The Chizik Era Starts With A Bang
One game doesn't make a season, but it sure makes a Labor Day weekend. It's hard to imagine an opening weekend victory going any better than Auburn's 37-13 win over Louisiana Tech Saturday night at Jordan-Hare Stadium.
The night was full of unlikely heroes, with Tiger coach Gene Chizik topping the list. Few new coaches have endured the scrutiny that Chizik has since his hire last December. On Saturday, he showed the nation that he still knows how to coach. His on-field enthusiasm was a breath of fresh air for Auburn fans. Maybe he means it when says this job is his dream.
While Auburn struggles with depth problems, it didn't seem to show on the offensive side of the ball. How about these stats: 556 yards of offense with 327 coming in the second half and 301 yards rushing. That's quite an improvement over last year's performance against Alabama where it tallied 170 yards of total offense.
What can you say about freshman Onterio McCalebb? Fans witnessed the single greatest career opener by an Auburn running back in school history. When the night was finished, the freshman from Fort Meade, Florida had thrashed the Bulldogs for 148 yards on 22 carries. Take that Bo Jackson.
"Onterio is a very good football player," said Chizik following the game. "He needs to stay very humble which he will. I think Gus and our offensive staff do a great job of moving him around and finding different ways of getting him the ball so there are some means to the madness there. He has a chance to be a very good football player here at Auburn."
And don't forget Ben Tate who added 118 yards. There were so many great storylines that we could talk all day about them. How about the new and improved Chris Todd who looked more like a three year starter than the most maligned quarterback on the team heading to fall camp?
How about Kodi Burns who after two long years finally appears to have found his place on the team? The best moment of the night was undoubtedly Chizik meeting Burns on the sidelines after the junior scored the night's first Auburn touchdown.
"We told Kodi he was going to help us win football games," said Chizik. "He is here for the team. He is an Auburn man. I said it before, and I will say it again, it was really awesome to see that young man score. He came off and I said I told you that you were going to help us win games. It is great to see a guy who is that selfless. Good things happen to good people."
We've listened to wide receivers coach Trooper Taylor rave about his unit for the last month. Now we know what he's talking about. Not since the days of Taylor, Aromashodu and Obamanu have Auburn receivers turned in such an impressive performance. The competition at practice during the past month showed up early and often Saturday with Terrell Zachery and Mario Fannin leading the way.
What should give fans hope this year is how the Auburn coaches adjusted their game plan at the half. After struggling to a three point halftime lead, coaches headed to the locker room and emerged with a plan to slow the Louisiana Tech offense.
It worked. The Tech offense never recovered.
"I think it was a combination of things," said Bulldogs coach Derek Dooley. "Once we got behind them a little bit, it changes a little bit of your mentality, and then they switched to man-to-man in the second half. They were playing zone early on and we were able to pick at it early on. Once they covered us up, their guys were playing better than our guys and we just couldn't win."
Auburn now turns its attention to Miss State next Saturday. When players watch film this week they'll see enough progress to be optimistic, while seeing enough mistakes to know there's work to be done.
We still don't know much about this 2009 Auburn team, but it looks better than anything we saw last season. At this point we can ask for little more.
Bring on the Bulldogs - again.

I called it and I want y'all to remember...
our offense was the only thing holding us back from a dominating season last year. This year we’ll BEAT LSU AND GEORGIA! Along with ALL THE TEAMS WE’RE SUPPOSED TO BEAT! Last year all of our losses except for the last were close… too close at that. All we needed was a little offensive boost and we got it this year! I’ll say right now if Alabama and or Ole Miss loses two SEC games then WE’LL be playing in the SEC title game this year and all the bammers who laughed about us hiring Chizik will be crying after he’s broken their hearts and playing for the SEC title in his FIRST SEASON! I’m not saying it’ll happen, but it’s a huge probability. Just remember, we’ve got the offensive spark we needed last year. If we had an offense last year, Ole Miss, Arkansas, LSU, Georgia, and Vanderbilt would’ve all been wins.
Here are my worries.
A. for us to win all year, our offensive line has to stay healthy. While we have a little bit of depth at line, it is a drop off and exactly that, a little bit. We can’t afford injuries on the line.
B. Our linebackers have to be more active in the game. They were no where to be seen last night. They will get better when Freeman and Pybus return. And the whole defense will get better when Darren Bates is more comfortable in the game and the coaches have a little more belief in him. Look for our defense to really start to peak out against Tennessee if they stay healthy. By the Tennessee game, Bates should understand his position better and Roof will be more willing to go into a Cover 2 defense and let the corners play more man defense.
C. Lots of timing issues to work on on offense and just some first game jitters led to some sloppy penalties in the first half. Once the timing between Todd and the receivers improves and the defense settles in, we will see another step of improvement.
Agreed
There is a lot to be optimistic about. We saw some spark last night that we have been missing for a long time. But there are some fundamentals that need to be improved upon. The Tigers can do it, but we can not put unrealistic expectations on them. I am happy to take every Saturday, every 60 minutes, at a time. The Tigers are still discovering what they are all about and finding their strengths and weaknesses. It will be truly exciting to watch them grow this season! War Eagle!

Second that...
I am very excited about the building blocks in place. We are so much better offensively than last year. There’s really no comparison. We have much to be pleased about today and some things maybe to be concerned over, but bottom line..we are moving in the right direction. Frankly, that is all you can really ask of them.
I am very happy with CGC right now. You are so right Jay…Breath of Fresh Air Indeed!!
Georgia will have it turned around by the time we play them
Joe Cox may not be the QB anymore by then either
"You just keep pounding balls into the gap. The one thing you don’t want to do is hit a home run. That’s a rally-killer." - Jeff Francouer
Cox was sick.
I don’t really look for him to be replaced, he will get better and play better and keep his spot. You have to remember that they weren’t sure he was even going to play due to flu like symptoms.
Last night showed some promise...
but I’m not sure about SEC title game expectations. I still say the goal should be 8 wins this year (although if we do more I would be pleasantly surprised and would love every second of it). I think if Auburn stays healthy (particularly on the lines, although an injured Todd or McCalebb or Coleman or Fannin or Zachery, etc etc etc would be detrimental too), but IF we can stay healthy, we could be looking at a decent season in 2009. This could be used as a stepping stone toward GREAT things, championship-caliber things, in 2010, 2011, 2012, etc. The way I see it, most Auburn fans are in 1 of 2 camps right now — either they’re still negative and focus more on what’s going on on the other side of the state, or they’re overly optimistic after AU’s performace vs. LTU. I’d like to think I’m somewhere in the middle of all that. I feel like if we stay relatively healthy, we have a shot at a decent season and maybe a January bowl game. I guess I’m just rambling on and on right now, but I just wanted to put my 2 cents in. I believe in this team. War Eagle.
"We're at AUBURN. I think that says it all. We're going after the best in the country -- no matter when, what, where, how. That's how we're going to do it. We're going to work really hard to try to get that done every year -- including this one." -- Auburn University Head Football Coach Gene Chizik
I am in the middle of this too.
I think that if we stay healthy we have a chance to make a solid run this year and be competitive in most of the games.
I will feel better if we handle Miss State in a similar way. The reason I am optimistic is that our offense wasn’t on all cylinders and we still were impressive. I know it was against a non SEC opponent and that is why I said that if we can do this against Miss State I will feel much better.
I will say that Tennessee is going to be a better game than most Auburn fans thought it was going to be. Although in the same breath, I am starting to think we have more of a chance against LSU and Ole Miss now too.
Matt, I agree. Georgia played a good Cowboy team. The Dawgs turned the ball over twice and OSU got a TD from each one.
I saw a stronger than expected Tennessee, but also some vulnerabilites at LSU and Ole Miss. Bama looked good against a fairly good Virginia Tech.
Todd looked good and was protected by our OL. McCalebb was awesome. Need more variety out of the wildcat, but I’m sure we revealed the minumum required to get the job done.
Play calling and adjustments were terrific. Good energy and enthusiasm.
Onterio McCalebb
The next great Auburn back?

It is a bit early still.
Yet, he seems to have all the necessary tools except for size. I think he will be good, just how good depends a lot on him staying healthy.
