What... Pay to Tailgate?
Well, if you are an
Don’t get me wrong, I am all for entrepreneurs, but this is pretty ridiculous. It is a great idea just not at Auburn... why couldn't have these two 17 year olds done this someplace else... like Ole Miss. Let them sell out the grove and see what happens. Oh well, I guess
In its current form, the "tailgating" area will not affect the location that we have used for the past few years. Of course we had to move to our new local because the University needed a new building in our old spot. Something tells me that next season the area will be expanded and take over "our" spot. That will truly be a shame. We have gotten to know all the people who tailgate around us and have a great time hanging out with them. Too bad that making more money is killing part of the Auburn Experience.
Don’t think that it is just "old guys" like me that missing out. Think about all the young children that run up and down the tailgating areas throwing footballs and playing games. Some of my favorite memories of tailgating at

hey guy
Auburn isn’t charging you to tailgate. You can choose to pay someone to do your tailgate for you. Don’t make up stuff to complain about.
Thank you
This is exactly what I’ve been trying to tell everyone here on the Plains. Using “tailgate guys” is completely optional and on a small section of campus. The entire rest of the University’s campus is completely open for people to tailgate on their own for free. People are making a mountain out of a molehill.
"Tigers make history. Undefeated, unmatched, undeniably the best team in Auburn football history, and the best team in the nation. They are YOUR NATIONAL CHAMPIONS, Auburn fans. The TIGERS are 13-0!" -- Rod Bramblett, AU Network, 01.03.05
Jerry, I can never tell when people with dry wit are being sarcastic. Deadpan delivery is perfect cover for irony.
But I believe, aside from the fact that the tailgateguys set up the tent, provide the furniture, do everything but cook the meat, and then clean up after you, that there is a FEE for using a designated section set aside for this recently identified activity formerly known as tailgating.
Maybe I did not explain myself as well as I would have liked. It is a slow news cycle and I am just trying to fill time for about 39 more days.
With that said… No Auburn is not “charging” you to tailgate, they are just “charging” you to use the spot that you have been using for the past x number of years. What a crock. The university has already mad it darn near impossible to get all your tailgating gear to your tailgating spot, without having to lug it all about a mile. They used to let you at least drop your stuff off and then go park elsewhere. They don’t even allow that any longer.
I guess I am just a little put out by the whole idea. You know how this well go. It will start out in a small area, and then consume the entire areas around Jordan-Hare. You know how businesses work. Start small and expand into all primo markets (in this case spots). You have to remember that someone has been tailgating in that spot, and may have 20-30 people that are used to coming to that spot without fail. I can feel the pain for those people, and hope that Auburn does not allow this to take over campus.
If you are a War Damn Eagle, you can War Damn anything.
I'm more than "a little put out"....
….I’m scared</em> this will be the beginning of the end . Thanks Zach for bringing this to Trackem Tigers attention. Having been a tailgaiter since 1958, I appreciate the progress the Athletic Department has made over the past 40yrs. I understood when a ticket/contribution program was started. Then however the school started restricting tailgaiting , then closing streets making tailgaiting difficult in those areas , and now instituting “Pay Tailgaiting” areas. No matter the “good intentions” these moves help discourage coming to the game. Our family is raising its 3rd generation on Auburn gameday traditions and I am scared that this may be the beginning of the end for continuing those traditions.
Over the years some have compared Auburn with Georgia. Well UGA has all but elliminated any real tailgaiting. This is definitely one area I do not want us compared to them. Escalating ticket/contribution cost coupled with the disappearance of tailgaiting may force our family to watch the games at home… a fate we have worked hard to avoid !

Tailgate anywhere ... but here, and here, and here, etc
No I don’t believe that the University is selling out to these “Tailgate Set Up Providers”, but I am concerned with the continual encroachment of the University on more and more traditional tailgate locations.
AUshorecm said “The entire rest of the University’s campus is completely open for people to tailgate on their own for free.”
Oh, yeah ?? Try tailgating in the lot next to the west side of Jordan Hare. Try tailgating in the parking lot at the Coliseum. Try tailgating at the parking lot next to Plainsman Park. Try tailgating at Ag Heritage Park (where we did for 20 years before the moved us a couple of years ago). Or even at the RV area beside Ham Wilson Arena. I believe you will find this far from FREE.
I do like Auburn’s push to beautify campus on gamedays and protecting some areas to allow pedestrian walking space (on North Donahue) and reserving some greenspace, but I am troubled by the University’s use of tailgating spots as a revenue source.
I am glad that this is a just in a FEW spaces on campus and hope that it will not be a forebearer of what is to come. But, I am sure the Native Americans WERE glad the Settlers ONLY wanted to “tailgate” in the coastal areas.
We shall see …
Are we overlooking...
the fact that none of this would have come about if it wasn’t for people leaving their trash everywhere after a day of tailgating?
It seems to me that all this came about because the university was having to police so much trash the day after. All these people that claim to love the university were the very ones leaving trash everywhere after they left. Whether it be because they were too drunk, pissed off, running to Tomer’s Corner, or just tired and ready to go home they chose not to pick up their trash. Someone saw it as a problem and an expense to the university so they brought it to the table. The university in turn said well we’ll give it a trial run. You can offer to certain areas and we’ll see how it goes. The company then decided to offer it with packages and so on and so on. But it all comes back to the trash starting it all.
If people that tailgated just picked up after themselves none of this would have started. If they truly appreciated the university and its beauty then they would make that extra effort. But since they don’t or haven’t we get what we have now. Thinner wallets and alot of fussing.
Agree with paratiger. Whenever the site looks like the last day at Woodstock, then you have to do something.
Unfortunately, anonymity allows people to walk away from their mess. Short of having people sign for a specific space for accountability, this is one way to address the problem. I also think it is designed to allow kids without an RV to maybe experience some phat tailgating of their own.

here here
You hit the nail on the head. Last year I am watching all these punk kids smash beer bottles on the ground, dropping cans where they stand. And there are garbage cans within five to ten strides from where they are standing!! Just thinking about it pisses me off. And how many of us have had coolers stolen? arrrrghhhhhh!!!!!
I’m the ripe old age of 35 but I don’t think my class has as many classless students as I see now.
Hating Lowder since 1993.
The Beginning of the End
The Alabama Polytechnic Institute is a land grant institution. I’ve read the sign. It is public land. I completely disagree with allowing organizations with no Auburn affiliation to be allowed to operate and control land that is supposed to be used for the public good. We don’t understand that free tailgating is not going to be affected. They’ve taken 70 spots for tailgating and are charging premium prices. I guess I would not be opposed to the concept in theory if all the proceeds went to the University or Athletic Department like the pree-mo parking spots. But this money will be taken from the fans of Auburn University supporting Auburn University athletics and handed over to private organizations who only care about getting fans to the games…not the quality of education or the integrity of the football program. When will they start privatizing the areas next to the Engineering Building or Draughn Library to make the Varsity more profitable?
Not that we couldn’t see this coming. They have been restricting tailgate areas since I started attending in 1998. I really think this is a manuever to push the great unwashed off of campus so when ESPN shows up on gameday, you only see the ass holes who should have gone to Ole Miss. I think that Auburn has alienated a significant portion of their demographic by making such a dick move. That demographic comes from the good ole boy, Ag major redneck who likes to party on football weekends because it is his escape from the drudgery of his job in a sinking economy. These people cannot afford for the Varsity cater their meals. They eat their own hotdogs and hamburgers which taste better anyway. They are Auburn men and women. Are we trying to make some kind of a moronic Oxford Grove?
The only thing that can come of this is significant acts of pompous assholery. I hope my sons go to Auburn. I want to show them what football tailgating is supposed to be like. It’s supposed to be drinking beer, burning meat, and being friendly to all teams’ fans besides the 11 subordintes of the SEC. It’s sharing with the great unwashed who happen to stumble into your tailgate. But most importantly, tailgating invloves a DAMN TAILGATE. I hope these lazy bastards who want their meals catered enjoy sitting the whole game as well.
Word to Jeremy Roberts’ mother.
Affiliation
The guy is a 2006 Auburn grad. There is your affiliation.
I’m sure the university is getting their cut of the income. So the money is going to the university or the athletic department.

Could be wrong...
but I don’t think The Varsity is owned by an Auburn grad. Something tells me their affiliation is with Tech or UGA based on locality.
Maybe Auburn University will get a cut, but a significant portion of the funds will go to Tailgate Guys and their caterers. So the University gets a relative mosquito bite bump in their funding, two Auburn grads hit the jackpot, a small percentage of the campus is regulated and cleaned by hired hands, and 70 tailgating spots are spoken for by quasi-gaters. Prime tailgating spots, mind you. As a public institution, this practice seems to violate the theory behind public land use.
It's not The Varsity Restaurant
The Varsity is the name of a package.
http://www.tailgateguys.com Checkout their About Us.
The stadium is on the public land and they charge to use it. Should the stadium be free too?
even if they are sold
I see it as a “lets try this out” type of thing. not long term
ALABAMA leading the NCAA with infractions since 1994
While we are on the subject
I will be down from Indy for the Tech game. It’s my first time back since 1994. Can anyone point me to a good area to tailgate(other than the Tailgate guys)? thanks
I've seen good TEAMS beat teams with great individuals.
Not exactly tailgate...
…..But we park for games near the Auburn Junior High, on Samford Avenue. There’s a little park next door, full of RVs and the like. Pretty cool people. We try to get there at least 3 or 4 hours before kickoff, and parking’s never been a problem, even on big games like Florida in 2006. It’s a couple of blocks off campus, but you’ll walk farther if you do, say, the hayfields.
I appreciate the entrepreneurial spirit.....
but having said that I am sad to see areas that had traditionally gone to the first come first serve become a space for rent. It does set a horrible precedent. Everything does not have to become commercial enterprise…..I just hope it fails although there is a fool born every minute and it will probably become a huge success and they will expand and then everyone will remember the good ole days when tailgating was a family picnic that didn’t cost an arm and a leg.
I would have gone to bammer if my grades hadn't been good enough to go to AU
