Now We Know What To Expect From These Tigers!!!

Or do we???? Last night at Jordan-Hare had to be the most  riveting, emotionally wrenching, gut-knotting game I've seen in years. West Virginia had us overmatched in every facet of the game except kicking....but we still won. That says a lot about the coaches and more importantly it says a great deal about the team's character and desire.

We should not have won that game last night but we hung in and continued to play for 60 minutes and were ready to capitalize when WVU decided to give the game away.  Every team has a bad game, (USC and BYU anyone??) but can you win that game? Auburn didn't deserve that win last night from an X's and O's standpoint but boy did they deserve to win based on effort and making their opponent pay for making mistakes. Thats called making your own luck and there isn't another attribute more necessary to win in the SEC than that.

Based on last nights game, here is what I know about these Tigers. Ted Roof needs to make anybody trying to tackle a shoulder pad, run until they puke. We were horrible last night trying to tackle big guys, Jarrett Brown and Jock Sanders up around their shoulder pads and were consequently thrown off or pushed down he field an extra 5-10 by them. Thats got to stop. It was clear from early in the game that we needed to contain Jarrett Brown but didn't  have the ability to do so.

The line did a good job of bullrushing up the middle but that just pushed Brown to the perimeter where he made plays with his arm and his feet all night. Unfortunatley Josh Bynes, Craig Stevens and Eltoro Freeman (yes, he was on the field most of the night, not that you could tell) mostly came into the picture 10 yards down field. We've got to find a scheme to minimize our LB's ineffectiveness....that scheme may unfortunately require us scoring 40+ pts a game.

This is going to catch up with us eventually because when your LB's are ineffective, the defense spends all night on the field watching the opposing offense march down the field...and Gus isn't going to help them in that regard either. On the plus side, when we kept Brown in the pocket, we made him make mistakes and our secondary did a good job of making him pay when he made an ill-advised throw.

Unlike UGA's DB's, our DB's catch the ball when they get their hands on it. If we had been able to contain Brown most of the night, I think the game would have been much different...and low scoring. The defensive line played very well again and was the difference in the game for us. Colemen, Fairley and RIcks has outstanding games and were pushing into the backfield all night. I expected Devine to get his yards but was really disappointed he was able to break off that 70 yarder so early in the game.

Amazingly we seemed surprised by Brown and Devine's speed and elusiveness. I guess thats the difference between practice and game speed. Game ball goes to the defense for their inspired play, most notably Craig Stevens and Jake Ricks for those Mountaineer slaying int's that won the game for us. Roof should have the LB's doing Oklahoma drills during practice all next week.

On the offense here is what I know:

Chris Todd can not carry this team. I knew this before, but last night really drove that home. Now I'm not going to give Chris a hard time, in fact I think he played very well considering we were unable to esablish our running game.  Chris made several plays on third and long and continues to find Darvin Adams open in the red zone, which amazingly nobody has taken away from us...yet.

He is able to read the field and make the throws he needs to....when he has time. When Chris is blitzed or has pressure in his face, he is a different QB. He gets Riverdancy when the rush is closing in on him and focuses on one area of the field hoping someone will get open. Too often last night he held on to the ball too long, when he knew the rush was behind him and closing and took drive killing sacks.

That being said, I was impressed with how he managed the game and handled the rush in the second half, stepping up  in the pocket to buy himself some more time. He made some bad rows but not bad throws into coverage, except for the int. in the second qtr. If anything Chris showed last night, he can be the difference maker on this team IF we can keep the running game going.

Wes Byrum was exceptional again, making all the kicks we needed him to make, which is impressive on a soggy and slippery turf. I don't care how well the field drains, being able to plant your foot and drive a 46 yd field goal through the dead middle of the uprights was impressive last night. He looks like a totally different kicker from a year ago and I think he was the key in keeping the game from getting out of hand last night. If Wes misses either of those kicks in the first half last night, it would have been a complete momentum and confidence killer for the team.  Wes' ability to make those kicks made us believe we were still in it....if we could just hold them. And we did. Great Job Wes!!!

Here is what I still don't know:

Can our DB's really defend against a poised pocket passer? While our guys did a good job against Jarrett Brown ,when he was forced to stay in the pocket, Brown made poor decisions and even worse throws time and again. Brown only made his hay on the perimeter of the pocket or throwing in the middle of the field, where our invisible linebackers play. Fortunately we may not have to learn the answer to this question until we travel to Fayetteville.

Is Mario Fannin a vital cog of our offense or not? I thought going into the year that we needed to get Mario Fannin more involved with the offense for it to be successful. Last night showed again that he can be a difference maker in game, and that play seemed to really throw the Mountaineers into the pit of despair. They never really recovered.  We traded haymakers last night, but ours in the 10th round seemed to be the one that won the fight. The problem is, I just don't see us trying to get Fannin the ball enough.

Onterrio McCalebb had a great couple of games to start the season, but he was not the same back last night. Is McCalebb the lightning to Ben Tate's thunder or is he not going to be effective against the faster SEC defenses? Onterrio was bottled up last night and was never able to get into the open and show his speed.  Was that an aberration or a sign he isn't really ready for the SEC?

Can we really establish the pass with the run? I was shocked that we were so ineffective running the ball last night. The mountaineers were not confused by the machinations and fakes taking place in the backfield and just used those delays to swarm into the backfield. I think they have an advantage practicing against the spread everyday but it was clear they were going to make us beat them with Chris Todd. Can we win against our rivals that employ that same strategy? The long standing criticism of the spread offense is that it's fakes, misdirections, and east/west movement can't excell against the speed of SEC defenses. It did well against Miss St, not so good against WVU. How well will it do against, Tenn, Arky, and LSU???

Overall I like the spirit and desire of our team. In the college game thats almost as important as a sound gameplan. Last year we lose this game 49-10, guaranteed. We were so divided, and waiting for the next bad thing to happen that we could not, and would not respond to a challenge.

Last night, not only did we respond, we overcame, turned the pressure back on our opponent, challenged them to respond and defeated them. Regardless of what happens the rest of the season, Coach Chizik and his staff have established an attitude that will pay dividends in the long run. I don't know yet if this is a 10-2, 9-3 or 8-4 team, but we are going to beat the folks we should beat and probably a couple we shouldn't. Coach Chizik, you and your staff are off to a great start.....LETS KEEP IT UP!!!

I will admit that I underestimated WVU.

I had no idea that Jarrett Brown was a horse, and he will make an awesome NFL quarterback. I read on Al.com this morning that Todd suffered from the flu earlier this week…so who else on the team had it?

I agree with most of what you said, but Mario Fannin’s hands are a little unpredictable. Twice he dropped the ball when he should not have last night. Not saying that mistakes never happen, but these were crucial drops. Also the O needs to protect Todd more. Ben Tate missed a tackle and that led to a Todd sack. I don’t know what to say about theD. As much as they make you pay and cringe, they make things happen and never gave up. This Auburn team has much more character than I ever anticipated. I think it is safe to say that Auburn football is back and it is fun again!

I'm an unabashed Mario Fan!!

I’ll admit. I just see so much potential, that we aren’t tapping into…maybe its not there.
I guess thats why I say I don’t know if he is vital to us or not.

I think I came across a little more critical of Todd than I wanted to…I really think he played well. I don’t want anyone to think he didn’t do a good job, because his play was instrumental in us winning the game. He converted turnovers into points and that was vital for us.

True enough, even though I had to up my blood pressure medication, what a fun game to watch. Auburn football is indeed fun again!!

On what day did the Lord create Bear Bryant and couldn't he have rested on that day too?

Our offensive tackles were getting beat off the line every time
  1. (don’t know his name, he’s the RT) and Ziemba did a horrible job with WV’s defensive ends

Whoops

That was supposed to say “number 75”, not “1.”

Disagree with you completely w/ your thoughts on Todd.

No, he isn’t Colt McCoy or Tim Tebow but he won the game for us last night along with our great secondary play on defense. No one else in QB core would have made the throws he made into the endzone and on our 3rd and long conversions that were set up by our poor running game last night. Chris Todd was a hero of last night’s game and i hope more people realize it.

Sorry to disagree but....

Chris did not win the game for us. He kept us in the game and did a good job managing the game but unless Mario motors and Craig Stevens puts the dagger in their heart ,WVU most likely wins that game. Chris gets the stats for the pass to Mario but that was Mario’s touchdown, not Todd’s.
Chris has played very well and has been a critical factor in our wins but I’m sure you can agree that we can’t RELY on him to be THE guy for us. If we don’t have a running game stacking up close to 200 yards a game we aren’t going to be successful. Chris just isn’t that good to make our receivers better. This isn’t an indictment of Chris, he just can’t make up for the lack of a running game.

I don't know what you would call a game winning performance......

but Chris Todd throwing for a career high and 4 TD’s is a game winning performance. “he just can’t make up fo rthe lack of a running game”? What the hell do you think he did……our running game last night was anything but stellar. I don’t understand the mentality of people trying to naysay when Todd had a very solid if not great game……every QB makes some bad throws and decisions and Todd kept those to a minimum and made the plays he had to for us to get a W. And before you say it was the Defense that won the game……the defense wouldn’t have had a game to put away had Todd not put up the points to get us that close and not only that Todd woudn’t have had to put up as many points had the Defense been fundamentally sound in its tackling ……that was undoubtedly the worst tackling game I have ever witnessed from AU. We did something that has rarely been seen on the Plains last night…..get into a shootout, come from behind and win and a large part of that is because of the clutch play of Chris Todd.

I would have gone to bammer if my grades hadn't been good enough to go to AU

And Fannin showed why he isn't going to be a major contributor at RB.....

he failed to hit the holes when he lined up at RB and when there wasn’t a hole he didn’t punch the creases……instead he stopped behind the line and danced. Mario is a big powerful back with lots of speed if there isn’t a hole then hit the crease and make your own damn it…..get 2 or 3 hard yards and get ready fast to do it again.

Easy on Fannin

So, a quarterback can have some bad passes, but a running back can’t have a couple of bad runs? Nobody ran the ball great last night. McCaleb didn’t have the best game ever either. Mario Fannin is an athlete. Plus, he never really got a chance to have any continuity going either. Give the guy bit of a break. Besides, where is the love on Fannin’s outstanding run after the catch? The guy did play quarterback in high school if I’m correct on that. You don’t hear him complaining, he just kept working wherever they put him. I’ll agree to take him off of punt returns, that’s not his deal. And, he did fumble the ball, luckily Burns got to it. But damn Todd, lay off of Fannin. He’s giving it everything he has. I’m not taking anything from Chris Todd, he is the leader of the offense. I’m not sure how we could’ve run the ball with the way they were stacking against the run.

My only intent is to say that Fannin......

is being used properly in the H-back position and he danced intead of hitting the line with power and speed when he lined up at RB……..I don’t think anything I stated was revolutionary or overly derogatory…..just stated the obvious.

Fannin deserves some love.

He is awesome.....

at the H-Back position blocking and catching passes…….there’s some love.

I will try to stay reasonably organized with this.

My take on last night and what I think I learned from it:

Ben Tate. He is a great back and will be solid as long as he stays healthy, by far our best all around back. If Dyer does come to Auburn, he will indeed have some pretty good shoes to fill.

Ontario McCalleb. Our speedster, but anyone who thinks that he is better than Devine is a fool and this was showed last night. In the end, he needs to keep his speed, gain about 15 to 20 pounds (to hit the 180-185 range) and learn to run between the tackles a little better to be able to get his yards every game, not just against slower defenses. With his speed he does great against bigger, slower defenses, but I am not sure he would get 10 yards against Florida this year.

Mario Fannin. He is still a hell of a deep threat and a home run hitter. I think his touches are better if we pick and choose how they get him the ball and make the defenses account for him every play. I think in the end, they should have moved McCalleb around and swapped around he and Fannin in the slots and the backfield and given the defense a reason to be scared.

Chris Todd. He is going to do what he can to win the games. If you take the 80 yarder to Fannin out, he was still 15-30 for about 200 yards, and he had to throw away about 4 or 5 passes. He showed good poise and good decision making, he still has a lot to learn about pocket presence though. He does a bad job of feeling pressure, which at times was way too quick for our line and looked almost untouched.

Lee Ziemba. He is determined to cost us 10 yards a game in penalties.

The entire offensive line. Not super quick off the ball, but if they can touch you, they move you. A fast defensive line is going to be a pain for this group.

Defensive line. I hate to trash them last night. Devine is a superstar running back who is probably the fastest back we will see this year and maybe next year too. I can’t blame the defensive line for not being able to catch him, but they did a poor job of bringing him down when they got their hands on him. Same goes for Brown, he was just tough to bring down, whether all this was to blame on them being slick from all the mud and rain or whether it was just poor tackling, the still made them both scramble like hell all night.

Linebackers. Honestly, I think this was the best I have seen them play this year. They covered well but like the line, they couldn’t bring down Brown or Devine when they got their hands on them.

Secondary. I think this was their best game in coverage too. McFadden is a marked man now, the refs will give him a PI call per game whether he earns it or not. Neiko Thorpe might be an All American before he leaves Auburn, this kid has got potential in spades. Daren Bates will be great by the end of the year and might not give the starting spot back to McNeil if he gets healthy.

Kicking, still pretty damn awesome.

Special Teams. Still is lacking but they looked a little better last night, kick returns were still too long against us and we still aren’t getting great returns ourselves.

West Virginia. How were they not ranked in the Top 25 before this week? This is honestly as good as they were last year. Brown is more of a threat at quarterback than Pat White was, he is as elusive in the backfield, maybe not in the open field, and has twice the arm that White has. Devine is a stud, no doubt about that and their defense is stout and fast. They really should pop back in the top 25 if they win their next two whoever they play.

by Mattco on Sep 20, 2009 1:19 PM CDT reply actions

The answer for the WVU in the top 25 is easy......

they weren’t ranked preseason because of the QB they lost and the uncertainty of how good Brown would be and on top of that rebuilding a very solid OL that only returned 1 true starter. All of that being said I was very impressed with WVU’s offense and the team overall and I will be shocked, provided they continue to play like they did against us, if they don’t end up a top 25 team.

I would have gone to bammer if my grades hadn't been good enough to go to AU

Daren Bates has impressed me thus far

But there was one play last night that stood out to me. It was a long pass to the left side of the field (from WV’s perspective), and instead of trying to hit the receiver, he tried to get to the ball past the receiver. The receiver made the catch, then made an easy move to get around Bates and get yards after the catch. I don’t think he scored, but he easily got more yards than he should have, and if Bates lays the lumber on him he may not make the catch.

He hasn't been playing college ball nearly as long as..

just about anyone playing right now. With a very late start, he will have learning pains and he probably could have made that play in high school and he just has to learn what he needs to do. We have him for awhile and he will be a very solid player for us.

Sad but true...

I honestly believe if West Virginia beat us they would have found a way to get them into the Top 25………
