Around SBN: Yu Darvish Diagnosed With Mariners Fever

Random-ness

After a pretty good "weekend" of College Football there are some things that have become apparent to me.  For starters there should be no such thing as a Preseason Top 25.  I know this is nothing new, but lets look at this a little.  If you tell me that VT was a Top 10 team and Oregon was a Top 15 team after watching them play….  I would kiss your foot.  It is not possible to be there with no offense.  Just ask Auburn last season.  I know it is only the first week, but come on.  Miami not being in the Top 25 and Iowa being there?  Again… come on.  Hopefully things will work itself out in the polls.

Now to the point of my post and Auburn, everyone is talking about Onterio McCalebb and rightfully so, but how about Fairly?  He as in fact a big stud.  He alone saved us on two LA Tech drives.  Was anyone else surprised at how well he played?  Our defense is going to be fine after a couple more games, but can we get through Miss St and be prepared for West Virginia?  Darren Bates made a few mistakes due to inexperience; Herring played most of the game after practicing only five or six times all summer.  Our linebackers are going to have to get into the flow.  Having no Eltro Freeman, Spencer Pybus, or Nosa Equae can hold you back, but Josh Bynes is a veteran and was out of position a lot, and not one linebacker was able to drop into coverage.  A decent SEC team will expose that quickly.

All the media talk regarding WR was about DeAngelo Benton and Emory Blake prior to gameday.  Both looked like rookies in game one.  Routes were not sharp, but I see that turning around.  I am sure they were "wide-eyed" in front of 86 thousand.   Besides, Trooper will not stand for that.

Speaking of coaches… how about the fire and animation on the sidelines?  I know that we have seen it in the past with Will Muschamp, but I am actually talking about Gene Chizik.  I cannot recall a time when Tommy Tuberville got excited/animated over a play.  He would just casually stroll up the sidelines with a golf clap.  Chizik was quite animated.  I for one thought it was good to see.

Gus Malzahn was another matter all together.  Maybe it was his legendary coffee intake, but all he seemed to do was yell "Run It… Run It, Hurry up… Snap It, Go… Go."  I for one thought that Auburn looked really fast in the first half.  The Tigers did slow it down in the second half and it was obvious.  I am sure that was so that every one was in the correct position.  I cannot wait to see what the offense will look like when Gus gets Auburn on his speed.

Special Teams…  Auburn needs a punt returner!  Mario Fannin cannot do it.  He looked bad.  Anthony Gulley looked like a freshman and appeared to not be very comfortable at the position either.  Byrum looked good.  His leg looked strong, and his mechanics seemed cleaner.  Durst, was good, but we did not see him much.

My final take will be on the "wildcat."  Like it or not the "wildcat" is part of college football now.  It seemed like every team used it at some point this weekend.  I like having Kodi at that position, but why in the world does he run to the side that Chris Todd is blocking every time.  I understand that we need both players in the game, especially to keep the "quick to the line" plan of Gus, but I do not like to see Todd blocking.   I know it happened three times, maybe more.  I also though the pass play that Kodi threw was a good play call.  Too bad the pass was badly overthrown.

You say, “I also though the pass play that Kodi threw was a good play call. Too bad the pass was badly overthrown.”

Insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result.

Agree that Todd should not risk a recently surgically repaired shoulder, upon which depends our season.

Sparky, cheer up.

You've got to let Kodi air it out sometimes for the Wildcat to work, though

If he never throws the ball, the defense cheats up and he never has any room to run.

I agree

But he dosent have a good touch on the ball… We need to get him out there practicing that thrown 50 times before he does it again

Haha

I am not sure if that was intended for me or not. I don’t think it would hurt to try it a couple more times. If it doesn’t work then so be it and move on. I do agree that Todd shouldn’t be blocking, but I think that Malzhan knows better than we do about that situation. I’m sure he’ll throw something different out there for Mississippi State. I mean the guy is really good and I think he’s going to do a great job in the end. War Eagle.

The pass from Burn's was.....

perfect….as there was no where for him to throw it without throwing it into coverage. And the passing from the wildcat doesn’t have to be hugely successful for it to be effective….it just needs to be a real threat. Look for LB’s to be hugely improved this weekend against MSU……Adam Herring is just getting up to speed and Wade Christopher looked good in mop up duty. If we continue at this rate LB depth will not be a concern by the time we go to knoxville. WDE.

I would have gone to bammer if my grades hadn't been good enough to go to AU

Okay. I know when I’m busted. This horse is dead already, but I’m takin’ one last shot.

Throwing passes is one thing. But throwing bad passes/interceptions kills drives or keeps us from scoring in the red zone.

Not another word.

In keeping Randomness

Anybody else watch the antics of Mcclain Saturday? If that’s not how his name is spelled please forgive me. I still cannot get over the sheer audacity he has to hit a player when he isn’t looking. Afterwards, he had a few antics that kept the whole thing going. Wow Saban, you’ve got some top notch guys on your squad huh? Would you leave your top defensive guy alone in your house for a week?

by Sparkey on Sep 8, 2009 2:17 PM CDT reply actions

and he wasnt suspended

If that had been an Auburn Player the Bama people would be calling for a suspension. Im sure Chicik wouldnt have let him back on the field regarldess of the game on the line….

I forgot to add

That the Bama people would be calling for the head of the Auburn player only because it would lessen the team from a talent stand point. Not because the action was wrong. I know that because they are remaining quiet about the situation

Good to know that somebody else agrees with me on that one.

It was utterly ridiculous watching such a classless tirade. I would say you’re supposed to show your class and not your ass but that would imply he’s got class in the first place. I am not going to push that at all. I’m not sure he or Saban has one. In fact, most of my Alabama fan-friends say that Saban is an incredible jerk with no class but they’re glad they’ve got him.

by Sparkey on Sep 8, 2009 2:36 PM CDT reply actions

this is one of those things

where you as an Auburn fan say “Blah blah he’s classless blah blah”

then I as a Bama fan say, “Heat of the moment blah blah blah always had great character”

Then you as an Auburn fan say, “blah blah bammer excuses blah blah parole tide blah blah”

Then I say, “blah blah if it was your player blah blah chop block! blah blah”

and it could go on and on.

Rolo has never been a prob on the field or off it, this is a non-issue to the national media and anyone else and was ten second incident in full football game. The ref gave the other team 30 for it, what more do you want?

if this wasnt an Alabama player what would your reaction be?

ALABAMA leading the NCAA with infractions since 1994

by auskip07 on Sep 8, 2009 3:47 PM CDT up reply actions

YES!

what is the issue? he shoved two people after a play, because of that the other team got the ball within ten. You guys are talking suspension. Suspension? He didn’t take his helmet off he didn’t kick someone while they were down, he didn’t punch someone at the end of the game

the twenty year old athlete in a high stakes match up shoved two people after a play was over. “Oh man really? he should def be kicked off the team!”. He got two personal foul flags called on his team because of it, what more do you want?

Virginia Tech was thanking him!

You guys really think this was that big? If this was anybody but an Alabama player would you consider it a big deal?

(Your Team Here) sucks

by Wallacewade04 on Sep 8, 2009 3:53 PM CDT up reply actions

Kicked off the team?

Now your putting words in our mouths. I think we are just shocked nothing happened besides the 30 yards…. Also VT was moving quite well i dont think the penalitys were to blame for the team scoring. They did infact make it 10 more yards for the score on their own

ALABAMA leading the NCAA with infractions since 1994

by auskip07 on Sep 8, 2009 4:05 PM CDT up reply actions

exaggerating you argument i admit

Okay just watched it again

cheap shove? yes, but it was after the play and wasn’t amazingly vicious, this is not so uncommon. the only reason I could see him getting thrown out of the game was the brushing off the ref who was in his face, but the ref who got shoved decided not to throw him off the field so that’s a moot point

if the guy gettin shoved doesn’t think he should be thrown off the field, I mean isn’t he the authority on whether or not Rolo should have been ejected? he’s the ref that got shoved and he kept the player on the field

oh and the reason that it made the score for VT is that the play it happened on was like a 15 yard loss on a fumbled toss

(Your Team Here) sucks

by Wallacewade04 on Sep 8, 2009 4:11 PM CDT up reply actions

Its a dead issue....

and I’m sure that he’s doing some extra work because of the stupidity. But Wallace you have to admit that its rare to shove a ref and not get thrown out of the game……and by it being a team leader its even more dissappointing. Regardless the ref didn’t and I am sure he got his punishment from the garden nome….errrr… I mean Saban.

I would have gone to bammer if my grades hadn't been good enough to go to AU

by Todd92 on Sep 9, 2009 8:48 AM CDT up reply actions

YES

Actually, yes I would. This is a big deal. I’m not just pulling things out here for the sake of argument. Saban should do something to discipline the guy. That’s what should happen. No more than a game, but a game nonetheless. And, it was a completely classless act.

by Sparkey on Sep 8, 2009 3:55 PM CDT reply actions

As far as the wildcat situation goes...

I think Kodi should practice throwing out of the wildcat 65% of the time while running the other 35%. Too ‘immerse’ in throwing situations and get him used to making the throws. Just my 2 cents.

War Eagle

by WarEagle86 on Sep 8, 2009 4:35 PM CDT reply actions

I wonder...

where the logic is in running the Wildcat two plays in a row, like we did at least twice. Yea, you got to throw it some. Let him fake a run then drop back for a short pass anywhere

by War Eagle Atlanta on Sep 8, 2009 4:52 PM CDT up reply actions

There’s a reason Kodi isn’t playing quarterback. He can’t throw with reliable accuracy.

I agree, the wildcat requires some threat of passing. But Kodi will turn the ball over just as likely as make a completion. That is not wise.

Fannin might be able to pass.

If we leave Todd in, then that is the pass threat.

by KungFuPanda9 on Sep 8, 2009 8:11 PM CDT up reply actions

Durst had too much practice last year

He’ll be fine this year, if we need him. And I think we held back A LOT of the wildcat. Malzahn is too smart to show us everything we have for the opener against La. Tech. It’ll be interesting. And now that we have Eric Smith apparently he’ll add even more than we expect. Things are going to be great

by auburn tigers on Sep 8, 2009 4:40 PM CDT reply actions

Shut your face

How can you sit there and judge Virginia tech. I guess it is easy to do from the outside looking in. Grow some nuts and play UCLA. I personally think Virginia Tech had a rather decent. team. As far as Miami, they belong nowhere near the top 25. Did you actually watch the game between them and FSU. Neither team fielded a defense worth a sh1t. Please tell me all you saw was the final score to that game, then i might not think you’re such a dumba$$. I also think you are trying to down grade Alabama’s win by bashing VT. You only think the preseason polls are bad because your team is nowhere to be found. Lets face it, Auburn has and will always be the little bastard child in this state. I could sit here and argue with you idiots all night about your fans being jealous of the tide. The outcome would be me losing because of the lack of experience in being a complete tool. You Sons of Bi**hes need a new hobby. The jealousy is just oozing out of this site. I guarantee you that if one of you cow humpers went to rollbamaroll.com, none of you would see the first word about your pathetic little college. Which once again proves my point, Auburn is only relevant to Auburn. Fags

I’m sorry Zach had an opinion you didn’t care for, but then again YOU are on an AUBURN blog. We don’t exactly spend our days extolling the virtues of the Liberal Liars Den of Tuscaloosa. Seriously. then completely ignoring the rest of his post…made the mistake of reading a full one…once. This is an AU page, and he is not an AU fan…therefore, he is irelevant. Dont get worked up over his drivel.
