Still Questions
Well after the much talked about first scrimmage for our Tigers here is what we know… very, very little. Yesterday, Trooper said that T-Zach and Darvin Adams are ready now. From what I hear
Quarterback. Evan Woodberry has really got me thinking that he is on to something. All we have heard is that this scrimmage is going to go a long way to helping the staff name a starter. Kodi, Chris, and Neil only played 2 series each. Something tells me that the staff already has a starter. If they do, I will be quite disappointed that they want to keep it a secret. You can ready Evan’s post here.
Offensive Line. We are going to be fine as far as starters go. After that we are going to have issues. Guards Mike Berry and Lee Isom, tackles Lee Ziemba and Andrew McCain and center Ryan Pugh are set. Eddins, Odom, and Roseman were all injured in the summer. Maybe they can get into some sort of shape to see some playing time.
Linebacker. Well, maybe I was wrong in my post a week or so back. Eltoro Freeman must be quite good. If writers are comparing him to Tray Blackmon on the field, that is pretty impressive. Tray for all his faults off the field, he was a stud on the field (unless he needed to be in pass coverage). Freeman is short, but maybe he makes up for that with speed and heart. Depth is going to be a problem. Bynes is the leader, and apparently he is doing a fine job in that area.
Defensive Line. Personally I think that we will be fine here, barring any major disaster.
Defensive Backs.
Maybe the next group of practices... followed by another scrimmage will answer out questions. This one sure did not do it.

Freshmen QB's
Apparently Clint Moseley and Tyrik Rollison had most of the play yesterday with Moseley having the biggest play, a 40 yard pass to Emory Blake for a TD. Rollison had a 15 yd TD pass, too. These two will be great, but I know Evan Woodberry thinks Rollison is the future of the offense.
So
it seems depth is an issue in a lot of places. If we get visited by the injury fairy as many times as last season we could be in some real trouble. Hopefully we won’t have the sort of year we did last year where the D played 3/4 of every game.

Well isn’t this just great. This scrimmage was supposed to help narrow the field between The Big Three (Caudle, Burns and Todd) and instead the two freshmen who are supposedly locks to be redshirted get almost all of the playing time?
What is going on? UNLESS Malzahn already has the starter in his mind and knows who his guy is (if so, why wouldn’t he come out and say it so that guy could get all the reps in practice), why are the two freshmen getting most of the reps? I just don’t understand. This tells me that our QB situation sucks (which that’s not a newsflash) and Malzahn is really considering Rollison and wanted to get a better look at him. I refuse to believe my earlier statement (and Evan Woodberry’s hypothesis) that Malzahn may already have his man because surely he would let everybody know and let the QB know so that he could start getting all the reps with the first team in practice. Why would he need to keep it a secret?
Personally, I think Malzahn doesn’t have a lot of confidence in any of the upperclassmen and he’s really considering Rollison as the QB. The guy may be a true frosh and may need to redshirt, but if he’s the best QB on the roster right now, then he should play.
Here’s my predicition: Rollison either starts the season or one of the upperclassmen starts the season and Rollison takes over four or five games into the season because of ineffectiveness. Folks, the QB situation looks just as bad as last year. It may be another long season on the Plains.
In the world of depth-chart-analysis ...
… rationlistic is not the enemy of optimistic.
It really doesn’t matter whether you’re a half-full kind of person or a half-empty kind of person … the sad truth is that 2 different AU coaching staffs have now gone through 2 different spring practices and through 2 different fall practices and neither of the 2 AU coaching staffs were able to pick a starting QB.
The AU coaching staff had 5 years to recruit and prepare a QB to replace Brandon Cox. It’s undeniable that they failed to do so.
I’m optimistic that Rollison may end that very bad run.
yeah about that....
I agree with mspirate. The staff would not have wasted a practice scrimmage on the freshmen unless they have absolutely no idea who to start. Don’t read too much into it guys. Stick with the simplest explanation-its usually right. Burns didn’t just automatically learn how to be a good passer, Todds arm may be suspect as well as his mobility, Caudle is Mr Glass. What other explanation could there be? Makes you wonder….

I don't think that the 2 freshman getting most of the reps......
to the second team guys and underclassmen says that much about Malzahn “evaluating” them. I don’t know maybe I’m wrong but if I’m looking at QB’s then I want them with the first team offense going against the first team defense. Seems to me that either the older guys were given a short series to impress or it was a dog and pony show or both. I still say the starter will be one of the three upperclassmen. And with the limited access that the press is given to practice all we can do is speculate on very limited information.
I would have gone to bammer if my grades hadn't been good enough to go to AU
Agree
The rookies need practice and reps because they might be required to step in later in the season. Both Todd and Caudle are injury-prone, for lack of a better more succint term.
Kodi cannot pass accurately enough to be the main quarterback, but he will do well in a running offense. Some people are confused about the fact that Kodi being in the wildcat means that he will get the ball, and thus there is no surprise for the defense.
But that is not the case. All the backs are set back like in the shotgun, and the center is then able to snap to any of the three. And even then, they can hand off, run options, reverses, or short passes to WRs or backs who go out. Kodi creates that 12th man by being a viable option to run the ball that Todd would not. Kodi can block, go out for a pass, or run options, again, which Todd could not.
Todd is a pocket passer. He can hand off, or pass. But counting on him to save the day by running it is asking too much, plus getting crushed by a linebacker with murder on his mind jeopardizes the golden arm.
So, getting back to the point I raised in my first paragraph, one of these rookies might have to step in later in the season when Todd and/or Caudle get broken. Hopefully, by the middle of the season, the freshmen will have learned enough of the playbook to be able to play.
Todd knows the playbook. Maybe Caudle does too, but he has not seen the SEC defense come calling at speed very often to know tempo.
But I would have to say, if the coaches are afraid of Todd’s shoulder enough to start Caudle in his stead, then they must think Caudle is more durable, more confident, more accurate, and better able to make reads than Todd.
