BREAKING NEWS: Chris Todd Named Auburn's Starting Quarterback

The Birmingham News and al.com are reporting tonight that Chris Todd has been named Auburn's starting quarterback for the season opener against Louisiana Tech. In another shocking piece of news, last year's part-time starter, Kodi Burns has been moved to wide receiver.  Here's the story from al.com....

Chris Todd will take aim as Auburn's starting quarterback

Chris Todd was named Auburn's starting quarterback Thursday night in the comeback story of fall practice. One of his chief rivals, Kodi Burns, was moved to wide receiver.

``It was a tough, tough day for everybody. They handled it as true pros,'' said coach Gene Chizik.

Chizik said he was proud of how Burns handled the move.

``Kodi is a very talented young man and he's an Auburn man. He's very unselfish. We feel like Kodi can help our football team somewhere on this offense,'' Chizik said.

Todd, who signed with Auburn out of junior college before last season, was troubled by his passing shoulder last year. He won three of the five games he started and finished the year completing 86 of 156 passes for 903 yards and five touchdowns and six interceptions. Though he didn't throw in the spring, Todd was on the field learning Gus Malzahn's new offense.

Todd didn't throw during spring workouts after shoulder surgery in December following an uneven 2008 season. But he made up for lost ground in the nine days of fall work, according to coach Gene Chizik, by winning the job over Burns, Neil Caudle and Tyrik Rollison.

Chizik said he has not determined who is the No. 2 quarterback.

Todd began his college career at Texas Tech, but after losing the starting job, transferred to Hutchinson Community College in Kansas. He played there one year before signing with Auburn. He won three games as an Auburn starter last season. Burns won two.

Todd arrived at Auburn with the sore shoulder he hurt at Hutchinson and his passing reflected it. His passing improved this fall. He's a senior.

Burns started the seven other games last season, completing 94-of-179 passes for 1,050 yards and two touchdowns and seven interceptions. Burns and Caudle were the primary quarterbacks during spring practice.

As long as the shoulder holds out, I’m happy. But I would have a guy dressed and prepped at all times during the season because that arm is suspect.

Happy about keeping Kodi in the game. Hope he stays motivated because he can contribute this year.

Agreed

the coaches need to go ahead and figure out who the number 2 man is

Rollison seems to be getting the reps after Todd. I like that idea. If Todd can last a few weeks before breaking, then Rollison might be a legitimate player. For Tyrick, he must learn the mental aspects of the position.

I like that Kodi is continuing to take reps at QB. If he is gonna be a wildcat he will be expected to throw. Considering his throwing skills, he needs reps to keep it fresh. For Kodi, he needs to train the physical aspects of the position, i.e., passing.

But Kodi is a bit behind Caudle in the mental aspects of the position, so we need to keep Caudle up to speed for short term insurance. It’s complicated, but it is what it is. It is manageable.

I think the coaches got it right.

'Bout freakin' time...

Can’t say this is the decision I expected, but glad it’s finally been made. Now I can go back to the meaningful things in life, you know like paying attention to family, my job, instead of spending all my time surfing AU blogs waiting for the latest news.

He must have proven something....

I sure hope his shoulder is really healed. I cringed every time I saw those wounded ducks he threw up for grabs last year. I trust the coaches decision though. It’d be awesome if Mr five and nineteen changed to eighteen and nineteen with a NC in the pocket! Here’s to hoping right? WAR EAGLE!!!

Well if Todd does crumble, we’ve got Rollison waiting.

Really.

I am behind Todd all the way at this point but I certainly Burns being moved to receiver as a way to keep fans from being separated in the decision and a rally cry to get behind Todd. Burns at receiver can be used to catch passes and to pass off reverses and screens.

Hell

I wouldn’t mind seeing Burns line up in the backfield, too, in the ‘Wild Tiger’ (or whatever we’re going to call it) set. The guy is elusive as hell and can run, not to mention always being a threat to chuck it.

I think Rollison will be named the #2 QB

And we can pencil him in as the starter for 2010

More like write it in pen…Rollison will be the starter next year, and he’s already got the #2 QB job this year (according to AuburnSports.com)

I've posted before...

…..that Todd might be the man, if the arm is healed. Evidently, it is. My statement, is in the comments here:

Somebody break out the cookies for this guy

I like how you pointed out your how you were right. Way to be humble. Just kidding dude. Don’t want people to get gangster on my so called bammer a$$. That sounds so lame “bammer”. I’m not sure if that would offend me even if I was a fan. But anyways, that’s enough about you all. I think Todd is a good choice, if your a bammer. Another year of intercepting punts thrown by Chris Todd. He’s a good guy I guess. He can’t through worth an Auburn but he’ll do. Besides he has two first names, kind of like Ricky Bobby. I hope he works out really well. Maybe Auburn can have their best season ever made. If that happens they might be able to play my Trojans in the Pizza Bowl. WAR DAMN BUZZARD HOORAY

Dude you're a simpleton and a tool to boot.....

you should read a couple of self help books…….like “A Dummies Guide to Loading a Gun” or “A Dummies Guide to Noose Tying”.

I would have gone to bammer if my grades hadn't been good enough to go to AU

by Todd92 on Aug 15, 2009 9:00 PM CDT up reply actions

hmmmm sounds like a plan

Since you’re an Aubarn tiger you should know how to load a gun. I definitely know your pretty fluent on tying a noose. Why do you have to bring race into this. I’m a black man and i think you are trying to say you want to hang me. This guy hates black people. I suggest if you’re a recruit for the barn, you take a look at this. They still believe in the racist KKK heritage that is Auburn. Thanks guy for the post I’m going to take this to scout.com.

Take a chill pill!

…..How would anyone know if you’re black, white, Russian, or what; from a blog comment post? Todd’s post pretty much makes fun of the noose-tying crowd, they way I see it.

JAY

PLEASE BOOT THIS D BAG. IN ALL OF HIS POSTS HE HASN’T MADE A SINGLE VALID POINT OR CONTRIBUTED TO ANY THREAD. THE DUDE IS JUST A FLAMER TOOL. IM SICK OF GOING TO CHECK COMMENTS AND SEEING 5 OF THEM FROM HIM AND 5 OF THEM FROM REGULARS TELLING HIM HOW BAD HE SUCKS.

i’M NOT REALLY A PRO BOOTING KIND OF GUY, BUT BOOT HIM PLEASE!

How does a tying a noose or loading a gun...

refer to race? That’s baffling. My comment was intended as a joke for you to practice those methods on yourself and do the world a favor. And as far as the Racist KKK heritage…..I never once in my life have been accused of being a racist…….you tool I reserve the right to like or dislike people on an individual basis regardless of the color of their skin. The funny thing is you pick probably the most liberal person on this board to accuse of racism……idiot.

And further more.....

man up and quit using race as a means to belittle people the only person you end up belittling is yourself……you should be ashamed.

One more issue behind us...

Kodi shows a Auburn Man’s class today as he handles the decision “like a pro”.

wheres Todd92?

Dude! I called it! Burns is out. As I predicted. Think he’d do well at receiver!

by ArieGold on Aug 14, 2009 12:53 PM CDT via mobile reply actions

I have said all along that whoever the QB is.....

we should get behind him. That is something I’m not sure you would have done fi it were Kodi. The word is from all sources it was a very tight competition……I am rooting for Todd and hope he can stay healthy and do the job. I was tired and still am tired of people calling out a kid saying how bad he is or how he can’t do it, when they really don’t have a clue. I wouldn’t be surprised if Kodi is a stand out in the Wildcat and at reciever given some time to be coached up, but I also wouldn’t be surprised if he competes for QB in the future. It will be interesting to see how this all unfolds.

That was last year...

I hope everybody can get behind Chris and support the decision. I’m surprised that Todd won the job, but if the surgery did its job and his arm is strong why not have him be the #1 guy. His arm was his downfall last year not his head. In fact I throw out last year like it never happened, because there was no way given EVERYTHING that was going on that we were going to be successful.
Believe me, unless Chizik and Malzahn have a carreer deathwish, they aren’t starting Todd unless he IS the best QB. I’m relieved to see that they are willing to do what’s best for the team and not what may be the most popular decision. They are doing daring things and trying to put the best offense with the most weapons on the field. Kodi at WR?!! Thats good news to me, but we won’t know the story until they hit the field.
If Todd has his arm strength back and can stretch the field, imagine what we can do with Mario Fannin, Ben Tate and Kodi out on the field at the skill positions. We COULD be very explosive offensively.

On what day did the Lord create Bear Bryant and couldn't he have rested on that day too?

I have to say...I'm impressed with the coaching decisions so far...

This is great news…from what I have heard, the surgery did its job and Todd is throwing bullets. What a great story if he comes back this year and turns all that bad press last year around. I would love to see him do it!

tigerball

i think we will be fine this year but i dont understand why i see some guys that say they would commit if we offered.why have we not offered? and id like to know if anyone else has thought about away to start new traditions on game day, like on goal line stands a chant of some kind, like tiger d,or maybe make the red zone into tiger territory,or something.we need to keep chiz and zahn as long as possible,or at least till they get us 6 titles so bama folk will shut up and bury him (bear) already
