Gene Chizik leads 'em out!

2010 Outback Bowl open thread!

War Eagle, everybody! And Happy New Year! This morning, we'll kick it off with the very FIRST football game of the new year! The Auburn Tigers take on the Northwestern Wildcats, in what might be an offensive shootout! It's time to fire up the coffee pot, knock back some orange juice, and shake off those New Year's Eve cobwebs!

Checking the Tampa weather, it's currently 65 degrees and cloudy, here just shy of 9:00 AM Eastern time. Forecast calls for a 90% of about a half inch of rain. It should be windy with a few thunderstorms. The temp will fall all day, ending in the 50s. Sounds like a soggy day.

As always, feel free to chime in and sound off! We'll be here all morning, watching with great interest! War Eagle!

Good Morning Acid..

The weather could be a factor for NU, but hopefully, Auburn will not be bothered with it. They did play in the rain for the first half of the season, and went 5-0.

My fingers are crossed.

What are your thoughts about Cam Newton signing with our Tigers.

Unbelievable!

…..This kid has decent mechanics throwing, and he’s a LOAD running the ball. If he keeps his head on straight, he starts, and is probably a huge star. I hate it for Neil Caudle, but Newton has to play.

…..Caudle’s not a bad backup, if we can keep him. I can see him transferring somewhere, maybe UNA, if he doesn’t win the starting job. Terry Bowden is looking for a QB for the Lions, this year. He signed 22 former D-I players this past season, and took ’em to the playoffs.

Not bad

i dont like messing with uniforms, but i guess this is considered a throwback type of deal. Very Sexy.

by Ahmizzle on Jan 1, 2010 9:23 AM CST up reply actions

I'm not so sure...

I don’t like messing with uniforms, shoes etc. during the season. But maybe just maybe, these shoes are better than the other ones from Under Armour.

Fitzgerald was shown.. ON espn

as one of the Overacheiving coaches this year by Desmon Howard.
Once again the media leaves Auburn off the list, because of their love affair with Tubberville.

what

AU didn’t overachieve. this was a below than average season for us. Gene didn’t overachieve but Im liking him with all these big name guys coming to our program. i would want tubbs back if A) there wasnt so much trouble in our old coaching staff, and B) Chizik wasnt recruiting so well.

by Ahmizzle on Jan 1, 2010 9:21 AM CST up reply actions

Coach Chiz brought a fractured team and fan base back from the dead.

If that is not overachieving then I don’t know what is. Also his staff is a recruiting machine. Hats off to Gene Chizick.

Predictably,

…..the Gameday folks are scratching their heads on why Auburn is the favorite, with a 3-5 conference record.

by Acid Reign on Jan 1, 2010 9:17 AM CST reply actions

That Tebow in the NFL

…..piece was interesting. They harp on his throwing motion, but I don’t think that’s necessarily going to stop Tebow. The same thing was said of Steve Young when he came out of college, and look how that turned out! Dan Marino threw off his back foot frequently. Bernie Kosar made an NFL career out of throwing side-arm. If I’m an NFL general manager, I grab Tebow in the first round if he’s still available.

Good morning and War Eagle!

I too was shocked that the Gameday folks were having a hard time believing that the Tigers were favored. Not knocking the Wildcats, because it will be a tough game. But I think that the Tigers can kick ass and take names!

I think that's a bit of an exaggeration by the ESPN guys, honestly

I’ve been writing about Northwestern and Wisconsin all season… When Kafka is on, he can have insane numbers, but during the season he’s been prone to turnovers at very bad times. Usually, though, he fumbles after getting hit during a run.

I’d say Darryl Clark is the best in the Big 10, and Kirk Cousins and Scott Tolzien have been more consistent than Kafka. When Joey Elliot and Ricky Stanzi are on, they are also pretty good.

Apparently

he’s playing unusually bad. Said, what?, 7 picks all season?

by Bren Dekura on Jan 1, 2010 11:40 AM CST reply actions

I'd like....

by Acid Reign on Jan 1, 2010 1:43 PM CST reply actions

Here goes the game.

…..Demos to kick, and it IS….. iced. Auburn calls timeout.

by Acid Reign on Jan 1, 2010 1:43 PM CST reply actions

And here we go again.

…..Demos in. The snap, the spot, it is NO GOOD! Wide right!

by Acid Reign on Jan 1, 2010 1:44 PM CST reply actions

wow….two corners down …….that is not good

by weglweglwde on Jan 1, 2010 1:45 PM CST reply actions

The toss....

……and Northwestern wins the toss. They’ll defend first.

by Acid Reign on Jan 1, 2010 1:48 PM CST reply actions

I’m still mad about the facemask call on Fairley. He didn’t make the tackle with the mask, his hand just glanced off it.

by weglweglwde on Jan 1, 2010 1:48 PM CST reply actions

Once the QB's head turned...

It was a no brainer for the ref

by KoolBell777 on Jan 1, 2010 1:49 PM CST up reply actions

Agreed

That’s an automatic call. They got rid of the 5-yarder. It’s either a facemask or isn’t and he clearly grabbed it (if only for a split second).

by DoubleB on Jan 1, 2010 1:51 PM CST up reply actions

Auburn on O

…..First play, and it’s a fake and the corner route to Zachary is overthrown.

by Acid Reign on Jan 1, 2010 1:49 PM CST reply actions

2nd and 10

…..And Auburn’s behind the sticks. The wrap around, and Tate is to the 10!

by Acid Reign on Jan 1, 2010 1:50 PM CST reply actions

1st and goal

at the 10! Tate, BASHES to the 5.

by Acid Reign on Jan 1, 2010 1:50 PM CST reply actions

2nd and goal.

…..Burns in. Burns will take, and keep. He’ll slip down at the 4.

by Acid Reign on Jan 1, 2010 1:51 PM CST reply actions

that was a stupid play call

by weglweglwde on Jan 1, 2010 1:51 PM CST up reply actions

Key play.

…..Todd takes, fires, tipped away, trying to hit Trott.

by Acid Reign on Jan 1, 2010 1:51 PM CST reply actions

Oh, the FG unit?

…..That’s a losing move.

by Acid Reign on Jan 1, 2010 1:51 PM CST reply actions

Agreed,

would have liked to see 4 runs there.

by DoubleB on Jan 1, 2010 1:52 PM CST up reply actions

Byrum...

…..will give Auburn the lead, at 38-35.

by Acid Reign on Jan 1, 2010 1:52 PM CST reply actions

We just lost, we can’t stop them.

by weglweglwde on Jan 1, 2010 1:52 PM CST reply actions

And now we get to sweat...

…..another NU possession. Eeeeeks.

by Acid Reign on Jan 1, 2010 1:52 PM CST reply actions

Kafka lines 'em up.

…..Takes the snap, a throwback, and Markshausen runs though tackles for 4.

by Acid Reign on Jan 1, 2010 1:53 PM CST reply actions

2nd and 6

…..Kafka will fire to Markshausen, fumbled, Kafka gets it back, and now we have flags.

by Acid Reign on Jan 1, 2010 1:54 PM CST reply actions

How did we not get that fumble…….

by weglweglwde on Jan 1, 2010 1:54 PM CST reply actions

I think...

…..it’s going to an incomplete pass. No clue about the flags.

by Acid Reign on Jan 1, 2010 1:54 PM CST reply actions

Whoever knocked the ball away made a dumbass move, fall on it and the game is over.

by weglweglwde on Jan 1, 2010 1:55 PM CST reply actions

they think we batted the ball

after it was fumbled.

The call...

…..Illegal bat by Josh Bynes. That will give NU a first down.

by Acid Reign on Jan 1, 2010 1:55 PM CST reply actions

what the hell kind of call is that by the refs?

by weglweglwde on Jan 1, 2010 1:56 PM CST reply actions

I think...

….they have to call that a catch.

by Acid Reign on Jan 1, 2010 1:56 PM CST reply actions

He did bat the ball

But was it really a catch? If it was, was he down before the loose ball?

by KoolBell777 on Jan 1, 2010 1:57 PM CST reply actions

……down prior to the fumble, no foul. 3rd and 1

by Acid Reign on Jan 1, 2010 1:57 PM CST reply actions

the correct call

by KoolBell777 on Jan 1, 2010 1:58 PM CST up reply actions

by weglweglwde on Jan 1, 2010 1:58 PM CST reply actions

1st down at the AU 15.

…..Empty backfield. Kafka will be sacked, fumble! AUBURN HAS IT!

by Acid Reign on Jan 1, 2010 1:59 PM CST reply actions

That's game,

depending on the call. I think he was trying to ground it.

by Acid Reign on Jan 1, 2010 1:59 PM CST reply actions

He looks down. Its a sack though, they lost big yards.

by weglweglwde on Jan 1, 2010 2:00 PM CST reply actions

He's down,

and has possession. Game’s not over, and it’s a sack.

2nd and 25

at the 30. Kafka will take, and fire over the head of Stewart.

3rd and 25

…..Kafka will check, and fire to Markshausen to the 18.

4th and 13

and they’ll bring Demos in.

And we give up the yardage to make the FG easier…..plz block

And a flag.

……We roughed the kicker. NOOOOO

by Acid Reign on Jan 1, 2010 2:03 PM CST reply actions

FIrst down Wildcats,

to the nine. Demos is hurt. He got rolled up pretty badly.

Mistake after mistake.

……We’ve had a half dozen chances to end the game.

by Acid Reign on Jan 1, 2010 2:04 PM CST reply actions

Kafka back in.

…..Shotgun. Kafka takes, and fires on the out to Markshausen at the 5

by Acid Reign on Jan 1, 2010 2:05 PM CST reply actions

The kicker hopped forward twice..

I really beleive that was a bad call.
I hate it for Demos though

…..Kafka has one back. Takes, and dives to the 5 after no one was open.

4th down,

…..NU sends in the backup kicker Flaherty.

by Acid Reign on Jan 1, 2010 2:07 PM CST reply actions

Carter forced it wide,

Wow. We were

LUCKY. Great effort by Northwestern.

by Acid Reign on Jan 1, 2010 2:08 PM CST reply actions

I'd argue lucky and unlucky

Tate doesn’t fumble it never gets to this point.

by DoubleB on Jan 1, 2010 2:09 PM CST up reply actions

Both teams were lucky and unlucky

Both probably feel they should have won by 14 points

Great dodge...

….by Chizik. They totally missed him with the gatorade!

by Acid Reign on Jan 1, 2010 2:09 PM CST reply actions

There were a few weird calls,

but this was a way better job on the officiating than we are used to in the SEC.

No problem

I had a good time. What a game….

by Hilary Lee on Jan 1, 2010 2:23 PM CST up reply actions

Nothing at the end was a poor call in my book

You don’t grab the facemask and you don’t touch the kicker. The kicker thing is coaching as much as anything.

by DoubleB on Jan 1, 2010 2:11 PM CST reply actions

HE ROLLED INTO THE KICKER……he went down…..and the kicker came into him. That is a 5 yarder at the most.

by weglweglwde on Jan 1, 2010 2:11 PM CST up reply actions

He rolled right into the kicker and didn't have to

He takes a better angle he never comes close to him.

by DoubleB on Jan 1, 2010 2:12 PM CST up reply actions

when you hit the ground after running full speed….you are gonna continue to move. He went down to keep from hitting him…..bad call.

by weglweglwde on Jan 1, 2010 2:14 PM CST up reply actions

I agree

But it should have been running into the kicker, not roughing. The contact was similar to a play earlier in the game (I think first half) where our punter was run into, and nothing was called. Should have been two 5-yarders.

You know what they call a quarter pounder with cheese in France?

by jd is legend on Jan 1, 2010 3:56 PM CST up reply actions

Congrats

Helluva game, weird game, but good win Auburn. Congrats.

by RotoJeff on Jan 1, 2010 2:11 PM CST reply actions

I still dont get what Bynes did…..I never saw him touch the ball.

by weglweglwde on Jan 1, 2010 2:11 PM CST reply actions

They called it on 17, but it was

actually Thorpe. He deliberately swatted the ball away from Markshausen after the apparent fumble.

by Acid Reign on Jan 1, 2010 2:13 PM CST up reply actions

Wasn't Bynes

Was Thorpe. got numbers mixed up. He swiped the ball away from the WR so he couldn’t recover it and apparently thats illegal

by Bren Dekura on Jan 1, 2010 2:13 PM CST up reply actions

why the hell is that illegal? Do you just let him pick it up? And that is nothing compared to what the KNOW happens on the bottom of the pile after a fumble. Do you think that they are flailing like crazy in there?

Two hard-fighting,

young teams. It was a coin flip there in overtime. Mistakes made on both sides, and a happy ending for the Tigers. I’m drained!

The craziest

wildest, poorest officated, amazing game ive seen.

Upon moving to AL, I let my wife decide who she would root for. After one day at a new job full of Bama fans, she met me at the door with a hearty cry of "WAR EAGLE"

by SandMountainTiger on Jan 1, 2010 2:12 PM CST reply actions

So many...

…..close calls, though. I’ll give ’em the benefit of the doubt.

by Acid Reign on Jan 1, 2010 2:14 PM CST up reply actions

The SEC NEEDED

…..this win. UT took it on the chin last night, and LSU is mucking around in Orlando. Penn State is brutalizing them. The SEC could be 2-3 heading into the Sugar Bowl tonight.

I figure Bama will win the title game, but I have no confidence in Arkansas. They are 2-7 in bowl games since joining the SEC. Ye Olde Ball Coach is 1-2 at South Carolina, too.

by Acid Reign on Jan 1, 2010 2:17 PM CST reply actions

I’m glad we won, but am both angry at and amazed that we continue to choke on leads with incredibly bonehead plays.

It's been a great day...

……and a hearty thanks for everyone who contributed on this thread. Now, I’ve got to go clean up fireworks debris from last night out of the yard. I’ll try to have grades up before the night is through. War Eagle, everybody, and kudos to Northwestern. Amazing game!

could care less about the SEC needing this win... who cares.

this was for AUBURN. this was about winning because… AU deserved W #8, we were more balanced than NU, made less mistakes… some unluck, and then we got a few breaks in the end… but damn, this game had its shifts and wild bounces… war damn eagle. a great pace to the game all morning that made for a VERY entertaining and a heart racing contest. i haven’t drank so rigorously so early in a long time. a great W…great competition and effort from both sides. this was all about AUBURN and a great W for the orange and blue. what great momentum heading into 2010…
