My Take

Everyone else seems to have done a piece on Chris Todd so why not do one as well.  When I read that "The Todd" [High Five] was going to be the starter, I did what most people I know did and threw up a little in my mouth.  After spitting a couple of times and chewing almost an entire pack of Big Red, I came to the realization that deep down we all knew this would happen.   And we all know it could be worse, we could have a Duke Basketball Player named as the starting QB.

Knowing what I know about Malzahn’s offense (which is seeing Arkansas and Tulsa games) this is a short pass with perfect timing type of attack.  The Todd has always known where to throw it and when to throw it… he just could not actually throw it.  Maybe he is able to now.  The players seem to think he has plenty of "zip" on the ball.  Just having the ability to hit the deep ball once or twice a game will get the safeties to back up a little.  That will open up the lanes for Tate, Fannin, Smith, McCalebb, etc. to pound away.

Personally, I have always been a Kodi supporter and I have never hid that fact.  I thought that his legs would be able to get him out of trouble and his mechanics would "come around."  I guess I was wrong.  But the kid sure made a lot of friends in the locker room with his "speech."  I would like to have a transcript of it as much as it is talked about.  I hope for his sake that he is able to work in the wildcat to use those legs, and make some big plays for the Tigers.  I think he is a good kid that just could not get it all together at the right time.  Oh well… lets move on Kodi and be a great receiver.  The staff appears to like what they have seen in the few days he has practiced at the new position.

Tyrik Rollison also appears to have the backup job, no matter what the coaching staff says.  Him getting more reps in the second scrimmage is a tale tell sign.  Something tells me we will see him playing late in the season, should things go badly or the injury bug bite us.  Looking at him, it is obvious that he needs to bulk up and a redshirt year will allow that.  But if he is as talented as it is being reported… who knows.  Stranger things have happened on The Plains.

Just a bit over two weeks remaining, I cannot wait!!

On a side note:  Does anyone else just love getting an email from Jay Jacobs?  It drives me up a wall.  His staff is sending out information that is at least a day old, and expects us to be greatful to get the info straight from him.  I do find it interesting that I did not get one from him regarding the tailgating situation on campus this fall.

Hate to disagree....

But i think it would be a bad idea not to redshirt Rollison in 2009. A few years ago i said the same thing about Kodi. He too could have really benefitted from a redshirt year. Working on his mechanics while learning the speed of the game. Rather than being thrown into the fire and told to dance with the big boys.

Rollison could have more time to get oriented with the playbook, timing, and speed of the game. As well as building his confidence among his teammates as he gets to know them and they begin to trust him. Giving him the ability to hit the ground running next year as he battles for the starting job.

We have enough backups now to get the job done. So why should we burn a year of eligibility just so he can play mop up in a few games? He could get the same training going up against the fresh scout team versus playing a tired worn out defense late in a game against lower teer Div 1 or Div 2 schools.

He looks to be our future for sure. But that future doesn’t have to start today for him to be effective in the future to come.

This would be the way to go ...

if Todd stays effective and healthy.

but … if Todd has to be replaced, it looks like Rollison is the way they’ll go.

i don’t believe they’ll burn his redshirt for mop-up duty … but, he’s the guy next year for sure.

Absolutely....

Given that he can prove it on the field. Which i don’t think he’ll have any problem doing. Because we can’t forget about Trotter and Mosley. Both of those guys have shown promise too. We just can’t show all the favoritism to Rollison.

Yeah we think he is going to be “The Shit”, But alot of us thought the same about Kodi (not trying to compare the 2). I just think that with Caudle in the wing and a competent backup this is our best opportunity to teach Rollison and build his confidence before he is set on fire….

I don't think many people

deep down knew this would happen. Chris Todd has been written off since halfway through last season. I’ll be the first one to say that apparently I was dead wrong about Todd as I had pretty much forgotten about him.

But, for the coaching staff to make this move it must mean he has shown some serious talent and skill in the practices thus far. It has been a curious off season to say the least and this is just one more step down that precarious road we seem to be headed down. If Chizik says Todd is the man for the job then I support them both.

As for Rollison, I’m not even going to begin to praise him/hope for him or anything until I see it on the field. Auburn fans almost to a man were drooling over Kodi Burns a couple of years ago, me included, and I’m not falling into that trap again. Bottom line AU needs to focus more on QB recruitment. Its a position that has consistently held back our offenses and I’m sick of hearing about other school’s quarterbacks all the time.

Overall, I still feel really good about our chances this year to make some noise.

Chris Todd was injured

all of last year. Apparently he was at 75%. The obvious question is if he was inured why was he playing? Most agree, he shouldn’t have been. He should have been in rehab. However he had shoulder surgery in the offseason and apparently he’s at 100%. I have a friend on the team that said he’s looking really good. This is the same guy that barely lost the Texas Tech QB job to Graham Harrell a few years back. (Yall know who he is). Not saying Todd will be the next Jason Campbell, but I think he’ll be a great fit in this offense.

Tyrik Rollison without a doubt is the future. I can’t wait to see when they unleash this guy.

I just can't see it yet.

I hope very much that old Chris Todd proves me wrong. I can’t help but like the guy. He picks himself back up and pushes forward when everybody counts him out. I do think that if he does well this year he could write a book about how to pick yourself up off the ground when you seem all but knocked out for good. I think it’s a testament to what kind of a person he is. Furthermore, I think he has a great more deal of credibility writing a self-help book than John Callipari ever thought about. Wow, that guy has some serious nerve huh?

Having said all that, with the hopes I had for last year I would just as soon not get excited this time around. Not to mention, Todd didn’t do well last year and that’s just the facts. Okay, so he was injured. Well, I’ve seen guys be hurt before and still make a positive difference on the field when they weren’t at 100%. To me, Todd seems like the great guy at practice. He’s got the great attitude and he’ll out work anybody. However, when it hits game speed, he really seems to struggle. For him, the game is just a different dimension he hasn’t conquered yet from what I can tell. I imagine he looks unreal at practice. The problem is, last year it certainly didn’t transfer over to game day. I know all too well about how many things went wrong for our team last year. Unfortunately, until this season starts, we do not have a more accurate measuring stick.
