How old is the "War Eagle Flying around the Stadium" Tradition?

I was reading on another message board where people were discussing the age of this tradition.  I personally, can't remember a time when Auburn didn't have the eagle flying around the stadium for the pregame, but that might just show my age more than anything.

Does anyone know when they actually started that tradition?

Also, my understanding is that the origin of this tradition dates back to the Civil War.  is that the case?

The flying of the eagle isn’t too old. I am pretty sure they started it after the Olympics in Utah a few years back. I also think the eagles name are Tiger & Spirit. This link should tell you more http://auburntigers.cstv.com/trads/aub-trads-wareagle.html

If I recall...

It started at the Georgia Game in 2000. That was when Tiger “War Eagle VI” sort of freaked out and landed on the student side goal post.

If you are a War Damn Eagle, you can War Damn anything.

The eagle that flew in Utah was Tiger!

We started the eagle flying around the stadium before that, in 2000 like Zach said I think.

Unfortunately, we weren’t the first to fly an eagle in a stadium.

Before someone come in to dis our traditions.....

it should be made clear that the Eagle has been present for games ever since I can remember…..at least the late sixties for me. Before that someone else will have to dig up the info. I know the first time I saw him fly around the stadium it was one of the coolest things, if not the coolest, I had ever witnessed as part of the pageantry of college football. I also loved going by the old aviary every day on the lawn between Haley Center and Parker hall and checking him out……what an amazing animal.

I would have gone to bammer if my grades hadn't been good enough to go to AU

Our Pregame Eagle flight

gives me goosebumps everytime I see it. Its one of those things that doesn’t lose its affect on you. I love it and I think it should be if it isn’t already, considered one of the best college traditions in the country.

Pre-game flight

began during the 2000 season. The whole history can been seen in this wikipedia article. Wikipedia, coincidentally, was created by an Auburn guy.

The eagle has been in the stadium for decades, but he’s flying in his 10th season.

In my view...

This is the best college football tradition in America. I mean, who else has their own bird fly in the world series?
