You know… overall I am quite pleased. We had some really stupid facemasks and Tate’s fumble, but I will say that we had a pretty good first game. It was obvious that we slowed it down a bit in the second half and Todd looked more confident. Our receivers, while very talented, are running bad routes. They are not very sharp. Benton was all anyone heard about leading up the game. He was the worst route runner out there. I am sure that will get better because it has to. Good to see Blake get a few plays as well.
What is the deal with the wildcat always running to the side of the field with Todd lined up at WR. Get that boy the hell out of the way, especially with a past shoulder issue. On that subject… there is little doubt that the arm is healthy. He threw some very top notch balls last night.
Game on and War Eagel
If you are a War Damn Eagle, you can War Damn anything.
The point
of having the QB in the game during the Wildcat Formation, is that you don’t know who you’re matching up with untli the last second. This is why it is best to have a regular position player run the formation, instead of having a special QB to come in and run it.
Upon moving to AL, I let my wife decide who she would root for. After one day at a new job full of Bama fans, she met me at the door with a hearty cry of "WAR EAGLE"

Fannin
is Todd’s top target, coming out of the backfield. Hell, even Tate caught two balls. Great protection for Todd all night long, but are we not going to throw it to any tight ends? Anyone know if Malzahn ever did at Tulsa?

You saw...
…..what happened the first time Trott got his hands on the ball! Luckily, it rolled out of bounds!
Actually...
I missed the first four minutes while ESPN was switching over from Miss State and I was channel surfing..

Anyone know the yardage distribution by half?
I thought we did a great job making adjustments at halftime. The Bulldogs couldn’t do anything or stop us in the second half, I’d like to see how many yards they got on us in the second half. The defense looked a little suspect, especially in the first half. Hope we get better on that side of the ball.

Nevermind, found it
357-102 yards in the second half. Dominance.

Did not like
the way they utilized Burns in the wildcat last night. Even though it worked against La Tech, I don’t think it has much life going into the rest of the season. I wish he could fall in line with the rest of the WR’s and rotate out as needed.
I’m not much on x’s and o’s but can’t a reciever be audibled into the backfield? I’d like that much better. To have maybe Kodi out at WR for a couple of plays then on the third or fourth or whatever audible him into the backfield. Maybe a wishbone type setup with he and Todd where the defense has no idea who the ball will get snapped to? I don’t know. I think having him run onto the field strictly to run the wildcat makes him too much of a target and our intentions too obvious. Some technical football guru needs to explain to me if I’m right or wrong on this.
Other than that I was happy. And hell, Kodi even scored our first TD from the very formation I’m complaining about so my criticism can only carry so much weight.
WAR EAGLE!

I agree with your take on the wildcat. Bringing Kodi in only when he is going to run it is way too obvious and will get us killed with any really well-coached team later in the season.
Remember, we can have no more than four back off the line. (Just a new rewording of the 7 on the line rule.) I suppose if Kodi was a good WR he would be in more often which would make his pesence on the field less of a “tell.”
Zach, I also don’t like Todd being used as a blocker with that newly repaired and extremely valuable shoulder. Right now, our future depends on that arm.
