Finally Practice Starts

So players reported to campus today, and practice starts on Wednesday.  I for one cannot wait.  I am so tired of the off season.  Although I do not think that we as Auburn fans will get the answers we are looking for in the early parts of practice.  Though, I do think that we will get some answers before the weather gets cool.  Looking at the comments left here on TET… the fans seem split on the QB race.  Hopefully Malzahn will get a front runner pretty quickly so we can move on, and get an offense that is ready to play.  It is good to hear that the offensive line is bigger and stronger, compared to last season.  Hopefully they will more like the 2007 line.... blowing people off the ball.

As the questions at QB linger on… has anyone noticed that our Linebackers are going to be extremely small?  Eltoro Freeman while being highly touted, he sure is short.  I know that Tuberville liked LBs that way, and it has worked out in our favor in years past… but it worries me a bit.  His stats are impressive in High School and JUCO, but this is the SEC.  I hope he is all that he is hyped to be.

Does anyone think that Aubrey Phillips will play this season?  I have no evidence but I can’t see the NCAA allowing him to "transfer" without penalty, although the practice time will be nice.  We sure could use his size in a backup role this season.

Do any sort of google search on Auburn Football in 2009, and I bet most pages that pop up will be full of questions for this group of Tigers.  While questions linger at almost every position, Chizik and his staff have done all they can in the off season to say and do the right things.  Now it is time to shut all that up and coach.  Let’s see what happens when the kids are on the field, and it is time to execute.

Side note… I almost fell out of my chair with this article by Finebaum.    Some of the comments below are classic.  Personally I see 6-6 for the Tigers, 7-5 being a real possibility.  I am sure that after some practice time, I will really get in there and make some predictions.  Of course injuries or the lack there of sure can change things. Only time will tell.

Yeah

Tubb’s backers were built to stop the spread, and again, that looks like what Auburn has this year. The line is just going to have to play well against Alabama and such…

Who will the quarterback be?

I put the odds like this.

1) Todd 50%
2) Caudle 25%
3) Kodi 20%
4) Anyone else 5%

I think you will see Kodi as third string at best an he will likely transfer.

by SteveFC on Aug 4, 2009 10:27 PM CDT reply actions

I don’t think it will happen, nor do I want him to go, but if Kodi transferred before the season started, would he still have 2 years of elligibility remaining? Or would the fact that he participated in fall practice count against him? He is already a junior and if transferring meant losing a year of elligibility (unless he goes to 1AA), I don’t see the point.

Why Todd?

That's what I'm wondering

I mean unless the guy who did Steve Austin’s surgery (the 6 million dollar man,not stone cold) how is he going to have an arma t all. He couldn’t throw further than 20 yds last year. If Todd is the front runner than I have really missed something.

Having been through.....

similar shoulder problems, I have to think that with the right surgery and rehab he could be very close to 100%, but his missing spring and the fact that he is not very mobile makes me think he is at least 3rd in the QB race unless he really seperates himself in the next week to 10 days I think hes 2nd or 3rd on the depth chart.

A post from Auburn Blog today...

Todd switched out of the freshmen and backups practice group and in with the veterans today. He took Caudle’s place. Interesting development; think it means his arm is looking better that he’s making a move in just a couple of days? I do. Everything I’m reading is saying he looks like a completely different QB………………who knows……

by rn4au on Aug 7, 2009 10:29 PM CDT up reply actions

I saw that.....

I don’t know if its an indication that he’s moving up the depth chart or if they are just seeing what he can do with the projected 2 deep recievers. Either way its gotta be a good thing for Todd. I have no gripe if he’s the guy but I just don’t think a pocket passer is what Malzahn is looking for…..so he’s going to have to shine extra bright to be the starter in my opinion. Everyone thinks we have to have someone that is a stellar passer to run this offense and thats just not so…..he needs to have some arm strength to stretch the field and needs to be able to hit his recievers and backs in the flats on the roll out of play action the rest is reading defenses and game management…..in other words they are going to ask the QB to do what just about every other QB in AU history has been asked to do, “Don’t lose the game”.

We won more games with Todd than with Kodi last season. But then, Todd played in the first several games, during our so-called cupcake stretch. Kodi showed flashes of brilliance and then flashes of… whatever is the opposite of brilliance.

If Todd’s arm strength has improved, he will certainly be the better passer. I also think he has a better grasp of the mental aspects of the schemes. So, with better blocking, he might be the best choice.

Kodi will be useful in certain situations, as long as we have a set of plays that don’t telegraph “Kodi’s gonna run.” We need to do more reverses, triple options, and other old school clever running plays when Kodi is in. Last year we just sent him into a buzz saw.

Kodi can take the physical punishment that running plays inflict on a QB. I don’t lnow if Caudle or Todd can take the pounding. Therefore, protecting the QB will be high priority when Caudle or Todd are in.

Improvements at WR provide some relief from the pressure. But the QB is still gonna get hit, just because they can. It’s part of wearing down the QB over time, like body shots in boxing.

Chris Todd.....

also had the advantage of a heathy defense that was as good most in the SEC. By the time Kodi started the Defense had been worn down and was being decimated by injury. I would have to disagree with Steve with his percentages and his statement that Kodi will transfer. If by some circumstance Kodi does not become the starter, or at least the backup, he will most likely play reciever or H-back and also play QB in particular situations. Once Kodi goes through fall practice he is a junior unless he can lobby for and recieve an extra years eligibility once transferring…….without medical hardship thats unlikely, so I doubt very seriously he transfers. Having said all of this I still expect that kodi is at least even in odds for the starting job with Caudle at this point if not the favorite and Chris Todd is a somewhat distant 3rd choice …. Rollison is a long shot and his redshirt won’t be burned unless there is no other option and it sure as hell shouldn’t be burned for him to be a backup.

QB / Freshman

All new managers of any business/sport want their own people working for them. If Rollison is a quick study, can limit errors, I expect him to win the job. Our depth of talent is down. We are retooling, and I would anticipate the freshman to contribute early and often.

Injuries will tell the Tale....

Whether Auburn goes bowling, or has a very good season, will depend greatly on the the injury bug.
“we aren’t very deep at many positions” stated CGC over and over.
But boy if they can stay healthy….

Our D

Does anyone really see us being able to stop the run this year? Or being able to cover in the secondary? It used to be you didn’t have to worry about the AU D, but coming into this season I’m nervous.

Our D will be dominant again....

I am not worried about the D-line and the run or the Coverage with our D-backs. I am worried about depth at LB and somewhat at D-back although Demond Washington being cleared greatly helped our depth and if Taikwon Paige is cleared that will help shore up the D-backfield depth as well.

As long as we have enough depth to play dime and nickle packages...

I think we will be decent in the secondary. But if the injury situation is anything like last year and we end up with linebackers trying to cover slot recievers, we could be in trouble. The play of the safeties worries me a little, but with another year of experience under their belts, I think they should improve on the mistakes of last year.

I agree with Todd about the D-line. I think they should be a solid group. Again, depth could be an issue their too, but I think they can hold their own otherwise.
