Who Is Having Fun?

I am not really one to have a rebuttal to another person’s article but ole Finebaum wrote an article here that really got me thinking.  If you don’t want to read his gibberish, I will sum it up for you.  "Calm down Auburn fans!  You have beaten no one yet.  You can talk trash when you beat some one significant."  He takes a shot at West Virginia by saying he already picked Auburn to win and he pokes at the mediocrity of his alma mater of Tennessee as well.   So Paul, tell me when Auburn fans can get excited?  Your show talked about how Auburn would struggle against LA Tech.  How did that work out for you?  Do we have to beat LSU at night in Baton Rouge, or will they be overrated or something.  What if we can somehow beat Alabama… will you find a way to downplay that win as well?  You drive me nuts.

Over Tommy Tuberville’s tenure at Auburn there is little doubt that Auburn fans got used to winning.  Granted last year was an overwhelming flop, winning consistently is one thing that Auburn has done over the last 10+ years.  With that said, Auburn has not had the aggressiveness that the 2009 squad has shown in a long long time… maybe not ever.  In the magical 2004 season, Auburn was dominate in eleven of the thirteen games.  The Tigers struggled against LSU (10-9 win), and had two bad halves one against Tennessee in the SEC Championship Game and the other against Virginia Tech in the Sugar Bowl.  Although those 2004 Tigers owed other teams that season, they never kept the hammer down for four quarters.

The 2009 version of the Auburn Tigers seem to play to win ever single down.  If they win every play, there is little doubt they will win the game, right?  You can see that attitude on the players’ faces, coaches’ faces, and fan’s faces.  Whether you are sitting in Jordan-Hare, or in front of your flat panel, you can feel it.  Hell, you can see it.  Watch the coaching staff after something happens.  They are jumping around like the players are.  After Coleman’s pick-six… Trooper Taylor was going bananas.  I could see it if he was Ted Roof, Tracy Rocker, Philip Lolley, or Tommy Thigpin, after all they are defensive coaches.  But it was Trooper Taylor who was leading the excitement.  Granted I say "leading" the excitement everyone on the sidelines was ecstatic.  Even Gene Chizik was going nuts.  I for one love it.  On the flip side of that, after the punt block for a TD, Chizik was in the ear of Boulware.  That shows me that this staff has passion, and the best way to lead is to lead by example.  If the staff has passion, the players will play with passion, and the fans will follow suit.  Tell me the last time you saw that sort of passion from a Head Coach on the Auburn sidelines for something other than a bad call.  You better think really hard.

What are Auburn fans supposed to do at this point in the season?  The players are playing their collective hearts out.  The offensive line, which was faced much criticism last season, has turned out to be nothing short of fantastic.  The defense is thin but doing well under the circumstances.  The coaching staff is about as energetic as any staff I have ever seen on any team, much less and Auburn team.  I am as happy as a dog in the sunshine right now.  Will that change if Auburn loses to the Mountaineers?  I doubt it.  It might change my thoughts for the rest of the season on the Win/Loss scale, but that will be about it.  Things are not going to be this good all season, most Auburn fans understand that.  There are going to be bumps in the road.  As long as the coaching staff can continue to make adjustments and the players continue to play hard, I am going to be happy.

There is one thing that the 2009 version of the Auburn Tigers are doing win or lose.  They are fun to watch.  Even the old school fans are laughing and excited to see that Gus Malzahn has lined up for our viewing pleasure.  Hopefully the days of seeing a run off tackle for 2 yards, run up the middle for a loss of 5, slant pass complete for 6 yards and punt are over.

This Auburn squad may not have beaten anyone yet Paul… but they sure have brought the fun back to the Plains.

Sadly, Paul Finebaum was diagnosed with idiocy years ago

So I choose not to listen to this guy. The people that take his opinion to heart are the ones who keep his program going. Do I really need to say who they are?

I couldn't agree more with this
The 2009 version of the Auburn Tigers seem to play to win ever single down. If they win every play, there is little doubt they will win the game, right?

It’s been refreshing, to say the least

Screw Paul Finebaum.

Frankly, I would almost be more concerned if he thought that we were the new sliced bread. We have every reason to be excited! The coaches are passionate; the team is unified. This time last year, we were winning, yes, but the wins were squeakers. This year are wins are unquestionably solid. And if our team plays with heart every game, win or lose, you can’t help but feel energized by the change!

Great article! I don't listen to Finebammer anymore...

The redneck’s calling the show to poke fun at the other side gets annoying and there is absolutely no value to the show anymore. I used to enjoy listening to some of the interviews but even that has seemed slanted since Saban’s arrival and I just lost interest.

Now, about my team!! I am so excited about the offense and the fact that now we can have the best of both worlds…Great O & D in the same game…and I just love to score a lot of points!! It is so much fun to watch!! Help the opponant up and then knock the holy crap out of them again, let them get close, then score 14 quickly and put them back down again…we need some more talent to be able to do this all season, but I see BIG BIG things in store for us down the road…and recruiting? Just wait till recruits get a look at what the future holds too…we are’nt going to have any problems recruiting to play for this coaching staff at all.

by rn4au on Sep 15, 2009 9:29 PM CDT reply actions

I don't think anyone here takes that guy seriously

Finebaum knows where his bread money comes from. Who cares? That guy can’t honestly say that he wasn’t entertained by the offensive performance Gus Malzahn has been serving up these past two weeks. Honestly, I just don’t get (putting aside my obvious bias for Auburn) how anyone could watch that and not be excited with the possibility of more to come.

But forget that guy and forget the polls. Auburn fans are jacked up and that’s all that matters.

by flemico on Sep 15, 2009 11:27 PM CDT reply actions

He's got a point TBH

Just look at Tennessee. They were in the exact same position. Everyone was so impressed with the win over Western Kentucky. They said, “sure, we realize it was only western kentucky…”, then they would go on about how they’ve never gained as many yards as they did against WK, Crompton is a new man, and how Crompton had as many TD’s in that game as he did all last year, etc, etc. But then comes in UCLA with a defense that can stop the run and pressure the QB and everything falls apart. Now they’re back to calling their QB the worst in D1.

Maybe the same will happen to you guys. Maybe not.

You missed the point

We’re not saying we’re great, we’re saying we’re having fun. We aren’t worried about the winning and losing so much as we are simply having fun. It’s not a miserable thing to watch this team this year and you can see their hearts are in it. And, of course you’ll take Finebaum’s side. Neither one of you guys understands the emotion of the game or a certain thing called FUN.

And nothing you said there is contradicted by what PF said in the article.
So Auburn fans, be happy. Enjoy the moment. However, keep your boasting to a low roar until you beat someone who matters.

I seem to recall Bama fans "boasting" the minute

Saban was hired. Why didn’t you guys wait until you beat someone who matters (or anyone at all)?

This has got to be the dumbest conversation I’ve ever seen. Telling a fanbase to not get excited, or as you call it “boast” (as if I’m running around telling people AU is gonna with the MNC this year) when their team is winning games that some “experts” predicted they would lose, and winning them convincingly, is ridiculous. The fact is, every team is still an unknown. Just look at OSU. Convincing win over what was thought to be a good team, then a loss to Houston! Then you have the opposite with Michigan a few years ago losing to App State, then going on to have a pretty good year and beating UF in the bowl game. Two weeks is not enough data to tell anything about any team. So, perhaps you should hold off on boasting about a Bama team who, for all we know, has not beaten anyone who matters yet.

Ugh...

Well, I’m not going to argue with someone who makes childish points at best. We’re simply saying that we are having fun right now, something we didn’t have last year. Yet, you feel it necessary to give reasons why we shouldn’t be having fun currently. The POINT IS THAT WE ARE HAVING FUN, I cannot say it any better than that. If you cannot understand that, then you aren’t worth the time it would take to sit and explain it to you.

by Todd92 on Sep 16, 2009 3:21 PM CDT up reply actions

you are predicting?

Auburn beats Alabama?

We’ll just see how your quick paced offense will exhaust your defense by keeping them on the field in close score games. T.O.P. will look like 40 min. to 20 min. against a strong defense (with AU having the 20). Exhausted defenses get injured. Auburn will be a shell of what it currently is by year’s end. That’s just my prediction.

If you can manage to get around those probabilities (not just possible, but probable), then we’ll talk.

Alabama can not stand it...

Alabama just can not stand the fact that Auburn is so excited about the team this year. They were all pumped up to see our new loosing coach fail miserably and us have a miserable loosing season. The fact of the matter is, that might still happen. We don’t know. But it has’nt happened YET. ..until it does, get used to the attention being on Auburn and forget about , no matter what happens, the absense of excitement and about us going away. We have something special here and you guys need to get over yourselves and worry about your own team. The fact that you are even over here on this side speaks volumes.

I primarily post on the bama site, but also UT and this one. Whoopedy do. However, it is interesting that you bring up jealousy. Why do all you barners hate Finebaum? Oh thats BS and you know it

Finebaum is a douche. he says whatever gets him ratings. It just happens that it is the bammers that come out in droves to listen to his bs and call in and talk to him like they’re old friends. So of course it is skewed. Even when bama was struggling and AU was on top it was that way.

He has become rich with making people loving and hating him, Although his interview are horrible now. With Barbara Dooley…. what a moron…. and i dont care what saban eats for breakfast. I actually listen more to the early morning because they have the press conferences with the coaches and then some real analyist

If your looking for a good Radio show online....

You should try Sportscall.com at 5-7 est. They stream the show live and its a great stream. Sometimes on my computer it hangs up with windows when getting started, but i just hit “Don’t Send” Error and reclick the show and after a try or 2 it runs fine. Good show with good hosts.

I couldn’t have said it better. These were my exact thoughts after this past weekends game against MSU. It can be seen, heard, and HELL it can be said “tasted” as well. That being the taste of victory. These Tigers of 09 have a spark I have been longing for since 04. Their desire to be here for all 4 quarters & trying to WIN is definitely evident. Even after the blocked punt that led to a score. I saw no quitting or loss of spirit. If nothing else I saw a renewed fight. Great post!!!! And as always……WAR DAMN EAGLE!!!

I refuse to read or listen to that waste...

That’s exactly what PF is, elephant excrement.
The last time I saw an Auburn coach this excited on the side lines was when our defense sacked Brody just before the half.
I find pleasure in knowing that our offense can actually score points in all four quarters. In the occasional slugfest Auburn finds itself in, this team actually gives us the fans HOPE!
Let me tell you that alone is FUN!

you know the only reason finebaum runs his mouth is the reaction that people give him. talk radio is full of hot air that dances out of past statements, and on that rare occasion when they are right and all others are wrong, they build themselves up just a little more. he feeds the anger against him and the small mindedness that actually believes him. the best way to silence him is to not acknowledge him. let him talk his talk. most often he gets proven wrong, until people try to point out his one sided take, and then he wins. it’s all karma.
