The Ones That Got Away? Angling for the Truth in Preferential Treatment Bay

Who's heads are gonna roll this time?
This blog was stone cold silent last week as news came out of the possibility of Alabama players Julio Jones and Mark Ingram receiving extra benefits in the form of a fishing trip given by a man down on the coast earlier this year. While some think that we may relish in bad news coming out of Tuscaloosa, I think we were relatively objective when the sanctions over their textbook scandal came out in June. But not wanting to constantly be going negative against our western cousins, we've tried here at TET to focus on other things this summer, but lately, I've felt as lonely as an unemployed tabloid writer when Britney Spears decides to go on her next panty-less raid. And with the suspensions of Jones and Ingram still up in the air for the big game in the Georgia Dome this weekend, I think it's now relevant to talk about.
What do we know so far? Curtis Anderson, a 56-year old white, self-described 'good' friend of Julio's, is said to neither be an Alabama alum/booster/fan/whatever, but he does hail from Jones' neck of the woods, in Athens. And since he isn't affiliated with the school, case closed--no violation. Right? Not so fast. my friend. Am I the only one that thinks something stinks like yesterday's bait box? The university's investigation, which sought guidance from the NCAA, has now been turned over to the SEC, which will most certainly then turn it's findings over to the NCAA. You think all three of these parties should get on the AT&T Family Plan, with rollover minutes?
Here are some questions I'd like to know the answer to but seems that no one is asking:
- How big was this boat they went out on? Was it owned by Anderson or did he just pay for the trip? There's a difference between a fishing trip between friends and a charter.
- Who else was on the boat? Just the three of them? If there were others, what are their affiliations?
- How long has Anderson known Jones and how long has he pretended to not know he's a football player?
- Who the hell is in charge of the compliance office at the Capstone now? Aren't things like this covered in the first page of the pamphlet?
- What is the University valuing these benefits at?
- What did Jones and Ingram catch and where are the pics?
"Just great", Nick Saban must be thinking, after after signing a new contract recently that will attempt to button him down in Tuscaloosa well into his Medicare eligibility. I say attempt, because with Saban, there is no buyout and he is free to leave at anytime, a risk that comes with handing a coach the keys to the kingdom--that he might mail them back to you one day, like a Miami condo speculator to his mortgage company. With Saban and the success that he had last year, I'd expect him to stay in place for the foreseeable future with the exception of one thing: the continuing petty bull$h*t that keeps blindsiding him and tarnishing his image, if not the university's.
Look, I don't like this constant flirtation with the NCAA that the Tide is exhibiting like what seems to be non-stop. I want them on the field--all of them. I don't want any excuses down the road if their two best players are held up for even one game. It's a distraction to the conference and the state, and it gives even more ammo to your enemies, who are accumulating it lately like Montana survivoralists on Obama reelection eve.
Alabama can't afford to use ineligible players, so expect both of them to be held out as a precaution by Saban if a decision isn't forthcoming from Indianapolis by Saturday. I expect it will be, the only question being whether on speed dial or text message.

Even though it's Alabama
this will just give the NCAA another reason to postpon USC’s investigations.
I read where Julio worked at a marina prior to signing with Alabama and he met the guy through there. I dont know how credible that was, but if the NCAA wants to penalize a team for a fishing trip during the offseason that didn’t involve a booster, obviously they have an agenda set out to terrorize southern teams. See Alabama, Florida State, Oklahoma while the worst case (USC’s of course) is still untouched.
Your post has the credibility of a fish story...
… if your knowledge of the situation is so minimal that you think Athens is in the neighborhood of where Julio grew up.
Got one on the line...
I read a few articles that implied that this Anderson guy knew Jones from back home. Jones is from Foley. Anderson is from Athens. You’re right—I didn’t consult my Alabama atlas.
You guys try a little harder with these fishing metaphors…

My only issue is this
If he has known this kid for years, how the hell does he not know he is a big time football player? Julio Jones was on every paper in the state and on ESPN constantly a February ago, there is no way he doesn’t know. That part is a lie.
If that is all it was, that is fine.
Y'all need to either reread the article or learn how to read.
Anderson has steadfastly claimed that they are only good friends, and that he is not a football fan and did not know Jones was a football prospect when he first met him.
He didn’t know Jones was a football prospect when he first met him. He knew he was afterward, and I’m sure he did when they went on the fishing trip. But even then, the guy says he doesn’t like football, he’s definitely not a booster, so what’s the issue is what I’d like to know.
I must say though,
this post kind of surprised me. When I saw the link and was going to read it, I half expected y’all would be wanting Bama to get the death penalty.
I couldn't care less.
I honestly couldn’t give a crap whether Jones and Ingram play or not. I don’t care if Saban is there for the rest of his career. Let Alabama get the top class every year and with Saban running the show, they will lose 1 to 2 games a year and on a lucky year, they will win a championship. This sound familiar? Sure does, that is exactly what he did at LSU.
Jones and Ingram are good players and shouldn’t be punished for a fishing trip, this isn’t a car, it isn’t a job or a house for their parents, this is a fishing trip. If you want to look at poor discipline, go back to the Upshaw arrest, but you shouldn’t fault a couple teenagers for going on a fishing trip.
I don’t care if Saban is there for the rest of his career. Let Alabama get the top class every year and with Saban running the show, they will lose 1 to 2 games a year and on a lucky year, they will win a championship. This sound familiar? Sure does, that is exactly what he did at LSU.
Um, does that not sound desireable as a fan?
It does.
But for the talent level he managed he is a let down. For LSU, sadly enough they are better off with Les Miles.
What! LOL
He won a NC and 2 SEC Championships and he’s a let down!! Dude you need to stop talking…
Scoring against Alabama will be like birthing a child: rare, painful, and messy. - The Ghost of Jay Cutler
I stick with what I said.
His championship was a lucky fluke that he got to play for it, it took three teams losing major upsets in the last two weeks to get them in. He did win two SECs and that is impressive enough, but if you sign the top talent year in and year out, you should be a top team year in and year out.
I heard a stat that doesn’t seem right on ESPN tonight, Saban has never had back to back 10 win seasons? Seriously?
Set the hook
No Auburn or SEC fan with half a mind would want Alabama or any other sister school to land the death penalty. The consequences of such an occasion would devastate the conference for decades. It would severly diminish these rich TV contracts and hamper any conference school from competing for a MNC. So clean up your act and quit drawing attention to yourself.

Your dumber then you look
regardless of what sport this guy likes or if he is a booster or not. The fact is Jones got something done as a favor for him… And now the NCAA is trying to decide what to believe and how to take action. Im sure most players that accept money get it from people they dont know
ALABAMA leading the NCAA with infractions since 1994
You know what I look like? That's a little creepy.
There’s no NCAA rule against having “something done as a favor” if there is no athletic preferential treatment going on. The guy’s not a booster and doesn’t even care for football. Even someone as dumb as me can make sense of the fact that nothing wrong was done if what has been reported is true.
Congratulations
You got me on a grammatical mistake… WOW….
Read the rules
Representatives of Alabama athletic interest cannot provide an "extra benefit" or special arrangement to a prospect OR to an enrolled student-athlete. The extra benefits rules for prospects, enrolled student-athletes, their relatives and friends states that you:
· May not give them cash or loans in any amount.
· May not sign or co-sign a note to arrange a loan.
· May not give them gifts of any kind including on special occasions such as birthdays, Christmas, or Valentine’s Day.
· May not give them free or reduced services, rentals, or purchase of any type (e.g. clothing, airline tickets, laundry, car repair, hair cuts, meals in restaurants, etc.).
· May not give or provide use of an automobile.
· May not provide them hospitality in your home other than for an occasional home meal.
· May not invite them to your summer or winter home to go water skiing, sailing, skiing, etc.
- May not loan them your sail boat, jet skis, RVs, etc.
· May not provide them within or outside of the campus area (e.g., from the airport to campus, to summer jobs, etc.).
· May not entertain or contact a prospect’s family on or off campus.
· May not provide an employment arrangement for prospect’s relative.
· May not provide free of reduced cost of housing.
· May not provide a benefit connected with on or off-campus housing (e.g., television sets of stereo equipment, specialized recreational facilities, etc.).
· May not provide tickets to an athletic event, concert, of other events at the College or within the community.
· May not provide money for a guarantee of bail or bond.
· May not provide promises of financial aid for post graduation education.
· May not provide promises of employment after college graduation.
Now the question is does the NCAA believe this guy or not?
ALABAMA leading the NCAA with infractions since 1994
Do you have some type of learning problem? Seriously?
These rules only apply to representatives of Alabama athletics. The guy that took them on a fishing trip was not a rep of Alabama. Jesus Christ!
My bet is that you never graduated from a university, but if you did happen to graduate from AU, it makes all the sense in the world.
HOW DO YOU KNOW?
that he isn’t a Representative, Booster, Or Affiliated with the University? Because he said so?
I swear… Clearly your the ignorant one.
For the record i Graduated in 07 With a Professional Degree. Im pretty sure you never set foot on the Tuscaloosa campus
ALABAMA leading the NCAA with infractions since 1994
Maybe because the University said he wasn't, and that they were reported all their findings on it to the NCAA?
That might be the first place to figure that out. No reason for Bama to make a false claim that the NCAA would be able to discover as false in no time.
Maybe do a little reading on the situation before you say something like that next time.
In fact, you don't even have to leave this post to figure out that the guy wasn't affiliated with the school...
And since he isn’t affiliated with the school
.
READ BEFORE YOU TALK!!!
But again… “they Reported” is such a weak claim
Isn’t it in their best interest to report that?

but all stories, from the university to the media outlets, are all reporting that the guy is not in any affiliated with the university

How is going on a fishing trip with a friend a “favor”?? I go on fishing trips with friends often. Does that mean they’re doing me a favor? No. It means I’ve taken a trip with my friends on a boat.
Yeah
I know a lot of college kids who go on deep sea fishing trips with their middle aged “friends”. They aren’t obligated to touch, but it is expected.

Sounds like a Drum to me
You know the fish called a Drum? Fun to catch because they fight like hell but you cant really eat it… there are too many small bones so filleting them is damn near impossible.
I think this story is like a Drum. It is always sort of fun to hear that the Capstone is out of control. Yet the NCAA knows that they cannot “eat” them. In my mind this is a non story, but I have some of the same questions you do about how the two know each other.
If Julio and Ingram are out for the VT game, I for one will be pissed. I want to see a good game, and while Bama still should win without them. I really enjoy watching Julio play. Although I can do without the man crushes that the commentators normally have with him.
If you are a War Damn Eagle, you can War Damn anything.
The schhool of fish, er uh investi(gators)...
surrounding this team, must be enormous.
I have to suspect that the NCAA only has a certain number of employees. They can’t all be in Alabama, can they?
I agree 100% with you that Auburn wants to play against UAT and win without them having excuses. Ditto on the bad press to the best athletic conference in America.
For what it’s worth, I still maintain that Mal Moore is the problem here. A lack of departmental control.
Yes, because players going on a fishing trip with a friend always constitutes lack of control. You are a bright one.
my remarks have nothing to do with a fishing trip...
except where asked to provide a fishing reference. The overall state of affairs with Alabama’s athletic department has indeed shown a lack of control.
Because you may not agree with that does NOT make me “the bright one” here!
"An armed man is a citizen. An unarmed man is a subject"-Thomas Jefferson
these guys need to learn to swim with the sharks
Even if Anderson is completely clueless about SEC football, which I find hard to believe since he lives in the South, the two players should have known better than to accept this trip.
I believe Jones is from Foley, so it doesn’t wash that Anderson knows him from around town, but it would make sense logistically that he worked on fishing charters during high school. Still, if Anderson knew these guys well enough to take them out fishing, it seems that it would have come up that they were football players.
I don’t know anything about Jones’ family, but from what I know about Ingram’s dad, he didn’t have a very good example of how to act.
Nothing to see here...
The guy said he didn’t know Julio was a football player “when he met him”. The point being that he didn’t seek Julio’s friendship BECAUSE he was a football player. I admit, the story sounds weird, but is it possible that Julio befriended a disabled man while working at the marina, and subsequently went on a fishing trip with him as a way of a) having fun on a fishing trip, and b) helping the disabled man to have fun on a fishing trip?
yeah
you will never get a lot of these flamers on here to think it is anything other than a violation. If the tables were turned you aubies wouldn’t be singing the same tune. Point is, Bama, Julio, and Ingram are gonna be just fine and come IB day, you will be the one’s acting like a “fish outta water”

this is an AU site and we discuss things within our context not yours (and I really don’t give a rats as what yours is so spare me). That being said I have said many times that this is, at least from what we have been told so far, much ado about nothing. Feck em all and feed em fish heads…..and yes thats as close as I’m getting to a fish metaphor.

…..I’m not sure Saban will suspend those two for Tech. I’m thinking it may be the first half of the titanic showdown with the Mean Green of North Texas.
If the two are deemed ineligible by the NCAA.....
then the ramifications of playing two players that were ineligible could be severe. Surely the all mighty garden nome would protect his program and wait and see rather than put the program at risk……I hope that the NCAA gets their head out of their ass and gives them a decision prior to kickoff and we can get on with enjoying the rest of the season without further bumbling….and yeah they should be up in USC’s grill putting the beatdown probation on that program.
I would have gone to bammer if my grades hadn't been good enough to go to AU
This is not a violation
This whole situation is fish-tarded. A fishing trip? I read the al.com article where the man was unable to get himself into the boat. I also read that he isn’t even a bama fan. Play the guys, this is nothing and will amount to nothing.
How did this even become a story?
(Your Team Here) sucks
This is no boating accident...
Are you really ready to bet Saban’s tenure on another possible misstep like this—having to vacate a game down the road?
Is it not a violation? Who says the litmus test is being a fan?
Why are you guys constantly being plagued by these things? How much smoke can there be with no fire? STOP it already!

This? Seriously?
Two players get on a boat with some guy that is not affiliated with the university in anyway whatsoever and you call that smoke? Are we at the point where the NCAA has to follow players home to make sure they don’t pick out pennies at the gas station? The litmus test is common sense.
And what is with you and this Saban tenure crap? You keep beating the “Saban’s going to leave” drum with every other post about Alabama. Wishful thinking perhaps?
The reason this keeps coming up is that we are seriously paranoid at this point and want to show the NCAA that we are willing to be transparent. Until a media source indicates anything other than “what might happen” this is nothing.

I don’t wish Saban to leave, but I think you guys will force him to go before you fire him. I do however scoff at the way you’ve sold yourself out just to get and keep him. This new contract? More money, but no longer term. Wouldn’t mean anything anyway, as he has no buyout and can leave when he wants, no questions asked.

Hey we’re an organization that’s got the money. We got a coach that is currently bringing in recruits and has our team in every national conversation. We project the image of an elite program. It’s worth the risk with Saban. You say, “but your not elite yet!” Hey opinions and Awbarn girls, everyone can have one and they all stink.
Look at the ESPN coverage! Week one game of the nation, all our big conference games being hailed as “Impact games” on the national scene. He’s in a Gameday commercial for Bear Bryant’s sake. And before you call it “dumb commercial gimmick” I would like to remind you of a certain limo.
