(It's AUBURN FOOTBALL Season!)

(Auburn vs. Louisiana Tech Open Thread)

War Eagle, everybody! It's time for week one, of the 2009 college football season! Here's hoping Auburn's Chizik debut is a brighter one than the torrential downpour happening up here this morning, in the Tragic City. In a few hours, we'll find out what the Auburn football team has in store for us. Gene Chizik admitted this week, that he wasn't sure, either.

We got an interesting look at a Malzhan-like offense, last night, watching Tulsa at Tulane. With a freshman quarterback, it was hardly a well-oiled machine, but Tulane still had a lot of trouble defending it. The announcers kept talking about what an even matchup it was, but I saw a Tulsa team jump out to a 17-0 first quarter lead, and never look back. With 5th year senior quarterback Chris Todd running the show, and green Tech corners, they may not know what hit 'em. I'd look for a bubble screen on Auburn's first offensive play.

Check back frequently today, and give us your thoughts! We'll be here, all day, enjoying football. It's finally back! War Eagle!

War Damn Eagle!

War Eagle!!!!

But please, no bubbles screens. We saw too many bubble screens and read options last season.

by SteveFC on Sep 5, 2009 10:48 AM CDT reply actions

Yeah

I’d rather see two straight runs, and then a play action bomb(Todd’s arm allowing).

If hip hop is dead, then it happened the day that Dilla died.

Let's go.

I can’t wait for kickoff. Time to show all the doubters wrong.
I wish the Auburn fan base a great day..

WAR DAMN EAGLE!!

Very excited!

I am excited to see (or hear on the internet radio) how the Tigers are doing! I expect to see a cohesive team this year, which will be a welcome change from last. War Damn Eagle!

Strap it on BOYS!!!!

and may the best AUBURN MAN Win!!!!!!!!!!

by rn4au on Sep 5, 2009 3:10 PM CDT reply actions

Internet radio

I can’t get ESPNU since I don’t have digital cable. Does anyone know where to listen to it on the net? It doesn’t look like ESPN360 is carrying it.

by PAAuburnfan on Sep 5, 2009 3:49 PM CDT reply actions

That's how

I listen to games. You have to pay something like $6.95 a month for access, but you get to hear the broadcast as if you were listening to an alabama radio station…which is pretty cool.

by Tiger on the mountain on Sep 5, 2009 5:36 PM CDT up reply actions

Let's do this.

War Eagle boys and girls.

by Mattco on Sep 5, 2009 6:05 PM CDT reply actions

Count me...

…..among those who thought that this one would be on ESPN360.com. Radio only, it seems, where I am.

by Acid Reign on Sep 5, 2009 6:21 PM CDT reply actions

Auburn does have...

…..the 3-0 lead, and seemed to be moving the ball decently, from the sounds of it!

by Acid Reign on Sep 5, 2009 6:22 PM CDT reply actions

Auburn goes in the hole...

…..as Adam Herring is beaten for the TD. Auburn gave up 3 15-yard penalties on the drive, and trails 7-3. McFadden flagged for interference, Etheridge on a facemask, then Goggins on a facemask. Not the way Ted Roof envisioned starting.

by Acid Reign on Sep 5, 2009 6:29 PM CDT reply actions

in Walt's defense,

That might have been one of the worst P.I calls I have seen. he made contact after the ball went past the receiver and was 3 yards above him. Way uncatchable.

by Mattco on Sep 5, 2009 6:45 PM CDT up reply actions

Gotta play clean

Those penalties killed us. UGH!

by PAAuburnfan on Sep 5, 2009 6:30 PM CDT reply actions

Todd...

……zips it down the middle!

by Acid Reign on Sep 5, 2009 6:33 PM CDT reply actions

1st down in the red zone!

……Let’s not bog down, this time!

by Acid Reign on Sep 5, 2009 6:34 PM CDT reply actions

For the Wildcat to work...

……Burns can’t keep it every time.

by Acid Reign on Sep 5, 2009 6:35 PM CDT reply actions

Burns!

…..will score off the Wildcat! Auburn takes the lead back!

by Acid Reign on Sep 5, 2009 6:38 PM CDT reply actions

End of the first quarter...

…..and Auburn leads 10-7. The Bulldogs have the ball though, on a 3rd down and short near midfield.

by Acid Reign on Sep 5, 2009 6:45 PM CDT reply actions

The brightside of the defense so far.

They are flying around the field. They are playing fast, they are just out of position some so far and playing a little sloppy with the two face masks.

by Mattco on Sep 5, 2009 6:46 PM CDT reply actions

1st quarter...10-3 Auburn...

corners are’nt wanten to get beat over the top cuz they have a true freshman safety

by rn4au on Sep 5, 2009 6:46 PM CDT reply actions

LA tech goes...

…..and Porter breaks it outside for 9, and a first down.

by Acid Reign on Sep 5, 2009 6:50 PM CDT reply actions

A big sack off the blitz...

…..by Craig Stevens. And that’s more sacks than he had ALL YEAR, last year!

by Acid Reign on Sep 5, 2009 6:52 PM CDT reply actions

Our defense

is bending a little too much. We need to get their offense off the field a little faster a few times and set a good pace.

by Mattco on Sep 5, 2009 6:52 PM CDT reply actions

3rd and mile.

……Short dump, and it’s 4th down! Nick Fairley!

by Acid Reign on Sep 5, 2009 6:53 PM CDT reply actions

We dropped a bunch of kicks

……on the ground on A-Day. Lucky to get it back!

by Acid Reign on Sep 5, 2009 6:54 PM CDT reply actions

where is Toro?

is he still hurt and not playing today?

by Mattco on Sep 5, 2009 6:56 PM CDT reply actions

Toro...

……is out. Adam Herring got the start, after only attending 5 practices.

by Acid Reign on Sep 5, 2009 6:57 PM CDT reply actions

is it

still his hammy? or is sick?

by Mattco on Sep 5, 2009 6:59 PM CDT up reply actions

McCaleb

…..squirting through the hole for a great 1st down, on the wrap-around handoff!

by Acid Reign on Sep 5, 2009 6:58 PM CDT reply actions

Haven't seen that play,

……since Billy Brewer and Ole Miss.

by Acid Reign on Sep 5, 2009 6:58 PM CDT reply actions

Was that the drops?

……Auburn faces 3rd and long.

by Acid Reign on Sep 5, 2009 7:02 PM CDT reply actions

is it me

or is Todd really not making good reads and good throws so far?

by Mattco on Sep 5, 2009 7:02 PM CDT reply actions

We're giving up WAY...

….too much cushion, but Auburn recovers the fumble! Nick Fairley!

by Acid Reign on Sep 5, 2009 7:04 PM CDT reply actions

Tiger ball,

……time to bomb it for the end zone!

by Acid Reign on Sep 5, 2009 7:04 PM CDT reply actions

Incomplete,

Fannin had to go too far out of bounds.

by Acid Reign on Sep 5, 2009 7:05 PM CDT reply actions

Now ...

Let’s capitalize on this good fortune!!!

by PAAuburnfan on Sep 5, 2009 7:05 PM CDT reply actions

Great handoff

and a great fake after. that stunned the whole defense.

by Mattco on Sep 5, 2009 7:06 PM CDT reply actions

You can throw deep on 1st down,

…..If Tate gets 9 of it back on the draw on 2nd down!

by Acid Reign on Sep 5, 2009 7:06 PM CDT reply actions

The weakness of that...

…..wrap-around handoff is that DL guys will start raking at the back’s arms. Can result in a lot of fumbles.

by Acid Reign on Sep 5, 2009 7:07 PM CDT reply actions

Kodi....

…..has kept on every snap he’s been on, but Tech hasn’t diagnosed that, yet. 1st down!

by Acid Reign on Sep 5, 2009 7:08 PM CDT reply actions

I really dislike

how they are using Burns so far. They need to let him throw it once or twice to keep the defense honest.

by Mattco on Sep 5, 2009 7:08 PM CDT up reply actions

And then..

….they do. Nothing on that one.

by Acid Reign on Sep 5, 2009 7:08 PM CDT reply actions

Tate...

…..fumbles it away inside the 10. Auburn comes up empty.

by Acid Reign on Sep 5, 2009 7:08 PM CDT reply actions

Fairley

is playing like a beast so far.

by Mattco on Sep 5, 2009 7:09 PM CDT reply actions

Auburn defense,

……seems fired up! Fairley is the real deal, it seems!

by Acid Reign on Sep 5, 2009 7:09 PM CDT reply actions

Who ARE these officials?

…..that should have been a delay of game!

by Acid Reign on Sep 5, 2009 7:11 PM CDT reply actions

It sure seems....

…..that we have NOT fixed our awful short coverage in the middle, from last season.

by Acid Reign on Sep 5, 2009 7:12 PM CDT reply actions

our secondary

really needs to tighten in a bit. they are leaving a lot of cushion in coverage.

by Mattco on Sep 5, 2009 7:12 PM CDT reply actions

Herring...

……gets his first tackle!

by Acid Reign on Sep 5, 2009 7:13 PM CDT reply actions

Bynes...

……is just like he was last year. His name has not been called all game. No run support, disappears in coverage.

by Acid Reign on Sep 5, 2009 7:14 PM CDT reply actions

Auburn is going to get

……Hammered again, on a facemask. That’s the second on Goggins.

by Acid Reign on Sep 5, 2009 7:15 PM CDT reply actions

seriously

these face masks calls are ridiculous. what happened to incidental, are they now just nonexistent?

by Mattco on Sep 5, 2009 7:15 PM CDT reply actions

No incidentals.

Touch the mask, or anything on the helmet, and it’s 15 yards.

by Acid Reign on Sep 5, 2009 7:16 PM CDT reply actions

Auburn has...

……a 3rd and 10, and a chance to stop Tech.

by Acid Reign on Sep 5, 2009 7:17 PM CDT reply actions

so...

you mean it is time for another face mask?

by Mattco on Sep 5, 2009 7:18 PM CDT up reply actions

Jenkins...

……has been deadly. I think he hit his first ten passes of the game, till Thorpe knocked that long one away.

by Acid Reign on Sep 5, 2009 7:18 PM CDT reply actions

this game is starting to suck

The rules are getting ridiculous. Stuff happens on the field and there is a huge difference between grabbing somebodies mask and brushing it.

by Mattco on Sep 5, 2009 7:18 PM CDT reply actions

If we give up points...

……We’ll lose a lot of momentum going into the half.

by Acid Reign on Sep 5, 2009 7:20 PM CDT reply actions

Tech in the red zone.

……McFadden came off his man, to defend the tight end!

by Acid Reign on Sep 5, 2009 7:21 PM CDT reply actions

Tech will burn a time out.

……1:27 left in the half, Auburn leads 10-7, but Tech threatens, 2ne and 10 from the Auburn 18.

by Acid Reign on Sep 5, 2009 7:22 PM CDT reply actions

Incomplete.

…..Tech faces 3rd and 10.

by Acid Reign on Sep 5, 2009 7:25 PM CDT reply actions

Porter back in.

…..Jenkins runs, and no one home in the middle. First and goal. Where was Bynes?

by Acid Reign on Sep 5, 2009 7:25 PM CDT reply actions

1:03.

……Jenkins on the keeper, inside the 5.

by Acid Reign on Sep 5, 2009 7:26 PM CDT reply actions

3rd and goal...

……Tech uses their last timeout. Not Auburn, just a lack of getting the play in on time.

by Acid Reign on Sep 5, 2009 7:27 PM CDT reply actions

Key play

……Jenkins overthrew it, Thorpe on the coverage! 4th down.

by Acid Reign on Sep 5, 2009 7:29 PM CDT reply actions

Here comes the FG unit.

……Ties it. 10-10. Auburn didn’t even try to freeze him.

by Acid Reign on Sep 5, 2009 7:29 PM CDT reply actions

take it to the lockers....

or do you try to put it in the air and get some points?

by Mattco on Sep 5, 2009 7:29 PM CDT reply actions

Auburn has next to no time.

……If they have any trickeration on kick returns, this might be the time to use it.

by Acid Reign on Sep 5, 2009 7:31 PM CDT reply actions

Tech had...

…..an 18-play drive, and they get the ball first in the 2nd half.

by Acid Reign on Sep 5, 2009 7:32 PM CDT reply actions

We're just lucky...

……that 3rd down pass was a shade out of bounds.

by Acid Reign on Sep 5, 2009 7:32 PM CDT reply actions

And Trott...

……fumbles the return of the squibb. I see his hands are about the same as previous years.

by Acid Reign on Sep 5, 2009 7:33 PM CDT reply actions

Todd...

……will give it to McCaleb, who jukes for 9!

by Acid Reign on Sep 5, 2009 7:33 PM CDT reply actions

Chuck it!

……So what if we throw a pick?

by Acid Reign on Sep 5, 2009 7:34 PM CDT reply actions

5 seconds,

……and this could mean the lead, and a huge lift for the Tigers!

by Acid Reign on Sep 5, 2009 7:34 PM CDT reply actions

Byrum

with another solid kick.

by Mattco on Sep 5, 2009 7:35 PM CDT reply actions

Auburn LEADS!

…..13-10, at the half! Great use of the hurry-up drive!

by Acid Reign on Sep 5, 2009 7:36 PM CDT reply actions

Despite a bevy of mistakes, turnovers, and penalties....

……Auburn STILL has the lead at half! Auburn MUST choke up on the coverage in the 2nd half. We’re lettting them nickel and dime us to death underneath. Jenkins needs to feel the heat.

by Acid Reign on Sep 5, 2009 7:37 PM CDT reply actions

If you want a laugh...

…..Look at ESPN’s halftime box score, on the rushing. Who the heck is Caleb Blanton? How did he get 2 carries for Auburn?

http://scores.espn.go.com/ncf/boxscore?gameId=292480002

by Acid Reign on Sep 5, 2009 7:43 PM CDT reply actions

5.5 yards a carry is pretty good.

we need to keep getting him the ball.

by Mattco on Sep 5, 2009 7:50 PM CDT up reply actions

Mario Fanin, Cody Burns, Ben Tate look great

Need to get a pass rush and cover their receivers better

by rn4au on Sep 5, 2009 7:45 PM CDT reply actions

Honestly,

……there’s a lot to disappointed about, in this game. We’re encouraged, because I think Auburn is dominating on both lines of scrimmage. But, 4 keys:

1. Penalties. 67 yards in a half is horrendous.

2. Wide Receivers. Trooper Taylor was supposed to make a difference. Darvin Adams had a drop, and we’ve got exactly 1 catch for 10 yards out of those guys. Kinda like Monroe, last year. Negligible production out of the receiving corps.

3. Ball security. Tate, Trott, Fannin. Can’t let that ball loose!

4. Defense in the middle. Jenkins CANNOT be allowed to chew up double digit yards scrambling up the middle! And we NEED to knock those slant and smash guys OFF THEIR PINS when they cross. Bynes, in the Tampa-2, that’s your job! You drop, and disrupt those patterns!

by Acid Reign on Sep 5, 2009 7:49 PM CDT reply actions

I thought

that Bynes was out, I haven’t heard his name once and haven’t seen him around the ball yet.

by Mattco on Sep 5, 2009 7:52 PM CDT up reply actions

No,

…..Bynes got SMOKED on a screen to Porter, for a 1st down.

by Acid Reign on Sep 5, 2009 7:53 PM CDT reply actions

Byrum kicks a liner...

……Livas contained at the 24.

by Acid Reign on Sep 5, 2009 7:59 PM CDT reply actions

Fairley...

….continues to get his name called. He’s creating havoc on the line!

by Acid Reign on Sep 5, 2009 8:00 PM CDT reply actions

3rd and 10,

……And it’s Fairley banging the QB! 4th down!

by Acid Reign on Sep 5, 2009 8:01 PM CDT reply actions

Tate's back...

……Zachary gets his first catch of the day, on a good out!

by Acid Reign on Sep 5, 2009 8:02 PM CDT reply actions

New set of downs.

…..McCaleb! Seems to pick up good yardage, every carry!

by Acid Reign on Sep 5, 2009 8:03 PM CDT reply actions

2nd and short.

…..Fannin can’t hang on, and is hurt.

by Acid Reign on Sep 5, 2009 8:03 PM CDT reply actions

Todd hits Adams,

…..another fumble. 4 on the ground now, La Tech has the ball.

by Acid Reign on Sep 5, 2009 8:05 PM CDT reply actions

Soft coverage continues.

……Porter bruises over the Auburn defense for another 1st down.

by Acid Reign on Sep 5, 2009 8:06 PM CDT reply actions

At the Auburn 36...

……Porter is snowed under for nothing.

by Acid Reign on Sep 5, 2009 8:06 PM CDT reply actions

Jenkins....

…..INTERCEPTED! The TRUE FRESHMAN saves a TD!

by Acid Reign on Sep 5, 2009 8:07 PM CDT reply actions

Washington!

…..Jenkins floated that one up, and Darren Bates gives it back to the Auburn offense! War Eagle!

by Acid Reign on Sep 5, 2009 8:08 PM CDT reply actions

Zachary!

…..a 92 yard TOUCHDOWWWWWWWNNNNNN_AUBURN!

by Acid Reign on Sep 5, 2009 8:09 PM CDT reply actions

That breaks....

…..the record! Longest TD pass in Auburn history!

by Acid Reign on Sep 5, 2009 8:10 PM CDT reply actions

Silas Daniels, see ya...

…..later! Terrell Zachary’s bomb replaces Daniels in the record book. Daniels, if you’ll recall, got his against La Tech, early in the 2nd half of homecoming, 2004.

by Acid Reign on Sep 5, 2009 8:11 PM CDT reply actions

Officially,

…..it’s now 93 yards. That will be the LONGEST TD play, of any sort, in Auburn history!

by Acid Reign on Sep 5, 2009 8:13 PM CDT reply actions

Phillip "Saturday Night" Livas...

……is snowed under short of the 20, by a fired up Auburn team!

by Acid Reign on Sep 5, 2009 8:14 PM CDT reply actions

2nd down.

…..Jenkins, fires, overthrown.

by Acid Reign on Sep 5, 2009 8:15 PM CDT reply actions

Too much air.

…..Auburn catches a break.

by Acid Reign on Sep 5, 2009 8:15 PM CDT reply actions

Possession play.

……Jenkins will step up, and fires into traffic! Incomplete!~

by Acid Reign on Sep 5, 2009 8:16 PM CDT reply actions

An ill-advised catch,

……and Gulley is pounded. Well, at least he held on!

by Acid Reign on Sep 5, 2009 8:16 PM CDT reply actions

Fannin...

……on the screen, for 4.

by Acid Reign on Sep 5, 2009 8:19 PM CDT reply actions

Burns back in.

……McCaleb on the Stealer play, gets 5.

by Acid Reign on Sep 5, 2009 8:20 PM CDT reply actions

3rd and short.

…..Todd in, to Tate, will be short.

by Acid Reign on Sep 5, 2009 8:20 PM CDT reply actions

Or maybe not.

……I think we got a generous spot.

by Acid Reign on Sep 5, 2009 8:21 PM CDT reply actions

New set of Auburn downs.

…..McCaleb will chew 9 more yards.

by Acid Reign on Sep 5, 2009 8:22 PM CDT reply actions

Todd shows good arm strength...

……on a deep post. Incomplete, 3rd down.

by Acid Reign on Sep 5, 2009 8:24 PM CDT reply actions

Or 2nd down.

…..Now, it’s third and 10 on an underthrow.

by Acid Reign on Sep 5, 2009 8:25 PM CDT reply actions

Possession play.

……Todd misses Benton, and Durst will return.

by Acid Reign on Sep 5, 2009 8:25 PM CDT reply actions

Durst...

……will bang a high, short one, pins ’em at the 13 on the fair catch. Will hurt his average, but good field position play.

by Acid Reign on Sep 5, 2009 8:26 PM CDT reply actions

a zone read for...

……7, then Auburn smokes the reverse for a loss. 3rd and 5. Jenkins will fire too hard, too long, and incomplete! 4th down.

by Acid Reign on Sep 5, 2009 8:30 PM CDT reply actions

Glasgow...

……gets a horrible bounce, back towards La Tech, only 33 yards. Auburn’s football near midfield.

by Acid Reign on Sep 5, 2009 8:31 PM CDT reply actions

The Al Groh era may be over at Virginia.

……They got upset by William and Mary today. ACC!

by Acid Reign on Sep 5, 2009 8:32 PM CDT reply actions

McCaleb...

……is dangerous. I hope he stays healthy!

by Acid Reign on Sep 5, 2009 8:32 PM CDT reply actions

Todd...

…..a flea flicker to Burns, deep to Trott, overthrown. I think we’ll see Wes Byrum.

by Acid Reign on Sep 5, 2009 8:34 PM CDT reply actions

Byrum...

…..from 47 yards, rifles it through!

by Acid Reign on Sep 5, 2009 8:35 PM CDT reply actions

4:28 left in the 3rd,

……and Auburn is starting to open it up.

by Acid Reign on Sep 5, 2009 8:36 PM CDT reply actions

Hull kicks off...

…..to Livas at the 7, and Livas has his best return of the day, out to the 32.

by Acid Reign on Sep 5, 2009 8:36 PM CDT reply actions

Jenkins...

……Trying the running game twice, and it’s 3rd and 5.

by Acid Reign on Sep 5, 2009 8:38 PM CDT reply actions

Shotgun...

……Flushed, and we let him out. 33 yard gain. Ouch.

by Acid Reign on Sep 5, 2009 8:38 PM CDT reply actions

Jenkins is impressive.

this kid has good poise and is making good decisions. He will be a good one.

by Mattco on Sep 5, 2009 8:39 PM CDT reply actions

Jenkins is...

…..SACKED! Nick Fairley!

by Acid Reign on Sep 5, 2009 8:39 PM CDT reply actions

They'll...

……and Bynes dumps Porter on the short pass!

by Acid Reign on Sep 5, 2009 8:40 PM CDT reply actions

3rd and 15

……Jenkins dumps to the sideline, but it’s only to the 29.

by Acid Reign on Sep 5, 2009 8:40 PM CDT reply actions

Field goal unit in.

……Will they fake it? It’s 4 yards.

by Acid Reign on Sep 5, 2009 8:41 PM CDT reply actions

And...

….they hit it. Auburn lead is cut to 23-13, with 52 seconds left in the 3rd quarter.

by Acid Reign on Sep 5, 2009 8:41 PM CDT reply actions

McCaleb...

……will take the KO to the 28.

by Acid Reign on Sep 5, 2009 8:43 PM CDT reply actions

Wildcat.

…..Todd is a receiver. Burns will get 2 up the gut.

by Acid Reign on Sep 5, 2009 8:43 PM CDT reply actions

The 3rd quarter ends,

……and Auburn leads, 23-13! War Eagle!

by Acid Reign on Sep 5, 2009 8:45 PM CDT reply actions

Bama is getting all they want...

…..in the Georgia Dome. Bud Foster’s D isn’t all that solid against the pass, but they are trying to kill the guys in the Bama backfield. A really stupid forearm shiver to the back of the head penalty on McClain gives Tech a TD, and the Hokies take the lead, 17-16, with a minute left in the half.

by Acid Reign on Sep 5, 2009 8:47 PM CDT reply actions

La Tech finally...

…..corrals McCaleb, and it’s 2nd and 10.

by Acid Reign on Sep 5, 2009 8:48 PM CDT reply actions

McCaleb...

…..continues to pile up the yards.

by Acid Reign on Sep 5, 2009 8:49 PM CDT reply actions

McCaleb for....

13 more! 1st down in the red zone!

by Acid Reign on Sep 5, 2009 8:50 PM CDT reply actions

A bubble screen,

……thrown backwards, Zachary loses 7.

by Acid Reign on Sep 5, 2009 8:51 PM CDT reply actions

A drop by...

…..Blake. 3rd and 16 from the 17.

by Acid Reign on Sep 5, 2009 8:51 PM CDT reply actions

Adams!

…..Beats ’em on the corner, Todd lays it in! Touchdown, Auburn!

by Acid Reign on Sep 5, 2009 8:52 PM CDT reply actions

Byrum...

……Up and good. 30-13.

by Acid Reign on Sep 5, 2009 8:52 PM CDT reply actions

Leigh Tiffin....

…..hooks it wide left, and Virginia Tech will lead the Tide 17-16, at the half.

by Acid Reign on Sep 5, 2009 8:53 PM CDT reply actions

Hull again...

……To Livas at the 4. Livas gets 28. We are getting blocked. Flag?

by Acid Reign on Sep 5, 2009 8:56 PM CDT reply actions

Tech starts at the 15.

……Porter goes untouched to the 25.

by Acid Reign on Sep 5, 2009 8:57 PM CDT reply actions

Did we see the majority of the offense tonight?

Or will they expand it out a bit more and let it loose a little more each week? The line looked very good on the run blocking, they left a little to be desired on the pass blocking but earn a B+ from me.

I hate to give the running backs a B+ with two 100 yard rushers but putting it on the ground as much as they did makes it tough to give them the A+ the numbers earn. How about an A-?

Todd had a very solid second half, his first half he could never find a rhythm with the receivers and it showed. He gets a B+ too for settling in and taking care of the ball like we need a quarterback to.

Receivers. I have to give them a C+. Their timing and routes were still off and they still didn’t do much. Outside of the 93 yarder in the second half for Zachery, our passing game didn’t do much.

Byrum gets an A+, 3/3 on field goals including a couple long ones and perfect on extra points, can’t do any better.

Nick Fairley is a beast and gets an A+ by himself, he was everywhere when we needed him. The rest of the d line gets an A, they did a good job and Jenkins made them look a little worse than they played.

I can’t in good conscience give the linebackers better than a D and they probably deserve an F. They were no where to be seen on run support, and left the middle open for lots of short passing.

The secondary did a good job. Bates played solid and the Thorpe played good. McFadden had two pass interference calls against him, one was crap and the other he just got there a split second too early. I will give the secondary a B.

All in all, the offense looked solid and consistent the majority of the game. This offense just put up 540 yards or so on a reasonable team and can only get better this year sans injuries. The defense played a good game minus a few stupid penalties and poor linebacker play, but in the same breath you have to give credit to Ross Jenkins for playing a good game and keeping his composure the whole game.

War Eagle.

Overall I'm impressed.

Both sides of the balll rebounded well from big early penalties, which I think you can attribute mostly to jitters and playing under the big lights for the first time for a lot of our guys. I think they were under more pressure than one would believe initially. But man, they settled down great.

Wes Byrum had two HUGE confident boosters for him (late in the 1st half and another later on in the 2nd).

Chris Todd threw the ball extremely well and inserted my foot into my mouth firmly regarding his playing ability. Even a lot of incomplete passes were right there for our recivers.

Our running backs looked very good; our o-line provided good protection considering it was our first game.

Though he ran for our first TD, I did not like the Burns package we used last night. Since he’s officially not a QB anymore I feel like he needs to fall in line with the rest of our rb’s and recievers. I see that “wildcat” formation getting very tired and worn after a couple of games unless Malzahn’s got some serious wrinkles in that scheme ahead for the rest of the season.

Overall, I was impressed. A big gripe under the Tubbs regime was second half adjustments, and last night we had the best second half to a football game that I can remember. We had over 500 yards of offense for the first time since 2005 ( I think, if I heard correctly on the post game radio report).

So, in closing I feel good about our chances against some other teams that maybe a few weeks ago I didn’t. It’s still early and I’m not going to going to get my hopes up too high but I give Chizik an A+ in his debut. His coaching staff made adjustments and really shutdown a LA Tech offense that seemed to be finding its groove towards the end of the 1st half. I hope everyone had a pleasurable experience this weekend whether you wee at the game or in your livingroom. Let’s hope we can make some noise this year and sneak up on some people!!!

agree with you about the wildcat and Kodi

In fact, they did abandon it after two tries in the red zone and went back to the more effective Todd, Tate, Fanin power package to move the ball.

Kodi should not pass the ball. Against stronger defenses, we will get intercepted.

I wouldn’t abandon the wildcat, but would be more creative in its plays. Kodi should be prepared to pitch the ball, like in an option, with a trailing RB. He tended to keep it.

We have a strong group of running backs, and there is a place for the wildcat, but we must be a little more creative in what we do with it.

Todd showed real command on the field. And our kicking was great.
