonna stop there. As he feels as though Paul challeged his character on air. With Thrower being a pissed off lawyer, Paul’s mouth just might come back and bite him this time. I for one hope its a mastiff size bite.

Yep Alabama got beat pretty bad by Utah. But dismantled by Florida???? Did I watch a different game than everybody else. Yeah they lost, but i recall Alabama controlling the game all the way until 10:45 left in the 4th. A dismantling is 36 to sh?t. Guess we had to give credit to someone else for doing what the barn couldn’t.
Who cares if the rest is true of false. Although finebaum might stretch the truth a little, lets not be a hypocrite and fault him for the same things you do in your little feel good article.

You're right in saying that BAMA was not dismantled by Florida...
BAMA had Florida on the ropes and choked and was then subsequently DISMANTLED by Utah in the Sugar Bowl.
As for Finebuam not being a BAMMER, he may have graduated from U.T., but it’s obvious that he has a man crush on Nick Saban. On the few occasions that he manages to talk about sports, it’s usually nothing more than a Saban Love Fest.

That was the point I was trying to make. Not taking a swipe at Bama per se, but if you’ve listened to the show then you know that your description of the phone lines lighting up if he makes a comment in the negative at Bama is true. He’s just like a politician telling the uneducated voter what they want to hear to win a vote.
